Mtd bml question? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wanting to know if I flashed the cm7 rom on my epic and made a nandroid backup of clean gb....can I restore back to it even though its bml or would I have to odin back to stock....

You can restore it, but you would still be on mtd. So it'd be like a cleangb mtd kinda thing

No! You cannot restore a BML nandroid on MTD without a LOT of editing of the nandroid. You have to change all the rfs or ext4 in filenames to yaffs2 then you have to edit the nandroid.md5 file itself and replace all rfs or ext4 with yaffs2 then you can only advance restore system then advance restore data then also cache.

Here is a more detailed thread of how to do that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420584
If you try to restore a BML nandroid on MTD without doing all those steps you will go into a boot loop requiring Odin to get you back to BML.

*ugothakd hides* yeah he's right, I didn't realize how difficult it was

What you CAN do is flash the MTD CleanGB version and either use Titanium to restore apps and data from that nandroid or just rename the data file in the nandroid and nandroid.md5 and advance restore data. Then when that fires up make a fresh backup of that and you will have a working nandroid for switching back and forth.

Cwm

Can we not go from ext4 to rfs nandroids in cwm? It doesn't usually seem to work for me.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
It works ok. But it doesn't change it.I'd you backup on ext4, switch to rfs, and restore that backup, you'll still be on rfs
sent from my cm7-ified epic
If it gives you trouble for some reason do an advanced restore data only.

So why doesn't it change the file system? Isn't that the whole point of a recovery is that it will make your phone identical to when you made that nandroid?

No. It is a backup of files and data, not the filesystem. Look at it like making a computer backup, formatting the hard drive as FAT32 instead of NTFS. The restore does not put your system back to NTFS.

You could dd it via adb if you really wanted to

You are probably on EXT4 now and trying to restore an RFS kernel. You can either flash a kernel like Samurai or Shadowkernel or run ext4toRFS.zip to return to that system. Other option is to Odin to EC05, root and then restore.

Going from CM9 to EL30

Can I go back to my back up of EL30 from CM9? The reason I ask is because CM9 is mtd and my rooted EL30 is bml. I have a back up using CWM5.

Nope... the only way to get back to bml is to odin back to it with the victory pit and repartition checked... somebody didn't study up on the subject before jumping in!!.

Lol. Thanks.. I didn't jump in yet. I was reading but must have missed the odin thing. I have not odin since froyo. I was hoping can just do a restore.

Just flash an MTD EL30 ROM and advanced restore data from your nand backup.

The EL30 ROMs have the hotspot too. If you are going to convert your backup here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420584
Is it worth it in your opinion. I will do research on the benifits but if someone wants to tell me the differences

So I need to conver bml to mtd then update to cm9. If I want to go back then all have to do is restore my back up. Thanks

Yeah, if you follow the procedure you will have your BML ROM converted to MTD, back it up as soon as you successfully boot to MTD, then you can try CM9 and restore your MTD converted ROM when you are ready.

ok thank for all your help guys
i still trying how make it work. i will share if i found the problem
CyanogenMod ROMs are in ext4 filesystem.
Stock ROMs are in rfs filesystem.
When you install CyanogenMod, your phone's internal partitions get formatted to ext4.
Problem is that CWM can format internal partitions to ext4 but not to rfs, so you cant boot your restored backup because of stock kernel failing to mount ext4 filesystem.
You can try custom kernels that are designed for stock and run in ext4 like Phiexz's kernel.
hmm, ic so other word i cannot restoring my stock rom right, because cwm not design to backup stock rom.
so this function backup and restore just for custom rom or stock rom that design for ext4.
hmm....
thank you for your information it very useful for me

Can you go from CM10(.1) to TW ROM?

I want to go back to TW, not stock though.
My laptop is broken so I can't Odin or flash anything. So I was wondering is it even possible to go back to TW by flashing or am I stuck with CM10?

YES WE CAN! Any MTD TW ROM will do.

I would go back to TPR but I'm scared. They say you should Odin to stock then flash TW but I can't Odin. I can flash though!
Are you sure?

I think they say odin to stock because (if I remember correctly) the /system /data and /cache partitions are different sizes on CM than the TW MTD ROMs. I would PM kennyglass and ask him if the partition sizes on TPR and CM are the same.

Cm10 actually has a larger system and smaller data partition. So if you are wiping data and installing clean TPR will work in that partition. If you are restoring a nandroid of TPR full of apps it probably will error out. YMMV. Worse case is either you could restore your CM10 nandroid or Odin stock and install TPR.

I wiped cache and factory reset and flashed TPR. It worked
