Can we not go from ext4 to rfs nandroids in cwm? It doesn't usually seem to work for me.

It works ok. But it doesn't change it.I'd you backup on ext4, switch to rfs, and restore that backup, you'll still be on rfs

If it gives you trouble for some reason do an advanced restore data only.

So why doesn't it change the file system? Isn't that the whole point of a recovery is that it will make your phone identical to when you made that nandroid?

No. It is a backup of files and data, not the filesystem. Look at it like making a computer backup, formatting the hard drive as FAT32 instead of NTFS. The restore does not put your system back to NTFS.

You could dd it via adb if you really wanted to

running kings gingerbread android 2.3.3 with cm7 kernel base. Curious about an app that's in my app tray says yo search for wimax keys? Then it says that no keys were found? Any idea what this means?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
If the RSA Keys app says your RSA Keys are missing, it means your 4g (wimax) is borked. Do you have a backup of your Wimax?
I do have a backup of wimaxx...should I do a restore through clockworks ROM manager? Or do you know a better way?

The only way to restore your wimax backup is through the recovery that you used to make that backup. Ra cant restore clockwork and vise versa.

That would be wise to try and restore your wimax keys! As of now they seem to be gone which means no 4G for you right atm. I hope you have your nandroids!

I'm still a noob at alot of this stuff...so bear with me. I don't think I did a nandroid backup when I first flashed my first ROM which was kings titanium. I have done backups though since then through clockwork...

Try your earliest backup...if any of them will work, it'll be that one.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
What you can do is take the wimax.img from one of your backup folders, then make a new folder named anything (no spaces) and paste it in there. Then just restore that and it should only restore your WiMax partition.
you can also put the wimax.img in the root of your SD card
and using adb:
adb remount
adb shell
flash_image wimax /sdcard/wimax.img
I was wanting to know if I flashed the cm7 rom on my epic and made a nandroid backup of clean gb....can I restore back to it even though its bml or would I have to odin back to stock....

You can restore it, but you would still be on mtd. So it'd be like a cleangb mtd kinda thing
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
No! You cannot restore a BML nandroid on MTD without a LOT of editing of the nandroid. You have to change all the rfs or ext4 in filenames to yaffs2 then you have to edit the nandroid.md5 file itself and replace all rfs or ext4 with yaffs2 then you can only advance restore system then advance restore data then also cache.

Here is a more detailed thread of how to do that:

If you try to restore a BML nandroid on MTD without doing all those steps you will go into a boot loop requiring Odin to get you back to BML.
*ugothakd hides* yeah he's right, I didn't realize how difficult it was

What you CAN do is flash the MTD CleanGB version and either use Titanium to restore apps and data from that nandroid or just rename the data file in the nandroid and nandroid.md5 and advance restore data. Then when that fires up make a fresh backup of that and you will have a working nandroid for switching back and forth.

Can u change the names on the backups I do with cwm without messing up my backups
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
No I haven't tried
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Yes you can change them. There cannot be any spaces or un-supported characters like "/", "*", etc...
You can use underscores or camelCaseNomenclature to help make it flow / read easier for multiple words or numbers.
I have had trouble with this and always got md5 errors. Use ROM Manager to rename them as they are made. It works great.

When I install rom manager and run cwm it ask for my phone Samsung epic 4g or Samsung epic 4g (mtd) which one do I choose and does rom manager work for this phone being I bricked a phone before messing with rom manager

if you are on a mtd rom choose mtd. if your on a bml rom choose the first option

You choose Samsung Epic not MTD unless you have done the conversion or on a MTD ROM. If not on MTD then Install Clockworkmod at the top of the menus of ROM Manager. It installs the officially supported CWM on your phone which is uses regardless of the recovery that is on your phone. You should also find and flash CWM 5.027 zip so your phone's recovery matches for 3 finger salute. And yes it works fine now that the Epic is supported.
If you are on MTD ROM just hit menu key in ROM Manager and pick manual recovery or something like that and then choose Epic-MTD and clockwork 3.xxx.
Can I go back to my back up of EL30 from CM9? The reason I ask is because CM9 is mtd and my rooted EL30 is bml. I have a back up using CWM5.

The EL30 ROMs have the hotspot too. If you are going to convert your backup here is the thread:

Is it worth it in your opinion. I will do research on the benifits but if someone wants to tell me the differences

Yeah, if you follow the procedure you will have your BML ROM converted to MTD, back it up as soon as you successfully boot to MTD, then you can try CM9 and restore your MTD converted ROM when you are ready.
Alright so I'm on JB, rooted, Kt kernel and I wanted to factory reset my phone to see if battery life will improve because I've heard it works for some.
My question is, is it better to backup through Kies, reset, and restore from kies backup or will I risk bringing back theb (maybe) source of problems by doing it that way?
Or suck it up and restore from a TWRP or CWM backup. The only reason I prefer the Kies backup is because I hardly have enough memory left on my SD card to hold a Nandroid backup.
Thoughts?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I always hate dealing with kies but i get the issue of memory. That's why i like extra sd card space makes it easier for backups. I prefer cwm but its Ur call

Will the CWM backup include all the pics, texts, etc.?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Do a nandroid on external SD that's where I do mine. Also use titanium you can back it up to dropbox , box or Google.
Sent from my Samsung-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Nandroid on external sd. As far as the pictures go. I have mine default save to the sd. I normally do not format the external sd during restores, backups or rom swaps. So the pictures always remain.
However, one time I left the the sd card installed when I was returning to stock via oden. It wiped both internal and external. So now when oden is involved I pull the external. Just to be sure.

So now to my understanding in TWRP the option to create image.zip is just creating a backup that I can flash right through Odin like a rom as opposed to the option to create a backup?
What can I do with that option to create a backup? Is that also an odin flashable zip?

Usually Odin doesn't flash zips but it creates a flash able zip through cwm
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Yea I meant CWM. Thats the recovery I had installed that allowed me to create the image.zip
So basically that just creates the exact state that my phone is in and allows me to flash it via cwm to get right back to that state.
