[Q] Low available memory after flashing evolved rom final - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed the final evolved rom to my evo "r3 charged final"
I have noticed that with all the roms I flashed since 2.3 came out that i have very little free memory the previous rom I had about 130 megs but now I'm running 80 -100 and that is with a task killer set on 1 min kill intervals.
I read about low ram and something called HSPL but i have no idea what it is or how I can flash it
can any one help
also on the rom install i wiped the phone and even formatted the sd card so i know the install was clean ( it also runs really good until the memory gets below 70megs )
thanks for your help

Had the same problem, you need to partition your SD card and install apps 2 SD., I use one called dta2sd( dark tremors Apps2sd. Before using I used to get low memory messages all the time...
Give it a try it helped me out..

is this for you to move your apps to or is this to use like ram it appears that my phone is running low on ram for the running processes but not room for storage ( I moved almost all my apps to the sd card already )
thanks for your quick reply above

Think its for more memory space for apps, but it must create more system memory as well, because before I used it I had moved all my apps to SD, but I was still running low on memory. Since Ive used apps2sd ive had no more memory shortages
Hope you like that Rom I've used it my self and its a good one.

I just partitioned my card but it did not affect my free available memory but i now have tons of storage space on my phone.
thank you for the advice though i really like having all the apps on a partition freeing up space in the phone any way ( i use alot of apps )

sounds like you don't quite understand the difference between ROM/storage space and RAM/memory.
A lot of people use memory and storage interchangeably but that is not accurate.
The OP is having a problem with low memory/RAM meaning that the OS and running programs are utilizing too much RAM, IE too many apps or processes are running or there is a memory hole/leak somewhere. He is not having a problem with storage space or room to install additional applications or store additional data.

you can use the V6 supercharger or Car-o-dope tweaks (i think thats what it is called) they will increase your RAM
If you get the RC4 release of the V6 (its still stable but not on the main page) you should do option 7 and 20. Be sure to nandroid before.

Thanks...don't some ROM's use less memory? I'm running an AOSP ROM and it seems quicker than the Sense ROMs.

Aosp is faster then sense ALWAYS. And some roms do use more memory then others

Thanks for the heads up on the RC4 release of the V6 I put it in and it did help my memory on this rom . So after partitioning and running the script I just have one strange question.
Does this rom have a built in power battery saver? i am not running any sort of battery saver, I am running a task killer still but only to see free ram since the script does the task killing now. I notice my wifi shuts off when the phone sleeps and that I have sleep mode that enables at about 11pm. Is there a way to kill this since I do most of my computer geek stuff late at night.
I have looked all through my apps and i have nothing installed that i believe could be doing the power conservation stuff
thanks

stop running services reappearing?

anyone know why i have only 109mb free, with everything killed in task manager, is this normal? i am using leedroid rom
i found some services running that i have ended in running services which has helped a bit. but they keep appearing like google maps
Android handle itself the ram memory..if you think to handle the running application better than the google engineering, you are wrong
When the memory is going to be full, and 190 mb free are enough, it will free some memory when and if it is necessary

If you have a ginderbread rom, u will always have less memory then in othe froyo roms..
Check if there are any background apps...
Sometimes when my phone starts randomly eating the memory I just unmount the SD card then remount it then it goes back up. Or u could just restart the phone

any extra things I can do to optimize my phone?

Hello,
To keep it short. I am looking for any other cool things to do with my phone (rooted/S-offed) to increase performance or just cool things to F around There must be tons of possibilities with a rooted/S-offed phone
So far I have done a few:
Custom ROM recent CM7 nightly #208
Juwe's RAM optimization script
Custom theme
SD card ext3 partition for all my apps, so I have plenty of internal memory left
adfree app to block app ads
camera "less picture compression" script
I know I could try different ROM's but I am quite pleased with CM7 so I think I'll just stay with this one for now
Cheers
Could try some stickers lol. Only joking, have you looked into custom mtd? Very good for extra internal memory.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Just a quick and probably silly question about MTD partitioning. (I know the answer for a PC, but not for a smartphone.)
If I resized my MTD and free up internal memory, would this increase the benefits from the JUWES or V6 Ram optimisation or is it just for more storage space for apps?
Its just app storage. RAM (Which Juwe's Script and V6 Supercharger Script optimize) and ROM (Which Custom MTD alters) are different.
Try R3ds themes for cm7... u can get from android market itself.
Most amazing themes ever!!

OpenGL would optimise app/games performance!

[Q] Enabeling swap in custom kernels

Hi everyone,
What about adding swap support to custom kernels to overcome SGW ram shortage? Couldn't post to dev forum so posted here. Please someone reply.
I have my SGW now for about one month and its my first android device.
I havevsome years ofvexperience with Linux and while i was playing around with my phone i have experienced som lag while switching homescreens on Go Launcher.
I have quite some stuff on screens and ex taskmanager widget shows me
that my mem is easily filled when doing some more stuff.
My phone got root and terminal also set up so thought
i go make a swap file on internal sd to give phone possibility
to swap mempages out of ram when needing mor mem.
Been there done that, saw that even if swap helper progs (i.e. mkswap, swapon,
swapoff) exist gives error that kernel lacks swap support.
Dont know why swap not implemented in stock rom, went ask internet for
custom kernel for SGW. Reading Kezras custom rom thread and beeing unable to post
questions to him on his thread , got me here.
I ve also read on internet that there are custom kernel for other devices with
swap activated. Though our fon has quite good processor it lacks ram,
so i wonder if custom kernels here have swap activated and perhaps start discussion here about pros and cons.
Thanx for any replies.
Hi its me again,
searched and found this thread for Htc that points out it could make sense to add swap to phons with little ram but strong cpu .
Check it out here.

But, is our Wonder short of RAM, or short enough to require swap partition on slooooow SD, or comcache using precious processing cycles to compress/decompress ??
Would using memory management, such as zeppelinrox V6 TurboCharger, not be more appropriate?
V6 Main thread
Latest Beta's
Without having to further reduce RAM for comcache!!
or swap partition on SD which is much slower than RAM?
But, I agree, it would be interesting and useful to have Custom ROM, which supported swap or comcache, even for the ability to compare and contrast.
But, there will always be a trade-off when using either comcache or swap....it's just a question of whether the individual user finds it acceptable.
Hi there irishpancake! Just testing the V6 supercharger myself seems pretty ruthless...keeping my used RAM at 230MB almost permanently and lag free! Doesn't quite have the same effect with a custom launcher but TW is flying. I think ur right about our device needing memory management more than anything.

@irishpancake
I ve tried the script you suggested,
and it 'feels' very promising.
I appreciate also your speakout for activating swap support in custom kernels/roms so anyone could choose freely what way to go.
Still virtual ram don't interferes with good memory managment and
with swapspace you have a little extra even if you dont use it and the
slow access is relativated through paging. Wonder if one can set page granularity in kernelconfig ?
By the way if anyone could point a
Rom/kernel developer at this thread as i cant. I would like to hear their opinion on all that.
Thanx for replies so far ....

Hi 2g11 man.....
sorry, I just saw your PM, about V6, and just to say, I find it definitely snappier, and as you have noted, very good on the memory management.
I do not have enuff knowledge to actually give figures or stats, but it just feels much faster, and responsive, lag-free.
I am still using the Update 9 RC4, so I will try out the latest version Update 9 RC6 ASAP....
I use Launcher Pro, just coz I hate TW, and it is remarkably good with the V6 tweaks........and I am still Stock ROM 2.3.6 [KJ6].
Here is a nice article about linux and swapping.

As i read here
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/...ot-login/437078-changing-pagesize-kernel.html
changing pagesize is no valid option to influence swapping behaviour. We have to stick to
"swappiness" kernel parameter which can be changed 'online' though.

@irishpancake I guess I didn't properly set the ADW Pro I was testing as the 'default' launcher as described by THE-E in another thread. Will try out the new script as well. Just wondering, do you use options 7,13 and 20 as described in Rio's Black Keys thread? Maybe some other options you've tried?

I think the parent of 'super charger' is juwee ram script.i have used this script in past and it gives amazing performance.

>Don't use compcache!

>allow purging of assets

Mods like crossbreeder also can make CM7 little fast.
you can share your SD card space with RAM, with Swapper, search XDA for more details.
V6 supercharger is also known as great script for increasing ram usage efficiency.
hope this info helps. you'll find more information if you read around XDA.
Ty for the info just 2 more things how to get crossbreeder and how to use swapper please tell me what's good for swapper ty again for making my wildfire run smooth and the battery is fabulous keep up the good work

I've made a thread about crossbreeder in the themes and apps section, check that out.
Get the crossbreeder Zip files and flash it in CWM recovery. That's it.
Now about swapper,
Android system usually caches apps that it thinks the user would use. That results in faster app opening times and better multitasking, because the apps are already loaded into the RAM.
But when the RAM gets low system clears out cached apps to make space for foreground apps, this is where swapper comes in.
Swapper uses a partition on sdcard (if you have a swap partition),or a file in the sdcard to act as an extended RAM. (sort of )
So, now when the RAM gets low swapper moves some cached data to the sdcard, and frees up space.
So instead of totally killing an cached app, the app still stay cached in the swap file, until its open. Then the data is moved back to RAM.
By the way, swapping will DECREASE the life of your sdcard.
Swapping is not necessary, unless you're into heavy multitasking
Tip - if you have terminal emulator installed, type free and enter, to see the RAM usage

Ok will download and I got the swapper which makes my phone lag free ty soo much

[Q] How much RAM do you have for apps?

I'm asking because I'm frequently out of RAM, causing extreme lags and launcher reboots. I know the CPU reserves 300MB, leaving 700MB, but how much do ROMs typically occupy? Any recommendation for leaner ROMs? Or perhaps there are modifications to enable more aggressive task killing (non-background tasks)?

First of all, that mod puts it in /system, /data and/or /cache. So it doesn't even try to use the sd card regardless.
Second, I just thought i would try it out and it throws out an error "incompatible with your device Galaxy Nexus (toro).
I figured maybe i would give swapper 2 a go again. It hasn't been updated in ages, but it seems to work. You can leave it on sdcard (which is just internal memory anyway) or change the directory to any you want. I changed mine to /cache since my sdcard is kind of full. Can even change the swapiness within the app. Only downside is the limit for it is 256mb. So far it seems to be working properly on Verizon Galaxy Nexus stock, rooted, 4.1.1 with lean kernel.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I have done some tinkering. What seems to work for me is limiting background processes to 4 or less. These turn out to be cached processes which keep opened apps open. They eat up your remaining RAM and should ideally be removed if an app you're trying to run demands it. However, the removal process causes significant lag, possibly due to the slow internal memory the GNex has.
I'm running CM10 (4.1.2), and I have 245MB free right now. It has gone down to as low as 150MB, but rarely below. When using 4.2.2 based roms, I get as low as 40-50MB, which causes problems. I don't have high hopes for 4.3 right now.
