Hi Guys,
DOes anyone experience the problem of the desire killing off active/background apps even though there still is 100MB of RAM left??
I'm on Leedriod 1.5 and i have autokiller installed with just "optimum" settings active. I also have process manager installed without the auto kill service activated.
Regardless of what I do and how many apps I open, my free RAM can never drop below 100MB. The phone just starts killing off the background processes at that point.
Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening?

How can you blame the OS when you have an active task killer installed???
AND it isn't even a stock Desire but a rooted one, running who knows what settings.
My car drives badly after I changed the engine and put two handbrakes on... LMAO!

Autokiller is only set to kill apps when free range reaches 50mb. However, the os seems to be doing it much earlier at 100mb.
That is the reason I'm asking. Just wanted to know if by default the desire 's settings are configured that way

First of all, try removing all your task killers/process managers for a time and see what stock Android process management is doing. In addition, if you have spare parts installed, check that you haven't set process management to aggressive. Just because you've told your task killers not to start killing until there is less than 50mb free, doesn't mean that this is what they are actually doing!
IMHO, all auto task killers are a waste of time - having everything killed at 50mb free memory is just a waste of 50mb of memory, but that is beside the point!

I have started to notice the performance of my htc Desire degrading.
Apps take longer to load. Where before it was almost instant, now I have to look at plain black or white screens while the apps load.
Not sure what could be causing the problem. Anyway i can find out whats the causel?
Its a stock unrooted 2.1 desire.
Only things i have loaded recently is HTC IME keyboard mod and "what the doodle". all other apps were running for a long time.
Stock Unrooted 2.1? Just install 2.2, it's much faster.
I have found that the amount of available memory/RAM decreases the more you use the device. Not sure if its due to a memory leak somewhere, apps getting greedy with RAM, or what. I find that when it gets to a point thats too low for my taste, or performance starts to degrade, a simple restart works to clear up the issue. This happens even with a task manager, so I am not sure what the cause of the memory degradation is.
Mine did the same whilst on 2.1
Does a re-boot not speed things back up? If not it could be a dodgy app hogging memory.
When this happened to me, I fixed it by backing up using mybackup pro (worth every penny) and doing a factory reset. Takes only half an hour, and gets your desire back to box fresh speedy. Just be mindful of which apps you put back on.
I also take it your stock desire is branded? When your carrier releases 2.2 to you, you'll see a vast improvement too.

I noticed this on my Desire (2.2 custom ROM) just now, and it seems to be a memory thing as according to "Android System Information" the CPU usage is low (under 10%) while the RAM usage is high (only 7% free). Is there any way to prevent the RAM going so low and performance degrading as a result? Will a task killer help for this? (I've read not to use them as Android's meant to take care of tasks but if it's not doing a good enough job of clearing up old tasks then surely it would be better to use one?)
Es task manager works well for me when my ram is getting low. Nice not having to reboot. Im on froyo 2.2

Stock Desire on 2.1 used to slow down once it got to about 40mb free. Now running 2.2 and its always above 100mb. Runs fast all the time now but I keep my task manager from the 1.5 days as its handy to know what is running and using up the RAM

What do you do in ES Task Manager to free up your RAM? I tried "Kill All" but it didn't seem to have much effect (still stays at around 40 MB free). Had to restart in the end to get the performance back up to scratch (now has over 140 MB free).

Same issue here and i suspect that default browser is the cause.
When free RAM goes very low, generally after one or two days from the startup in my case, i use free app OSManager to see all running processes. This app shows several instances of default browser process (called Internet), each one eating 40-50 Mb of RAM and in sleep state (not zombie). System never removes them and manual killing doesn't work, so there stay in memory over time. I tried different task managers, but only OSManager shows this detail.
To confirm this hypothesis, now i start to use Dolphin instead of default browser: in a couple of days, i will know if the issue is still present.

Well, this isn't the cause for me as I have always run Dolphin Browser HD on the Desire. I don't use the default browser. I think it's mainly system processes that just stack up in the background. I found that going through and trimming the list of system processes did free up the memory, but it's just as fast to restart the device.
I flashed the final evolved rom to my evo "r3 charged final"
I have noticed that with all the roms I flashed since 2.3 came out that i have very little free memory the previous rom I had about 130 megs but now I'm running 80 -100 and that is with a task killer set on 1 min kill intervals.
I read about low ram and something called HSPL but i have no idea what it is or how I can flash it
can any one help
also on the rom install i wiped the phone and even formatted the sd card so i know the install was clean ( it also runs really good until the memory gets below 70megs )

Had the same problem, you need to partition your SD card and install apps 2 SD., I use one called dta2sd( dark tremors Apps2sd. Before using I used to get low memory messages all the time...

is this for you to move your apps to or is this to use like ram it appears that my phone is running low on ram for the running processes but not room for storage ( I moved almost all my apps to the sd card already )

Think its for more memory space for apps, but it must create more system memory as well, because before I used it I had moved all my apps to SD, but I was still running low on memory. Since Ive used apps2sd ive had no more memory shortages

I just partitioned my card but it did not affect my free available memory but i now have tons of storage space on my phone.
thank you for the advice though i really like having all the apps on a partition freeing up space in the phone any way ( i use alot of apps )

sounds like you don't quite understand the difference between ROM/storage space and RAM/memory.
A lot of people use memory and storage interchangeably but that is not accurate.
The OP is having a problem with low memory/RAM meaning that the OS and running programs are utilizing too much RAM, IE too many apps or processes are running or there is a memory hole/leak somewhere. He is not having a problem with storage space or room to install additional applications or store additional data.
you can use the V6 supercharger or Car-o-dope tweaks (i think thats what it is called) they will increase your RAM
If you get the RC4 release of the V6 (its still stable but not on the main page) you should do option 7 and 20. Be sure to nandroid before.

Aosp is faster then sense ALWAYS. And some roms do use more memory then others

Thanks for the heads up on the RC4 release of the V6 I put it in and it did help my memory on this rom . So after partitioning and running the script I just have one strange question.
Does this rom have a built in power battery saver? i am not running any sort of battery saver, I am running a task killer still but only to see free ram since the script does the task killing now. I notice my wifi shuts off when the phone sleeps and that I have sleep mode that enables at about 11pm. Is there a way to kill this since I do most of my computer geek stuff late at night.
I have looked all through my apps and i have nothing installed that i believe could be doing the power conservation stuff

Free RAM is not the issue, it's whether your phone has breathing space.
For instance, I can have 50mb free but everything runs fast because the RAM is used up by apps that I use.
However, if your RAM is being used up by background services and apps that you don't use, then it will produce occasional slow down.
In other words, free RAM is not the goal, but properly utilised RAM.
All this being said, I hope RAM management improves with ICS.
When you restart your phone, check the RAM after it fully starts up (without opening any apps). Mine is 150 used, 150 free.

I'm running stock, rotted, so some system apps removed.
Mine has around 140MB of free ram.Try to reduce unnecessary widgets from the homescreen.
If rooted use titanium backup and move internal apps to system.
Use the integrate into ROM function. System apps have there own partition.
This might help with lag issue.

Just install Gemini task killer and app manager ..also download fast reboot from the store
I usually get about 200 meg free ram when i reboot and about 175 free ram after 24 hours ..
I am rooted and using aniking rom ...

OK if your phone is rooted then use an app from the market which is called titanium backup.
Once installed press menu button select batch option look for option to make a backup of all 'system apps and user apps'
once the backup its complete. Look for option in batch setting 'integrate into ROM'
This will move some internal apps into the system partition of the phone, this will free up your visible internal free memory.
I have moved maps, gmail, adobe flash into rom and they run with out any issue and still update
Hope fully this will help if you are having any lag issue.

I have 100 to 150 mb free. I use icelite beta1, but i have installed ram manager free from market becouse my ram was always under 60 mb and i have experienced some lags. But now all works fine. Hope it helps
When it starts it has around 200MB of RAM, with moderate use (Browser, YouTube, maybe a game, Twitter..) around 140MB, never goes below 100.
I have Arc S, currently unrooted (bricked it once, waiting on ICS)
and I think RAM managment will be better in Ice Cream

Just curious where y'all are picking these numbers from? And just how many are confusing "RAM" with "storage"?
And, don't forget, "free" (as in unused) RAM is wasted RAM. In a perfect system, you would have 0 MB of free RAM, as every bit of RAM that wasn't currently in use by an app would be used to cache data to prevent the uber-slow reads from disk.

0 ram in a perfect system? There must always be some free ram, because new opened apps need it. But je can use swap memory. I use it to, and it's boost my system. But use a good sd card when u want to use swap memory. I have a class 10 sd card, so I don't have any problems whit my swap memory. I installed a2sd and use the app a2sdGui tot set the swapines. Swapines is how much the system use the swap memory.
Swap memory is the same as virtual memory in windows. But when you only have a class 4 sd card, I don't advice you to use swap memory. And whit a2sd you also can put system apps to your sd, on a sd-ext partition. Search on XDA and you find something about it.

No, you don't need free RAM for this. RAM currently being used for Cache, marked as Inactive, or used for Buffers will either be discarded or flushed to disk, and then that newly freed RAM will be used for the new app.
In Linux (which is what's under/behind Android), there are 5 categories of memory usage:
- Active (RAM currently in use by the app)
- Inactive (RAM used by apps that aren't currently running but were recently so could be used again quickly if you run the same app again)
- Cached (RAM used by the OS to cache disk reads/writes; can be flushed to disk at any time for use by apps)
- Buffer (RAM used by the OS to buffer various things; can be discarded at any time for use by apps)
- Free (completely unused RAM just sitting there doing nothing)
In a perfect system, Free would be 0. Any available RAM would be used by apps (Active) or the OS (Cached/Buffer). And anytime an app needs RAM, it would grab it from the Cached/Buffer groups.
But je can use swap memory. I use it to, and it's boost my system. But use a good sd card when u want to use swap memory. I have a class 10 sd card, so I don't have any problems whit my swap memory.

Swap use is an indication that the system has too little (not enough) RAM for the number of apps you want to use and is really just a crutch. The less swap you use, the better the system will run.

And, again, how are you measuring "free" RAM? I'm willing to bet that what most people are measuring is not actually "Free" RAM, but what the Settings --> Applications --> Running applet shows as "free", which is really a total of Cached, Buffer, and Free (IOW, it's showing "RAM available for use by apps" and not "Free, as in wasted, RAM". Those are two very different things.)
Install a real stats/monitoring tool like Diagnosis and configure it to show "free" ("Real free memory", not "Total free memory"; the former is Free, the latter is Free+Cached+Buffers) memory, and you'll notice that it will hover around/under 5 MB most of the time. When you first power on, "Free" will be 40-80 MB. Fire up a few apps, and it will drop down to almost 0 MB. And it will hover there until you reboot the phone.
Which is exactly what it's supposed to do!

I've noticed on my e975 EU version even with 0-1 apps open the ram free is only 1gb... Other phones have far more ram available including my previous nexus 4. Anyone else notice this? I often find with quite a few apps open I only have 2-300mb free
I've never seen less than 500mb free but its true. Never more than 1gb.
I checked earlier with 0 apps running it was at almost 1gb used.. what on earth is using almost 1gb!? If phones with only 1gb can use less than that on jelly bean.. why does this phone use so much?
According to ram usage i am using approx 400mb, task manager says im using 800mb. Maybe 400mb is reserved for system? This is on stock rom with only a few apps installed.
Keep in mind free ram is wasted ram. Free ram is like having a fast car and only using first gear. Still curious to know where it all ram is used nontheless.

I get what your saying with 'Free ram is wasted ram' but when you run out of ram.... things will start to stutter.
Having a few apps open to find you only have like 300mb left is insane.
I've had phones with only 1gb ram before and with lots of apps open they are using like 700mb/1000mb... it's almost like this phone is going 'Oh I have 2gb available so i'm just going to chomp up 1gb for the sake of it and leave you with 1gb left....'
If you're root use an app called "Greenify". Simply hibernate the apps that don't use adding to the list of the app, then add the widget to hibernate the app that you added (all except whatsapp, twitter in my case). In addition I use a tasker manager (don't added to greenify) and add a widget too, that combination gave me 1,2 gb free using a lot of widgets
Im stock un-rooted.
I only have 2 widgets on my home screens, 1 is the standard world clock and the other is play music. Tried removing both and it barely made a dent...

That's weird, only 900 mb free?? Mmmm, try using advanced task manager from the play store (I don't remember if root is needed), that will free you more memory. But in the 900 doesn't mean that the phone will be heavier, backward the used ram is exploited to make the Optimus lighter

I also have 600 - 700 MB of RAM when I do not use anything.
There are just icons on my homepage, and a calendar widget (stock one).
At this case, It gives me 600-700 MB of free RAM. I always use "clear RAM" button. But why it gives us so limited free ram?
I used to use 4X HD with 1GB of RAM. There were 350-400 MB free which almost same with this optimus g?
Can someone explain this situation?

As said above, phones with only 1gb available use about 3-500mb... Our phone with 2gb available seems to use about 900mb-1gb with nothing running. It's like it's gone 'Oh there's twice as much free so I'll just use twice as much...'
What about the AOSP custom Roms ...is the ram usage is same on that kind of Roms too?

My nexus 4 was far better at ram usage than my optimus g mind you. No matter what it never used more than 1.2gb
I think the Lg UI(stock firmware) is a memory hungry ...i suggest to try AOSP roms with lg skin :thumbup:

Using cm10.1 and have always about 1.4gb free, and this is more than enough for everything.
Y, stock rom have a crazy high ram usage, now im on PA and got 1.2gb free.
My doubt would be if, on stock rom, you get many slowdowns when you experience this high RAM usage. For me (who doesn't still have a LGOG, but is seriously thinking of buying one), it's the thing that matters most - if the lack of free RAM results in worse usage.
Otherwise, most efforts could do more harm than good - a task killer that kills an app which will restart seconds later is wasting RAM and battery instead of saving them.
I'd give priority to greenifying unruly apps you need often and freezing apps you rarely/never need but won't/can't uninstall (with Titanium Backup, or any other app that can freeze system apps) - always making sure you're not freezing some system app that will bring your phone to its knees. With this well configured, I'd say a task killer would only bennefit those of you that rarely use your phone. Everyone who often takes it out of their pocket and updates Facebook/Twitter or plays games should let Android take care of itself, as it will keep in memory the apps you've been using the most - as it should.
Don't use task killer apps, they aren't good for Android. Maybe something like a LMK Manager but you need root to change lmk.

M$ Windows does the same thing - if you have 2GB it uses only the half, if you have 8GB is use nearly 3,5-4GB. I think it preloads a few things including the most common used apps in memory perhaps?
