Intriguing but too bad a lot of people will be disappointed by the 3g speeds from sprint (especially if they have actually "good" "4g" wimax coverage)
Keeping my friend waiting between this or just buying the int'l version and getting the tmobile prepaid 4g plans...
What are the 200 LTE sites they are referring to in the article? I mean, are certain cities or states definitely going to have LTE when the phone launches and if so, which?

Google's release of the Galaxy Nexus was a complete FAIL.
Is the CDMA version still not on the "support list" anymore? Or was that resolved?
Complete FAIL.
Do y'all think when LTE comes over to sprint that we can switch over from wimax to LTE?

More realistically if enough ppl complained maybe we can get sprint to give us a free upgrade to an LTE device
By the time LTE actually comes to your area, you'll probably be eligible for an upgrade anyway.
And why would you get a free upgrade? It's not like the WiMAX service is being shut down or anything.
There are theories, but nothing confirmed yet.

I called Sprint when the news that they were ending WiMax came out and they said that if I did not have 4G in my area they would allow me an earlier upgrade to an LTE phone with no penalties.
I had to push them for a while and escalate and bedazzle them with logic, but it worked.
But it was all for nothing since my phone will be put up for sale May 7th.

Precessors have nothing to do with it. The problem is with the antennas. We simply do not have the hardware for lte.
Nah, he is right about the Exynos. I forgot about it. We did hear it may be possible with a software reprogram. Still looking to confirm.

We as in ACS. We were in touch with a reliable source that I'd prefer not to name the origin of.
A few things...
LTE and WIMAX do require 2 different radios so if you wanted your device to switch between them it would have to have both radios built in.
Wimax is not going away anytime soon because we announced a new hotspot device which houses all of our radios aka "quadband".
Just a question; Why is complaining ever a solution? Technology moves like water. You jump in knowing that there is newer and better just up stream of you. Retail some how gives people a sence of entitlment which baffles me. You buy a car, do you complain the next year and say "well now there is a 2013 modle with x,y,z in it so I should get it for free".... just silly, baby town frolics even.

I kinda agree with what you're saying... I think what people are having an issue with is that they are stuck in contract with a non-lte phone. If you had to pay 5 times for that newer model car than what a new customer would pay, I bet you would be pretty upset too. I just hope my upgrade timing plays out perfectly to when lte is coming to chicago. That would be awesome.
On that meeting they had about network vision they did say about making lte work under Wimax or something like that I may be wrong thoe

I know that this complete network overhaul is going to be one of the fastest ever but being as far behind as they are [and will be] it seems like this should be done with the Network Vision roll out, not after.

They still have about 6 million people on the frequency and they are cutting 33% of the towers. They also have to get approval from the FCC go use that spectrum for lte. It all can't be an instantaneous process.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The problem is that they won't have had time to completely clear the spectrum of Nextel users until late 2013 at the earliest. They've already started the refarming process in some areas so they can start launching 1x-Advanced carriers for improved voice coverage. Voice is still a priority for Sprint, and they can only clear enough spectrum for one or two 1.25 mhz CDMA carriers (vs a 3 or 5 mhz LTE carrier that doesn't do voice) for the time being.
I respect and fully understand the problem but this is a pretty serious situation.
Sprint is already far behind the big two...and actually they're behind T-Mobile and Metropcs too.
How much longer can they afford to delay?

Yeah was a bit mad when I saw this. If data speeds don't pick up for me by the time my contract comes up for renewal I'm going to Verizon. 2014 is too far away to deal with dial up speeds and closest Wimax tower about 50 miles away.

The 1900 band is better than the 2.5 GHZ band, but it will still have building penetration issues.
I've read that site and I don't think this is a "do or die" situation, but I think getting ALL of this done ASAP is a priority.
Because, no matter what, they are behind.
I think people have misunderstood this piece of news. Sprint is still rolling out LTE this year. This is additional LTE to what they are rolling out this year. The addition of 800 mhz LTE is part of network vision, its one if the last pieces.

Correct, but the 800mhz band is what's really going to make the difference and really going to allow better competition with Verizon's 700mhz band.

Honestly, I wouldn't fret about it. Things are changing so frequently that there's no telling what the next announcement will bring. Sprint knows it's in trouble, I listen to our corporate managers walk around all day making fun of how slow Sprint is. I've been hearing some information churning around about HTC and Samsung both stepping in to lend a hand in the roll-out. Last week was the first time I saw our Motorola rep in a long time as well, and I had an hour long conversation with him about LTE. There are a good number of new phones from Motorola alone coming this year and early next year with full LTE and HD Voice support, along with a software update for the Photon that may activate its dormant LTE radio. (He hinted about this being the plan for them to have the FIRST LTE device on Sprint's market and catch the other manufacturers off guard.)

No no no.
LTE will be on as soon as this year in many places.
They will NOT activate the 800mhz band until 2014.
(The 800mhz band is the real game changer for Sprint)
And THAT is why I think this needs to be as rushed as possible.
I too am disappointed. Let me find an article that will explain how stupid Sprint is for wasting money and time. 800 is so much better for signal!!!!

No idea what frequency, probably 1900mhz, but he seemed to be rather positive it will work with Network Vision.
It'll make the people who already have a Photon extreeeeemely happy with Motorola earning their repeat busines, unlike HTC and their new phone every 5 months for a couple minor changes.
No, Network Vision will continue as planned supplying LTE at the 1900mhz frequency. In the future, they will begin adding a second channel (800mhz) to offload traffic and provide better inbuilding penetration.

Count chips. See if it adds up.
Also, I just realized they're using my area for the poster child of NV. Let's be hoping.
How many phones do you think I will go through equipped with 4LTE until I can actually use the 4LTE?
I am on my 4th 4G phone right now, still with no 4G.
Lol, until you're in an area that has 4G coverage?
Depends, check s4gru for your rollout schedule then check sprints network upgrade site and see if your schedule is up yet. S4gru has my area scheduled for phase 2 this year and sprint has my zip in the next 6month upgrade list. I've already had connection issues occasionally and when I've called sprint about it they've said they are upgrading the towers for network vision in my area and I should expect intermittent connection loss as they work on the towers, I've already seen a pretty decent jump in 3g speeds. I used to get 800kbps -1.2mbps regularly now peak I'm getting 1.2-2mbps and off peak 1.5-2.8mbps, and I never had 4g wimax here just decent 3g mostly because my house is in a sparsely populated area so my tower is well below load
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Well I am on 2 now almost for sure going to be 3-4 before Reno sees any 4G. and now with the switch to LTE it is going to be even longer.
I would expect Sprint to roll out LTE much quicker than Wimax. The problem with Wimax is it was beta and LTE is VHS. Sprint stopped rolling it out when they realized they would have to transition to LTE in order to be competitive.

Hello everyone, I hope to check this thread for updates (read: I'm so dumb I don't check for thread updates often *laughs*).
Anyway, as the title says, I never got 4G on my phone, even before rooting it! I obtained this phone, new, around the time Sprint (began) started adding a extra rate for all smartphones (read: all smartphones will be more expensive than "simple" phones on same plan).
I'm wondering how to get 4G on my phone that is running Cyanogenmod. I am well-versed in Linux, so if the adb shell or the bootloader is required to fix, I can follow the steps you provide. Or should I just accuse Sprint for giving me a defective phone those many, many years ago, even though I never got 4G in the first place? (since my phone is rooted atm, I doubt I could win a court case.)
I appreciate any help, even if you do not know how to fix this. (read: asking around or just reading this)

4G and wimax are the same thing if you didn't know.
And OP, if you are on an ICS Rom or a JB Rom, you will not have wimax. For all you know, you might not even have 4G service in range of where you live. I personally have never even connected to a 4G network.

Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
If you have had the phone for more than 6 months, which it sounds like you have, you should un-root it and take it to sprint. If that is you want 4g service. The unrooting process is generally about the same in difficulty as rooting the phone was, so if you figured that out you should be able to get it backto stock. The process is different depending on your HBoot version and how you rooted it in the first place. If you want to get your 4g fixed, post your HBoot version and root method and someone will point the way to unrooting the phone.
(to get the HBoot version, pull the battery, put it back in, hold vol down, and power on the phone. You should get into the bootloader and the HBoot version should be listed there.)
I assumed it was due to not having the 4G plan before that caused my phone to never get 4G with the plans change (read: Sprint changed plan details). I should of thought of turning it in sooner, but I was not 100% smart back then (nor will I ever be *laughs*)

I would bring it into a store and get it tested to see if it works after you unroot, my sprint store doesn't care about root but that might not bevl the case. Then if it really doesn't work I would ***** and tell them to look up your account to show you never used 4g and see if the will give you a comp on your account.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I never noticed any difference in speed the few times I was in California where there was 4g. I live in AZ and with sprint there is no 4g service but we still pay the fee :/
I doubt unrooting it will fully unroot it (I did edit some startup scripts since i've rooted which seemed to have no impact on my data connection (mostly for ext2 mount point on a directory "/mnt/sdcard/sd-ext" which I removed due to delayed sdcard mounting--now I use a script I manually run when I want to ... offtopic sorry >.> ), so idk if a full unroot is possible.
EDIT: *scrolls back on posts* I read that flashing someone else's radio (backed up from their device) can prevent both from using 4G at the same time. tbh, I don't know if I ever did (I hope not)
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using Tapatalk (ex-GetJar version)

Somehow I'm getting 4G atm... but it is in a place I tried before (many moons ago). Strange indeed.
What I just don't get is why it is now working. Did I really flash someone else's Radio? If so, was someone else with that "4G login credientals" always on when I tried before? If not, was Sprint lying to me on their online map for 3G/4G coverage?
EDIT: I want to leave this open to see if anyone has any idea as to why it was failing. Another strange finding is that it is a 1 of 3 bars 4G signal according to Cyanogenmod's standard indicator. ( +1 for tethering without having to pay over $100 USD total on Sprint)
Sent from my laptop without any glorious Pixel Shader or "real" Virtulization support.
I've never had wimax signal at my house. Or city.
We are listed as 4g service area for "clear" wimax broadband, but they also state that it is currently not being sold here. That tells me the switch hasn't been flipped on it yet.
There is no sprint wimax one city over but they flipped the switch on "clear" broadband wimax and it's FAST.... If I get signal (its very spotty) ... . 7.4mb down. 1.14mb up.
Edit:
I was searching the intarwebz and it looks like anything more than 2 miles from the tower is pushing it for signal.
I also have the understanding that the 10$ smartphone fee is not just for 4g, but more so the nature of the beast. We have always on, always connected/pinging data devices.
