[Q] Rooting, roms, kernals and radios.... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

All,
This being my first pure android phone, I'm trying to figure out if I root this phone, in the future firmware release ie Verizon/Google 4.03, if there is an updated radio or kernel, Do I have to manually install the kernel and radio separately?
I remember my first android phone the Mytouch 4g, after awhile I forgot what radio I installed becuase it was done manually etc....and at the end, it became a pain in the butt.
Just wondering if I stay with unrooting and wait till Google release with update for my radio and kernel be easier.

If you oem unlock the device, then install the basics for root access, su binary and perhaps the Superuser.apk, the device will still remain stock and should be able to receive OTA updates in the future.
If you modify, change or remove any of the stock apk files or framework files the file verification process part of future OTA updates will fail.
If you add applications, such as root, future OTA updates should not fail.
This analysis is all based on the assumption future OTAs operate the same as past OTAs. This could change at any time, although I'd speculate not too likely.
Not familar with your old device, but this device displays baseband version under the Settings-> About Phone menu.
Hope that helps!

Yes you have to manually install the radio and kernel separately.. but they will be provided as flashable zip files so it's not a problem at all if you have an extra five minutes..

new update? (1.47.651.1)

http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-software-update-now-available
This is my first update with my evo... and i was wondering how to go about it when i have a custom rom installed.
I have baked snack installed... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701685
What do i do? wait till the rom maker updates the custom rom?
thanks
It is always the best course of action to wait for a developer to update their custom ROM.
thanks for the quick answer
Yeah, the Dev's will integrate it into their ROM's or supply a patch that doesn't break root. Right now if you install OTA it'll break root.

alright, thank you very much.
It does break root for the Unrevoked method.
Unrevoked has said they will have a solution:

Oh, and for those of you who updated: we'll see if we can RUU you back down. Stay tuned.

We hope to release a patched OTA tonight for #evo4g that allows you to preserve your root and still get all the benefits of the OTA.

Looks like @HTC might have closed our root hole. You'd think think they'd have released the EVO GPL source first. #copyrightinfringment
What is the point of this update? Did sprint fix anything that would make it worth updating? The new radio might have some benefits but that can flashed separately and not effect my rom or root status.
it fixed the grounded screen issue and made the phone more peppy.

First link says, "Sprint and HTC this morning released the expected software update for the Evo 4G. Said to be improved in Version 1.47.651.1 are Wifi signal strength reporting, improvements to the Exchange ActiveSync security policies, and network improvements to address battery life."
It doesn't say anything about grounding issues. But they don't always report everything they fix. We'll just have to see if it gets fixed for everyone who updates.
I have a few questions
1. Is it best to wait for a ROM with the OTA built in? or do we flash a zip file not re-doing the ROM?
2. If we flash the zip instead of waiting for a ROM.....will these changes stay permanent? For example, if we flash a new ROM in the future, will it undo the OTA stuff?
Thank you

Question about OTA updates.

I have been helping my buddy root his phone and he needs to do all the ota updates. If he has .1 and goes straight to the new one, will he have to flash .6 first. I figured so.
From my understanding, you should NOT do any OTA after you root, or you are likely to lose your root.
Not the actual OTA updates from sprint, but the already rooted ones in the dev section.
Gotcha!!!
And an answer? I am always wondering about the radio's, if he just does the newest radio update first instead of the others.
the newest radio will be best, if you flash (for example) 0.1 then 0.2 up to whatever for arguments sake 0.6 all you'll be doing is rewriting the files. thats a waste of time.
grab the newest rom of whatever you want to flash for your friend, and the newest radio that the developer of that rom suggests.

Sprint Updates, do I want them? (rooted phone)

Hi all. I am a proud EVO user and generally love the phone. It's rooted for use w/ wifi tether. Not really using root much beyond that. Question, do I want or need the Sprint system update(s)? I had read that unrooting my phone could keep it from being rootable later on. Will the phone perform any better w/ the updates? Are there alternatives? My last phone was WM and it had a custom ROM. What do you all think?
Thanks!

Anything Sprint releases ends up on here rooted and ready for flashing (usually within hours). I would not do any ota updates knowing that.
Sent on the go from my HTC EVO
Thanks, that being said, should I flash to a custom ROM? I'm sure all this has been asked and answered, so appologies to that. Also, if i do that, should I back up my current apps (what should I use) and when i restore can i restore to a newly flashed phone or is part of the back up process the system files?
People do create rooted versions of the stock ROMs that Sprint releases. So, you can try custom ROMs, but you don't HAVE to. You can get the latest one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
Here's a thread where you can grab all of the latest Radio, WiMax, PRL, etc updates:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
No, installing and official OTA can cause you to lose root. Download the rooted version ^ or stall the latest update for your rom.

Rooted phone, do I still get Sprint OTA updates?

I am still on ICS 4.04
I rooted phone using GNex ToolKit 7.9 (thanks Mark, ToolKit is great for newbies) mainly to add widgets to Apex Launcher. Since I am still using stock ICS, can I still just sit back and wait for 4.1 JellyBeans to OTA from Sprint?
I am new to Android, about 3 months now. I am a little anxious about flashing a ROM at this point.
Yep, you should still be able to get OTAs IIRC. It's only if you've put on a new rom, kernel or recovery that your ability to get OTAs is stopped (not sure about radio but I would assume that it would stop OTAs too).

if you modify any system files, the OTA will be available, but you wont be able to install it.

android ver 4.1.1 after updating through odin

i followed the unroot galaxy s3 thread because i accidentally pressed update when OTA update popped up on my rooted phone.
downloaded the latest android zip and updated with ODIN.
but it doesnt show 4.2 it still shows 4.1.1 android.
im a bit confused.
theres just too much **** available and i lost track of all these build numbers and updates and different programs.
i dont spend much time here anymore after i got rid of the HD2 and now im completely lost.
got other stuff to do cant afford spending 3 hours a day to stay on top of latest repackaged rom release

4.1.1 UVDLJC is the latest official firmware.
oh ok then i thought it was 4.2 for some reason
one more question that i could not understand clearly
once i root the phone again. what specific services do i need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
i disabled one service related to update but didnt see any others.
and once rooted. do i have to unroot it in order to use odin and manually install OTA update that i downloaded?
im not planning to use custom roms( spent toomuch time making them wrk on HD2 and done with that for good)
jsut stock tmobile roms work fine for me.
thanks for quick reply i was about to try flashing again since i thought that it was supposed to be 4.2 version

You don't have to do anything with ota. When next one comes out you can unroot and install the ota as long as you hav stock recovery. If you have custom recivery you can always update with Samsung kies but you would need to reroot the new ROM. Or just flash a ROM through Odin.
