will setting this to evdo only work to lock the phone into 3g? i'm looking for a way to keep the phone on evdo rather than ehrpd as an experiment, since there's no 4g in my area...

It has to be there... It's under 'more' near the top of the settings menu, then mobile networks

It should be underneath your "Data usage" option where it says "More..." then just tell it you want CDMA only.
I love the LTE speeds but only use it when I really need speed AND have a charger handy.

This will still use ehrpd for 3g...I was wondering if there's a way to force it to evdo.

I work on the very edge of an area with 4G reception.
However, my phone seems overly aggressive in switching down to Edge, and will always do so if I let it.
When I go into Settings and manually force it to WCDMA only, then I can connect on 4G and it works and is faster.
It's a huge hassle having to manually go in there and change this setting all the time, is there a way to tweak the preferences of the phone so that it will be less likely to switch to EDGE but will still do so when there is absolutely no 4G signal?
Haven't checked on the SGS2, but I remember on my N1 you could set "WCDMA preferred." This would prefer 3G/4G first and then fall back to edge if no other option.
Not anymore unfortunately unless your running on 2.3.5. There used to be a dialer code "*#*#4636#*#*" which opened the "testing" settings which allowed you to set wcdma preferred.

Ouch, so that feature was cut, and now there is no way to do it at all anymore?

Hmm, I'm seeing band preferences in there, where I can adjust things about the frequency bands, but I'm not seeing how to adjust the preference between HSPA and EDGE, any ideas?
When in the "secret menu" (*#*#4636*#*#) there are a bunch of options. On the Verizon galaxy nexus what would you say is the best? I am using wcdma preferred right now.

I'm on GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)...
What is default?
I did not go in through testing, but downloaded a widget that if I click "4G" it takes me to "phone info" where i can select a "preferred Network Type". I am just curious what "default" is.
Thanks
@op, you should leave those options alone.
Default is the Auto PRL one.

If you want 4G, then cdma/lte (which is the default.) If you only want 3g, go cdma only

Is there a way to force LTE as the only network my phone connects to? I have the network app that worked in my EVO 4G LTE but it doesn't seem to work on my GS3
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
go to settings>more settings>mobile networks>click on network mode and select Lte/cdma
also in the mobile networks click automatic connections if urs is unchecked.!

Rooted Evo dead.
Rooted Evo shift dead.
Rooted Galaxy s3 alive and well!
I know that setting but is it a way to put the GS3 into LTE only mode and not just LTE/CDMA

My wife is with Verizon and theirs works the same way. She's always like, why won't it just stay in 4g? Different beast than WiMax (not that that wouldn't drop out like a trap door sometimes.)

Yes, you can do this in the hidden Data Programming menu launched from the stock TouchWiz dialer. You will need to know your MSL code:
In the Dialer enter ##DATA#
On the Data Programming screen select Edit
Enter your MSL
Tap OK
Select Others
Select HDR/1X Selection
Select "LTE Only Mode"
Tap OK
There is a major downside to this: You will no longer have voice or text service, only LTE data service (where available).

Hello was wondering if there is a way to force to edge network on the AT&T galaxy s3! I can accomplish this easily on my galaxy note n7000 but not on the gs3.
Thanks

That option is not available for AT&T based ROMs.
From the phone dialer enter: *#197328640#
Umts -> Debug Screen -> Phone Control -> Network Lock -> RAT_FREE_SUPPORITNG ON <- once you choose this option it will say "Now RAT Free Supporting" - this will allow you to change bands freely (no need to pull the SIM card).
From here you can freely swap to whichever band you prefer and it will connect without a reboot required!

He meant:
Dial: *#197328640#, then select the numbers from the menu in the order: 11864, or 11865, whichever has removing the RAT restriction as its last option.
Then from the dial pad:
Dial *#2263#
Select GSM Band Preference
Select GSM all
You don't need to reboot or remove the Sim card.

Like on the Nexus 4 there is a dialer code and are able to change to LTE only or wcdma only etc...
They only give us 3 options to us through connection settings.
Reason for this is in certain places I know where I get lte it only gives me H+ and it isn't as fast. And at those times I'm not calling so I don't care.
Can any one please help me?

*#2263# enter that in dialer. Might work.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
*#2263# enter that in dialer go to "[4] LTTE Band preference" then select lte band 4. hit the menu button and hit select. type the number 1.
also as you will not be able to make calls with this setting.
The better mode is LTE/WCMA (go figure).

I know thank you. When I'm at work lte is there on one bar and is faster than H+. and other places too.
Once I leave I switch back to normal.
The funny thing is that on my Nexus 4 it had better radio's sorta in a way as it almost always choose the fastest regardless if LTE was available.

Thank you for this information. Sorry if it's not obvious to me but is there a way to disable LTE using this menu? When I'm at work, it's constantly changing between LTE and HSPA+ as I walk about and it actually interrupts my data connection a bit. My HSPA+ speeds are more than acceptable to me.

In normal settings you go to more networks and choose mobile networks, then choose wcdma only.
