GPS Navigation - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is there a good working navigation program? I tried with navigon but it wouldn't start. Tried out IGO with 800x600 resolution but it will only use 1/3 of the screen?
Any good tips?

Have you tried Google Maps or Navigation?
Brian

Yes but I would like to have maps in phone, not downloading when you need it cause it's gonna be expensive when drive down in Europe.

Try Sygic 11.2.3
It's very nice and compatible with ICS.

Navigon has one that's good but expensive.

Thanks, will take a look at them.

You can precache areas in google maps so you can navigate the route even if you have your cellular turned off when driving.

Good !!!!!

I use CoPilot 8.2, it is pretty good, and not so expensive. I have it on my GN right now.

If you don't Google navigation then try Waze. Social navigation

Pre cache does work great but won't do navigation mode w/o an internet connection sadly. Still very useful as long as your not driving...
Peter let us know if you find one that works well on ICS please

Interesting... figured it was good for navigation. Thankfully, I switched to VZ, so my dead-zones are almost non-existent in America

I tried Igo (build 8.4.2.139242).
It works but it uses only 1/3 of the screen, so it was very small. It said it was 800x600 resolution and thought it would stretch out to fill the screen but it didn't.

Downloaded Route 66 Follow me from market place. You get 30 day's trail.
It works but the follow me function in which you use the camera wouldn't work.
Addresses are also incomplete for Sweden so will see if I find another one to try.

Copilot just updated their app and it now works perfectly.

wooo hooo
just got an update for ICS and it works great!!!!!!!!!!! :-D
How does copilot compare to a TomTom? I'm tempted to buy it as I don't have unlimited data anymore and don't see the point in using a tomtom when I have a phone with such a big screen.
Edit: I got it, looks great but force closes just after opening it quite often :/

I have discovered that if you activate forced 2d acceleration in "Developer Options" Copilot will work much more reliably.

I think that the google navigator is the best, even if it needs the offline navigation. In this case CoPilot is great and I used it, being satisfied

GPS Navigation question

Hello all,
Im using the GSM Galaxy nexus on T-mobile. I don't use data from T-mobile because i dont get good service in my town. I was wondering, Is there an app or something that will let me use turn by turn GPS on my phone. If not an turn by turn than at least a way to save the route and then use that to give turn by turn. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Copied this from a review..I've never used it, and it's expensive, but seems like it'd get the job done..
"Navigon for Android ($30 + $14 in-app purchase for live traffic) Navigon (by Garmin) is another great option, and while it's expensive and the app forces you to download your maps ahead of time (a process we suggest you do over Wi-Fi, as the files are pretty big) you do get the benefit of a "real" GPS app, where all of your maps are stored on your phone and you don't need a constant data connection to help you find your way. If your data connection drops—like mine did yesterday—Navigon keeps going like nothing happened. Plus, the app is snappy, the interface is well designed for in-car use, and the voice prompts are clear and loud. That said, it's really pricey by comparison, and you have to pay again in-app to get live traffic, when other apps offer it for free. Navigon has a long and storied history, and it's a great option if you need offline maps (although Google Nav also allows you to download map areas), but its really hard to get around the price."

Sygic.
Pressed from my Maguro
Just cache the map section of the area you are driving in google maps. This should get you going.

Thanks guys, I'll try them all. I heard you could do the google maps thing and I'm probably gonna do that but sometime when I'm on the road, I think I would need a navigation in case I got lost. Again thank you all.

Okay, and to cache the map from Google maps, I just have to put the direction in and click navigation? Will it automatically do it after that?

I do not believe that is the way it works. You save an area and then you can navigate within it offline.
I think I figured it out. I put an address in for directions and then I turned off my WiFi and the directions were still working. I'll try it on the road too.

you know that there's a whole "Settings" menu in current google maps application where you can manually cache various areas? lots of tutorials available via google.com...
Yea that's what I did to download a section of the map that I needed.

It has more features when it comes to driving directions but its design is not as awese as google maps i would say... Also, has real time reports of accidents from drivers and stuff like that

Using waze forever now, it's a really great app, never even bothered using google maps since I started using smartphones.
Maybe it's working better here in Israel but you should really give it a try, the more people use it the more accurate it is and after a while it also learns your schedule which is nice.
One more reason why i like waze over google maps is the fact that it only runs when i need it while google maps is always running in the background.

I don't think so. I have been using it for about a year and also on their beta list to run beta builds.
I do love Waze as well, but because of the roads are always being diverted and built up and expanded, I sometimes do not have time to adjust them. So I do revert back to Google Maps from time to time.
Going to new places still scare me using Waze lol, but I use it whenever I need to find my way home.

I think once you downloaded the map(by simply being in the area) it's saved on your phone until you delete it in some way.
Waze is user updated map, the more users you have the more accurate and faster updating it will be. Ideally it should update faster and better than google maps.
Here in Israel it's pretty damn accurate, in my old city we had a new traffic circle, my brother updated it and it showed up on the map after few days.

I know, but I had a bad experience with it once, but it was when I first started using it a year ago. While in a state where I was not familiar, Georgia I think, it was 2AM and needed to find my hotel. And I ended up spending 30 minutes going back and forth on the access roads to find the stupid hotel lol. So I reverted back to google maps and it gave me the image area where I needed to be and also called the hotel to make sure I was going the right way, which I placed from google maps, because I don't think Waze had that capability at the time. Maybe it did, but I reverted back to what I knew lol.
Waze is good when i like to know where is police or traffic jam. but if i like to know exacly addres, then i use google maps.
Sorry to ask but wht not Sygic? It doesn't use data and It's really good(for my needs).

Yup, Waze is awesome for getting traffic jams, crashs and etc.. But the battery drains a lot faster with Waze than G Maps
For me, i found that waze isnt very smart when redirecting. If i miss a turn, or take another better route from experience, waze will just keep trying to route me back to the original, even asking me to go backwards just to get back onto the original planned way. I no longer use it because of this. Google nav on the other hand seems to adapt much better and recalculates a better route depending on where i am.
Sygic is best I guess

Happened to me today. Tethered via bluetooth, Found plenty of satellites, found my location and started navigation....then...nothing. It just sat there like I wasnt moving. Backed out and went in again and it kept trying to resume from my original location and then sat again..

I tried to sideload Navigon and TomTom: Navigon works, TomTom starts up fine but the graphics in navigation is all garbled and impossible to use.
Is there any way to get a Navigon non-hacked .apk? I would like to use the app with the features I actually bought (like traffic warning etc) and I actually only use bought apps on my G3

I have to admit that I didn't think of that - and that I don't want my navigation to be in a dual-window
Sygic works fine but their route planning is suffering from the U-turn syndrome: If you deviate from the planned route it will not just recalculate a new route but will tell you to make a U-turn for a very long time.
I guess I have to use this alternative version of Navigon for now when I'm outside Denmark, when I'm in Denmark I always use Google Maps.
