First of all: don't worry. Everything you are used to is still here. Your username still exists, all the messages are still here, and we're all still here.
There are a few changes though:
You can set a country flag, as well as which device(s) you have and a home GSM-provider. These will be displayed in icon form with your messages. It's completely uncomplicated and much more fun if everyone participates. So please use the 'Profile' button in the menu above to set these things for you. They help others help you by knowing what device you have and what provider you are using.
Topics now have an extra property, which defines whether they are relevant for the original XDA, for the XDA II or for both. A small icon shows with each message. You can set this property when you start a new topic.
The separate XDAII board is gone. All messages there have been moved to the forum where they are most appropriate (see below). The fact that the messages were originally posted in XDAII now shows with an icon.
We now allow attachments, both in forum postings and in Private Messages, sized up to 50MB (!).
The boards have new names, and are slightly re-organized:

messages formerly in 'PocketPC' go here.
Not too technical, about use and peculiarities.

We currently use the plain-vanilla 'subSilver' phpBB style. Expect further changes to the way things look over the next few days. Please let me know by clicking 'PM' under this message if anything that used to work for you all of a sudden isn't working anymore.
Hope you like it...

We're still confused about all these Radio Stack Upgrade numbers. And if we are confused, imagine what that means for the poor folks out there. But I will include some more numbers tomorrow...
A couple of suggestions:
In the ROM Version setting of the profile, there should be a "kitchen" option for 4.00.16, since this is on at least one kitchen (perhaps "kitchen" ought to be a check box?)
I don't know that I would have chosen to have a merged 'update it' forum for XDAI and XDAII. Most readers are interested in info for one device and dont care about the other.

I was planning to create a one-click filter option for 'viewforum.php'.
Why damn, this blob-thing is ... growing.
As you may have seen the forum now has it's own hostname: forum.xda-developers.com. All existing links (/forum and /phpBB) will redirect to the correct thread or post on the new hostname (using a rewrite rule and sending HTTP 'Moved Permanently').
The uncompressed database for the forum is now 40 MB, the entire site is sending and receiving a few GigaBytes per day, to and from over 2500 unique IP-numbers each day.
Congradulation!
Hello
Well done and great work, keep it up.
thanks with best regards.

looks alrite but i miss the yellowy colour scheme now looks like every other forum on the web lol
how strange ...
the DB is only 40Mb ... this fits on 10% of my stamp size SD card ...
and yet, with just 2500 db-access (and how many posts? probably 100kb)
we get Giga bytes of traffic....
Just think how wasteful we're with current technology....
This goes double for a Pocket PC with two wireless communications,
100's of Mb of data, 400Mhz cpu ... and all that it does is displaying
who is calling your phone
Hmmm ....
[this is not a flame of the site or the PPC.... just a note on the status of the information/software age of the 21st century in general]

No worries: this is temporary. There will be some proper design-work done on the entire site.
This is a good opportunity to say "Thank you" to Mario Giambanco, whose ideas and kind offer to work on the site prompted me to do some cleanup first, which resulted in the changes you see. Between him, myself, and hopefully some other volunteers we can now start to do a major overhaul concerning the looks and stale content of the main site.
The new 'main site' is going to be database-generated (from the phpBB database), and will have at least 'News' and 'FAQ' pages, pointing to topics on the forum. This will mean the 'main site' will be much more of an up-to-date tribute to the collective work of all of you on the forum, instead of a somewhat stale collection of some cool stuff we did way back. Creating layout in the way we did it before is just too much work.
Welcome to our new face
It looks very nice

Hacking it ?
I written quite a few custom applications for the XDA and your site has some interesting infomation that has helped me.
I have replied a couple of times too with some code snipits.
All was very professional.
Now the Programmers Corner is under Hacking it, so I must of now become a Hacker. An interesting term, that I will have to add to my CV and see if it effects my future software appointments.
At last! Your decision to migrate to 2.0.6 is very welcome
If you interested - I can suggest two mobile adaptations for phpbb:
- read only version optimized for using as Mobile Favorites/Avantgo channels
and
- fully functional version for using from mobile devices.
These versions were developed and tested for one of the mostly visited (264,100 messages currently) PDA-related site in Russia http://www.handy.ru/board Unfortunately, all of the site is on Russian, but you may look though the following links just to smell it:
Mobile Favorites/AvantGo version:
Setup channels (Controls translation: forum name; timeframe; pictures (all/smiles only/none); link conversion mode; signatures on/off)
Ready-to-synchronize channel link (two days plus vacations, smiles only, links converted to text, without signatures).
Online mobile version: (banners should be visible from desktop PC only)
Forum index
Forum page
Topic discussion
All security is the same as in desktop phpbb version. Almost all functionality is implemented except site administration, advanced moderation panel (topic joining/splitting/mass deletes) and profile changing/private messaging.
These forum versions not include support for skins or language resources (sorry, but I develop them as fast as I can). So translation to English and slight adaptation to your mods (if any) needed. But I'm ready for this job.
The only main forum changes needed are:
- adding 4 lines to template variables array initialization;
- modifying 4 template files to add links to mobile versions;

It seemed like a logical term to combine 'Programmers corner' and the little used 'Other techie stuff'. We think of the term 'hacker' as meaning a benign and very advanced programmer or techie, and not in any negative media-sensationalist terms. (Even though some of us do smile when we take the SIMlock off.)
Ofcourse if you think the rest of the world would see this differently, you're welcome to say 'Programmers corner' in future job applications.
I sincerely hope this linguistic issue will not keep you from continuing to benefit and contribute in the future.
I have been looking for a nice today screen weather app for some time. I don't use the TF3D interface and did not like the built in app anyway. It had that really pesky problem of limited city selections. Anyway this is not intended to be a full comparison but just some comments I hope you will find useful in selecting a solid today weather app.
Tools I looked at:
-HTC TF3D app
-MSN Weather app
-Elocent Weather: http://www.elecont.com/weather-for-pocket-pc.aspx
-Weather to go: http://tonaya.com/products/wtg/index.php
-PocketWeather: http://www.sbsh.net/products/windows_mobile_pocket_pc/pocketweather
Indirectly looked at:
-Fizz Weather
-SPB Weather
Through this nice "shoot out": http://www.mytodayscreen.com/shootout-weather-applications/ (also included PocketWeather)
MSN Weather: Way too simple only the basics, not a today screen app.
Elocent: Looks like a solid contender, nice time history graphs, full featured, $10.
Weather To Go: Nice basic today screen, FREE, not maintained. Had some issues with memorization of the default city.
PocketWeather: Pricier at $15 but nice free eval period. Is both a nice light today app and provides more details than most will ever need. The winner for me.
PocketWeather provides current conditions, forecast, descriptive icons, customizeable icons, customizeable today details, sunrise/sunset, wind, humidity, direct METAR reports from nearby airfields, radar pictures, world daylight map, earthquake data and auto updates, strong control over data sources and download frequencies. UV index would be a nice feature that is missing.
In short an amazing little app. Do note I have no affiliation, stake nor conflict of interest with any of the products nor companies mentioned here.
I hope you found this useful in selecting a weather app. Feel free to add reviews, links or comparisons, whatever.
Have you tried WeatherPanel. I think its the best one out there and its free.
^ Looks very solid. I think you have the price wrong. Perhaps you can download for free or perhaps payment is optional but the site ( http://www.marsware.net/WeatherPanel/purchase.htm ) says $13. Moon phase info by any chance - it did not look like it. Lastly it does not appear to be maintained (not since 2005). Thanks.
Edit, update. I DL-ed this but no matter how I choose the two uddate options I can not even get a single data update to populate the today page. Bummer.
Ive been trying to find a good weather app as well. I also have TF3D disabled.. Ive been looking for something that will add in to my zune-ish today screen and has nifty animations. I've been checking out this one which allows to find location by GPS. Not free but has a really nice layout and functionality. Might go with this one..
edit: have new user restrictions and cant post a link. Google GWeather Ageye
I use WeatherBug (free):
http://weather.weatherbug.com/mobile/weatherbug-windows-mobile.html
and SPB's weather plugins.

You need to use something like cyrket.com or androidlib to view all the apps on a PC.
Ha, I was wondering the same thing as the OP- will have to bookmark the links.
Just on a side note: what's the general procedure of downloading/installing apps from a PC (or for that matter on the device)?

If you download a application to your PC, you'll have to transfer it to your phone. Either by copying it to your SD card, or by other means. You then have to install it via a file manager like Linda, ASTRO or similar.
If you use the Android Market on your phone, you just find a program, select install and voila.
Thanks for that.
Need to have the device in my hand to really find out things about it and more importantly to me, how it's done differently than on a WinMo device!
Hi,

Hi,
I was just wondering are any of the game apps as good as the Iphone. There are many good games but what I have seen so far on android some games look taccy and kind of old.
I have not searched a lot of games. But what are the best games?
I am struggling with this too.
I've become so used to the quality of design, look and function of iPhone apps and their appstore. I am keen to move to the HTC Desire shortly, but am finding it nigh on impossible to even find the spps I will require. I spend ages searching and still come oup with stuff which looks like it was written for a PC 20 years ago. And the recommended sites to browse the apps on are so ugly and full of dross, but more importantly, are unable to present the applications in a way which gives me any confidence that I will be able to satisfy my requirements using this platform.
I thought it must just be me as I am new to it (although I had none of these problems when I moved to iPhone) so asked for pointers. but I am still at a loss as to where the good, well-designed, modern, slick apps are.
I believe the Desire will give me a great comms experience out of the box, but no-one has been able to convince me that the apps I may desire to customise the device to me requirements are actually available.
Please dont think I am having a go; I am not. I am dead keen to move to this platform, but my research is not delivering results so far.
So I ask again, where is the good stuff?

The Good stuff is in the market. To find the good stuff you need to search in the market on your phone or via cyrket.com
If you give a list of apps I'll more than hapily find ones that are as good as or better than iPhone equivalents.
I've been trying Cyrket.com but it doesnt seem to work properly for me. All I did was filter for navigation tools and it came up with a blank.
As for a list of required apps,
- Exchange Tasks (with push sync)
- Compass
- London Tube map/planner
- Tide Planner for sailing
- Office apps - Word, Spreadsheet, Powerpoint editing
- Decent dictionary/thesaurus - such as Chambers
- and some quality games with good graphics
That'll do for starters
Android really got it's start as a device platform for the more tech savvy.
Most of the first year's worth of apps were written by developers venturing into the Android app environment. As such - most were pretty rudimentary and more focused on performance (learning how to make an app work well in the Android environment) than aesthetics. Also, there were many more apps made for productivity, communication, etc and very few made for Gaming (as Gaming development is normally a LOT more involved). Finally, the G1 which for a LONG time was the only device available was so memory constricted that many custom home screen apps had difficulty running - MUCH LESS any graphically oriented game. It was a learning experience.
AND, one cannot say (as I have read many claim) that Android is just Linux on a phone so what is the big deal development wise.... I have read this forum a LOT and Android IS NOT just Linux on a phone. There are a lot of differences and a lot more restrictions with Android.
Believe it or not... The Android app scene is constantly improving. Better looking games and more polished apps are constantly coming out.
Please don't try to compare the Android apps available to the Iphone which has had over three years to improve and started out with a better device in the first place.
I really dislike the Iphone and feel it's GUI is not intuitive at all (for me). So, I never really used one at length. But, I have seen some really great games on the Iphone. However, I can definitely say - I ENVY the Iphone devs a great starter phone for development! I only wish that Google/Android had put out a really great device (not memory restricted) as a first device. It would have made it so much easier for the developers to learn and work on.
Try AppBrain.com to search for apps. That is the site I use now. They also have a companion app for the phone.
Thanks for that historical viewpoint.
The interesting thing is that I actually dont 'NEED' to add many 3rd party apps to the Desire spec in order to fill my requirements as the out-of-box experience is so good. I have over 130 apps on my iPhone, but I probably use 10 of them regularly - the rest are just a bit of fun.
At present I am just trying to assimilate what apps are available that I know I will need, and how good the quality is.
Are any of the better 3rd party apps emulating the style of the SENSE UI? That would be cool.

why still I have a WM
Thanks for the list of apps. Some good stuff in there!
Re the Exchange on Desire, the reason I included this in my request was that all my research indicates that the Exchange implementation does not include Tasks.
I could use Moxier Mail which includes task exchange sync, but that may compromise the integration with the rest of the Sense UI, so I am looking for a good Task app with exchange sync, perhaps using WebDav.
It would be great if Tasks was included in the Sense interface as standard, but so often Tasks are omitted. Baffles me why they leave it out - same on iPhone.
I couldn't find a thread where anyone has mentioned this so I thought I'd mention this app. It's ArcGIS from ESRI and it is in the Marketplace (FREE!). It might be getting overlooked because people think they need to know GIS to use it which is not the case. Within the program there are dozens of base maps to choose from including a world road map. It doesn't have turn by turn directions but it does allow you to center your location and have the map scroll under you while driving. The world map has fairly good detail. Give it a try, I think you'll be surprised at all the information you will have access to with the various base maps.
I don't have any affiliation with the developer except I am a user of their desktop software.
Interesting, will show this to my girlfriend. She uses the desktop software for school, might have interesting integration capabilities.
Just for anyone who reads this, there is now a Turn-By-Turn navigation app which uses this API.
The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959087
I loaded the A to B navigation yesterday and it's got to be one of the top 5 free apps out there.
One thing I like about the Arcmap app I originally posted about is the ability to have useful maps saved in the favorites folder and switch between them within the program. It can go from a road map to a weather map and back again with just a few button pushes.
that's really amazing
just curious if it would have an integration problem with a laptop?
I'm currently owning a MTCE device. I'm a software developer (.NET). I'm a design and UX fetishist.
I see many folks of you have posted different apps, skins, mods, a.s.o. to get the best out of the headunit that is possible.
One problem I have seen is, that if I want to have a full working headunit, I will have to read thousand of forum-posts, try hundreds of software and then get stuck by a few apps that design is not fitting together.
Why isn't it possible, to join the forces to make a fully working ROM with preinstalled software that looks as if it was designed and made by the manufacturer? One design (maybe skinnable), one UX, selectable apps. So a newbie (like me) will get a fully functional headunit (including the basics like radio, DAB, mediaplayer, navigation, ...) that looks like factory-made with installing only the ROM.
Modern cars already have a well working headunit that has a seamless UI and UX between the different functions. Why shouldn't this be possible on our headunits?
I would suggest, that all of you developers, skinners, modders, should join your forces and create an experience for our headunits that will outreach the currently built-in headunits of modern cars.
What's wrong with hal9k or malaysk mod? They are fully working and in my opinion are better than original head unit from my car. You can even use google assistant, so you can control everything by your voice.
Maybe my mods will suit your needs?

I exactly know what you are talking about.
Whether malaysk nor Hal9k are the greatest thing since sliced bread and do not fulfill what I and you @RolandE1204 are expecting.
A common UI with same buttons and same background, coordinated in function and visibility would be awsome.
...but..... and now we have the main issue:
All firmware are made of apps from different developers and are just bundled in the firmware. This leads automatically to different UI for each single app.
You won´t get a navigation app which fits any other UI. You won´t get a player app fitting the UI of your launcher. If you would want this, each single app needs to get developed or at least adapted to a UI.... None will do that and as far as I know there is no possibility to create a common UI which adapts 3rd party applications. Each app has it´s own one.
This is one of the benefits of an OEM unit. There you have to pay a lot more and it is not configurable at all, because it is completely closed.... but with a common interface...
That's right ... but does it have to be like that?
@rigattoni You're absolutely correct. But does it have to be this way? Here at xda-developers are all the guys (and girls) that do the best work like malaysk, hal and many others that do very great work.
With a little more work together, there could be a complete solution that would not also work but also look great.
I may think too simple but there has to be a design and UX guideline, that has to be created and every application that will be developed using this guideline, will fit nearly seamless into the bundle of all other apps.
Also I'm sure that there are also som people like me, owning a slightly older car that hasn't built in a headunit with such functions. I like my car (Peugeot 308CC) and would buy it again but I wanted to add functionality that hasn't been in (rear drive camera, good working navigation, ...).
Just to clarify: I'm not searching for a free solution and I understand that this means a lot of work that can mainly be done by enthusiasts, but I'm also willing to pay for a solution that works and looks like a charm. So I think that even if we are talking about different applications that work together seamless, I am sure that there are people like me, who are willing to pay money for this.
I'm currently living with a mediaplayer (poweramp [blue]) that has a different behaviour and look like the radio (stock [black/white]) and a navigation app (magic earth [orange]) that also doesn't fit in. Other applications (TPMS, Bluetooth-Calling, Car-Status) are also looking very different.
I know that there are persons doing great work in modifying roms and apps but they all have their different design-language. So why not using a centralized design and UX language and creating a bundle of software that makes every owner of an android headunit as proud as he can be?
Do we get these devs together to work on one version with a common UI?
I would love everything to look similar, but I would settle for great looking apps that look different. Like that guy who posted the youtube link - nice radio app, but would look for a different music app

Yes, confused, malysk and hal9k are already this way. Perhaps OP wants to define look and feel.
Perhaps too, OP might not understand that source code to the MTCD units has not been released and that to a large extent work is by reverse engineering?

Sure, how would you do that?
@marchnz: It was just a question. Nothing else to be interpreted into this question...
I'm aware
@marchnz: I'm aware that reverse engineering is hard work. I've already done this by myself (as I said, I'm a .NET developer).
I'm not into developing android software but I'm sure it is a lot of work too.
As long as I do have the commitment of some developers that they want to follow design guidelines, I'm able to create some. What I don't want to do is, to create guidelines that nobody is considering. Also I do not want to patronize someone. So if someone commits that he wants to use guidelines and has a definitive app in mind he wants to work on, we can work out guidelines.
Maybe first of all invite some developers:
@jamal2367
@Malaysk
@Hal9k_
@mike.b
@f1x
im sorry I didnt get your meaning
whats the plan?
i'm a developer I mean what are we going to do?
can you explain more clear?
What has to be done is to unify the UI and UX of all the major apps that are needed.
The best would even be to make them skinnable.
So there is a need to create a common UI for
- Radio
- Media-Player
- Bluetooth (Calling)
- Vehicle (Doors, Trunk, ...)
What I already can say is, that there will be a skinnable version of magic earth (navigation) in the near future.
Also it would be nice if during this process, some smaller issues of a software can be fixed. (ie. Radio looses the station-names on reboot and only shows frequencies)
Anyone who will contribute on this project, please leave a message or send me a PM.

Hey
If you are interested in a radio player that runs over the internet then have a look here!
GitHub: https://github.com/jamal2362/URL-Radio
Download: https://jamal2367.org/downloads/?dir=Apps/URL Radio
You could install it on your mobile phone and use the app in landscape format and see what it looks like on the MTCE.

I've never written about a radio that works over the internet.
