[Q] Screen problems

My screen randomly freezes, with Android still running in the background. It also has multicolored "snow" static-like crap on the screen instead of an image half of the time, especially when unlocking the screen. Happens when the kernel hasn't even finished booting as well. I also get visual artifacts appearing on screen, which would be expected if my GPU was OC'd, but it's not. Tried stock, didn't help, so I know it's a hardware problem.
I suspect it might be the slider ribbon, or the screen itself, but I want to know what it most likely is before trying to order parts and spending the money. If it's being caused by the GPU, I'm just gonna pick up a new part-time job and buy a new phone altogether..
Any ideas?

Same problem, same suspicions. I'm taking mine apart and will advise.

Got it back together... no change. Might just be the GPU.

Sometimes while the screen is glitching, moving the slider gets it to work. I'm thinking the ribbon cable in the slider might be damaged on the inside.
I'm gonna try replacing it since the part is $11 on Ebay.

It's not the kernel. I've tried every gsm kernel available, wiped the boot partition with fastboot, wiped everything, installed stock. Doesn't make any difference. 100% a hardware problem.

I'm wondering if the actual flex cable itself. Since I just derped and sat on my phone and broke the digitizer, I'm just gonna get the whole screen assembly (Since it's only about 5$ cheaper). It could be a while though. I can't order it till next tuesday.
I used to have similar problems on my g2 until I replaced the flex cable. But then again, the image seems to freeze and occasionally glitch, so I'm wondering if there's a faulty solder connection somewhere since shaking/beating/banging on the phone seems to also fix it sometimes.

I managed to dig up four old threads where multiple people had the exact same problems as me, replaced the flex cable, then had zero issues afterwards.
I was just reading them an hour ago. 100% sure the cable is the problem for my phone.
Now it's just a waiting game, first waiting until I have some cash, then waiting for the e-cheque to clear, then the shipment.. I'm gonna have to wait at least a month unless somebody goes and ships one to my door instantly.. Which obviously ain't gonna happen as I'm not a developer and just someone who helps ppl with their phones.
I'm gonna save up and buy a new phone, then give this one to my 11 year old niece after it's repaired. By the time I have enough cash for one of those new HTC models, the cable should be here.

Sorry to resurrect this out of the blue, but I am also having a similar problem.
I have not rooted my R800at, but noticed first that the screen would sometimes stretch or skew into an absurdly distorted shape, only to snap back to normal after unlocking the screen.
Then, a few days ago, I also started to get this colorized snow pattern on my screen. I was wondering if you managed to fix your phone by ordering the cable? Also, not to sound too much like a pathetic n00b, is there a .doc somewhere (Or PDF) showing how to disassemble the phone to replace the cable, if that indeed fixed the problem?
I am going to see if AT&T will warranty the phone (Less than a year old, more than 30 days, not more than 90) but I am unsure if it is going to cost me an arm and a leg to do so.

The phone comes with a one-year manufacturer warranty. Since you aren't rooted or unlocked, send it in for repair. If you open up the phone to fix the cable yourself you'll end voiding the warranty permanently. If something else breaks later down the road that's harder to fix, you're gonna need it.

hey everyone well after reach tru this thread i think my flex cable is the problem as well
a while back when i unlock the fone the screen just use to be all jumpy (but i dont think dat was related to the flec cable problem cuz after changing wallpaper it stopped)
but like ah few weeks after i changed my rom, if i didn't slide out my gampad my phone wouldn't unlock, sometimes when i turn it off(the phone vibrates as usual but the screen nevr comes on) and then now like its completely gone i'm getting nothing from the screen anymore
so i'm guessing its the flex cable
and i think thats the reason for my front camera to stop wrking as well

That's correct. You all guys need to replace the ribbon cable/flex cable and the issue will be gone.

[Q] Prevent screen wake when plugging in to charge

Hi XDA,
Recently my phone has come up with a problem with the USB charging port where it thinks it is charging when it is not plugged in every few seconds. This causes the screen to wake every few seconds and then turn off to sleep, then re-awake again repetitively, draining the battery very quickly.
I'm not sure of any way to fix this problem except maybe send it back to the manufacturer for warranty and repair (which is difficult for me to do as I have already voided the warranty through rooting), or maybe buy a replacement USB port and try fix it myself. Does anyone know of any other simple and effective ways for me to fix this?
Aside from this, in the meantime I would like to know if there is any way I can prevent the screen from waking up when the phone thinks it is being charged, thus when the phone does its charging/not charging cycle, it doesn't wake up the screen every 15-20 seconds and so won't lead my battery to drain from this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am a bit of a noob at this and am unsure where I should go/what I should do to unroot, flash stock and lock bootloader. I think that would have to be a last resort though, is there not some way I could fix it myself? Is it purely a hardware issue? Also, in the meantime is there a way to prevent the screen wake issue?

Can you be a little more descriptive here, or post a pic of this? I'm having the exact same issue but don't want to mess up my phone any more than it is.
On a side note, I called Samsung this afternoon to inquire about getting the phone serviced and after he told me that unlocked phones don't come with a warranty (I bought mine that way), he actually said that they couldn't repair it anyway because unlocked phones are actually built differently and use different parts. To which I laughed. But anyway, I now need to find a way to fix this problem.

I actually did this with the edge of a cardboard card, ever so slightly but so far the problem seems to have gone away. Not promising anything though, and is probably only a temporary solution. I think what happens is the contacts between the connector in the middle of the port comes slightly into contact with the bottom through wear and tear over time and they short each other out, so by pressing it up a bit you prevent that from happening.

If you know how to decompile/recompile apk's...
/system/framework/framework-res.apk can be decompiled...
Then under /res/values/bools.xml/ you can edit the line "unplugTurnsOnScreen" to false.
I don't see a "plug in" version...but maybe this does both?
Either way...it cuts the amount of screen wakes in half.
I wouldn't recommend doing this, however...I'd get it returned.
Your problem might only get worse.

[Q] My glide is screwed after wifi download overnight

Hola, noob here with a problem.
My rogers captivate glide was behaving perfectly fine one night when I decided to download some large files over wifi. It was also plugged in for charging and I was using some app (forgot the name) to prevent my screen from turning off so I won't lose my wifi connection. I left it like that and went to sleep. Upon waking up, my phone was hotttt , the screen still on but it has faded into a greenish color with scan lines. It was unresponsive and I had to pull the battery. Ever since then, my phone would last no more than a few minutes before freezing and fading into scan lines. I thought it was a battery issue, so I got new batteries but that didn't help one bit. I even flashed the kernel and still no help. I did resets, recovery, wiped caches, took out sd card and sims, stock builts. Nothing worked. I can't connect the phone to the computer or wall charger either. The screen would instantly freeze and fades out upon plugging in the micro usb cord.
Have anyone had similar problems? Did I fried the soc? I don't think it's a problem with the screen since it was perfectly responsive the few minutes it worked. This noob needs helppp.
I've posted a video on youtube but I couldn't link to it, but if you search "captivate glide problem" you'll see a video showing the freezing problem I have. I'm from the US also, so I don't know if I could get samsung to fix it through warranty since the phone is Canadian.

Well I downloaded Modern Combat 3 and that was like about 1Gb and the screen turn off because I didn't touch it while it downloaded, and wifi kept going so I'm not sure why it didn't stay on for you

Idk about the phone so much , but i am computer technician and it sounds like you overheated it, what we might call "burned it up".
The screen symptoms you have described are a dead giveaway, especially the lines
If this was a laptop, I would be sending it off for a reflow .
Typically, the circuit board gets so hot, the solder on the ships melts enough for a tiny bit of separation. This requires a "reflow ", where specialized equipment is used to repair the solder connections.
First, you should to a factory reset , then try to do a warranty claim. (unless u have insurance from your cellular provider, then u might check with that)
*edit, sorry, I missed the warranty part the first time I read ur post*
The next option would be to check with the guys at www.mylaptopisbroke.com
Email them, ask if they concur with my diagnosis and if they can help.
I have been dealing with them for about two years and always been highly satisfied. (They are in NY, I am in TN. I have sent literally dozens of devices to them)
If none of those 3 options work out for you, start looking for a new phone.

Sorry, but I agree with the previous poster, sounds like a hardware issue. Start the warranty process, can't know if it's gonna work til you try it.
Not to try to close the barn door after the horses have bolted, but in case you get into a similar situation with your new phone, there's an easier and safer way. When you're in the WiFi screen hit the menu button and under advanced settings there is the option to keep WiFi on during sleep. Also, as you have found out, be careful with any apps that directly control the hardware.

Had a very similar scenario as the OP described. Went to bed with it plugged in and streaming DI FM in high quality, woke up in the middle of the night by burning myself on the metal back plate. Unplugged it and pulled the battery, when I woke up in the morning after a rather worrisome night sleep I discovered my WIFI would not work unless I was within a foot of the router otherwise it wouldn't get any signal. I assumed the devices internals were damaged and that is what caused the problem, glad to know someone else aside from me has had a similar issue. Best bet would be trying to get a replacement through the warranty unless you have some type of protection plan through your carrier.

I see, thanks guys for the inputs. I had a feeling it's a goner. I can't do the warranty since it's rogers and I'm from the U.S.; bought it off Newegg unlocked without a warranty. So I guess I'm screwed.

I've contacted mylaptopisbroke and they told me that phone repairs have been discontinued until midwinter 2013.
Is there anywhere I could buy a new soc??

I've heard of reflowing oneself by putting it in the oven at 550 degrees for 10 minutes or something. FWIW.
Not sure I'd want to do it myself, not having better information, but perhaps there's something out there some googling will reveal.

I've look at the sites, no captivate glide stuff. Guess captivate glide is not that popular a model. I've read about reflowing, but too chicken to try. I did took took the phone apart but saw that the LED is on the board itself and couldn't be detached; it's housed in some soft rubber feely box. I had a feeling it would melt in the oven.

I have a similar problem and other threads have suggested it's a software problem that might be fixed by installing a new ROM via odin

Water damaged phone stuck in a boot loop? Don't give up just yet...

I thought I'd share my experience with this, as I've seen posts in the past relating to a water damaged phone boot looping and I don't think I've seen a proper solution given.
First thing's first, this advice is in relation to a very specific type of boot looping. Nothing to do with rooting, or software bugs. This is boot looping that has come about as a result of water damage. It may not have been long, maybe a couple of seconds in the toilet or some brief rain exposure. Whatever it is, you know your phone has been exposed to some water and it has begun boot looping. There will be no way to get out of it, as the phone boots for 2/3 seconds max before looping all over again. Even when you go into recovery, same thing, automatically boot loops.
Most people, including the official HTC Service Centre, will tell you the motherboard is fried and needs replacement. Whilst it is possible that may be true, it isn't guaranteed. It's an easy way out for HTC, as they can charge you an extortionate price for a new motherboard and not have to bother going through the work of taking the phone apart to find out what is wrong.
The solution may be much simpler - the Power Flex Cable. This is a very small cable that goes along the top of your phone. WHen water damaged, this cable can become damaged, causing a constant boot loop. The reason being it constantly tells the phone the power button is on, causing a constant on/off cycle. In this instance the motherboard is fine and you can get a replacement Flex Cable for less than £5!
There is an easy way to tell whether the Flex Cable is the likely cause of your looping. When the phone is looping, hold down the down volume button only. Don't touch the power button. If your phone still goes into recovery (then loops again) then it is entirely possible your Flex Cable is damaged, not your motherboard.
Next step, order a Flex Cable (they are easy to find). When it arrives, you will need to open your phone (there are guides on YouTube for this), detach the motherboard and replace the Flex Cable. An advance warning, this isn't easy and you have to be extremely careful. One bad move and your phone is history. The motherboard is delicate. If you look around the internet you will find guides which show how the HTC One X is configured. Note that the Flex Cable is behind the motherboard and quite awkward to get off. I would post a couple of links but as a new member I'm not allowed! PM me and I'm happy to share some helpful links though.
You'll know quickly if this has worked. When connecting your phone it will no longer loop. Let it charge for a little while, then power on and hope for the best. If the Flex Cable was the problem your phone will reboot, and you will be able to use it and get your data off.
Note that water damage can have long lasting effects on a mobile phone. Whilst this may solve the problem for a while, it's entirely possible your phone will fail at some point down the line. Prepare for that and make sure you back up accordingly. The above advice may give you a lifeline in getting data off your phone, though, and being able to use it for a little longer. I know that when I was looking around the net I only found this advice by chance, and I think it was on a non-phone related forum. This advice may exist on the forum somewhere but if so it isn't so easy to find. I hope somebody may come across this topic when trying to fix their water damaged phone and find it is the solution.

Thanks a ton for your post. I have the same issue, as in it won't stop booting at all. However, mine didn't happen because of water damage, but when I tried to do a factory reset (the phone was only on 5% charge so I'm not sure if that screwed it up). Do you think it could still be solved with a flex cable? I tried holding just the volume button down, and it does go into the bootloader so it seems pretty much exactly like what you have described!

Just remember that opening the phone voids your warranty, and be careful if you do attempt it, as the insides of the One X are quite delicate. It would be very easy to break something!

It's very easy to do, the flex cable is a fragile piece. There are quite a few parts inside the HOX which could easily snap, which is why I always urge a lot of caution when opening the phone up!

Thanks. I've already taken the back off and noticed some broken bits of plastic...from the back....but I did notice a bit of ribbon that looked a bit screwed up....I'm gonna take it to the gizmo wizard to fix once I buy a new power flex cable.

Old thread I know but thought it was worth adding that with a water damaged phone the issues can result from the fact that tap water contains minerals which can leave a conductive residue when it dries - can change resistances, cause shorts etc. What I've done previously is used isopropyl alcohol (tape head cleaning fluid) with a toothbrush on the motherboard. Brought a phone back to life. This removes the mineral deposits and cleans everything. Had to remove the metal covers from the mobo first though. If a phone is basically dead or not working right after water damage then it's worth a go. As de4life says, just need to be super careful on the HOX with all the delicate ribbon cables.

Indeed, the phone should be thoroughly clensed if possible to wipe out any corrosive liquids left behind from the water (especially if it's dropped in an ocean). The effects of corrosion can be very slow and potentially last for months.

It worked! I replaced the power flex cable with a spare one on my HTC One X, previously damaged by being sucked by my one year old son - water damage.! It worked!

First thing's first, this advice is in relation to a very specific type of boot looping. Nothing to do with rooting, or software bugs. This is boot looping that has come about as a result of water damage. It may not have been long, maybe a couple of seconds in the toilet or some brief rain exposure. Whatever it is, you know your phone has been exposed to some water and it has begun boot looping. There will be no way to get out of it, as the phone boots for 2/3 seconds max before looping all over again. Even when you go into recovery, same thing, automatically boot loops.
Most people, including the official HTC Service Centre, will tell you the motherboard is fried and needs replacement. Whilst it is possible that may be true, it isn't guaranteed. It's an easy way out for HTC, as they can charge you an extortionate price for a new motherboard and not have to bother going through the work of taking the phone apart to find out what is wrong.
The solution may be much simpler - the Power Flex Cable. This is a very small cable that goes along the top of your phone. WHen water damaged, this cable can become damaged, causing a constant boot loop. The reason being it constantly tells the phone the power button is on, causing a constant on/off cycle. In this instance the motherboard is fine and you can get a replacement Flex Cable for less than £5!
There is an easy way to tell whether the Flex Cable is the likely cause of your looping. When the phone is looping, hold down the down volume button only. Don't touch the power button. If your phone still goes into recovery (then loops again) then it is entirely possible your Flex Cable is damaged, not your motherboard.
Next step, order a Flex Cable (they are easy to find). When it arrives, you will need to open your phone (there are guides on YouTube for this), detach the motherboard and replace the Flex Cable. An advance warning, this isn't easy and you have to be extremely careful. One bad move and your phone is history. The motherboard is delicate. If you look around the internet you will find guides which show how the HTC One X is configured. Note that the Flex Cable is behind the motherboard and quite awkward to get off. I would post a couple of links but as a new member I'm not allowed! PM me and I'm happy to share some helpful links though.
You'll know quickly if this has worked. When connecting your phone it will no longer loop. Let it charge for a little while, then power on and hope for the best. If the Flex Cable was the problem your phone will reboot, and you will be able to use it and get your data off.
Note that water damage can have long lasting effects on a mobile phone. Whilst this may solve the problem for a while, it's entirely possible your phone will fail at some point down the line. Prepare for that and make sure you back up accordingly. The above advice may give you a lifeline in getting data off your phone, though, and being able to use it for a little longer. I know that when I was looking around the net I only found this advice by chance, and I think it was on a non-phone related forum. This advice may exist on the forum somewhere but if so it isn't so easy to find. I hope somebody may come across this topic when trying to fix their water damaged phone and find it is the solution.

Thank you very much for typing this out! My Google Pixel OG (2016), which was made by HTC, experienced the exact same problem. I have just fixed it by replacing the power flex cable like you suggested.

I was surprised to get a notification for this old thread! I'm glad this worked for you. I had no idea HTC used the same design for the original Pixel.

[Q] Removing the flash storage chip

Hi all,
the wife's HOX died suddenly, won't turn on at all, wont recoginse being plugged in into either the wall or the PC, no lights, nothing.
Unfortunately she has taken a number of pictures of our 5 month year old son on it, which obviously we would like to have back!
I'm competent with taking the phone apart and putting it back togther, however what I want to know is how the Samsung Flash chip is connected to the mainboard.
I can see black glue around the outside of it, but I am unsure if the underlying pins are also soldered down.
My intention was to razor blade the glue away and then buy a knackered (but working) HOX and transfer the chips over.
Obviously I wouldnt be able to do this if the chip is soldered down. I have monkey hands when it comes to soldering things.
Is anyone able to offer any insight?
I've had a google and read the datasheet for the specific chip, but it says nothing about how it is connected.

I really can't see this being successful, sorry. I'm fairly sure the chip is soldered down, and the chances of damaging the chip are very, very high if you want to try and get it off.
If the phone didn't come into contact with water a JTAG recovery might be possible. It may not get the phone working again but it could get your data back. Alternatively companies like DriveSavers have an excellent reputation for getting data off flash chips, but it'll cost you in the region of $400 - $1400 (I got a quote a month or so back, when I thought my HOX was finished.)
I really wouldn't recommend trying to remove the chip though. You could do irreparable damage to the chip, which would render it completely unreadable.

Try first change the battery to see if the phone will start again it is the cheap way and most secure

de4life - thanks, I've had a quote for data recovery from Kroll. They want £95+ to look at it and provide a list of what can be recovered and then between £195 and £395 for actually recovering it for me. Far too expensive!
As for JTAG, there's been no water damage whatsoever; I've had a quick Google and it says this is more for Routers. How could I do it to my phone? Im not fussed about getting the phone working again, just want the contents of the flash storage back.
Thant - alas, the was the first thing I tried. New battery has made no difference. Which is annoying as her old Desire Z showed the same symptoms, we bought a new battery and its works again. She's currently using that until we decide what to do.

First thing's first, if you do go down the data recovery route try to avoid companies that charge any type of analysis fee. Kroll are a well known company but I've not heard much good things about them. I went through an extensive search of companies when I thought I'd killed my HOX and found DriveSavers were the best in terms of reputation, and they don't charge a fee to look at the phone. They are very expensive though, perhaps more so than Kroll, and you have to send the phone to the States which is daunting and costly in of itself (I assume from your £ quotation that you're UK based?).
It's good that there's no water damage. It's difficult to say what can cause the motherboard to suddenly stop working like that, but it's unlikely there has been a serious short circuit that could have affected the memory chip. Have you tried dissembling the phone completely and putting it back together? It may sound ridiculous to even try it, but when one of my older phones suddenly died I managed to get it working by taking it apart and then just putting it back together again. There are a lot of connections within the HOX motherboard framework that could easily have come loose. You might already have done this, but just a thought.
In terms of JTAG, it can be done on mobile phone motherboards with the right equipment. It's usually used for soft bricked phones to reset the software back to its original form if it's been corrupted, but I have seen cases where hard bricked phones were brought back to life using this method, including the HOX. It's not really something you can do at home (not cheaply, anyway) but there are companies that provide this service. One of the more popular services is here: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-one-x-jtag-brick-repair/ - I believe they post on here from time to time as well. Again, based in the States, but significantly cheaper than data recovery and as far as I've heard very professional. I don't know of any mobile phone JTAG services in the UK, though they probably do exist.
Keep in mind the data chip on your phone is likely fine. Even if the motherboard has stopped working, the memory chip itself is unlikely to be affected and will still contain all of your data - albeit in a scrambled form. If you send it out to companies then they can potentially damage the chip beyond repair, if you go down the route of sending the phone out to repair/data recovery companies I would urge extreme caution. If it's still on the chip the data itself isn't going anywhere. Take your time and make sure you're sending your phone to the right people, because one false move and your data is gone for good.
