Thanks to Team Kang you can flash a different modem/baseband via ODIN if you don't want to wait for the full update.
NO, this does not include wifi calling, it just changes the baseband from KID to KL1.
If KL1 is not working good for you just flash back to KID.
Go here and FOLLOW directions.

What's the point of this?
KID speedtest was at 1.2mb/s - 2.0mb/s download with 2 bars of signal
KL1 speedtest now at 4.8mb/s - 5.1mb/s download also with 2 bars of signal!
Can anyone take a screen shot of before and after?

For some it could improve your signal and for others it might make signal worse in which case you would have to go back to KID.
It varies on your area.
For the most part it's to improve signal, but coming from the Vibrant I know that's not always the case.

I see. Thanks. But if I flash the 2.3.6 update through ODIN I'll already have this new modem, right?

Thanks for the info on what the radio does. Seems harmless to give it a try.
Radio and wifi calling aside, the new update can mostly be overlooked? Normally I'd be all over this but juggernaut is too good to me right now.
thanks again and team kang

Yeah, pretty much. I have no need for wifi calling so I got what I needed which is the modem. Gonna test out tomorrow and see if it's any good.
It's really easy to flash and won't mess with the rom you're in.

Just an FYI... I was on BeastMod 4.1. I was given a Samsung link via TMobile techies to upgrade the firmware, which also enables wifi calling. The Techies MUST and I repeat must enable your specific account to have wifi calling if you want that aspect to work. Also, I did end up losing root. Just redid the Odin stuff to get back root BTW. The Kies utility also shows the upgraded firmware info.
Been using the new modem for the last two days thanks to team kang.
My download speeds havent improved. What has improved is the ping. on the old modem i was getting 860ms for ping but now its only 43ms. much better.

Hey guys and gals-
Just thought I'd share with you something I'm really excited about. I've been flashing pretty much everything that has come out over recent weeks, and even months. I just was on CM9 build 3.1, which was incredible, but unfinished. I thought it could be my daily, but it started to go into airplane mode and lose mobile data randomly, so I had to restore. After doing so, I feel the need to share with you a setup that I am blown away by. It is:
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.6)
FB 21 Modem (Steady's newest release)
EL29 Kernel (I know some might be upset it's not the newest available, but go with me here)
Everything is just SO ridiculously snappy, I can't believe what I have been missing. Since the "about phone" only has Gingerbread.EL29 in it and not the rom's developer, I can't be certain about the specific ROM I used but I'm fairly certain it's Blazer.
Anyway, enough of the rant. I suggest those who need a break from flashing all the newest things give this combo a try and let me know if you have a similarly enjoyable experience!
Out of curiosity, how long have you been on this setup?
Surely one of the [email protected] here will chime and tell you of a better way to be certain who's kernel you're using? I could be wrong...
Ill check it out now. If nothing else it will take my mind off the fact that I'm jones'n so hard for CM9 Alpha 4, so why not.
Any particular flash order? ...flash this combo all in one CWM session, or reboot in-between? ...etc. Any additional details you can provide would be helpful. I'm bored atm anyway.
Thanks for the info.

Just about six hours now with about 1.5 hours total of voice calling and consistent texts. Hasn't slowed down, but if there are any major (out of the ordinary) changes I'll be sure to report.

Unfortunately like I said, this was a restore which ended up keeping my FB21 Modem with EL29 Kernel. So I don't know the recommended way to flash, but if I were to do it on my own I would probably say format all, blazer EL29 ROM (with kernel), and then this morning is when I actually ODIN'd the FB21 modem, so probably boot up, turn off, enter ODIN download mode, and do that last.

I can confirm my blazer 4.0 setup on stock EL29 kernel with FB21 modem is insanely fast, super long battery and no problems. I highly recommend it!

I ran the fb 21 modem and everything was really awesome. except gps. gps sucked miserably. when I was using fb 15 it worked fine so I have since gone back to it.

Another good sign. I think I need to stop typing and start flashing.
So to be clear FB modems work fine with Gingerbread ROMs? No issues flashing? I was kinda on the fence about it. Im waiting for a stable ICS ROM.
Nevermind flashed it anyway on Blend 2.6.2 ROM. No problems.
Edit, weird LOS issues moved back to EL29.

In that case, your sig needs updating. Lol j/k. Were you using FB21 in combination with Blazer 4.0 and EL29, like the OP? Just curious...
Yes, no issues. A great improvement, actually.
For reference, here is a screenshot of my home screen. Note the status bar....can't recall exactly which ROM this is from but it's pretty distinguishable. My favorite thus far.
I have the NexusMod ROM for my SGS2 T989.. The Dev of the ROM gave 3 radios to flash onto it.
RADIOS - Flash these on top of any ICS Rom. RIL already taken out.

They have to deal with the signal and data speeds. The lb7 is the radio from the Blaze and it's supposed to get faster download speeds. I've read mixed results so the best thing usually to do is flash them each one at a time and see what gives you the individual the best results. That's how I came to using the lb7 after not getting any data what-so-ever on a few others

I'm going to post the correct definition of a "radio" now:
Radio's/Modems (term used interchangeably on xda) refer to the firmware used by your phone to allow the android phone to communicate one a hardware level with the internal radio in your cell phone. As all of you know cellphones are just REALLY advanced radios. This firmware is basically low level user in-accessible software, almost a little operating system of sorts, that controls the phones radio. Different radios have different features and are written differenty. Some favour connectivity, allowing for you to catch a signal anywhere, whereas others sacrifice slight connectivity for raw speed, giving you better data speeds when you do catch a signal.
On a side note, since our phones are LTE i will let you in on a little secret. When you make a phone call your phone actually drops down to 4g. LTE is not for voice, data only.

The T989 does not have LTE. Our "4G" is HSPA+.

Ok I kind of understand the whole Radio thing, but upon flashing the Nexus rom 3.8 on my T989, my 4G still works. Should I flash the LB7 radio on my phone regardless to squeeze out the best performance of data speed? I live in Atlanta.

Its up to you, but i'm of the belief that if you are williing to try things and learn, as well as improve the performance of the phone, why not? As long as you know how to go back should it fail lol

I did a test on the 3 radios for a couple days. All of the radios were pretty much the same for me, but like everyone recommended LB7 did do the best overall. I did a few speed tests on each radio in different areas. LB7 averaged the best download speeds.

It really depends on your phone and the towers you are connected to. Different modems behave differently on different phones, so to find out the sweet spot, you must try them all out and see which one suits you the best.

I havnt tried them all..but I have tried a few from el29 to FC22 to FD16,19 Fe22 to FE02,11,18 and not a single one has really done anything. Where I live, I am literally right on top of a tower and still only getting about 200-500kbs download and 200kbs upload
it does depend on the phone, current rom and service around you. as each phone handles different. for me FF18 is the best for my phone. but even still, I hit around those numbers and a tower is half mile away. lol. just a testiment to sprints wonderful network.

proximity to the tower wouldn't really matter if the sprint service in your area is like it is in my area.... mainly "3g" (don't get anywhere near 3g speeds) only and extremely oversold, theres just too many people trying to use the same tower... hell i average 100-200kbps down and like 30-50kbps up, reallllllly makes me feel good about that $10/month per line over 4 lines....
Very true.

hi all,
I didnt find any threads that answered my question well, so if its a repeat my apologies. I am running Blu Kuban 1.0.5.4, it runs nice and smooth, i love everything about it, but i dont know JACK about modems in this sense. In about phone it says my modem is FF18, which seems right from everything i HAVE read lol, but then the BK build # say FL24.
i have read that GB and ICS modems are interchangeable, but i have no knowledge of where to start or IF i should bother messing with it. i know i have to travel to downtown orlando to catch a 4g signal, and 3g kinda sux and i get almost nothing inside my apt, and wifi is alot lower than i expected given i run a full dual-band DDWRT gigabit cat6 network.
so the crux of the question is the modem in the build number what it seems like? are the 2 conflicting or am i just misunderstanding al together lol and more, is there a better setup i can use, i know that tends to be phone specific but it seems like in general some prove to work well together and some dont.
thanks in advance for any/all help

FF18 is fine to run in BK FL24. Both are ICS. However, modems vary from phone to phone, location to location. I would try updating your modem to FL24, and after you reboot, update prl and profile, and see if that improves signal. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But the short answer is no, the build is not conflicting with your modem, it's most likely the area you are in. Play around with other modems, see if it helps! Good luck

great inglihd
for the first one the FL24 i used the internal updater built into BK, but after that i switched to mobile odin bc i was afraid it was an updater issue...though my battery was a tad low but it was on the charger, and a straight wall charger too not a usb to my pc charger. ah well im not sweating it, like i said im mostly home anyway so having a kick ass rom thats rock solid is more important anyway lol
Not sure if you know but mobile Odin does not support the flashing of modems for the epic touch. It may look like it flashes but nothing happens. Either desktop Odin or recovery is the only way to flash a modem.

Read RWilco's comment in tutorial for flashing TAR and TAR.MD5 files, and it is a blanket statement regarding modems and Mobile Odin/Mobile Odin Pro (don't do it).

I don't believe this applies to GB and ICS modems. Let me check SXTP for confirmation.

I don't chance it flashing any modems. Everything else, sure. Modems, I use CWM exclusively.

with that in mind i will try using only cwm, and see if that makes a difference...thanks all for the help and the quick responses you guys all rock! im not a complete noob with flashing and such, but im not a pro either, i spent alot of time in IT and helpdesk, but now im back in school for programming, still only kinda towards the end of what would probably still be considered an apprentice level code monkey and while i some experience with linux/unix, in that realm i WOULD call myself a noob lol
ok so...i guess i have one more question, im running Blu Kuban, which uses a modified AGAT recovery...is it ok to flash a modem from that or should i just stick with desktop odin?

It's ok to flash from that. If it doesn't take, then try pc Odin. But like I said, I use CWM exclusively for modems.

Thank you for keeping us posted on your progress. Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile should just link to this forum in their communities for all tech support issues. It's faster, better info, and way friendlier. And wow it beats the heck out of going into their stores. I remember when Garwynn would post in the Sprint forum for the E4GT, and his input was far better than the Sprint monitors.
