KID and KL1 Modems/Basebands - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Thanks to Team Kang you can flash a different modem/baseband via ODIN if you don't want to wait for the full update.
NO, this does not include wifi calling, it just changes the baseband from KID to KL1.
If KL1 is not working good for you just flash back to KID.
Go here and FOLLOW directions.

What's the point of this?

KID speedtest was at 1.2mb/s - 2.0mb/s download with 2 bars of signal
KL1 speedtest now at 4.8mb/s - 5.1mb/s download also with 2 bars of signal!

Can anyone take a screen shot of before and after?

For some it could improve your signal and for others it might make signal worse in which case you would have to go back to KID.
It varies on your area.
For the most part it's to improve signal, but coming from the Vibrant I know that's not always the case.

I see. Thanks. But if I flash the 2.3.6 update through ODIN I'll already have this new modem, right?

yes-then re flash cwm

Thanks for the info on what the radio does. Seems harmless to give it a try.
Radio and wifi calling aside, the new update can mostly be overlooked? Normally I'd be all over this but juggernaut is too good to me right now.
thanks again and team kang

Yeah, pretty much. I have no need for wifi calling so I got what I needed which is the modem. Gonna test out tomorrow and see if it's any good.
It's really easy to flash and won't mess with the rom you're in.

Just an FYI... I was on BeastMod 4.1. I was given a Samsung link via TMobile techies to upgrade the firmware, which also enables wifi calling. The Techies MUST and I repeat must enable your specific account to have wifi calling if you want that aspect to work. Also, I did end up losing root. Just redid the Odin stuff to get back root BTW. The Kies utility also shows the upgraded firmware info.

Been using the new modem for the last two days thanks to team kang.
My download speeds havent improved. What has improved is the ping. on the old modem i was getting 860ms for ping but now its only 43ms. much better.

[DISCUSSION] FG20 Build

This is a thread to discuss the FG20 build for the Boost Mobile version for our phone.
As to my knowledge there are no issues running it on our Epic 4G Touch without of course a simple APN fix to get MMS.
What we've noticed is that its a more polished version of FF18 and what we should have essentially gotten for our phone.
I would like to know your experiences on FG20 and how it's running for you.
And note any bugs you notice please!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Everything seems fine, some (but fewer than FF18) apps FC on me. The multitask bug is still there, I haven't tested if the exchange bug is still there. Battery life seems a bit sketchy, but better than FF18's. This is near 92-95% percent of what our ICS update should have been in the first place.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I not sure to try the full ROM because I only flash the modem and can't even make a good call 95% of calls drop on me and the people I tell to call me they all went directly to my Voice mail.
Maybe I should try full ROM but dunno.
Edit: I just notice a few hours ago service get a Lil better, I will try again maybe was Sprint Service problems.

I've been on the fg20 modem for a few days now and not had any problem, I've have no 4g in my area and spotty 3g... my 3g speeds have been more or less the same as they were on ff11, but the consistancy and stability of the connection has improved and this has helped my battery life, not that I had an issue with my battery life... voice calls have been good and I've not noticed any change from what I experanced on ff11, which prior to this was the modem I got best results with

Hello, I tried the FG20 rom and noticed that there was no Roaming option in the settings, so I did a quick search for Boost mobile roaming and found that BST doesn't allow roaming. So for now, it's back to the somewhat unreliable (WiFi) FF18

No, sorry. And since my last post, I've gone even further back to old reliable Blazer 4.1. But am keeping the FG20 modem however, figuring that it should be at the very least no worse than either FF18 or EL29.

I'm not sure what you're questioning, but I'll try to be more specific. After trying the FG20 ROM/Modem and realizing that it had no roaming option, I first reverted to a backup of FF18 ROM, keeping the FG20 Modem. But FF18 has an annoying WiFi issue where it often disconnects while in sleep mode. So I then restored old reliable a.k.a Blazer 4.1 ROM which doesn't have any issues whatsoever, or at least any that bothered me. The modem itself, whether EL29, FF18 or FG20, all performed about the same regardless of ROM type, so as of yet, there is no reason to go back to an earlier version than FG20.
Bottom line, when I mentioned WiFi issues, they had nothing to do with modems..... I think.
I am still trying to figure out what makes these builds so different.

Seems like more trouble than its worth. I think a lot if people thought fg20 would be our silver bullet. I have a feeling we'll see an update for our ics before too long
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'm running this but I'm also on boost. Find it to be an improvement over the last few ics leaks. Using agat's latest release 4 which I loaded thru Odin since mobile Odin doesn't recognize the device anymore. All in all pretty smooth with good battery.

4G Speeds?

Sooo im sure alot of people noticed the 4G speed drop but what sad is that the fact of the s3 3g speeds are faster than my 4g on my s2
welp time to leave since sprint keeps making bad choices because now im an unhappy wimax user i use to see about 5 - 7 mbs
now all i can see is barely 1+mb on 4g unless......is a hack or fix to tweak this or is it that lte chips are jus super fast
because i did the proxy bypass thing where you change the proxies to 0 across the board a lil better but still slow
and well most of all no official jb and well you know by the time we really get jb
everyone will be on key lime pie lol just saying...

If you're in the northern/north eastern part of the US some of your problem may be due to sandy and the associated storms up there. There was a lot of infrastructure damage to the networks of all carriers up there, but with sprints infrastructure being overloaded already the damage puts even more strain on the remaining parts of the network that are functional from users being offloaded from damaged/downed towers to ones that are functioning. They were saying there would be network outages and slower speeds/increased dropped/missed calls from Minnesota east as far south as Missouri thru north Carolina. They are working on getting it back up currently and they are going ahead and doing the NV and LTE deployment instead of just patching up the damaged old towers.

What Kernel are you on? If you're not running a stock kernel, 4g speeds get borked. I got 8mpbs down on stock, then would flash a JB rom and wouldn't break 1mpbs -- it would stick right around 650kpbs. Then I could flash right back to stock and speeds would be back up. I'd try flashing back to stock and see if that's it. If so, the only other kernel that I've found that doesn't break 4g is AGATS FI27 stock repack.

Soo i tried exactly wat you said...switched to AGats fi27 and i also changed my modem to fi27
then i updated prl and profile and now im gettting 10 mbs down and 2.5up
kinda wierd that fi25 was that horrible....im running blazer rom ics but all is fine now just have a yellow triangle in the middle during boot
but i can live with it for now until i actually feel like fixing my phone with a new rom and theme lol but thank you
It is so odd how source built kernels destroy data speeds. Don't make since. Its true. That's why blazer ROM always ran stock and it runs great

You can use the triangle away app in the play store. All the triangle means is that a custom kernel has been flashed, doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with the phone.

Hey mate, thanks for the contribution! Downloaded and flashed while running SlimBean build 3. Not sure if it's just me, but I seem to have poorer reception with the MC3 Modem than I do with the MB1 Modem. With MB1 modem, I had a signal of -98 dBm. With MC3 modem, I get -120 dBm. I ended up flashing back to MB1, thanks for providing a download though!

Ive noticed that different modems act differently in different locations. For example some modems work great on the west coast and don't work good on the east coast etc. I would just stick with whichever modem works best for you in your area.

check the jellybomb thread this has been an issue for all the new modem josh doesnt want to update to, hopefully he does sat some point lol. but just to let you know what you're looking for you have to manually edit some build prop lines to say MC3 instead of LJ7. doing this will also stop the update from popping up if thats happening to you as well.

Agreed. The modem will refect the build separate from the build prop. Also packed this modem in a zip directly from the odin tar released by sextape AND tested the zip. After flashing it reflected MC3 and i had no issues. Several members of my team and other xda members have reported that they've flashed it through CWM and mobile Odin with the same results. I do believe that you must have flashed the wrong zip.

[Q] Modem questions

hi all,
I didnt find any threads that answered my question well, so if its a repeat my apologies. I am running Blu Kuban 1.0.5.4, it runs nice and smooth, i love everything about it, but i dont know JACK about modems in this sense. In about phone it says my modem is FF18, which seems right from everything i HAVE read lol, but then the BK build # say FL24.
i have read that GB and ICS modems are interchangeable, but i have no knowledge of where to start or IF i should bother messing with it. i know i have to travel to downtown orlando to catch a 4g signal, and 3g kinda sux and i get almost nothing inside my apt, and wifi is alot lower than i expected given i run a full dual-band DDWRT gigabit cat6 network.
so the crux of the question is the modem in the build number what it seems like? are the 2 conflicting or am i just misunderstanding al together lol and more, is there a better setup i can use, i know that tends to be phone specific but it seems like in general some prove to work well together and some dont.
thanks in advance for any/all help

FF18 is fine to run in BK FL24. Both are ICS. However, modems vary from phone to phone, location to location. I would try updating your modem to FL24, and after you reboot, update prl and profile, and see if that improves signal. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But the short answer is no, the build is not conflicting with your modem, it's most likely the area you are in. Play around with other modems, see if it helps! Good luck

Hmmm, sounds like you may have flashed a bad modem. Flash back, see what happens, then try another ff, fi, fk build

thanks, i tried a couple of different modems from the series' you suggested and none help, and most actually caused reboots and lockups, so im back at the FF18 and im gonna call it a failed experiment...im almost always on the wifi anyway but, it was worth a try

What method are you using to flash? Flashing modem shouldn't be causing all that
Sent from my SPH-D710BST using xda premium
great inglihd
for the first one the FL24 i used the internal updater built into BK, but after that i switched to mobile odin bc i was afraid it was an updater issue...though my battery was a tad low but it was on the charger, and a straight wall charger too not a usb to my pc charger. ah well im not sweating it, like i said im mostly home anyway so having a kick ass rom thats rock solid is more important anyway lol
Not sure if you know but mobile Odin does not support the flashing of modems for the epic touch. It may look like it flashes but nothing happens. Either desktop Odin or recovery is the only way to flash a modem.

wow..no i didnt know that, some of the other boards hinted at it working through mobile odin and some said nothing at all, a friend however said it could so i took his advice...its possible he had the same thing where it looked like it flashed but didnt...it would explain the probs i had with the other modems lol

Read RWilco's comment in tutorial for flashing TAR and TAR.MD5 files, and it is a blanket statement regarding modems and Mobile Odin/Mobile Odin Pro (don't do it).

I don't believe this applies to GB and ICS modems. Let me check SXTP for confirmation.

with that in mind i will try using only cwm, and see if that makes a difference...thanks all for the help and the quick responses you guys all rock! im not a complete noob with flashing and such, but im not a pro either, i spent alot of time in IT and helpdesk, but now im back in school for programming, still only kinda towards the end of what would probably still be considered an apprentice level code monkey and while i some experience with linux/unix, in that realm i WOULD call myself a noob lol
ok so...i guess i have one more question, im running Blu Kuban, which uses a modified AGAT recovery...is it ok to flash a modem from that or should i just stick with desktop odin?

It's ok to flash from that. If it doesn't take, then try pc Odin. But like I said, I use CWM exclusively for modems.

Thank you for keeping us posted on your progress. Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile should just link to this forum in their communities for all tech support issues. It's faster, better info, and way friendlier. And wow it beats the heck out of going into their stores. I remember when Garwynn would post in the Sprint forum for the E4GT, and his input was far better than the Sprint monitors.

[ROM][STOCK][CWM][ROOTED][MG2] - Galaxy S III (SPH-L710 – Boost/Virgin Mobile)

Ok guys and gals, here we go again. This is a stock, deodexed, version of the latest OTA MG2 build for Boost/VM variants of the Samsung Galaxy S III, with SuperSU and Busybox installed. Apks are also zipaligned. This will not install a modem and should not wipe your device. This was built from the Samsung Official MG2 build tar.
The reason I say for both variants is because as far as I can tell, this update is a “generic” update. What I mean is that whatever carrier you are on, it will update your phone and not change any of your carrier’s settings, ie, mmsc url, carrier banner, etc.
Thanks:
Google and XDA, for obvious reasons
Kennyglass123 - For posting guidance and all the awesome moderating he does around town
Stryke_the_Orc - For believing in me, for being a great friend and mentor, and always pushing me to do more
Garwynn – Without you showing me how to “catch” this, I would have never had the tar to build the zip from. Thanks for all your help and support.
Remotehugger – For being patient as I built this. I know you’ve been dying to test drive it!
If I have forgotten someone, please, please, let me know. I am all for giving credit where it is due.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for whatever you do with your phone. Please flash at your own risk

Md5: d813784d8ce01c45a9870bc9981445ef
Flashing Instructions:
This will NOT flash a modem. If you are coming from stock MD7, you will keep MD7. Same goes for whatever baseband you have right now!
1. Download zip to your sdcard
2. Reboot into CWM, TWRP, or other compatible recovery (I recommend CWM 6.0.3.1 Touch)
3. Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik(might be able to flash dirty if coming from stock TW, try at your own risk)
4. Flash zip
5. Reboot
6. Profit
Issues:
Not an issue per se, since Sprint hasn't updated to MG2, but for some reason, flashing this to Sprint, even with the modem, is causing data issues. Might be an apn/mmsc issue, but I don't have Sprint, so I can't confirm. If someone with Sprint figures this out, please post it for all to know
Note:
As I said before, this will NOT install a modem. Until we get some modem zips, the only way that I have found to get the modem I want is to flash the OTA tar, to get the modem, then whatever zip rom I want(if that makes sense).
Downloading now !!!!!!! now i will stop getting those pesky push notifications that a firmware update is available - lol - thank you tons jd - so very much appreciated -
Thanks for the hard work! Is there anyway someone can post an up to date modem that i can flash. For some reason I am not getting data.
Is this jb4.1.2 still or 4.2 yet?

Update your profile. If that doesn't work there is a thread with all of the Sprint modems in the this section. I
Sprint Modem thread. This will give you the tools you'll need to flash the modem and also revert back if needed.

I'm on Boost, and therefore have MD7, which is Boost and vm version of MD4. And I haven't noticed any real differences, except a few app updates. Sprint has not updated to MG2, only Boost and VM that I'm aware of. However, I have a theory I'd like a Sprint user to give me feedback on. If a Sprint user flashed this, please tell me what your dropdown banner and network(settings/about device/status)reads. Also, please verify mms works sending and receiving. Thanks! And enjoy. And look at the post above for the modem for this. I'll add it to the OP later.

Hi there - I'm on Sprint. I flashed your rom but unfortunately I can't get very far. I am not able to get data either with the MD4 modem or the MG2 modem. Rom will only work on wifi.

Hmmm, that's interesting. So even flashing my MG2 rom, you're unable to get any data? I would think that it would be the same concept as me(being on Boost), flashing a Sprint ROM...have you checked your apn and mmsc settings? They may be causing the issue. I may change the heading to just Boost/VM then, if that's the case. Thanks for the information.
Edit: Did the banner stay Sprint?

Shouldn't need anything at all to check that. I meant just the pulldown notification bar(should read Sprint), and in settings/about device/status, what does the network say....and I'm sure you know, but if you change your mmsc/apn settings, you'll need your MSL. Good luck, and thanks again for the info.
For those of you reading this and have a phone with the newest Boost MG2 update then you will need to call Boost to get your MSL. No way to get it with the old methods. Trust me, I've tried. LOL.
They'll give it to you easily enough. I had mine 10 seconds after telling them I wanted it.

I had to have my MSL to use the Prl Write feature. You don't need your MSL to change your APNs. All I do to change mine is flash a Boost xml with the APN Backup and Restore app.
As for the LJ7 modem, I'm running it now. I've spoke with several of us Boost guys and we're all getting better reception with the older modem. So much for newer being better.

No. Thankfully I kept my backup. I just use the restoremodem.zip to restore my backup of MG2.
If I decide to switch back I'll give it a try. Going to stay with Lj7 right now since I'm getting better signal.
