So, after a long day, of rooting, removing, mess with this, mess with that, I come down to trying to get Odin, or really my computer to recognize the epic in download mode (pwr+1)... I have installed samsung drivers and whatnot, and it recognizes the phone fine when on, with and without usb debugging, but just gives me an error that the device malfuntioned, or isnt recognized as soon as I plug it in in DL mode.
Not entirely sure where to go from here. ...
Thanks.

Odin with a stock tar
sent from my Epic 4G
Well, downloading "SPH-D700-EB13-8Gb-REL.tar.md5" now... and it shall meet with my odin soon enough.
Eventually I will really study as to wtf I am doing and not just "following directions" after reading one-click, wiki, and googling more times than I can count.
Thanks for your help jeffyv2

The situation:
While rooting my phone for the first time, I was using Odin3 v1.85 and when the progress bar was to about 95%, my power goes out. So, the firmware upgrade was unsuccessful. I now have an error screen that states "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." The problem is, my computer (and other computers that also have the correct drivers installed) will not recognize my phone. Odin also fails to recognize my phone once plugged in.
I can however put my phone into download mode, but seeing as no computer will recognize the phone, it seems fairly useless.
After reading several articles (didn't seem to find any with the exact same problem) from the forum, I am at a loss of what else I can possibly do to keep from pronouncing it bricked.
The thing that is most worrying to me is that I can't connect it to a computer which would mean I won't have access to any of the firmware to possibly make changes.
PLEASE if you have any suggestions on what I can try or need more information about my situation to form an idea, let me know. As we all know these are not cheap devices and I REALLY don't want for mine to be gone....

Do you hear any dings when you connect to the computer?
There are no dings. The computer is not detecting it all, I know there are other ways to check to see if anything is connected and I know for a fact it isn't being recognized as even being there. I might as well have plugged the other end into a banana for all my computer cares.
Can you boot into recovery? (Hold volume up and power button on reboot)
I cannot, I am greeted with the same error message as when booting normally
So, when in download mode, Odin no longer recognizes the device? The ID:COM box does not turn yellow?

That is correct
Try this on your computer. Go to device manager by typing "device manager" in the start menu search. Click on device manager. On the menu bar click on view>show hidden devices. Then in the universal Serial bus controllers look for Samsung Mobile USB CDC composite Device. If you cant see it, try to connect your device while in download/odin mode. If you can see it then right click on it and disable it. Then reconnect your phone again. If you can't see it at all, you might have officially bricked your phone.
What exactly were you trying to flash?

That was going to be my next question.
I was using the files from this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429
The problem is that my power cut out for just a second at the most optimal time it seems... while writing.
And Benthe1, I had looked at that already but checked again just to be absolutely certain and I am absolutely certain My computer is not recognizing anything being plugged in.
Why does everyone get so worried about bricks? If you listen to the devs and mods here... they say read carefully. Do your research. Ill give y'all the best hint in the world. Two in fact. Google. RiffBox. Read. Learn. Save. Ressurrect. Enjoy.

1. Not helpful.
2. I've done my research and no freak accidents in the middle of a root that screwed up the firmware somehow.
3. People worry about bricks because it is a $500 device. Anything that expensive that I have personally paid for, I worry about doing things to regardless of how confident I am in what I'm doing.

It sounds like he was listening to the devs and did his research. If you read the OP his power went out in the middle of the flash. This could happen to anyone, including you!
Have you tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling them? I'm suprised you can get to Odin mode but your computer will not recognize your phone.
I might have miscommunicated that, I can NOT get in to Odin mode. I was saying that I can get my phone into download mode, but any interaction between my phone and the computer is non-existent.
After trying to get it working before this post I was fairly certain it had been bricked, but figured asking the long shot question of whether or not anyone else had the same thing happen or had some super secret advice (a.k.a. wizardry) that I could try wouldn't hurt. I may have to head up to the Sprint store in the morning and play the dumb customer to see if I can get it replaced.
Hey Logic, this may sound simplistic but have you tried pulling the battery, using a different usb cable?
I have indeed. I know that happens to be the problem sometimes though so no harm in asking.
I've gotten that screen before. It basically happens if ODIN opens up an upload session but doesn't close it.
I was able to get out of that mode by using an USB jig.
As long as you weren't flashing the intl bootloader, you should be able to recover.

Another simple one, try rebooting your computer. We need just a ding from the computer, and there is hope. Make sure you are in download mode, then plug into the computer. Try the reverse as well.
Okay so my friend bricked his galaxy nexus (Gave it to me because he said its bricked) of course i accepted it lol. But i tried to fix it i did everything i could from reading forums i swear i have worked forever looking for a fix. It is completely unresponsive no download mode. no ADB connection because when it plugs into a computer it shows up as OMAP 4440 or something like that. i have tried all kinds of different drivers and i have tried on multiple computers (Xp, Windows7, even a mac) he said he was flashing the sdcard or something and unplugged it by accident. So i could understand that being a issue since the phone only has a internal sd card. Anyone know how to get it back? i havent seen a Jtag yet for it and i have a Jig for my Galaxy Sii Skyrocket but it doesnt work on the nexus (FYI to anyone out there the jig works on my dads samsung windows phone) HELP!
You tried different drivers? You should just use the most current ones for the phone. Did you try the new toolkit mskip posted? Did you isntall the SDK?

Thanks for the response i didnt use mskips i dont think. i have tried the galaxy nexus toolkit 6.0 or whatever but i have tried all kinds of drivers including the google official galaxy nexus i515 or something like that. it shows up as omap 4440 in app manager and disconnects and connects constantly then says device didnt install properly. what do you mean by the sdk? i cant find any way to access my phone. i think i tried something with sdk but im not sure
Yes i read up i did do that GNex Toolkit v6.0 and it wouldnt find my phone (Because of the omap 4440 disconnect and reconnect thing i believe.
First off, on't use a toolkit.
Second, when you plug it in, go to device manager, right click the "OMAP 4460" and click install driver. Either install PDANet or find the driver online and your phone should be able to be used in fastboot.
Finally, if your (Or your friends) phone was "Fully Bricked" it wouldn't be recognized by the computer, it wouldn't turn on, it would literally not be able to do anything except sit there, the fact that the computer sees it means that it is "Soft Bricked" which is much less serious.

I can get mine into CWM, but whenever I'm flashing a ROM, it reboots itself.
Install PDANet and when it asks for your phone, go into Task Manager and force close the process. This will keep the driver/program installed without needing your phone and it should then be seen in recovery.
Not working still :/
Thanks for highjacking my post twinky lol. i have seen the answer to yours around... google a little more.

Please Help!
My phone goes into boot loader and download mode however every time I flash Stock it finishes successfully and goes to the same google screen its always stuck on. I'm kinda a n00b so if anyone could help me with this (try to have a lot of detail) I would be grateful. Thanks
It sounds like what I did to my Galaxy Note before I bought my Nexus. When unrooting I overwrote my bootloader with a missed character through ADB. I tried everything, naked drivers, ODIN, all it would come up with was OMAP on the PC. I ended up having to return it to AT&T. Ask him if he was trying to root it the old way through ADB.

samiaziz, make sure you're wiping everything before flashing a stock rom. It wouldn't hurt to wipe system, cache and dalvik and then restart recovery (in advanced menu) and wipe again before flashing the stock rom.
Ok, as long as it shows up, it's still working
OMAP440 is the processor, which means, that is is working, but the bootloader is corrupt, or missing. I'd say it's corrupt (Flash-error)
The best way I've found, check this website: http://www.mobiletechvideos.com and see if they have a JTAG solution... (My JTAG device will arrive in a few weeks )
Even if they don't, send it in, and they'll figure out a way to do that I think they do some special offer, if you send it in for testing purposes...
But, other than that, there's no way I can help you. The firmware is completely fu**ed...
Tried That
I have already tried getting into recovery but that dosnt work. it takes me to the google splash screen
2 words: fastboot, linux.
sent from my i9250
Instead of JTAG-ing it, you could always try this. The maker of the Riffbox JTAG has come out with a solution for unbricking by reflashing the OMAP processor.. Aptly named OMAPFlash.
I've used it with success several times, but also had it fail on me. It can't hurt though, if your phone is already bricked.
If it's coming up with OMAP4460 (even briefly) when the phone is plugged into your computer without a battery, you are able to run the program. You just need to install the drivers for it.
See http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634/unbrick-dead-samsung-gt-i9250-galaxy-nexus-32gb-prime-via-usb-cable-freeeeeeeeeeee-1465412/ for download.

Long time listener first time caller (this is my first post here) I'm going to try not to leave out any details. Bear with me.
I rooted my Tmobile Galaxy s3 for the first time and installed CM10.1. It was great for a few months, then it started getting glitchy. So I would flash the nightly release and it would be fine for a while. I decided to unroot and start fresh. It was then that I discovered the PC wouldn't recognize the device. I followed a youtube tutorial to unroot with Mobile Odin. I extracted and flashed a stock image called Tmobile_GS3_SGH-T999_4.0.4 after clearing counter with Triangle Away.
Well it seemed to go well, unrooted my device, but now the OS is incomplete. No internet app, messaging won't work at all, and it keeps crashing and freezing. The usb port is still not working so I cannot root with my computer, and the flash counter still says 1 and status says modified.
Tmobile sent me a new one on warranty, but I'm really worried they're gonna charge me 500 bucks because it's "modified". I have a few days before I have to send it back, Is there anyway that I can fix this without connecting it to my computer? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks

First thing to do is to put the phone into DOWNLOAD mode to TEST it and see if ODIN will recognize it.
If Odin recognizes it then there is NO need to send it back to Samsung, all it needs is a proper Odin flash.
Just because when all those missing apps and the usb had issues it does not necessarily mean that Odin will not recognize the phone.
If your computer is not working or you don't have a windows computer find a relative or a friend who has one.
Even a laptop computer would do just fine.
Good Luck!
Tried that
Thanks for your response, I have tried connecting it to Odin in download mode and it still will not see it. I really don't know what the problem could be. the usb used to work fine and there has been no physical damage.

Try a different usb cable and or plug usb into different port,
if that fails, re-install the Samsung usb drivers for the phone.
Remember, if the phone goes into download mode 99.999% of the time the phone
can be flashed successfully using Odin.
The main reasons for usb issues in "download mode" are either loose connection to computer's usb ports,
usb cable intermittant or the Samsung usb drivers in the computer are corrupted in one way or another.
Thanks again
I guess I should have put this in my first post. I have tried 2 different cables in every port on 2 different computers. I have re installed the drivers multiple times as well. Also the new phone they sent me is recognized just fine.

You are in a tough spot. I don't know if you have the stock recovery or not but if not you can either download the stock rom on the phone again...you know the best way although unethical really...being that the usb port is down is to re root it and flash a rom like the gt 1300 or whatever the international version is and intentionally hard brick your phone. Hard brick meaning won't even turn on withOut jtag and that even just clears everything out and reloads software like from the factory. If the phone won't boot up then there's no way for the person to tell its been modified. Majority of the time samsung doesn't get the damaged phones its some idiot making 8 bucks an hour to refurbish phones. That's what I would suggest you do being that the counter is still saying one flash
tmobile s3 running wicked. best rom i've ever used
Pretty sure I'm on stock recovery. it does give me an option to "apply update from external storage"
Thanks for all your help, I'll try to flash the stock rooted rom through the stock recovery although i'm not optimistic.
I will check out the wicked rom you mentioned, although I am a little hesitant to root my new one after this ordeal.
but how do I re root it if I have no usb or custom recovery?

If you can get your phone to boot normally with any stock rom rooting will not be a problem at all.
If you get the phone working and booting properly you would be very lucky but from reading
everything you have wrote so far I highly doubt that you can successfully flash any rom at all
unless you have forgotten to tell us something.
Don't worry about rooting, worry about getting the phone to boot and work properly with stock rom.

I never said a word about stock recovery, I said STOCK ROM.
Invest in a JIG, it puts your phone into download mode instantly even if you cannot
do it manually with the three buttons as long as the phone is not completely dead.
You can buy a jig for less than $4.00 shipped on eBay, it's great little tool.
All you do is remove the battery from the phone and put it back in then simply plug
the jig into the usb port then in a couple seconds it will be in download mode then you
can unplug the jig and the phone is ready to be odin flashed..
Remember what I said before, just because the usb did not work with some
rom you flashed it does not mean that it will not work for download mode.
The jig was one of the best investments I have made when I started using these samsung android phones.
Once in download mode it will allow you flash the stock or stock rooted Jellybean 4.1.1 rom.
This is my best advice.
I am not having a problem getting into download mode, I will take your advice and buy a jig though in case I ever need it. Again, thanks for all your help, I think I may have to send it back and hope for the best.

Before sending it back, if I were you I would find a friend or family member who has
a windows computer and just for the hell of it install the usb drivers in the computer
just to see for sure that while in download mode and connected usb cable if Odin still
is not lighting up the [COM:xx] top left rectangle on Odin screen.
I have odin flashed many phones dozens of times in the past 3 years and I have yet
to come accross one which goes into download mode but odin is not reconized
unless there is something wrong with the windows computer or usb ports and drivers.
That only happens as I said before, if there is something wrong with the drivers,
usb ports and or usb cables or some other malfunction in the windows computer.
Just think, if it works no need send the phone to samsung plus you would have learned
something too.
I did try my other computer with the same results, tomorrow I will try it with my girlfriends laptop, I am starting to think something happened to the usb jack. It didn't work before I unrooted it either, that's why I used Mobile Odin. I am all about learning this stuff though. I plan to root every new phone I get, this has just been a little frustrating.

This is the first I heard that the usb did not work before and the usb socket might be broke.!!!
In that case since you cannot use the Wifi in your phone to transfer and install apps since it cannot boot normally
(unless I am missing something again) and you cannot use usb and it would not even help to remove the external
sd and copy any apps at all since you would have no way to install the apps.
Then you are right, you have to send it back, exchange it and hopefully you can come up
with a good enough excuse why it's not working so samsung will not charge anything )which I doubt)
I must not have been clear, I can use the phone. it makes calls, the wifi works, i can use third party messaging and browser apps. again, there has been no physical damage. the socket worked a few weeks ago when I rooted it. I only noticed it not working when I went to unroot it.
So basically it sounds like there is no way to root or install custom recovery without usb, correct?

I have read through the other threads and from what I understand I may have a "soft brick" it also mentioned to ask first before I do anything, so I apologize in advance. I tried to update to JellyBean 2 days ago and had a game that froze I did a hard reset not knowing that it could potentially cause problems, I have done it in the past with no issues. PC companion downloaded the update and I followed the instructions as usual held volume key down plugged the usb in and it initially recognized my device but only for about 3 seconds. Now everytime I plug my phone into the PC it either says "unknown device" or it doesn't do anything other than start charging it. I have tried usb debugging mode switched between MTP and MSC modes all with the same result. Also I was reading the thread for "RECOVER SOFT-brick" and it provided the link for the flash tool and my device was not listed. Thank you in advace for your time and patience.

I am not sure what the update service is that you mentioned, I tried the repair option with pc companion but the computer wont recognize my phone when i plug it in. Tried while it was off held the volume down and plugged the usb in, the device looks like it is doing what it normally would when I am updating but then it just goes to the charge screen. So I assume that is not the repair that you were talking about, unless I am doing something wrong. I don't have the option of bringing it to sony right now because I am working overseas right now. Unless maybe I mailed it in I didn't want to go that route because it is my main source of communication for while I am out here.

If possible try flashing it with flashtool and the latest JB ftf (to enter flash mode on our lt28at ion you connect the phone to the usb cable, hold vol down and connect the usb cable to the pc when flashtool tells you to).

Thank you again for your time.

you're probably missing some drivers since you said here that fastboot is working but suddenly goes to charge screen..are your using win7 or win8?

My apologies, yes I believe my phone does boot so far the only issue I can see as of right now is that I cannot connect to my laptop or anyone else's. I have tried holding the volume key down and plugging in the usb numerous times with no luck it only charges when I do this. I have read up on soft bricks and it seems simple enough but I didn't know for sure what the problem is with my device, other users had mentioned that along with usb issues I could have messaging and phone call issues. I have been using wifi and the tango app for communication for the past four months because of where I am located there is no service and also the reason I have not brought it in to a store. But back to flashing the device I have never attempted it on this device or any other so I was a little nervous about permanently bricking it, I looked at one link in another thread that had the latest JB ftf and my device was not listed. Also is there a specific flashtool you recommend? Thank you for your help

That was exactly what I thought initially as well so I did a back up on my computer and installed win7 ultimate after it was installed I made sure all of my drivers were working and up to date, I also tried it out on several other computers just to make sure it was the phone. Also just to be sure my computer was working properly I had one of the other guys here plug his phone into my computer and it came up instantly.
I think I may have misunderstood the fast boot question I thought the question was if the phone would boot from being off.

i ran into the same trouble you had [when i was unlocking my bootloader] before uncle google slapped me on the head lol
that's not too concise of a tutorial but i'll try to look for the one i found back then which had a better explanation

I followed the instructions from both of the threads, but I keep running into the same problem. My device is not listed among the drivers to install, I scrolled to the right on each one just to make sure it was not part of a group. Before I got this reply I followed the tutorial basically the flashtool for dummies like myself and down loaded the correct firmware for my device. I followed the instructions to run the flashtool selected my firmware started the flash tool, it told me to hold volume down while plugging in the phone just like I would with pc companion and probably 3 secs after plugging it in the only thing that would happen is I would get the usual windows prompt that "the device is not recognized" I thought for sure this was the solution, perhaps I am missing a step? I am officially at a loss now lol I even went to the threads specific to the ion lt28at and it was all quite simple right up until plugging in, any more insight would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the link but that was basically instructions on how to start the flash tool properly it seems, I still can't get the flash tool to recognize it is plugged in. I believe the issue is with the device driver, problem is the ION lt28 is not in the list of drivers. Is there another one that I am supposed to use that is compatible? I thought it had to be specifically for my device, again I appreciate all the help you all are giving me this is becoming a frustrating process for what seems so simple

Try Flashtool-drivers [ do a googole search ] download it and see if you can find the drivers there.
I know this is over a month old, so i'm sure the info is no longer helpful...but this 'driver' issue has plagued Ion owners since the phone released...
in reality...its not a problem...but just 50 members all sort of saying the same thing in different words...
the Lt28 series of devices does NOT need any model specific driver from that install_drivers.exe app in flashtool's directory...You ONLY have to install the flash mode driver (for an Ion with a locked boot loader) or flash mode and fast boot drivers for unlocked bootloaders, if you play on using fastboot with flashtool for various services...
you DO NOT need to install that entire list of drivers for an Ion...they have nothing to do with this series of phone...all other necessary device drivers are automatically installed when setting up PC companion, or simply plugging in the phone (if you skip pc companion)...
any issue with flash tool and it saying 'device drivers not found'...you're missing the flash mode driver...and nothing else...
