Long time listener first time caller (this is my first post here) I'm going to try not to leave out any details. Bear with me.
I rooted my Tmobile Galaxy s3 for the first time and installed CM10.1. It was great for a few months, then it started getting glitchy. So I would flash the nightly release and it would be fine for a while. I decided to unroot and start fresh. It was then that I discovered the PC wouldn't recognize the device. I followed a youtube tutorial to unroot with Mobile Odin. I extracted and flashed a stock image called Tmobile_GS3_SGH-T999_4.0.4 after clearing counter with Triangle Away.
Well it seemed to go well, unrooted my device, but now the OS is incomplete. No internet app, messaging won't work at all, and it keeps crashing and freezing. The usb port is still not working so I cannot root with my computer, and the flash counter still says 1 and status says modified.
Tmobile sent me a new one on warranty, but I'm really worried they're gonna charge me 500 bucks because it's "modified". I have a few days before I have to send it back, Is there anyway that I can fix this without connecting it to my computer? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

First thing to do is to put the phone into DOWNLOAD mode to TEST it and see if ODIN will recognize it.
If Odin recognizes it then there is NO need to send it back to Samsung, all it needs is a proper Odin flash.
Just because when all those missing apps and the usb had issues it does not necessarily mean that Odin will not recognize the phone.
If your computer is not working or you don't have a windows computer find a relative or a friend who has one.
Even a laptop computer would do just fine.

Try a different usb cable and or plug usb into different port,
if that fails, re-install the Samsung usb drivers for the phone.
Remember, if the phone goes into download mode 99.999% of the time the phone
can be flashed successfully using Odin.
The main reasons for usb issues in "download mode" are either loose connection to computer's usb ports,
usb cable intermittant or the Samsung usb drivers in the computer are corrupted in one way or another.

I guess I should have put this in my first post. I have tried 2 different cables in every port on 2 different computers. I have re installed the drivers multiple times as well. Also the new phone they sent me is recognized just fine.

You are in a tough spot. I don't know if you have the stock recovery or not but if not you can either download the stock rom on the phone again...you know the best way although unethical really...being that the usb port is down is to re root it and flash a rom like the gt 1300 or whatever the international version is and intentionally hard brick your phone. Hard brick meaning won't even turn on withOut jtag and that even just clears everything out and reloads software like from the factory.If the phone won't boot up then there's no way for the person to tell its been modified. Majority of the time samsung doesn't get the damaged phones its some idiot making 8 bucks an hour to refurbish phones. That's what I would suggest you do being that the counter is still saying one flash

Pretty sure I'm on stock recovery. it does give me an option to "apply update from external storage"

I will check out the wicked rom you mentioned, although I am a little hesitant to root my new one after this ordeal.

If you can get your phone to boot normally with any stock rom rooting will not be a problem at all.
If you get the phone working and booting properly you would be very lucky but from reading
everything you have wrote so far I highly doubt that you can successfully flash any rom at all
unless you have forgotten to tell us something.
Don't worry about rooting, worry about getting the phone to boot and work properly with stock rom.

I never said a word about stock recovery, I said STOCK ROM.
Invest in a JIG, it puts your phone into download mode instantly even if you cannot
do it manually with the three buttons as long as the phone is not completely dead.
You can buy a jig for less than $4.00 shipped on eBay, it's great little tool.
All you do is remove the battery from the phone and put it back in then simply plug
the jig into the usb port then in a couple seconds it will be in download mode then you
can unplug the jig and the phone is ready to be odin flashed..
Remember what I said before, just because the usb did not work with some
rom you flashed it does not mean that it will not work for download mode.
The jig was one of the best investments I have made when I started using these samsung android phones.
Once in download mode it will allow you flash the stock or stock rooted Jellybean 4.1.1 rom.
This is my best advice.
I am not having a problem getting into download mode, I will take your advice and buy a jig though in case I ever need it. Again, thanks for all your help, I think I may have to send it back and hope for the best.

Before sending it back, if I were you I would find a friend or family member who has
a windows computer and just for the hell of it install the usb drivers in the computer
just to see for sure that while in download mode and connected usb cable if Odin still
is not lighting up the [COM:xx] top left rectangle on Odin screen.
I have odin flashed many phones dozens of times in the past 3 years and I have yet
to come accross one which goes into download mode but odin is not reconized
unless there is something wrong with the windows computer or usb ports and drivers.
That only happens as I said before, if there is something wrong with the drivers,
usb ports and or usb cables or some other malfunction in the windows computer.
Just think, if it works no need send the phone to samsung plus you would have learned
something too.
I did try my other computer with the same results, tomorrow I will try it with my girlfriends laptop, I am starting to think something happened to the usb jack. It didn't work before I unrooted it either, that's why I used Mobile Odin. I am all about learning this stuff though. I plan to root every new phone I get, this has just been a little frustrating.

This is the first I heard that the usb did not work before and the usb socket might be broke.!!!
In that case since you cannot use the Wifi in your phone to transfer and install apps since it cannot boot normally
(unless I am missing something again) and you cannot use usb and it would not even help to remove the external
sd and copy any apps at all since you would have no way to install the apps.
Then you are right, you have to send it back, exchange it and hopefully you can come up
with a good enough excuse why it's not working so samsung will not charge anything )which I doubt)
I must not have been clear, I can use the phone. it makes calls, the wifi works, i can use third party messaging and browser apps. again, there has been no physical damage. the socket worked a few weeks ago when I rooted it. I only noticed it not working when I went to unroot it.
So basically it sounds like there is no way to root or install custom recovery without usb, correct?

I'm looked everywhere but nothing. Please help if you can.
I was on BeastMOD2.5 then some things on the phone were not working (Tmobile S2) so I called in and they shipped me a replacement. I used this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323878) to restore it back to stock and unroot the phone and it worked besides one problem, I still got the synergy kernel gray screen at bootup, so as of now, i'm at stock, unrooted just with that synergy kernel screen. I looked it up and found the ODIN stock way to get it back so I tried that way, but now everytime I hook the USB to my computer to try to ODIN it, it always says USB not recognized (I've tried searching for fixes: clean USB, reinstall drivers, reinstall Klies, other computers, other USB cord, other USB ports but nothing).
I just need to get that synergy kernel screen off from bootup, but now that I cannot hook up the phone to any computer, what should I do? Is there a wireless option I have? Is there a way to brick the phone to where it won't even boot up when tmobile gets it back that they wouldn't even know? thing is it will also charge using a computer, but the computer won't recognize it (im done the whole settings USB options as well)

does it recognize it in adb if usb debugging is enabled?

I've tried that and i've tried this on 4 PC's and my usual Mac that I use to transfer files but no luck.
I also tried the debugging mode but nothing as well. Ill try for a couple more days with random things but since the rom is stock and everything is basically like out the box status if I were to return it with the synergy kernel screen on bootup, what would tmobile say even though everything is stock even the kernel?
Hey Buddy, there had been a few of us that has had the same problem.
For some reason, after you restored your phone back to stock, you still have the Synergy Logo when turn on and you lose your USB drivers, somehow, I don't know why. I tried so many ways for my computer to locate my phone, but after so many hours of looking, I gave up. Sold my phone to my friend and got another one.
Lesson learn. Someone should look into a solution for this problem

This is good to know for anyone that is looking to restore phone back to stock.
So I'm guessing people should install stock kernel first via Odin and then flash stock rom/recovery.
Maybe this will take care of Synergy logo.
What steps did you take?

+1 From the posts Ive read the people that have had this issue have used the zedomax flash. Safest bet for anyone looking to go back to stock should stick with the odin method. I think there should be a warning in the index thread next to the [HOWTO] [ROM] How to Unroot SGH-T989 Painlessly link about the usb issue and also the kernel boot image even thou if people would just read the whole thread they would see that others have already reported the kernel image issue......
Returning the phone with that would land you an out if warranty fee

If you flash this stock kernel zip before you flash the easiest unroot method ever it will give you stock kernel and remove any custom kernel logo.

Is your recovery stock. ? If its not you can always put it your sd card and flash it that way.

I know. There's number of similar threats. I have read them all. Or at least feels like it.
I managed to soft brick my sgs2. I was playing with this new lol boot (dual boot app) from market. I think I pushed something wrong in this app. After that my intention was to make a CWM backup before I start to play seriously with lol boot. At the second I pressed backup from the menu, my phone shut down. Now I'm in a sitsuation whre I can't enter recovery mode. There's just this Samsung Galaxy logo. At the time I had CheckRom v4 installed.
My intention was to flash stock rom via odin. I can enter to download mode just fine BUT odin or kies isn't able to connect to phone. Kies is recognizing the usb connection, but fails to connect it properly. Here's a list what I've tried so far:
- Restart PC (100x)
- Restart Odin (101x)
- Restart Kies
- Reinstall USB Drivers (with Kies and without)
- Trying different computer which has never seen Kies or any Samsung USB drivers
- Reinstalling Windows (W7 x64)
- 3 different USB cables (2 stock Samsung)
- Different USB ports
- Also Nexus S USB drivers as mentioned on another thead in XDA
- Starting odin after USB connection, and before
- Googling with any keywords I have come up
Is there anything else I can do for now?
you mean when you try to connect to odin there is no yellow square ?
maybe try to remove battery for + 90 sec and try to enter in odin ?
ps in this situation you must forget kies since its barely work when everything is fine with the phone ...
Thanks for your reply. Odin doesn't 'do' anything when i connect my device. I'm using version 4.43. When I connect s2, windows install two drivers, Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device and Samsung Mobile USB Modem. I also tried taking battery off. Actually the battery wasn't attached for 6 hours, still no success.
I didn't see this in your list, but have you tried entering download mode and connecting?

Guys. I think there is some Android God that came to help me. After ~36 hours of googling, crying and throwing the phone to the wall, I've managed to solve my problem! As I was googling cheap shotgun for me, I had a vision. Why not, let's try older odin. The solution was v1.83. And right when I plugged in my phone with this odin, it got recognized! At the same second! Nuff said, I'm satisfied. And do you know what is the best part? I flashed with original stock rom and every app, every launcher and so on was STILL WORKING and running!

EDIT: How the heck the custom binary counter went to zero? I was thinking its only possible with usb jig?
not older odin! but the one u need for sgs2 (and 1) only use odin 3 v. 1.83 or v. 1.3.

I only use odin3 v1.3 or odin 3 v.1.83.
As far as I know, you cannot use anything else, since it is not made for your device!

to reset your binary, there is only one way to do it. u are right, usb jig.
however, beware, i read somewhere saying that GB ver 2.3.4 onward has a new version of bootloader which prevent usb jig from resetting the counter, which mean samsung is trying to lock the bootloader now. however, flashing the old bootloader still helps (claim by others).
so I was installing a new boatloader through odin and it failed to install; so I disconnected it. Ever since then, my computer simply will NOT recognize my phone. I have tried every possible method (using different slots and cable). Still, it will not recognize my phone at all.
Has anyone here ever encountered a similar situation and have found a solution?
I would highly appreciate any help. Thanks
What does the phone boot to?
Have you tried a USB jig?
The bootloader takes seconds to flash. Did you really press start and immediatly pull the USB cord? or did it not complete then you pulled the cord? If the latter, what did ODIN say in the logs?
I can get into odin or recovery mode with no problem, I loaded a custom testing version of an ICS Rom that failed to completely install.
I am waiting for my usb jig to come in the mail.
It installed like 80% and then said failed, then I removed it because it said it failed.
I know all my drivers are good because my sister has the same phone and it is unrooted and odin recognizes it fine.

If you can get into Odin mode then Odin should be able to recognize your phone. Are you sure that Odin on your PC is not recognizing your phone?
Also, try flashing the el26 stock rooted update through cwm. Calk has the appropriate zip over in the dev section.

Where did you find a boatloader for our phones?!?!?!? That would be a truly Epic accessory for all boatloading enthusiasts! Think of the activities!
Haha, in all seriousness though, I hope you can get it figured out man, bricked phones are no fun!
yes, im 100% sure, Ive read of a few cases of people having similar problem. Problem that come from disconnecting a phone while loading a new boatloader. Once that happens, odin will not recognize a phone even if it is in Odin mode. Ive spent atleast 15 hours in total trying to get it to work

Is this one made for E4GT or one for the european GS2?
If you can get into recovery just take the sd card out and put it in a sd reader and put a rom on there and flash it. I would use the stock rom. Something simillar happened to me and this is how I fixed it. I didnt have a card reader so I just used my digital camera, Thank god for that!!! Hope it all works out.

Good question! I almost bricked my phone by putting a rom on there that was for the international version! You need to triple check to make sure what you are putting on is actually for your phone!

Omg again people don't read. We don't have ics from for our phone! Gosh try to download the international gs2 drivers of get your phone jtaged. If not you got a paperweight

Your problem isn't that you disconnected the phone while flashing a new bootloader.
Your problem is you flashed the european GS2 version of the bootloader. After doing that the USB port is pretty much disabled and nobody has found how to enable it.
interesting... any theoretical methods to get it to work? do you think there will be a solution to fix it?

Nothing should be flashed to the Epic Touch unless its in the development section for the Epic Touch. Even then you should read up and know the pros and cons of flashing it. I don't recall anyone getting their phone back after doing this.

Well Mobile ODIN won't flash the bootloader AFAIK, so if you have no way to flash the bootloader, the only other possibility will probably be JTAG, which is basically opening up the phone connecting to some pins/leads on the board and using some software to flash. I haven't seem anyone posting about this but probably there are techs who have the proper setup to do it.
damn, do you think if I go to a sprint corporate store and just say I was trying to update the phone via samsung kies OTA or something, will they be able to fix it? I am waiting for my jig to come in the mail to clear the download count, any opinions what I should tell sprint to avoid getting my warrenty voided?

Ya because like everyone else said flashing that file that wasnt for your phone messed up the sd reader. Same thing happened to me once but I was still able to acess the internal storage that the phone has built in but i didnt have any roms on there. I was however able to flash through odin and dowload mode. Thank god that worked for me! If that isnt working for you I gotta be honest I really dont see a way to get the phone back up and running but I am by no means a pro. I would keep at it. When I almost bricked my phone I was going to give up too but I stuck with it and the fine people on this site pulled me through! You are at the right place trust me very smart people here!
thanks, this phone has been bricked for a week, Im still waiting on my usb jig to come in the mail so i can hopefully clear the binary download count because I want to take it to sprint? since my usb and sd reader isnt working, will the usb clear the odin thing? if it doesnt, im completely screwed. im willing to short out my phone worst case scenario... I need it a replacement (i dont have insurance but i have warrenty)... any ideas? should i short it out or take it to sprint... what excuse should I make up if I decide to take it?

thanks, this phone has been bricked for a week, Im still waiting on my usb jig to come in the mail so i can hopefully clear the binary download count because I want to take it to sprint? since my usb and sd reader isnt working, will the usb clear the odin thing? if it doesnt, im completely screwed. im willing to short out my phone worst case scenario... I need it a replacement (i dont have insurance but i have warrenty)... any ideas? should i short it out or take it to sprint... what excuse should I make up if I decide to take it?

Ya if you have warranty i would actually just short it out! I had a friend that had an iPhone and he hooked it up to a computer with a messed up usb. It shorted it out, he took it back with his warranty info and walked out with a brand new iPhone no questions asked. If you dont and they see that it was routed you are going to be **** out of luck I can tell ya that. They definitely will inspect it to make sure there was no foul play with it trust me, best bet if you cant get it running is to short it out, and use the warranty. When you take it in just say it went off and you couldn't get it to go back on.
Honestly breaking the phone is your best option since the insurance will cover that. If you short it out or make the batter overload while it's in the phone then it's covered by the warranty. Also, clearing the download counter is pointless - if Sprint does manage to fix your phone it'll be pretty obvious you did something that made it FUBAR - mostly the international GS2 bootloader. Also, isn't the international GS2 GSM? Which means you can't reset it using a JIG, GSM versions don't support it.
Either way when you get a new one - make sure you read EVERYTHINGlet me say this again since people seem to take this stuff lightly: READ EVERYTHING BEFORE FLASHING if we had ICS for this phone don't you think the Dev section would be blowing up with ICS ROMs? Common sense seems to be the one thing that isn't common anymore....
Hope you figure something out though but I wouldn't hold my breath.
I can get into download mode, but odin doesn't recognize, the only other screen i get too sdays "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again, but Kies cant connect to it, am i screwed? Please help this all happened from changing my screen density, i cant find anyway too restore, i'm not a noob and am in desperate help, i'm gonna be soo bummed if i brick, but i have a feeling if i can get too download mode, there must be a way too restore it.
BbbYou say no recovery, but you should have at least stock recovery I think. Try holding volume up and power, is you can get in, restore to stock from there.
If doesn't work I would start by reinstalling the drivers or try a different computer.
You'll be fine.
Also you should state you rom, what you did before, rooted, etc

I flashed the newest version of Roman BB's AOKP CM9 Kang and tried to change the density, i went too restore my nandroid and it froze before it finished, I tried odin and the first 2 times it recognized but both froze before the end. im kinda couch surfing so now i'm incredibally screwed without a phone, please help.

Roman bb's most updated AOKP, i changed the screen density and when i went to reboot it bootlooped, so i tried restoring a nandroid wich failed, tryed again, and now i cant get too recovery, i can only get too download mode, so i tried using odin too go back too stock, it failed almost at the end, twice, now i cant get odin to recognize my phone and it wont turn on, the only thing i can do is get too download mode, and too the thing saying use kies recovery, which does nothing because it won't connect. I'm at a total lost, i'm so scared i lost my only source of income, at this point in my life, if i dont have a phone, i dont have work or food or a warm place too sleep. Please anyone with any ideas please help.

When going from ICS to anything else you should use ODIN to go back to stock. Anything else and you're risking a brick. More here:

I've never heard that one before. What do you think is unique about the stock micro-usb cable?
micro usb cable is not unique. There's standard size of micro usb and pin numbers, etc. But based on the product, it's not fit well each other.
One example is old LG micro usb cable is not going well with Samsung phones.
Of course, I tried this by myself and it always fails. But original micro usb cable which comes together with phone, it never failed.

i didnt go from ics to anything else, i changed the screen density, and it seems no one in those threads can get into download mode, i just cant get my odin to recognize my phone.

use a different cable and uninstall drivers and reinstall reboot computer also

Yeah now that you mention it I realized my nook color micro usb cable has a longer metal end-piece than my E4GT, and won't connect properly. I thought the length of the metal prong would have also been standardized. Go figure.

This is the problem unless you flashed a gb kernel/recovery first. You should not do anything in ICS recovery.

Its true not all cables are the same, but the funny part is from the beginning of OG Epic days we figured out quick the only thing you should do with the stock cable is charge... its garbage. Maybe the new model is better, havent tried it, but it looked pretty much the same, thin little thing... I use my 4 year old BBerry cable, about as thick as a cat-5... never had an issue. But yeah, try new drivers, cable, diff PC, use a USB that is physically part of the Motherboard of the PC (desktop)... all these things help with the shoddy drivers, etc... you may get lucky...

But you said you did attempt a restore through CWM after the bootloop, correct? If you did and you're having problems you *may* have bricked. Using ODIN is a surefire way to confirm whether you did or not. If you didn't attempt anything through CWM while having CM9 installed then you may not be bricked but are obviously still having issues. As it has been said before - and quite often - CWM at your own risk; ODIN is believed to be the safest option.
Regardless, if you're having problems and the USB cable doesn't fix it I'll still recommend trying to get back to a GB stock ROM by ODIN. At the worst you've lost what you have done since the last backup, since you can restore that from the backup once you get back to GB. With so many bricked phones lately it may be best to err on the side of caution this time...
I've tried everything mentioned, except a different pc, i tried linux, on my pc odin doesntr recognize my phone, , but i just went and plugged a flash fdrive in so now im thinking my computer is having usb problems, so im gonna try another computer, i also made a usb jig to reset the odin counter too take it too sprint but it didnt work... i'm so confused and screwed without my phone. ive had this problem before and basically my phone would turn on but no signal sd card didnt work wouldent read in computer but if you cant get it to work and have fifty bucks u can go to mobiletechvideos.com and it will take about mabe 3-4 days mine took a week since i sent on a friday but it costs fifty bucks and the only thing when i came back that wasnt working 100% was the picture gallery. true him if it comes down to it
Well, since you're getting the firmware upgrade error, I'm gonna bet your phone is bricked. That happened to me, I finally took it to the Spring repair center and they couldn't fix it, so they swapped my phone out.

Sprint Epic 4G Touch Appears Bricked
My Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will no longer connect to my computer (also tried another computer and different usb cable), after a failed attempt to upgrade to ICS 4.0. The phone will not load up now to 'normal' operating mode.
It will only come up to the message:
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I can no longer get into Recovery or Download modes. At least none that work. (See below)
I also built and tried the USB jig solution, which does power on the phone, but it then comes up and says:

Last week I plugged in to charge my phone overnight with the phone off. In the morning, I was surprised to find that the screen was on and what should have been a full green battery was instead a scrambled image that kind of looked like a battery. I powered on the phone and it worked so I thought nothing of it but later on that night I needed to pull a file off my phone via usb and realized that the phone will no longer detect the usb host, ie. no mtp options whatsoever. It at least does still charge.
Since then I have tried cleaning the usb connector, pulling the battery/sim, setting the UART using *#7284#(PDA, mtp+adb), multiple computers, and multiple cables(including the Samsung one) and the phone still doesn't ever think its connected to a host. So today I decided to use my php warranty service which meant I had to restore stock recovery and rom. So I grabbed mobile odin and a stock UVLDJA image. Ran Triangle away once to clear the counter, and another time to verify it was at zero, and installed the full image via mobile Odin. When the phone booted back up, it successfully installed the rom only the flash counter is back at one and now I have lost root. If I had used my head I should have flashed just the recovery first but I wasn't thinking....
Any suggestions on how to get root back? I read these forums quite a bit and I am thinking that I am SOL but hoping maybe someone has a suggestion I haven't seen yet.

Checking your flash counter in TA trips your counter, that's why it's at 1. Use mobile Odin to flash root66 to get rooted again.

Oh, duh! Yes lol you do. There would be no other way. Have you tried a factory reset then try to connect your phone? You could also try to install Kies on your PC to make sure all drivers are correctly installed.
If you wouldn't have said you have tried other cables, I would have for sure thought defective cable. Some cables are also charge only.

Yeah, did the factory reset along with all of the other suggestions I could find. I typically try to avoid Kies and since I cannot even get the device to enumerate I'm pretty sure it's not driver related.
I think my only hope would be getting root or twrp intalled via stock recovery or adb over wifi.

download Odin3 v1.85
Put your phone in download mode (vol down=menu=power then after the screen comes up press vol up
plug the phone usb to the computer,
run odin
the first box on the top left should have a colored highlight (the ID:COM )
if that pops up, your phone is 99% functioning correctly, and only problem is in your computer.
When trying do do a regulad usb transfer to the computer:
I have noticed, sometimes I have to connect, wait a bit (like maybe 2 minutes)
then disconnect the cable for about 15 sec then connect again, and it pops up after a minute
you could also try this:
open explorer on the computer(double click on my computer) and see if there is a t999 in your left pane. Sometimes the autorun function in the
computer gets farkled and it does not open automatically and you have to do it manually,

Go to galaxys3root.com and follow his t.mobile root tutorial WORD FOR WORD. USE THE USB THE PHONE CAME WITH AND KILL SAMSUNG KIES. also run Odin before you connect the phone to Pc, should be no problem bruh once it took me a couple of hours making love to my comp before I got a colored com box. And use a windows PC Mac suxx for this kind of.

I've basically given up trying to get the usb port working... I am convinced this is a hardware issue. Nothing shows up in the device manager when I plug in the phone whether USB debugging is on/off or I am in normal mode or download mode. The phone will never bring up the MTP options in the notification bar either. Again this is with multiple cables on 2 different comps where it used to work just fine. I think whatever bad charge experience I had last week damaged the USB host controller on the phone.
I think what looks promising now is using adb over wifi(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26844535) along with root via adb(http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-u-s-canadian-dual-core-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx/). I can't do this at work but I'll follow up tonight on what will hopefully be success in case this could help someone else out.
Edit: Ugh, some quick googling shows that I need either root or working USB to make adb over wifi work.

I don't think so.... the micro usb port is mounted on the main board and short of replacing that entire board it would be a ton of time/effort for something that I don't exactly think is the problem.

This happened to me, and it was from using different devices in the same port (with same cable). I switched ports and it worked. Might not work for you, but worth a mention - it really stumped me and I tried everything including restoring the OS to an earlier point.

Now that S3's are getting older, more people will be losing their functional USB ports. I found holding the phone vertically with steady even pressure on the plug was the trick to getting a solid connection on my flaky port, at least enough to get stock back (to send it back). That was the longest 15 minutes of my life (OK, not, but it was in the top 10, mostly because it was simultaneously nerve-wracking and insanely boring).
I tried de-soldering a usb port on a Galaxy S. Yeah.... To say it mildly, the way Samsung sets them up is booby-trapped. You can't get the existing silver solder hot enough to melt without toasting the board somehow. The boards are also wafer-thin and dimensional on both sides. Despite generally having a knack for fine tuning and detail work (thanks to estrogen or something), I felt like an ogre in a doll house. I definitely would suggest having all the (exactly) right tools in place before tackling it. Even then it might not be the port itself, but something between the actual port and the other components.
One other thing to note, Mobile Odin is an amazing tool, but it's even ***more crucial*** than regular Odin to get your ducks in a row before you flash. Know exactly what you are flashing what your next steps are, and what your results are supposed to be. One thing in particular: if you flash a stock ROM, it includes stock recovery, and you will lose root. make sure you've run Triangle Away before you flash stock (which won't trigger your counter, but anything else will).
I plan to keep the Triangle Away and Mobile Odin apk's ready on ExtSD to install, and a copy of a stock image (ROM) as well, from now on, on all my phones. You never know when that port is going to give up the ghost.
Just thought I'd add a couple things here. More times than not, when someone thinks their usb port on the phone is bad, it's actually just the cable. Even if the cable works on something else, or works to charge the phone. They ruin much, much, more easily than anyone wants to believe! Especially when you plug/unplug it as often as with a phone.
As for Mobile Odin, I fully agree! It's one of my favorite apps by far! But if you're going to keep stock firmware handy, which I highly recommend, you may as well keep the root66 version. Flash back with that, then run triangle away, then in SuperSU, choose full unroot. Then all you need is a factory reset. Making TA the last step makes for far fewer user mistakes.
