I'm running Blazer 1.2, Rogue Kernel. Stock modem (EG30).
Got the prompt to update, selected Install Now.
Phone started to countdown from 5 to restart.
Saw Galaxy S II screen (with the yellow exclamation point)
Saw an Android with a progress bar; progress bar proceeded to complete.
Then saw an Android with an exclamation point in a triangle. Phone wouldn't respond for about 15 mins.
Then I got really worried.
Pulled battery, reinserted battery - phone booted immediately into CWM (Rogue Recovery) - didn't even see Galaxy S II screen with the exclamation point.
Selected Reboot system.
Held my breath.
Phone came back to life (thank god!).
What did I do wrong? How should I properly install the update? Should I unroot?
I'm trying to get the prompt again via About phone > System updates > Update firmware. Nothing. Did I get "marked" as rooted?
Just sharing my near heart attack (lol!).
your not stock....

Before you get attacked, I'll help you. Never accept updates.
That's really all there is to it. That update would have bricked your phone. Well, soft bricked it. But regardless, still would have been bad mojo.
We have had EK02 (the update that updates your phone for LOS and 4G signal loss during phone calls) for quite some time. In fact within 24 hours of it being released the modem, kernel, and system were already separated and flashable individually. I would wait for Blazer ROM to update to kernel and system provided by the EK02 update. But the modem you can flash yourself through ODIN or Recovery.
P.S. just make sure that you are currently running modem EG30 *BEFORE* (I cannot stress that enough) *BEFORE* You flash the modem because otherwise, my friend, you will have a very expensive paperweight until one of the geniuses here figures out how to fix it. The modem provides the extra signal strength. The kernel is what provides the LOS fix I believe as the kernel has been shutting the down the radio incorrectly and not waking it up. Essentially killing it. I could be wrong but that seems to be the mmost popular theory.
The modem and kernel working in random is what's best. If blazer doesn't support both the EK02 modem and kernel I would switch to a ROM that does.

Thanks for your speedy response.
I realize that my ROM and Kernel are not stock, however I've never flashed a modem. Attached is my about phone.
What do you recommend to get back to 100% stock? There seems like there are all the same.

Thanks! Wow, did not know that.
Ohhhh man just knowing I almost soft bricked it. Hahn.
There is also Eg30 Tar file that would put you back 100% stock no root or anything.
Ok, so I've decided to pop my cherry and go to custom ROMs. I'm going to try Blazer first. I'm currently on Stock EK02 everything from the OTA. I rooted using Auto Root. No problems before or after rooting. Needed some advice on the order of operations. I'm thinking of allowing the EL29 OTA update to take place to update the modem and kernel. I'm assuming that the OTA will go through even though I'm rooted. Then, I was going to to flash Blazer. Are the Stock EL29 modem and kernel a good match for Blazer or is there a generally accepted better combination? I was thinking that Stock modem and kernel might be better optimized and tested by Sprint to work better on the network. Thanks!
U can download blazer it has a kernel with the ROM....all you have to do is flash the modem and then the ROM and your good no need to do the update and then have to root again and install clockwork which if you already have then will cause the update to fail....just more steps that can get messed up if you don't read

The ota won't work. Manually flash the modem with cwm. I like the gunslinger kernel. The odex a deodexed cwm flash script improves performance also.
My personal setup is cal's 2.8.1 with gunslinger kernel and the odex script. I also am using a gingerbread launcher. I also went in and disabled the unneeded apks in /system/apps. I am running the EL26 modem because the phone was pissing me off while using streaming radio. It would fall back to 1x and not come back out. Oh yeah, I also did the tweaks for 4g quicker locking and connect with lower signal. On the 3g side, I zeroed out the multimedia addresses and proxies. I'm not over clocked. That may not be the best setup for everyone but its working good for me so far.
Thanks guys. I'm now thinking that since my call quality doesn't have any problems, I might just leave the modem as is on EK02. I'll just flash Blazer with the included kernel. Having EK02 modem won't cause a conflict right? Having not done this before, I should install CWM, then from CWM install "Calkulin's Format All" then install "Blazer". Do I need to reboot or clear any caches in between those two?
Going to test out Blazer for a bit and then Calk's and see which one I like better. Thanks.

Hey Frank, once you have CWM installed make sure to do a BACKUP before you go flashing other roms. Trust me that this is a very important step! Also, since you are already rooted I would advise making a backup of your apps via Titanium Backup? This is not required but useful for restoring apps when flashing ROMs. In answer to your other question, it is not necessary to use Calk's format all, but is recommended. Otherwise, just use CWM to wipe data, cache, and dalvik-cache. Then choose install zip from sd card and flash away.
Calks format all will clear all caches for you... Make sure to go thank the man

I was just in your shoes recently. I was on stock EK02 + root. Decided to use blazerROM as my choice of ROM. I didn't get the OTA update yet, so I went ahead and ODIN the pre-rooted EL29 stock update. I just wanted to see if EL29 had any issues. I ran it for half a day and decided to stick with it. I backed up my contacts and SMS messages and Titanium backup of all my apps. I added CWM via the auto-root script from sfhub. From there, I made a nandroid back up (it saves to your external SD if you have one) and went ahead and flashed calks format all. then flashed blazer right after (stayed in the same menu). Everything is running great so far with no major issues. Once everything was running properly, I just restored my user apps (not system!) via titanium backup, my SMS messages, and contact list.
I also did the same steps for my wife's phone, but put calks rom on hers.
You won't regret flashing. Better battery life, more features, bloatware removed, ect. I don't think i'll be on stock anymore since we get the updates here on XDA faster than sprint pushes them out anyway.

Thanks. I saw another one of your posts and was going to ask you to compare Blazer and Calks but I didn't want to be that guy! I'm just going to try them myself. That said, did you update your modem to EL29 before you moved to Blazer? I'm thinking of keeping EK02 since it works well for me and I've seen others say EL29 had problems.
@jasone4gt Thanks for the reminder on the back up. I've installed CWM, done the back up. Getting ready to flash Blazer now.

Thanks everyone. Took the plunge and everything is great. Didn't update the modem. Installed CWM, did Nandroid and Titanium backups, flashed Calk's Erase All then flashed Blazer. Everything works great so far. It all looks great too. One minor thing. The signal strength indicator is grey color instead of blue like everything else. It's also blue in the screen cap in the second post. Is it supposed to be grey and do I have to flash a theme? Also, does anyone know what the screen density is? It looks a lot better than Stock.
Looking to do this as well. Can you tell me more about auto root? Completely new to the whole root and flash shindig.

It's actually pretty easy. Just follow the instructions in the first thread in development to Auto root. Do step 1, download the e4gtauto-sfx.exe file and then run that. Select A to Root then C to install CWM. I'm not sure if you need to reboot your phone between A & C but to be safe, you might want to. Download the Blazer ROM and Calk's Erase All and copy that to your phone. Then boot into CWM by holding Up volume and Power while turning the phone on. Do the Nandroid back up in CWM. Then install Calk's then Blazer. That's it. You're done. There are a bunch of videos to help if you need it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268548
It depends on what version he's on.
EL13 and up, he'll have to use the Odin package, also by sfhub. Then he would use the package you mentioned to run option C for CWM

Yup, I thought I mentioned that in my post but getting old I guess. If you're on EK02 or earlier, then you follow my instructions. If you're on EL13 or later, you have to do Odin. I don't know how to do that though since I've never done it as I was on EK02.
Ok, run into a little problem. The hotspot hack worked fine right after flashing Blazer. I then did my restore from Titanium back up. Since that, the hot spot doesn't work. It says I'm not authorized. Did I restore something that undid the hack and is there a way to fix it besides doing a reset? Also, my signal strength indicator varied between grey and blue. Is that normal? And what is AOSP email? I installed it but it doesn't look any different than the Stock email. Thanks.

Well, don't know if anyone cares but here are my thoughts on my experience. First off, I think Blazer looks a lot nicer than stock. I suppose you have to like blue. I still have no idea why but my signal strength indicator occasionally turns white. I think it's when either 4G or Wifi is on but it's minor. Sprint tethering works with both 4G and 3G. It seems like 4G disconnects every once in awhile. Sometimes it's the 4G (meaning Internet on the phone doesn't work either) and sometimes the PC hooked up loses Internet access. I mentioned in another thread, the tethering worked right after flashing but after I did a Titanium restore, it stopped working and I got an authorization error. Turns out turning off and on fixed that. I found out after reflashing that you can avoid this problem if you don't restore the data for Wifi Sharing and Wifi Sharing Manager apps. No problems with GPS (used maps and nav) or any other connectivity. Before reflashing, I tried out Madoggin's 13 homescreen from 12/4. I didn't use it long but it seemed to work fine. I just didn't like it because it installs a different theme (didn't like the notification icons) and it replaces the scrolling toggles on the status bar. In case you haven't discovered it, I found out that holding the toggles in Blazer will open up the settings page for that item, e.g. tap Wifi turns it on and off but hold Wifi and it'll open up Wifi settings. I still have no idea what AOSP email is. I installed it and it looked exactly like Stock. After reflashing, I didn't install AOSP email and it still didn't look any different. I guess the difference could be the notification because the one that comes with Blazer has a different envelope icon for new emails. Performance-wise, I haven't noticed anything really different. I thought Stock was a really smooth experience and Blazer seems no better or worse. Battery-wise, I have one data point. I have really bad signal at my office and I would lose 10% battery for every hour on Stock but with Blazer it was half that. Last thing which isn't related to Blazer per se but I had been looking forever for a music player widget. There was another post that mentioned that there is an app in the market called Galaxy S Music Widget that gives you the widget to control the default music player and it is awesome. I also tried Music Mod which I used with my old Streak. It seemed to work ok even though it says it's for Froyo only but it is a separate music player and doesn't work with the Samsung widget thingys on the lockscreen and the notification area. The upside is that it has a lot of different sized widgets. Hope that helps someone. In summary, Blazer's very cool and works great.

It seems like Mijjz's Blend ICS ROM is getting a lot of hits and could be a daily driver. I use my phone for work so I have been a little hesitant to jump on the ICS wagon until reading more. After digging, I still have some questions from the folks using it now...
Is it REALLY as easy as formatting and installing from the ZIP? I'm running Blazer's ROM now..
Does Exchange work?
GPS (without needing to complete some sort of Vodoo ritual)?
Just back up your current setup. That way if you don't like it you can go back.
You can flash from gb rogue recovery(not touch recovery) to ics. Make sure you wipe everything well. (except sd card)
If you go back, make sure to use the 1 click Odin, DO NOT TRY TO FLASH YOUR GB BACKUP FROM ICS RECOVERY. ALWAYS ODIN. I usually go back to el29 to upgrade ics versions, it insures a clean install. Good luck! Gps and exchange have been working, if they don't you probably did something wrong.

I've been using Goodness since version 1. It is 100% a daily driver!
1) Yes it really is as easy as all that. I'd follow the instructions in the OP just to make sure you get it right but yeah, piece of cake.
2) Exchange works, most of the time. I know there have been a few releases where it hasn't but Mijjah is super responsive and gets it fixed extremely quickly.
3) GPS had some issues in the beginning but I've not had any issues. I got lost downtown yesterday and pulled it out, got a lock in five seconds and it got me right where I needed to be.
Long story short? Just do it! It's the best ROM out there! Team Nocturnal kicks butt and if you have questions hope on their thread and you'll get an answer super fast. Everyone there is super helpful and friendly.
Enjoy your new ROM!
GPS is either completely random or people are having alot more trouble than they should be.
FC07+ for me GPS has worked out of the box everytime.

Team-Nocturnal Blended ICS
I have been running the blend roms since fc07 every update and I am like you i use my phone everyday for work and i was worried. One night i sat and read every post in the forum for the blend ics rom and decided to do it. Fc07 was a lil buggy so i flashed back to el29 for a about a day then decided to try it again. Second go round everything worked except gps i used the work around that they tell u to use and i havent had trouble since. The only other bug was apex launcher if u tryed to dl it from the market and use it it would fc every now and again and that was on fc18. Other than those two small issues everything else has been awesome.

GPS does appear to be fixed. Battery life seems to vary depending on your phone and your setup but I myself am averaging between 10 and 12 hours. I saw a post yesterday where somebody had 24+ hours!
I'm running 2.3 right now and am wanting to flash the newest version. Can I do this from the current recovery or do I need to go back to GB? What is the best process to do this? Noob here haha

The thread for the ROM says you can do it with just the Calk wipe zip and a few other things Besides, what does Odin to el29 mean? Told you I was a noob.
Either I'm a horrible forum searcher, or the terms involved with this question are just too common to find what I'm looking for in previous posts.....
When I send a text that is over 160 characters, the recipient always sees (1 of 2) and (2 of 2) at the beginning of each message. Accordingly, I notice that when I send a longer text, the character-counter above the send button on the stock messaging app shows that there are only ~147 characters available in each piece of the message, that is, *IF* the entire text is longer than 160. So I'm wasting characters on useless notations. Any way to turn that off, so people just see the characters I'm actually sending? If possible, I'd like to stay with the stock messaging app rather than using GoSMS or other alternative options.
FYI if it helps, I'm on stock rooted EK02 (waiting for official ICS from Sprint, and in the mean-time I don't feel like having to re-root, etc, just to update the EL29 (which still nags me every day BTW))
Oh, and I've also often wondered if there is an app out there that will automatically combine texts I receive from other people that are over 160.
Thanks
I'm on stock el29 and it doesn't do that. It really isn't a hassle to update to el29 from your situation. Just use the no data one click Odin for rooted el29. You won't lose anything and you'll quickly be on the latest ota update.

Or... any easier way to get rid of the notification without installing the fotakill.zip is this: When you get the notification, click more info. It will pull up a screen that will tell you about the el29 update. While that screen is open, pull your battery to force your phone to do a hard shutdown. Startup your phone and the notification will never come back. However, if you select to check for firmware updates (or is it android updates), the notification will come back.

You can use SFHUB's EL29 One Click the no data version to jump straight to EL29 rooted without erasing programs settings or data.
You can't root EL29 like you did EK02. You have to ODIN or use ClockWorkMod to push a rooted rom on an already rooted phone. You can use one click odin to do it with or without loss of whats on the phone. Going from EK02 to EL29 is fine for keeping data. So not only is it easy to move foward, theres pretty much no hassle or reason not to. Stock rooted EK02 to stock rooted EL29 in one click.
OH and you will have to goto ICS either the same way or through the official OTA method once again loosing root. You cant root your ICS install using the old zerg exploit either. If you lose root you will be using ODIN or SFHUB's One Click ODIN to get root... just letting you know. They way you did things before, currently do not apply and may not ever in the future.
I can't say anyone who knows all this has the same reason for being on EK02. You've spent more time clicking those notifications than it would have to do this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 Remember the No Data version to not lose anything.

Perhaps you 2 can figure out what you are doing different. Odexed, deodexed, kernel, settings, governors, i/o,.... compare.
Flash only after your wipe cache and dalvik cache. My phone was laggy too until updated to MB1 from MA6. Rebooted to cwm, did a cache wipe, and dalvik cache wipe three times each, finally installed deodexed full firmware.
Then flashed optimized kernel and modem. Rebooted to find out the phone was stuck on bootanimation. Press and hold power button till.the phone reboots.
After doing all this I found the phone to be smoother, no lag at all.

Hey guys. Looking for some information or pointers here. I have been searching but not having too much luck on xda. I do not have much faith in other sites. Maybe one of you can point me in the right direction or tell me if there is even a point in doing what I am thinking. So I rooted my Sprint S3 using "Team Epics" method a few months back. Over the past weekend I flashed the Goodness ROM. My G3 is currently 4.1.1/LJ7. I am thinking about unrooting, clearing the flash count and returning to stock to update to 4.1.2/MA6 then root and flash the Goodness ROM again. So first, is there added benefit in doing all this? If so, does anyone either know of a good method of doing this or a method to update without the need of unrooting? My goal was to get Multi View support which I now have but my internet speed when downloading apps etc, when NOT on WIFI is incredibly slow now. Takes about 20-25 mins to download a 20mb app. Im hoping that this update will help. What do you guys think?
I already have Triangle Away and OTA Rootkeeper. But I am not sure if OTA rootkeeper will even work with Team Epics root method. I read that on another site over the weekend.
Much thanks guys.

Some people have reported better internet speeds on MA6/MB1. If you want to update just your baseband, just head over to Freeza's thread and you can flash the "MB1 Firmware/modem/baseband update" file. That should work to upgrade your baseband, regardless of what ROM you're on (I flashed it while on Carbon Rom, v4.2.2). No need to run back to stock unrooted.
And if you're running Goodness, it's still on v4.1.1 (LJ7), but according to Mijjah74 will be updated to 4.1.2 sometime this week (don't hold me to that, though).
Just to clarify, you can be running an LJ7 ROM but have an MB1 baseband. They don't have to match up. In fact, there are a number of people here on XDA that prefer older basebands because, for them, they provide better speeds.

Some people have reported better internet speeds on MA6/MB1. If you want to update just your baseband, just head over to Freeza's thread and you can flash the "MB1 Firmware/modem/baseband update" file.
