Received update prompt... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm running Blazer 1.2, Rogue Kernel. Stock modem (EG30).
Got the prompt to update, selected Install Now.
Phone started to countdown from 5 to restart.
Saw Galaxy S II screen (with the yellow exclamation point)
Saw an Android with a progress bar; progress bar proceeded to complete.
Then saw an Android with an exclamation point in a triangle. Phone wouldn't respond for about 15 mins.
Then I got really worried.
Pulled battery, reinserted battery - phone booted immediately into CWM (Rogue Recovery) - didn't even see Galaxy S II screen with the exclamation point.
Selected Reboot system.
Held my breath.
Phone came back to life (thank god!).
What did I do wrong? How should I properly install the update? Should I unroot?
I'm trying to get the prompt again via About phone > System updates > Update firmware. Nothing. Did I get "marked" as rooted?
Just sharing my near heart attack (lol!).

your not stock....

Before you get attacked, I'll help you. Never accept updates.
That's really all there is to it. That update would have bricked your phone. Well, soft bricked it. But regardless, still would have been bad mojo.
We have had EK02 (the update that updates your phone for LOS and 4G signal loss during phone calls) for quite some time. In fact within 24 hours of it being released the modem, kernel, and system were already separated and flashable individually. I would wait for Blazer ROM to update to kernel and system provided by the EK02 update. But the modem you can flash yourself through ODIN or Recovery.
P.S. just make sure that you are currently running modem EG30 *BEFORE* (I cannot stress that enough) *BEFORE* You flash the modem because otherwise, my friend, you will have a very expensive paperweight until one of the geniuses here figures out how to fix it. The modem provides the extra signal strength. The kernel is what provides the LOS fix I believe as the kernel has been shutting the down the radio incorrectly and not waking it up. Essentially killing it. I could be wrong but that seems to be the mmost popular theory.
The modem and kernel working in random is what's best. If blazer doesn't support both the EK02 modem and kernel I would switch to a ROM that does.

Thanks for your speedy response.
I realize that my ROM and Kernel are not stock, however I've never flashed a modem. Attached is my about phone.
What do you recommend to get back to 100% stock? There seems like there are all the same.

Ohhhh man just knowing I almost soft bricked it. Hahn.

There is also Eg30 Tar file that would put you back 100% stock no root or anything.

[Q] rooted without clockwork mod??? Help!

Ok so I got a new epic touch. 2nd day I had it I rooted it. Fine... everything seemd to be ok, however I kept getting Loss of signal circle with cross through it and would have to keep removing the battery and restarting my phone to get a signal again. It would work for an hour or so but kept getting worse. So since this is the first time I rooted a phone I didnt know what to do... I thought maybe I should go back to stock, well fine... I thought if I do a factory reset it will go back to stock. Obviously I am an idiot and didnt know that I would have to remove the root. However, I set it to do a factory reset not backing up my data, and it seemed to be stuck so I took it to a sprint store and they did a factory reset. After that they asked me if the phone was rooted and I told them yes, and they said they cant do anything with the phone until I remove the root. Anyways, I still have superuser on my phone but since the factory reset I dont see the clockworkmod on the phone. When I go into that boot screen it doesnt show I have clockworkmod. How do I get clockworkmod back on the phone. I upgraded the modem from EG30 to EG31 and so far havent had LOS yet but we will see by the end of today, if I have to reset this phone from LOS again I am gonna go nuts. So I dont have any theme on the phone, Initially I had an Iphone theme and loved it but I thought that was the cause of LOS . Obviously the reset removed it... quite frankly I hate the sprint screens, I hate bloatware, and I like to have control of my phone, is there a way I can have my company name appear on the screen when it first boots up and no sprint B.S.?
Odin is your friend.
What do u mean?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
You confused me.
You headed in a totally different direction than expected. Is this a question asking how to remove root or how to remove the Sprint splash screen?
By the way, a factory reset doesn't remove root.

You should've updated your modem to EK02 rather than EG31. You can't update to EK02 if you're not on the EG30 modem.

EK02 modem fixes Loss of Signal issues (or at least for me.)
Follow these steps to upgrade your system to 2.3.6 + Root + Clockwork.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1368180
I think there is a carrier IQ application in the market that answers your last question.
You could always flash an EK02 ROM from the Dev section if you want to completely remove it.

[Q] Phone rooted using EL13 from Rogue, question regarding the newest update

I am unable to post in dev so I will post here in hopes of some sort of point in the correct direction.
I've used heimdall in the past to flash zImage files but this time I followed the youtube guide located here main thread found here
So, phone is all good to go. Notice the kernel is great. Then the E4GT pops up with a screen that says to update and would I like to install now. Out of my curiosity I decided to see what would happen if I tried and not surprisingly the install does not finish and the little android with a triangle above him appears.
I understand why but here is my question:
Q? Will there be an update of the EL13 kernel to include the newest update to the E4GT android version? (not talking about ICS). The pop up is getting quite annoying and, for some reason, is making my phone run hot and draining the battery by just having a pop up.
What rom are you on? I see you are on the el13 kernel but are you on a eg30 rom? You need to flash an ek02 from or el13. It doesn't matter about the kernel. The update that keeps popping up is for ek02. That is the latest update. El13 and el26 are just leaks so far.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Ah, I see. I have more work to do. Thanks!
Your phone is getting hot, not because of the notification popup itself, but because it downloads the 50mb update file every few days, before it puts up the notification.
There is a thread on disabling the updates.

[Q] Random Reboots

Hello,
I am new to this forum, so If this is the wrong place I do apologize.
Ive recently purchased a new ET4G and decided to root it. I had another one rooted with no problems. Ive been using a couple different roms and this random reboot has became more frequent and has followed me with each ROM.
I have tried to ODIN back to a stock ICS build with Root and then flashing ROMS over again. I still received the same problem.
I am currently using FD26 stock with the addition of root. When the reboots happen. It seems to drain my battery drastically.
Example:This morning at 50% phone reboots and I am at 9% when it comes back on. After a couple reboots it becomes stuck and only a battery pull will allow it to reboot once again.
Anytime I flash a ROM I always follow the recommended flashing method. I do all the appropriate wipes. Id usually think It was the kernel, but even after trying different kernels the issue still happened.
If anyone could shed some light on what could be happening. I would be very appreciative.
do you do complete wipes prior to flashing?
Yes, I do. I usually wipe Davlik and then will run Caulkins format all zip before I flash any Rom. I always odin back to EL26 w/ CWM to flash through to avoid any conflicts with that.
I have no idea what to try next. I've went back to stock a couple times.
This same thing was happening to me honestly about 10 reboots a day and sometimes it would drain me down about 50% battery. I odined back to stock gingerbread using sfhubs latest method, reinstalled clockwork mod and have not had one reboot since. I think I may have heard though that the fd26 build has reboot issues so I would look into that as well. Though I see that you have tried what I have said not sure if you used sfhubs method or not but if so I would just take it back to sprint.
Have you tried flashing this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
I would flash the full restore and if it keeps rebooting unroot and return to Sprint for repair. In the meantime make sure you are not using a cheapo charger and even charge via usb only if its not too much trouble.

Seriously, if you're having problems, to narrow it down you should not be on a leaked Android OS that is still in the testing stages. Always odin back to stock rooted to troubleshoot any issues, report back and we can get go from there.
Edit: If you need help getting back to stock rooted, please ask for help too.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I didn't try flashing the EL29 Restore, But I did try the EG30 and just OTA updated to EL29. It still didn't fix the reboot issue. Even when the phone wasn't rooted, it still would still power cycle. I just went ahead and restored it again and took it to sprint.
It happened about 10times while waiting to talk to a rep in the store. They didn't have a problem setting me up with a replacement. For now I will just use my old 3D. Thanks for the help though everyone.
I'm still stock EL29 till ICS comes out, but I get a reboot every couple days. It actually happened last night about 2AM and woke me up when the Sprint sound came on. Thought maybe there was some update (ICS?) that had caused it, but i didn't see any reason for it. It wasn't charging at the time and the battery was pretty full... Was hoping ICS update was going to fix this, but it doesn't sound promising.

On a previous phone (Samsung Moment) I had that issue and it turned out to be a bad battery. They let me borrow a battery in the store and it went away.
Reboots are ICS related.

got reboots in GB as well so I don't think its solely ICS related... IMO
Yeah... I still was hitting the problem while on Complete stock GB. The phone could have honestly had the problem prior to rooting and flashing. I didn't keep it stock long enough to know for sure haha
Probably not related, but I was having reboot problems due issues with App2SD, so i figure it is worth mentioning just in case...
Issue 25563: OS keeps rebooting when lots of apps are moved to SDcard! HUGE BUG IN ANDROID OS 2.3.5 (and higher)!

[Q] Stuck in an unual bootloop... Help Please!!!

I cannot get passed the samsung galaxy s2 screen. When i go to recovery it takes forever to try to wipe cache and system and comes up with miscellaneous red text problems. I have never had this happen and have flashed roms since this phone came out. Does anyone know how to get passed this??? I even odined back to various versions of os to included EK02, EL29, EL29 ROOTED, using one clicks and regular odin. Is there anyway to get passed this problem. I looked all through the forums and still can't get the phone to boot. Please help
Were you trying out CM9/AOKP? Did you do wipe data/factory reset in an ICS kernel?
Yes... I was trying the AOKP :-( I was tired so i may have used clockworkmod to wipe while on ics kernel. I know i should have used mobile odin to change kernel, I had no problem going from ics to ics or ics to GB with AGAT's . Have a made a fatal mistake? You knew exactly which rom i was trying. I know not to do that but i may have on accident. Can i get passed this? I can only get to the samsung galaxy screen. and then it turns off and comes back on. Even with the phone off and on charge... The battery charge icon shows up frozen
Can you get to download mode?
Try to boot into download mode from a cold boot, if you can do that I would suggest using ODIN, the flashing god, to restore your phone back to a stock ROM. Preferably EL29, then if that is successful use ODIN again to flash FF11.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I can get to download mode but when i use OC it gets stuck shortly before the modem flash. I have been successful in using 1.85 with the EL29 tar but it still does the same thing. I will try ff11 to see if that works. So many red text errors in recovery. Sometimes i can wipe data sometimes i can't. I even got to a point where i actually used nandroid to restore my backup of wicked sensations ff11 (which i was success doing a few times before the brick) I will try again... with your suggestions. Thank all of you trying to help. This is very frustrating
UGH!!! Tried the FF11 one click and it still stops at the datafs portion! Just freezes. Going to wait a year to download the odin tar from slow file factory and hope that brings some progress... If anyone knows how to get past this, it would greatly be appreciated
That doesn't sound good. Sorry man. Some people have had luck pulling the battery and leaving out our for a few hours then trying the oneclick again. Sounds like you're hard bricked though.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
You're bricked my friend ... there goes another victim
There's a bug in the EMMC firmware that causes the phone to lockup when certain mmc erase operations are done. This basically causes a superbrick which can't be fixed at this time.
The best you can hope for is to map around the problem, which is some effort and you'll always feel you phone isn't complete.
I would suggest you get it replaced.
What is considered mapping around the problem? Is there any way i can return to sprint or will that be a no go seeing how i can't reset the binary counter (as far as a know) without a jig? It is really stranger because i can odin back using a tar but one click odins freeze at data img. I can even get to different recoveries and some are functional for wiping cache and data, even restoring nandroid but once i get to the galaxy s2 screen it's game over. And of course when charging the phone the battery logo is frozen

Nothing is strange about it. The area of flash the /Data partition is mapped to is corrupted at the wearlevelfs level, something that cant be fixed by JTAG. From what I have seen there are 2 levels, the blue light of death and then able to get to recovery and download. The causes are pretty well known, known by Google and some parts of Samsung before we even knew about it.
Have you tried using ODIN to go back to EL26? sometimes EL29 doesn't work when i flash back to that version.
First off, thank you ALL for your replies and attempts to help. It is very appreciated! I odin'd to pretty much every kernel and rom i could. Some got me further than others. The end result was still the same. I get to see either the frozen battery charging icon or samsung galaxy s2 logo and nothing else. I did finally find a stock unrooted EL29 md5 (since everyone is on the one clicks these days) and was able to odin back to stock unrooted with no yellow triangle in hopes that my visit to sprint doesn't bad. This sucks, i can't believe i am hard bricked yet i can odin, get to recoveries, and even flash roms as well as nandroid restore. I looked into the Jtag thing i the post before this one says that's a no go too. Hopefully someone will have a miracle fix or sprint has a heart...
Think those of us with this problem are pretty much screwed...
If this helps anyone out there who may have an answer for me... I had just clean installed AOKP-39 and had a barrage of force closes... I went back into recovery (Actually didn't try flash from ics to ics or ics to gb) to wipe data, cache, ect... and that was the end of my glorious Epic 4g touch! Don't wipe anything people... If you can manage to open mobile odin through all the bs force closes, head back home that way!!!! Still hoping someone has the all spark for my Epic

ah, so it looks like you had a bad download of AOKP or a bad flash (they happen) and in your panic forgot to Mobile Odin back and instead you reflashed AOKP from the stock recovery?
Sorry to hear about the brick. It's definitely a good lesson for newer members to read. If you have insurance, at least you'll only have to shell out $60 or so.
Yeah, i think it may have been a bad flash. I don't know what the deal was with all the force close notifications. I didn't try to flash back, i tried to do a wipe and then the trouble came. It was bad after that, so i tried to flash and it was the same situation
To those who have recently suffered a brick due to this issue I will kindly suggest still consider taking your phone to Sprint to ask for replacement. It certainly doesn't hurt to try. As a fallback contact Samsung and you can ask them to fix/replace under warranty.
And just to clarify - is there anyone before this rash of bricks that didn't or wasn't able to get their E4GT replaced? Just curious because it seemed like just about everyone was good.

AT&T SGH-I317 - terrible cell signal after flashing rom

Ok, I'm about to pull my hair out trying to fix this. About a month ago I flashed Scott's CleanROM ATT SE 1.5. Before that I was rooted, but on stock rom. I really just wanted to get all the ridiculous bloatware off my Note 2. Anyway, the flash worked fine, but afterwards my call signal descreased dramatically. It's not always terrible in certain places in my city, but I miss a lot of calls, sometimes at home it shows the circle with a line through it, showing no service at all. Many times, I will have 2 or 3 bars, but when I go to make the call I lose service altogther.
I reflashed the rom, flashed another rom and now am running stock rooted I317UCALK7. Nothing has changed with my call reception.
It wasn't like this before I flashed CleanRom. In doing my research I've found a few people with similar problems, but no real solution. I know that flashing a modem is worth a try, but I've not found any information that can point me to the right modem for my area. I think I'm using the same modem that came stock on my phone and worked in the beginning.
Any thoughts or experience with this?

Honestly... if your objective was to get all the ATT bloatware off your Note 2, you should flash CleanROM ACE 4.6.1 This one is built off the N7105XXDMB3 International base (not the ATT base which SE 1.5 is built from). I'm on ATT network and have been running the International CleanROM since December... absolutely love it.. great performance... never an issue. During install on 4.6.1, just select ATT as your carrier and select the ATT signal icons (if those are the ones you wish to utilize). Also during install, you can select (via Aroma installer) which Google and Samsung apps you want/ don't want to install. As far as the radio, you can flash modem separately (since it writes to it's own partition) and see which one works best for you. I am currently running the UCAMA4 ATT modem on the N7105XXDMB3 rom. Here's a link I posted regarding this modem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38056319&postcount=10
Again, if you objective is to minimize the ATT bloat, go with CleanROM ACE 4.6.1.... select ATT as your carrier... and try either the more recent MA4 ATT modem or the previous LK7 modem for signal reception. Hope this helps.

ok so now your running stock rooted, if you want to debloat search for mr robinson's debloater, its aroma installer as well as DoctorQMM has mentioned. if you are looking for modems, you have 3 options available lj2, lk7 and latest ma4. you said your phone is running lk7? if you have a custom recovery what im going to ask you will not matter. have you checked for system updates or tried flashing stock rooted deodexed ma4? i would try lj2 modem and see if my signal cleans up, since you mentioned it was fine before SE 1.5.

Well, I have flashed all three modems without any change. Seems very strange. Don't really know what to do.
I would Odin flash back to 100% stock...use triangle away from the market to your phone. .and not allow it to update via the ota update that will be pushed to your phone when you do.
See if this corrects the issue. If it doesn't. .take your phone in for service.
If it does fix it...re-root...download twrp...make a nand backup of your stock/rooted phone and save it to your external sd card.
Then you can go about de-bloating your phone.
Personally. ..I think you have had a bad download of cleanrom to start..and possibly a bad sim card afterwards.
It happens from time to time. .but by flashing back to stock. .resetting your counter to normal. .you can at least return your phone if necessary.

Thanks Mac, that's kind of what I was thinking. As I search these forums and the internet, it's difficult to pin down a source for my original stock rom. I was a newb at the beginning of this, so no, I did not make a backup of my original rom. If it wouldn't take too much time, would anyone be able to point me to a stock rom for my particular phone?

Ugh. Ok, so I got as far as using Odin, passing, but then got stuck on boot at the Samsung logo. Everything I read said to reboot into stock recovery, but I can't seem to do that. When I'm stuck, the only way I know of turning off the phone is to take the battery out. I put it back in and quickly press volume-up, home, and power. But it simply boots back to the Samsung logo and stays there with the logo pulsing.

Alright, I know I am on the home stretch, just one more hurdle. So, I have been working on getting the damn custom binary counter reset since last night. Right now the downloading screen lists, "Custom Binary Download: Yes (1 counts) Current Binary: Samsung Official System Status: Official"
I ran Triangle Away before I unrooted, multiple times in fact, I just can't ever get the counter to go to 0. I read somewhere, that if I am simply taking the phone into AT&T and not sending to to Samsung, then they don't actually check the binary counter. Anyway, I'm just really tired of dealing with this.

I did a factory reset each time. I just did another one. I'm still at 1 binary count. I am unrooted right now, so I guess I need to reroot and try again?
Pull your external sd card and leave it out. ...delete super user..busy box..your custom recovery... factory reset..let phone settle then power off..
Boot it back up.. and go through the first time set up..Don't Update It... see what it says then.
Then check your signal and data.See if the issue is resolved. You might not have to take it back. ..but I would just for peace of mind.

I did it! lol
Used this (http://rootgalaxys3iii.com/how-to-reset-rooted-galaxy-note-2-flash-counter/) to finally get Triangle Away to work on my phone and then did factory reset.
They gave me a new phone and it's working great

Good..make sure you do a nand back up of your stock rooted phone before you do anything else to it..if you are going to re-root that is.
I have a seperate 16 gig external micro sd card..that all it has on it is that..my music and my movies..It's worth the peace of mind and very conveniant having it backed up and saved off my phone on it's own disc..
Good Luck

I ended up having to take my phone back to AT&T and get a new one. It seems that this is a problem with a certain batch of Note 2's. When I went in for repair, a girl came in with the exact problem with her Note 2. Anyway, they gave me a new phone and it has been fine ever since.
