Just read this:
http://www.patentlyapple.com/patent...sence-detection-security-for-ios-devices.html
Fruit Company applied the patent last August 2010, long before ICS was released.
What would happen if this patent granted?
Note that prior art won't save Google, because the change to first to patent :
http://www.iplawalert.com/2011/09/a...-introduces-firsttofile-to-the-united-states/
F*ck, I hate this patent thing especially done by this Fruit Company!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
No, Google would have to be copying it exactly the way Apple does it. Apple is talking about 3D stuff.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Chill. Just chill. Its not as serious as you think.
It would be completely ridiculous if the fruit company were awarded that patent since patents are only supposed to be awarded for the non-obvious. This kind of implementation has long been obvious since bio-metric technology has been around for over a decade. This is just one spin / flavor of that.
Patent and copyright law is killing the US... just plain stupid.
face unlock is b.s. anyway. i tried it out and found there were times when it couldn't even register my face & had me enter in the password... that and yeah, it does seem to have difficulty telling if it's actually you in front of the phone or a picture of you.

I love face unlock, but it clearly needs more refinement. I hope Google brings that soon, I'm already pretty anxious for the 4.0.3 update.

The man who created it was the one who ran PittPatt and whom Google bought. The patent was approved in 2008 and filed in 2004.
Face unlock works great for me. Just take different captures in different lighting. Unless its pitch black I haven't had it fail, wearing a hat, hoodie, or glasses.

I setup face unlock from my waistline so I don't have to unlock my phone like a dingbat every time.

Face Unlock is a pretty old thing. There was computer software doing this already many years befor we had Android or iOS Devices. It's just another weird patent of Apple.
Even the way in the Apple patent to take the ratio of eyes, nose and mouth doesn't look new to me. I mean every crappy Webcam Software is doing this to recognize the parts of the face and do those weird big nose, big eyes, alien head and such effects.

Google have commented on this. Face unlock is a fun feature, NOT for security. This is why if you add certificates to your phone, you will no longer be able to use face unlock feature.

This.
People are acting like the CIA director is going to set up his phone using face unlock then lose his phone. Some hipster will find a photo of said CIA director on his iPhone, hold it to the GNEX and cause world war III with unfettered access to highly sensitive information.
Face unlock is more of a proof of concept and a neat-o feature.
It ends there. If you need real security, this cutsie feature is not for you.

It can if too much power is applied. In this case no. It just etches the surface.

The most important part is not the amount of power (or pulse energy) but the pulse duration (you use pulsed lasers for this kind of stuff). If the pulse duration is shorter or almost as short as the heat transfer duration between the atoms/molecules, melting is not a problem any more.
The pulse is "gone" before the heat can effect the nearby matter. You will get really sharp edges.
To win this would be awesome but I've never had any problems flashing anything so "unfortunately" I can't enter the competition, on the other hand I'm fortunate to never had any devices bricked!

This is such a cool contest! I just submitted my story. Would be awesome to combine my just ordered GSM Galaxy Nexus with an XDA branded back cover!
Think you'll enjoy my short story about attempting to update my brand new Nexus One while hiding in the work bathroom and thinking I ruined the phone
Quick update for all who entered...
Just a quick update for all those who entered:
We received over a hundred contest entries, most of which were quite epic (perhaps even of the 4g variety)! Picking just 20 winners (10 GSM, 10 CDMA/LTE) was tough, so I added in 3 bonus winners who forgot to write in what type of Nexus they own, but still provided excellent stories. I will send those three an XDA-Developers T-Shirt instead.
Winners will be announced in an hour, at 11:30a Eastern time. At that point, I will shoot off PMs to the lucky few who had the most entertaining and spine-tingling stories asking for their mailing address.
Thank you to all those who participated in the contest. It's amazing how many crazy tales our mobile devices bring us!
Was looking at a thread on the Verge asking for users to submit screenshots of their Android home screens. So I thought about what iPhone users must do in comparison hoping to find some funny meme about it. Didn't see anything intentionally funny, but found a blog that made me laugh nevertheless.
http://iphone.appstorm.net/roundups/lifestyle-roundups/45-iphone-home-screens/
I mean, seriously... these people actually think they have some unique home screen set up lol. Too funny

http://www.todaysiphone.com/2012/07/judge-says-htc-phones-dont-violate-apple-patents/
HTC’s devices don’t infringe four Apple patents for the technology and three of those patents are invalid, Judge Christopher Floyd said today. In addition to the slide-to-unlock feature, today’s ruling covered Apple’s patents on tools used to scroll through photographs and change alpabets, and software allowing users to touch the screen in two spots simultaneously. While the court ruled that Apple’s photo-management patent is valid, Floyd found that HTC didn’t infringe it.“

Unfortunately, denying that something is infringing won't set a precedent (it will only have bearing for that particular device, patent, and situation/implementation), but affirming that it does will.
