My 24hr hardware impressions of the GSM vs CDMA GNex - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Comparing my brother's gsm with my cdma galaxy nexus, I've noticed a few things.
I feel like the gsm model has a slight bit higher tolerances in fit and finish. the volume button is the same as the power button snug, doesn't wiggle and firm to the touch.
The cdma one has slightly larger cutouts of the volume button so there's some play and wiggle room. This bugs me slightly as it rattles a bit when the phone vibrates.
Another thing I noticed is the touch vibrate on the on screen keyboard or even the on screen home/back/task buttons aren't as strong as the vibrate motor on the gsm. feels dampened and not as crisp. If i had to guess, feels like 50% of the amount of feel in the gsm.
Other than that. besides the slightly thicker phone .5mm ish it feels about the same in the pocket and weight. only if you hold both side by side will you notice the slightly thicker back of the cdma
anyone else have similar comments to add or share?
does your CDMA volume keys rattle? or wiggle? does your vibrate feel almost unnoticeable when you type or unlock?
thanks!

my cdma volume rocker does move but I do not notice a rattle when vibrate is active.

My phone is on vibrate 24/7. Never hear a rattle. Shouldn't assume anomalies within the manufacturing process are consistent with every device. If it bugs you that much, maybe you could exchange. Although I'm not sure they will accept "wiggly volume rocker" as a defect
Edit: in response to above, mine doesn't even move.

I'm on my second cdma galaxy nexus. The first one I exchanged due to the bad signal issue, which wasn't really the case as we now all know due to these phones showing bars based on data and not 1x. Anyway, my first nexus had a loose volume rocker and had really obvious verticle banding at lower brightness levels. The replacement one I got has a solid volume rocker with no movement, and I've noticed that the screen has little to no verticle banding on low brightness levels. I'm guessing the first batch of cdma nexus phones had some fitting issues.
Beamed from my SCH-i515

I guess there are manufacturing tolerances in batches. grr
its not a big bother if it just wiggled. even the iphone 4s volume wiggled alittle. the annoying part is the rattling when the vibrate comes on.
I'll have to exchange. yes, minor.. but its a phone i have to live with for 2years.
thanks for the responses.

My volume buttons don't feel loose at all. But I do hear a rattle, I always thought it was the extended battery cover and my table or something.

I got to play with my sister in-law's LTE Nexus over the break and I actually liked that it was a bit heavier and thicker. I find the GN is a bit less comfortable in my hand compared to the NS. If there is an extended battery version for the GSM Nexus I will probably get it.

[Q] Will having a smaller screen affect my experience

hello people,
okay im thinking of buying a WP7 device but but i can't decide between Omnia 7 or LG optimus 7,
i can get either one of them in 16gb, as i can just get the omnia 7 16gb from germany change the language to english and the optimus comes in 16gb only anyway so storage isn't problem
the only difference is that the omnia is bigger and has better screen according to people, but i dont really care about having/not having an SAMOLED while the lg looks slimmer and easier to hold, and alot of people have said the back and search button on the omnia is too sensitive so im guessing that would be bad when reading or playing games
so question 1; can you stick the omina in a skinny jeans while sticking an earphone in the head phone jack or is it too big?
2: would having a 3.8inch screen on the lg affect gaming and reading books on the phone as it seems almost all smartphones are required to have a 4.0inch or bigger screens
Well i have a Mozart because of its nice "pocket-size".
But i have to admit that the Omnias screen is really nice and has a lot of advantages while browsing/reading etc, but i prefer a phone which easily fits into my pocket because i am not reading or surfing all the time.
Seriously, most of the time your phone will be in your pocket, so you have to test out, which phone you prefer
I'm posting this from an LG quantum. I believe it has the smallest screen of all wp7's. I've checked out the focus, and to be honest I don't at all think my experience is any worse. Everything comes thru clear and looking very high res. And even that would be a plus of a smaller screen, higher pixel density.
These phones are very high end, I don't think screen size will make that much of a difference.
Oh and skinny jeans? Really? 2007 called, it wants its feminine douchebag fashion back.
Omnia7 has a better form factor and of course the amazing amoled, and IMHO it does matter. What I don't like with the optimus 7 is its home key button, it looks quite cheap and I believe it doesn't wake up the screen if pressed coming from sleep. As for the omnia7 back and search buttons, its true...being quite sensitive. I have a fried who has big hands and keeps on hitting it accidentally as he uses the device for browsing. For me, I already get the hang of using it without hitting it. So it takes a little getting used to but the pros outweigh the cons that's for sure especially if you say you can get the 16GB version. I only have the 8 but I'm I still have 2 GB left after all the stuff I have.

I would go for the LG. I've had my HD7 for about a month and I hate the capacitive buttons more than I could have ever imagined hating them. I have to always be conscious of how I hold my phone because if your finger grazes the wrong part of the phone you'll get kicked out of whatever you were doing. I type way slower than I used to type on my much smaller iPhone because I need to be extra careful when I hit the space bar; if I overshoot it by a millimeter I hit the home key. I also type slower because I can't hold the phone with my optimal grip, the capacitive buttons force you to keep your hands clear of that area.
For the life of me I can't figure out why someone would prefer capacative buttons.
I would go for the LG just because it feels better built the Samsung is all plastic and feels a little cheap.
Screen size I think is negligible in this case as .2 inches isn't really a big deal. At least I don't think so.

The size difference is about .5 I believe when you are comparing thinness.
I would say that the screen difference is neglectable at best.

Omnia 7 uses metal. Probably explains why it is 20g heavier than the Focus.

Yeah actually at first I wondered why LG would make the home button on the quantum a physical button, but after reading about the sensitivity, and noticing how sensitive the back and search button on mine are, I'm glad they did. And I assume it was on purpose with this knowledge?
You can use the iPhone as a comparison, assuming you've used one. It has a 3.5" screen, and I find it's big enough for most tasks.

IMO 4" are better than 4.3" in this case HTC really has lost their way.
That said, I wish there was a Samsung device with a 4.3" (or perhaps even 4.5") screen.
i wanted to get the Samsung Omnia 7 just for the amoled screen. But 8GB of memory is too little for me so i got the HD7. The screen wasn't as bad as i expected (coming from the HD2) its really nice and colourful.
4,3? damn before i would buy that i would go for a 7" one
$10 credit card sized phone and serious touch tablet

My point wasn't that bigger was too big, but that if 3.5" isn't too small, then neither will 3.8/4" be.

The Omnia 7 has a more or less complete metal casing.
I'd get the LG Optimus 7. I compared it with the Samsung Omnia 7 in a store and I THINK THE SCREEN ON THE LG IS BETTER.
Why:
1)
Most OLED screens have a lower effective resolution than normal LCDs because they have fewer subpixels. If you compare both you will notice text on webpages etc is looking jagged on OLED displays and much smoother on normal LCDs.
Search for "pentile matrix" on google.
2)
OLED screens consume big amounts of power when the image is very bright (black text on white background like on most web pages). To reduce power the OLED is auto-reducing brightness if an image with many white areas is displayed. WTF! This would p*ss me off. At least the store units did this and changed brightness while scrolling from dark areas to bright areas on a web page.
3)
OK the black levels on OLED are better but the LG's arent that bad.
Viewing angles arent good on the LG but I dont notice this at all in daily use.
Other points:
4)
Hardware buttons instead of touch (though the buttons arent that great but they do their job).
5)
Many free LG exclusive apps available.
6)
Hacking: Integrated MFG-tool with many options like a basic registry editor without unlocking (unlock works fine btw).
I bought an Optimus 7 and its working quite well. Second on my list was the Mozart which is also very nice, but I activated the capacitive search button by mistake all the time while testing.
Optimus 7 downsides:
-Headphone out has sligtly audible background noise, even more when on an active GPRS connection
-My device creaks a bit if you press it in between your fingers with force
-Pinkish spot in center of pictures taken with camera
-Supplied headphones are a piece of **** at least compared to my Koss Porta Pro
-First unit had broken bluetooth, had to send it in for repairs, now its ok
-Ringer volume is kinda low (no secondary speaker)

[Q] Speaker Grill WHY WHY WHY!

Hey all anyone have an idea why the Note 2 has a nice big speaker but hide it behind plastic with only two small slits to let the audio out? Seems a little bit of an odd design decision.
Issue I'm having is vibration through the backcover when volume is at 70% anyone else noticed it? Not a deal break on an otherwise outstanding phone. Just a curious design decision.
I keep the vibration off so no ai havent noticed anything like that yet. But I do like how nice and loud the speaker is.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I think the OP meant that there is noticeable sound vibration through the cover at higher volumes. But yeah...It makes me wonder why Samsung decided to just have two small opening splits for the speaker. They should have just kept it open like the S3.
It still works better then the old note. Dont go as mute if you cover it with your palm. Seems they let it leak out from more places then just that 2 small slits. I can also get small vibrations but speakers usually do vibrate so i dont find it odd.

Some questions about Galaxy S III speaker quality, audio capture, touchscreen

AnyoneI'm upgrading from a Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note to a Galaxy S III. Had a few questions.
1. How does the touchscreen feel? Both the S II and Note felt sort of thin and soft. I like it harder feeling. The HTC and LG phones feel harder to me. What about the S III?
2. Speaker quality? The S II had a so-so speaker. The Note had an awesome one. Clearer and fuller than most phones.
3. Does the home button get easier to push over time? IT felt pretty stiff at the store.
4. When the S III was released a few months ago, it had bad audio capture with no bass and super sharp, on all variants. Has this changed?
Thx

1. The touchscreen feels responsive and sturdy to me. I think what you're talking about isn't really about the touchscreen as much as it is the chasis and build. HTC phones tend to feel better because they're either from a unibody design (One X, One S) or they are made of a stronger material. Samsung uses plastic so there is some flex in the device. Of course, it depends on how hard you press on the screen as well. The feeling of the touchscreen on the Note I and the SGS3 feel fairly similar to me.
2. Speaker is great and loud. Especially for a smartphone, I haven't heard the speaker of the Note in person, but compared to the SGS2, it's a definite increase in quality. But after all, it's a phone speaker, so don't expect to use it as a boom box.
3. My home button is responsive and easy to press. The model at the store might have had a defect? Or it could possibly be due to the fact that dozens of people probably played around and messed with the phone. Like I said, my home button is great and I have had no problems with it.
4. I assume you're talking about audio capture when recording video. Just shot a sample video outside my home and I didn't really notice anything wrong with the audio quality after watching it on my computer. It seems okay, the speakers tend to pick up some sound when I tilted the phone and moved around, but that's understandable. Bear in mind, I am running CM10 and not the stock TW.
Screen is smoooth and pleasant to touch, speaker sounds like a tiny speaker but can be used for music in dire situations (I've used it in a hotel), the home button is loose and cheap feeling but oh well. Sound quality for recording isn't bad but keep your expectations low. It's a phone.
Just a side note, Speaker quality is much sexier on tw then aosp roms which is the only reason why I went back to tw. Aosp based ROMs were able to increase the volume but it doesn't come close to tw level. Overall sexier than s2 no matter which one you run.

Volume button?

Anyone has a little play in their volume button, like almost feels a little loose. Just wondering if thats normal?
I've been wondering about this all day today, too. I have the same issue. Is just slightly wobbly, and every now and then when I put it down on the table it makes a very brief and slight rattle noise. Although I've read elsewhere this could be the camera autofocus system.
Otherwise, the button feels pretty good when pressed - gives a nice solid click. I wouldn't have noticed, to be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that I kept thinking the screen protector was peeling off whenever my finger brushed the button and I felt the small amount of movement the button gives.
Having checked a few of the other phones I have around the house (Galaxy S4, S4 Mini, Nexus 4, iPhone 4 - all the fours!), they all appear to have a bit of give in their volume rockers/buttons, except the Nexus 4.
My girlfriend also has a OnePlus 3 - will check hers when she gets home.
I have it too. I can move the complete button up and down just a little.
I just checked my girlfriend's OP3 and it has an identical amount of movement in it. Seems to be by design.

I have very little play vertically, like 1 mm. It's not really noticeable in day to day use.
My issue with the volume buttons is, volume down feels "clickier" than volume up. Volume up needs little more pressure to press compared to volume down and power button. The button also seems to go deeper when pressed, compared to the other two buttons. I was wondering if that's normal. I love everything about the phone, but that button kinda worries me.
Mine doesn't seem to have any movement except vertical movement of a minimal amount
my volume keys move slightly to the right and left, is this normal?
sorry for my english

Metallic noise on vibration?

I have just received my HTC 10 (great phone overall) and vibration is really strong. Not ideal but not a massive problem, however haptic feedback is really annoying. You actually hear a metallic sound when you touch the fingerprint reader/home button or when typing in the keyboard, like a mild xylophone or something similar. And if the phone is sitting on a table it's very noticeable. Again it's not a typical vibration sound, it's more of a metallic thing. I was even wondering if the sound came from the speakers lol
Is this affecting other people? I wonder if if's just my handset.

Very interesting.
I always use power saver and don't prefer vibrate anyway but just checked it out and the noise is very odd.

which is why i hate haptic feedbacks or vibrate
My Verizon variant does this as well. I describe it as kind of a hollow, metallic sound. I figured it was just due to the placement of the "vibrator(?)" within the metal frame.
I have just sent this unit back for replacement, let's see if the noise on the new one is any different.
I just read there are kernels which let you reduce the intensity of vibration (not just the duration like some keyboard apps do), this might be a workaround but you need a rooted device. If anyone gets to try this please share your results.
