Still pretty new, my history is as such...rooted, installed Juggernaut 3.7, then flashed 2.3.6 wifi calling Rom a few weeks ago WITHOUT wiping. Now ready to flash Jugg 4.1 and it requires a "wipe". So I have a few questions so I better understand this and what I'm actually deleting.
-Is anything on my SD card at risk when wiping?
-First and foremost I want to make sure I don't lose any pics from my gallery, all are stored on my sd card. Contacts and calender are via google.
-Titanium Backup - what should I be backing up off this huge list of stuff?? Just the apps that I personally installed that I want to keep, like game saves? Or is this where I would save my memos?
-CWM - the backup from here is JUST for the ROM/operating system files?? I made backups of my original stock ROM and everything before I installed Jugg 3.7. Is there any reason I would want to or need to backup my current 2.3.6 Whitehawkx rom if all these ROM's are still available for download? Again, just trying to understand WHY we're doing all of this.
-Why do I show an SD card and an External SD card? Do I not just have the ONE sd card that I put in the phone??
Thanks for your help! I don't mind just following instructions, but it drives me nuts not to understand WHY I'm doing something. Or in some cases assuming I know and screwing something up!

A full wipe means going into recovery.
wipe data/factory reset.
wipe cache.
wipe davlik.

When you open Titanium BackUp, click on Backup/Restore up on top.
Press the menu button.
Press Batch.
Press Run Backup all user apps. (do not backup system data, it might create problems when you switch/update roms)
Wait for it to finish.
(You can also backup "Wi-Fi Access Points" if you do not want to have to re-enter that info. I do not use bluetooth, but i think you could also save "Settings/Bluetooth...." and possibly "Bluetooth Pairings". They are all in Green text.)

This phone shows the 16gb internal storage as SD card and your actual sd card as the External SD card. You can place the Rom zip in either. You just need to remember which.

Restoring from the free version of Titanium. The batch operation keeps hanging up. It will install a few apps, then hang on one. Any trick?
Yeah, that occasionally happens. Do the batch restore but uncheck the app that hangs. When it is done, restore the lone app. Or restore the apps one at a time.

Thanks. There are so many steps and things to do when rooting and flashing and wiping. All the developers do a pretty good job of telling you what steps to do, but terminology gets blurred for anyone not familiar and creates a lot unnecessary posts. Like the Nandroid backup...why isn't called a CWM backup!!?? That's the program that creates it!! Once you know you KNOW. But I think a really informative Q and A would help a lot more people get comfortable rooting and flashing their phones...which I think is what all dev's want...LOTS of downloads. Not to mention these phones are SO much more enjoyable and functional with root and custom roms.

ok so here's my situation....my EVO has a loose charging port and the power button is failing so i took it to sprint and they ordered me a new one...so i figured i would just nandroid when the new phone got here after re-rooting it and i would be good...but then i got to thinking that when i downgraded my hboot version from .97 to .76 i couldnt restore my previous backup because i switched versions...and i plan to root using the unrevoked method and i would assume they would install the lastest version of CWM witch would make my backup unusable right??...
Basically i just need to know if i would be able to restore my backup from my memory card right after i root it or if i need to jump through some hoops to do it...or if i just need to flash CM7 clean and start all over, which i would rather not do...so if anyone can give me an answer it would be much appreciated and i will give said person a kiss *muah*....hahaha
thanks in advance
I'm 99% sure that this would not work...nandroids have to be from the same phone, not just same phone specs/firmware
Even if your recovery would allow you to restore the backup, I wouldn't do it. You run the risk of restoring the wimax partition from the old phone on the new one, essentially borking your wimax. I could be wrong, though.
I would backup all of your user apps + data with Titanium Backup, skip the system stuff. Make sure you've synced everything to Google. Gather the rom you like & any addons, then run unrevoked. After it's done, flashing, restoring, and setting back up shouldn't take too long.
exactly what plainjane said!
Ok I guess I get that...but would I be able to advance restore just my data after flash my rom and kernel?...so I have my apps and data in less than 5 mins?

Just be careful but this should be fine. You may be better off using an app like MyBackup *root* which is free in the market to backup your apps and app data.
I have used it to move apps from rom to rom, and a new phone would be no different.
For apps...back them up via titanium backup, and you can restore them to a new/different phone
For contacts...open your contacts/people app..while looking at your contacts, press menu and choose "export to sd". This will create a file in your sd called 00001.vcf which contains your contact list and can be restored through contacts/people on any rom
Root your new phone, flash whichever rom you want...put your old sd card into your new phone...install titanium backup and reinstall your backed-up apps. Open contacts/people... press menu, import from sd card. Profit

+1 What Vinchenzop said.
I want to play with different ROMs (i.e., Cyanogen 7.x, Kingdom and other leaked stock ROMs) but I would like to backup and restore my apps+data for use between the ROMS *AND* have my current stock ROM (yes, its rooted) imaged/ghost'd so I can clone back to it if I don't like the other ROMs (like Ghost, DriveImage, ShadowProtect does for PCs). Is this possible? If so, how?
It's built into recoveries. It's called a nandroid backup. I switch betweek MikFroyo and CyanogenMod7 by using recoveries. If you've rooted your phone you should already know how to do it
To back up your current rom:
reboot into recovery
wipe cache/dalvik (trust me, it's faster that way)
select backup
select nandroid backup (not restore)
it'll give you a list of options to select. Select all but the last 2. (which is like android.secure and your sd card. don't need backups for that)
select "perform backup".
Be patient, it takes several minutes to perform the backup. This will back up your rom as it is right now. After that reboot, use your favorite file manager, go into the nandroid folder and rename that nandroid backup to whatever you want (remember NO SPACES IN THE NAME or it WON'T WORK. Don't name it MikFroyo 4.61, name it MikFroyo_4.61, for example). Then, no matter what, you can restore to how your rom is at the very moment you saved it.
If you wanna just back up apps, get "titanium backup" from the market and back up all your apps. Then you can restore just the apps to whatever rom you flash.
Any flashaholics have nandroid backups and titanium backups.
I flash back and forth between Virus 2.1 Sense, the gingerbread w/sense leak and mikfroyo 4.61 and have nandroids for all three. Can't wait for Kingdom to be officially released (3.0 and 4g? sign me the hell up!)
Hope this helps. Us flashaholics gotta stick together.
To add to what AbsolutZeroGI stated, I would recommend, being this is your first time making backups and we don't know how your SD card is partitioned, that you select to backup your boot, data, system, android.secure, sdext and wimax. For all other backups, just use the default options. If your recovery is amon RA, the aforementioned options are clearly seen, bit I'm not sure about ClockworkMod. It's been too long since I last used it.

I don't think how the sd card is formatted matters. I formatted mine for virus 2.1 sense B3 and my mikfroyo and stock still work perfectly. It says to back up the sd card on the computer before you format and put it back after you're done.
Not saying you're wrong, but a backup with .secure and sdext takes FOREVER (like half an hour the last time I tried it, maybe longer) and it's not really necessary.

I respectfully disagree. Before making a backup, I always wipe cache & dalvik and when I had all of my apps on the sdext partition, the backup was maybe a minute longer than using the default settings. Furthermore, a few of my apps are on android, secure and the backup time is the same. At least that has been my experience....

I'd have to agree. When I backup my android secure it only takes about a minute or 2 extra than the regular settings...never a half and hours..that's just ludicrous.
Rats! I was hoping I could just dd this ***** and be done with it.
What's this .secure, android.secure and sdext business? I was picking up what y'all were putting down until y'all mentioned that stuff (I've yet to come across that stuff in my nandroid'n/rooting/ROM'n adventures so far).
Also if you backup your apps using Titanium Backup, make sure when you restore you are not restoring and system apps from a Sense Rom to an AOSP Rom or vice verse. I will throw your phone into a Bootloop more than likely and you will have to restore your backup and start all over.

When you go into recovery to create a nandroid backup using amon RA, System, Data and Boot are selected by default to be backed up. Most of the time, that is all that is required and all you have to do is initiate the backup. However, some people's device is setup a little differently and to prevent their devices from bootlooping at the rom's splash screen, they have to select sdext and/or android.secure to also be backed up when creating a nandroid backup. Both are where certain apps are sometimes stored.

There's an adb way to pull and copy the wimax image, but if you mount the phone to the pc, copy the wimax to the pc and have an extra copy.
If you're on clockwork recovery, the wimax is already in the backup. If you're on amon_ra 2.3, you'll need to make a backup of it specifically.

Hi all!!
I have been loving my phone after rooting and installing Insertcoin....
I only had a 4gb sd card and I wanted to have 8gb, so after reading instructions, I started to do a Nandroid back-up on my phone with old card inserted. I obviously did a nandroid before installing Insertcoin and it worked just fine. This time, it just keeps stopping at the data back up process.
Not sure what to do now???
Can anyone give me any help please?

do you have enough space on the sd card for a nandroid backup.
i ask because 4gb isn't that much, don't know if it's already partitioned? then if you also have other data on there (photos/music) then there simply may not be enough space to hold a nandroid backup.
try moving non-essential stuff off the card then try again.
if there's clearly loads of space left, ignore me, it's just a thought
Hey! Thanks for reply. Yes, I had thought of that and have about 250mb available after deleting and moving bits. Does that sound enough?? This is exactly why I have bought a bigger card!!

i need a lot more than 250MB, but that's because i have a stupid number of apps (should really delete some). It all depends on how many you have installed.
if you have any old nandroid backups on the sd card move them to your PC for safe keeping, can always be restored later. you can also then check how big that folder is to get an idea of how big your nandroid backup is.
so in summary, free up some more space, close to 1GB spare to be extra safe, you can always move stuff back later to your bigger card.
if it still doesnt work then we know it's not a space issue.
Oh, thanks for that. Good idea about moving old backup to PC. Will do that this afternoon and try again.
Thank You
Usually my backups are close to 900 mb when I have about 12-15 apps installed
My backups when default are typically close to 600mb. And that is after a fresh install, after restoring my apps it jumped to 1.2gb. So try to ensure you have at least 1GB on your sdcard before nandroid.
My backup is usually anywhere between 1gb and 1.4gb
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Hey all,
Well, I have fiddled about and copied bits from sd card and I have 1487mb space on my card and it is still stopping on backing up data.
This is driving me nuts!!
Any more ideas at all??
Thank you

Hello,
Yes I know that bit, and have tried but it backs up boot, recovery, system, then hangs on backing up data!!
I know it's frowned upon (can cause issues) but try using ROM Manager from the market, try it and report back what happens when you try to do a backup.

Thanks again for all your help!
I need some help upgrading my current CM 10.1 M3 ROM to the new CM 10.1 R2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217288). According to the R2 thread, the steps to upgrade are:
Using CWM:
1) BACK UP your current ROM!!!
2) Preform wipe / factory reset
3) Flash the ROM: cm-10.1-RC2-20130530-UNOFFICIAL-i927.zip (MD5 = 2e65e45bdc7539d5260062abdf6cd1cd) Mirror 1
4) Optionally flash GAPPS: gapps-jb-20130427-nonneon-tonyp.zip (MD5 = 13fc57e24ead77ec2613efd643af3800)

I'm still fairly new to flashing non-stock ROMs and using CWM, etc. My first real attempt was replacing the stock GB ROM (I'm on Rogers in Canada) to CM 10.1 M3. I have CWM on my Captivate Glide. Can someone please confirm if the following is what I should do:
1) Plug my phone into the computer and transfer using MTP the R2 and GAPPS ROMs to the internal SD card
2) Unplug the phone and shut off the phone
3) Holding the up volume key, press and hold the power key until the phone boots into the CWM
4) Use CWM to back up my current ROM*
2) Perform wipe/factory reset
3) Flash the R2 ROM
4) Flash the GAPPS ROM
If this is correct, I have a couple of follow-up questions.
*Will CWM back up my current ROM - including all apps + data - to the internal SD? If so should I clear space on my SD to allow room? I use Titanium Backup (the free version) to backup all my apps + data. Is that enough? Once I flash the upgraded ROM, how do I reinstall all my apps + data? Should I use Titanium Backup? Should I use CWM to restore apps + data? Will either CWM or Titanium Backup differentiate between system apps & data app?
I ask because I'd rather find out all the information I can before I perform the upgrade. So any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pretty sure it's down?
Up is ODIN download mode.
Not 100% but if you get a little message in the top left corner then that is recovery, and a warning message about are you sure you want to flash this is Download mode.
You want recovery.
Since you are already on CM you should actually have a reboot option for going into recovery.

I know nothing of CWM and use TWRP, anyways TWRP lets you save it to external or internal and allows you to choose what you backup (system, data, sdcard, and etc).
I honestly just use Titanium and backup my apps and data. Since I store my roms all on external I can pop it into a computer if I screw something up and fresh clean installs seem so much well fresh and clean.

CWM probably is more macro when it comes to app backup, like backing them all up in one clump, while Titanium handles apps backup individually so you only restore and backup what you want.

CWM, there's an option to backup using old method, I can't recall exactly what it says but it will backup your entire rom into a tar.gzip file. The new method uses a blobs folder takes lots of space and to me, doesnt make sense. Backup using "backup to external SD" and to restore in future, "Restore from external SD"
Everything you put there (exempt you need to hold DOWN instead of UP as the phone reboots as mentioned above) is good to go.
Backup everything with Titanium backup but know that nothing like email etc will be recoverable between roms (at least in my experience). For Call Log and SMS use "Call Log Backup and restore" and " SMS Backup and restore" I find they are faster and beat Titanium.
Backup WiFi access points in Titanium and all of your non-system apps. Make sure to hand pick your apps to restore from Ti when your room is booted.
Thanks to both of you @Neuntoter and @yohan4ws for the replies. I upgraded successfully. I used Titanium Backup but didn't really need to. I just had to backup using CWM (which, @yohan4ws you mentioned, backed up everything into a blobs folder), wipe the data, install the new ROM, and restore everything. And it booted fine. I'm definitely going to try the tar.gzip method next time though. My whole 4GB internal SD was nearly filled up with the backup!

Glad to have helped!
In the future, once you change the backup method to tar, you can use ES explorer to rename the backups that you have in the clockworkmod folder on your SDCard. don't use spaces though or it won't work.
This makes it easy to do a backup of your current working rom, then hit smsbackup, call log backup, (ti backup for whatsapp, games etc.)
I have a backup of ICS, PacRom 18 and CM10.1 all ready to go with all of my email accounts etc. all put in and labelled. So when someone has a fix or patch for a rom, I do a current backup.. restore to whatever, apply fix test etc. then i can roll back really quickly without missing a beat. for example, I wanted to make a call to my Dad on Sunday when I was driving home from the cabin .. I did a backup of my current CM10, restored ICS .. made bluetooth hands free call, rolled back to CM10.

How do you do a restore really quickly? Based on the time it took to do my backup and upgrade of CM10.1 from M3 to RC2, the prospect of switching roms from CM10.1 to ICS just to use bluetooth audio or duolingo/skype doesn't seem very appealing!

quickly is a relative term... as long as it takes to do a backup (of current jb) then restore (archived ics) then revert back to jb ...
i was on a highway cruise for 3hours when i did it last.... gotta make good with what we got, right?
First off, i'm not a noob to flashing roms, only on my SGS3. My other phone is a rooted HTC Inspire 4G running Jellytime 4.2. Ok, down to my problem. I've been on my stock rooted rom since i rooted it last year and have not attempted to play with roms until recently. So yeah, I backed up all my apps and system data before I flashed omni rom and superSU for the d2att SGS3 i747. After flashing and setting phone back up, i realized that ALL my backups were completely gone from titanium backup. It said the backups were never made What did i do wrong?? Was there a step i missed in order for my backups to transfer over to new rom on the SGS3? Is there a special way to set up titanium backup for the SGS3?? Thank god i still have my nandroid backup in rom manager. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

In Titanium press menu button and select preferences. In the next menu select default back up location. You will have a button here that says 'detect'. If they exist on your phone or SD card this will find them. Have you searched in both sdcard/ and sdcard/0/? In the future you can set the default location to External SD which will save it incase of a need to full wipe. TiBu also does have a feature to restore from Nandroid.

If I set up titanium backup w/ dropbox for my backups, will that be better than sending my backups to SD card and risk losing them again?

I have never tried the Dropbox option, but in theory it should work. If it does work, it would be better to have it off device, and you should be able to schedule it to auto backup whenever you want.
