I am getting ready to flash a rom and i am going to replace the softkeys before i do. Can I also replace the background of the soft key so i dont have to reapply after the flash.
also If i must reapply the softkey background in metamorph, will that change my actual softkey or is that just affecting the background( higlight).

You can change it before you flash the rom. Just edit the files in rom rom.zip and then flash the result. In effect you apply the mod to the zip before you flash the zip.
If I've understood your question correctly.
However, if you already have a mod applied, flashing a new rom will remove that mod for sure.

Hi all,
I have 2 questions.
1..
difference between deodexed and odexed?
2..
If my evo is already root and nand unlocked. Do I need to follow toast part 2 every time when I want to install a new rom? Please advise.
Thanks
Jeff
1:
From Berzerker @ droidforums.net found via Google:
Apk files have respective odexes that devs use to supposedly save space. Deodexing means you convert it back to a .dex file and put it back inside the apk. This allows you to easily replace files (not having to worry about odexes), but the main point was to deodex services.jar so that you can change all text to different colors (such as the clock color to white) and to deodex services.jar, you need to deodex everything.

2: No, you don't need to reroot or re-nand-unlock. Once it's done it should be done, unless the ROM is a stock/RUU ROM and removed root, or you've updated over-the-air and the update removed root, or someone screwed up their ROM and made it remove root (people will generally find out and post about the latter ASAP and it will be removed.)
Great,
so what would be the best step? update.zip then apply new rom? or I'm off?

No need to update.zip. If you've already rooted and have nand access, just copy the ROM file to your SD card in it's .zip format (leave it with it's default name so you know what one it is.)
Then turn off the phone, reboot while holding the volume button to get to the menu, then go to recovery.
I always perform a Nandroid backup, especially if you're at a "default" ROM right after root/nand. So Nandroid, then go to wipe and just move down the list wiping everything. Then go back to the first menu, select Flash Zip file from SD Card, select the ROM you want to flash, let it go, and reboot.
Edit: Oh yeah, make sure you remove that PC36IMG.zip file from the SD card before doing any of this.
Awesome!
One more questions,
What is OTA update? I think I'm supposed to update to 1.47.651.1?
and radio update for 2.05.00.06.10 WiMax update?
i found a rom/ theme that i would like to install but not sure how to do that the rom/ theme is F!n!$herR_3VO-lution.v3REMIX could some1 please take a second and tell me what to do any help would be greatly appreciated
Download files, place directly on sd card, no folders or directories. Wipe what you need, flash ROM. I might proceed into ROM to make sure its working them power down, back into recovery to flash theme just as you did Rom and should be good.
SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
Can you go into a little more detail on the theme part? after i power down i go to what? and then do what? i already flashed a rom and put my apps on it?... do i have to remove them all again? or do i just flash it somehow and bam theme is there?

Always refer to the instructions given for each theme, as they may have specific steps required, but as a rule, you flash the theme just like a rom, meaning power on while holding down the volume, go to recovery, and flash the theme file. Generally, you don't need to wipe anything before flashing a theme, and you flash a theme over a rom, you don't need to remove anything.

Yes, this is true.
Some themes are for certain ROMs, guess I assumed you had a "perfect pair" lined up.
You always want to readk and make sure, it's all a simple action in terms of flashing a Rom/Theme.
Here i have made a theme resembling Cyanogenmod Cyanbread theme using its icons and other stuffs. I did this for people who love the essence of CYAN.
What all I have done:
1. I have added DSP manager of CM which works perfectly on our galaxy ace.
2. Cyanbread.
3. Removed the SILVER colour(background) of the notification bar with which the dropping down and pushing up animation is A LOT FASTER and responsive.(For those who want it comment in this thread)
4. Added DeskClock for those who don't have it. (will change its parts to cyan soon).
How to:
1. Download the respective attached file which you require.
2. Copy it to your SD card.
3. Boot into recovery (has to be CWM or else your status bar will vanish).
4. Flash this theme CodeRom Defaultand reboot.
5. Reboot back into recovery after a successful boot (with or without errors).
6. Wipe cache partition.
7. Go into 'mounts and storage' and select 'mount /system'.
8. Go to 'install zip from sdcard'. Select 'choose zip from sdcard' and select the zip which i have provided in your respective directories.
9. Reboot.
Known bugs:
1. The slide unlock has a noticable difference in its parts.
2. The expanded menus (if you press 'more' after pressing menu button) have text black.
Note: But these two bugs are rarely a downside of this theme as all the other feature supersede these bugs. Will repair the bugs as soon as i find a debug code.
Which zip to choose:
For Coderom(any version) choose Cyanbread.zip .
For BrazilianFW (i think 2.3.4) download CyanbreadBFW.zip (CREDITS: FMAranda Thanks for the help )
Credits: CYANOGENMOD community. fla.sh who motivated me into doing this today itself.
Screenshots will be added tomorrow. But the theme is amazing.
nice. but can we have some screenies? especially of the changed notification bar. THANKS!
+1 Appreciate it!!
Thanks!!
Screens from my Ace with this theme:
Thanks alot for this great theme!

Remember i had asked you if i could edit your framework-res.apk . Well i actually did and finished the theme but had only one problem which is the slide unlock. I guess it is something to do with compiling. I know that you knnow the answer to the question, so i will be sending you the the flashable zip i have made.
Note: This theme has one problem if you enable overscroll glow. It will be orange and not blue because this was done before overscroll glow. Actually i had forgotten to change the png file LOL .
Here's the theme ported to the Brazilian FW, install using CWM.
Thanks tr.supradeep!
It might have some bugs, but it looks great! It doesn't include the DSP Manager.

I've forgotten that well, actually it's easy to fix that slide unlock thingy, and I'd change the overscroll glow with the help of UOT...
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App
So I've been cruisin' around the threads here and on rootzwiki looking to mod my newly rooted Gnex and I see most of the mods are using lingo I'm not familar with. Like systemui.apk dropping files here and there. I've used root explorer and I know how to mount r/w or whatever but I don't understand what to do and how to flash these mods. is there a tutorial somewhere?
First - an .apk file is just a compressed container that contains files just like a .zip file. In fact it is a zip file with certain Android specific folder structures, files, and "signatures".
Disclaimer - I don't mod or code on the Android platform and the following is based on my understanding of how Android works.
The SystemUI.apk is an Android system file that contains Android system ui code, layouts, and ui related content such as images and etc. What the modders have done is made changes to these code, layouts, and images to modify how the Andoid UI looks.
This SystemUI.apk file resides in a specific location on your phone. What most of the modders have done is made it easy for you and packaged this file into a zip file (which is usually what they give to you as a download) that you can flash via ClockworkMod recovery to automatically replace your stock SystemUI.apk copy with their modified copy.
If you are not familiar ClockworkMod recovery is the standard for flashing Mods, ROMs, and kernels onto your phone. Since you are rooted and want to tinker with your phone you should flash the CWM recovery to your phone if you haven't already. You can look up the many guides that show you how to do this.
To flash most of the mods you would download the .zip file to the internal storage on your phone. Then you would boot into CWM recovery (there are a couple of ways to do this - do a search) and choose the "Install zip from sdcard" and navigate to the file you downloaded. Flash the zip file and the mod should be installed for you.
Note: Many of the modders that make changes to the SystemUI.apk will have packaged this file into flashable zips. By flashing these zip files they overwrite the current SystemUI.apk on your phone. What this means is that if you flash a mod on top of another mod they will overwrite each other.
ok that clears some things up for me. I do have CWM flashed (currently sporting the touch version which is sweet by the way). So when a modder talks of the systemui.apk they are not asking for the user to do anything with the files, they are just explaing how the .zip file works? I guess I got confused because I thought that's what the modder was wanting me to do (change the Systemui.apk). I would simply flash the .zip then on reboot something crazy would happen like I'd lose my softkeys or the status bar would disappear. Thank God for Nandroid but after a while you get tired of trying to flash different mods because I have to go back and restore. I am currently running Android Revolution 2.1.2 but I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

They probably want you to change the systemui.apk and then push it to your phone. If this is not done correctly your system ui will disappear. Happened to me when I was trying to mod my softkeys.

Most modders will not ask you to modify the SystemUI.apk yourself. This requires knowledge of how to package and sign the apk so it will work with Android. Most likely if the modder gives you specific details about files in the SystemUI.apk package they are just distributing information about how the modification works.
The current rom you're on is 4.0.2. I suspect the mod you flash is only compatible with 4.0.3 (most people tinkering with their phones have flashed to 4.0.3 ROMs now) and that's what caused your issues.
You don't necessarily have to nandroid - although it is very good practice. Before you flash mods if you either know files are being flashed or use a zip utility (i highly recommend 7zip) to inspect the .zip file provided by the modder you can use Root Explorer or ADB to backup the files that will be replaced. This way it would be an easy restore if something screws up. Note that this isn't 100% bulletproof since it really depends on what the mod is and what it's changing in the Android system.

Well i guess im gonna hafta upgrade then wont I
What ho, XDA-chaps.
I have a question concerning changing the lockscreen on our phones, without the help of an external app.
I really like the AOSP slider-lockscreen over the Samsung lockscreen.
I selected the 'framework.apk' for cooking, selected the AOSP/Cyanogenmod lockscreen, flashed the file created by the kitchen, yet nothing happened; the lockscreen is the Samsung lockscreen.
Is it possible to change the lockscreen, or am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance to all help and ideas given.
No its possible i just did custom animations and status bar. Working on lockscreen next. Whatever rom u are on u need to upload the framework res the system ui and twframework res. Now i dont know if lockscreen needs all three but it should tell u on uot on right hand side when uploading the files sometimes i also found out that wiping cache and dalvik cache it wouldnt show up after rebooting phone so i would just flash it without wiping caches. Well thats what i did and it worked. Remember make a backup before flashing anything. Also remember themes change framework so if u want a theme flash it then upload your framework for the mod u want. Because lets say u make a mod flash it then flash the theme it will prolly cancel it out
Thanks, mate. I'll give it another go!

I'm running into a similar issue with trying to change the lockscreen and notification bar, but after I flash what UOT created my phone will boot up and then keep restarting. Im thinking maybe it's because I'm not adding the twframework but I'm not using TW. Where is the twframework res located at anyway?
The same place as the framework.apk, my good man.
Those two apks should be right next to one another.
Ahh Haa!! Found it!
Thanks for your help!
Zehahaha! No problem!
