no 4g after rooting - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was running SRF pre-Gingerbread, Odin back to stock, did the OTA to GB. Rooted, and tried 2 versions of Legendary and now ThunderHawk 3.3. Tried several different kernals, But can't get 4g to connect in good 4g areas. Modem shows EI22.
What is my next move?

If you did a full system restore there was probably bad wimax data in there somewhere. I fixed this by Odining back to EC05, made sure it worked, rooted and flashed, made sure it worked then restore data from Nandroid broke it so did it again and restored only apps from Titanium.

[Q] 4G Not Working

I have An Epic 4G. I am running VIPERrom [SynErgY] EXT4-RFS Dual EB13 5.0 w/Genocide_1.0_EC05_1.4GHzOC_UV_VS7_VC_Kernel. I have followed instuctions to the letter and can not get my 4G to work does anyone have a clue of what to do to resolve this issue.
I did not have a problem when I was running that exact setup. Did you try and restore a backup to confirm its working with previous ROM and the network isn't being serviced or something?

No, I meant wipe data/system, cache, and dalvik 3x. Then re-flash the ROM. Also, did you make a nandroid backup of your last setup to confirm its actually a ROM issue. I haven't heard of this happening to anyone. I use Urban Fury "fully loaded" and Viper SynErgY on the EC05 modem with Genocide 1.1 kernel and Vision Kernel

Yeah JC is right this isn't an issue you would find in the rom its either an issue with the flash or the download. I've gotten where I dl my roms off the phone and flash right away from there. Cuts down the moving parts imo. I've had random things not work before with roms I've tried and it was always caused by a bad dl. Just to ask a clarifying question, are you saying you can't turn on 4g from the notification dropdown or with 4g successfully enabled you have no signal where you normally have signal?

[Q] Help! Can't flash anything!

I searched but couldn't find this particular problem; any help would be greatly appreciated.
Over the last few days I've downloaded midnight 5.5 and the new Urban fury (each three times; 2 times from different computers and once from the phone) and everything I flash just hangs at the Samsung boot screen. I've odin'ed back to EC05 and tried, always wiped everything 3x....nothing is working.
I can restore a previous backup just fine but that's all that works. I'm on the EC05 modem but also tried with the EF02 and EF10 (?)...the update from 02 anyway. I'm using the purple nurple for recovery.
Any ideas because I'm fresh out. Thanks!

Did you odin to stock EC05 or just the modem?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I guess that part wasn't clear; I odin'ed the whole ROM and it switched me back to the EC05 modem in the process.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Aren't those EXT4 ROMs? You need to run the EXT4 conversion script first. CWM 3.1.0.1 does not convert for you like the older clockworks.
That's a good point. I'm not sure how that works but before the odin ordeal I was on EXT4 and tried wiping and flashing. After odin'ing I suppose it would switch back to RFS but how then does that handle my CWM restore as it was EXT4 when it was backed up? Does the restore change the file system as well?

Just to cover all of my bases I downloaded and flashed the RFS2EXT4.ZIP. I assume that it worked, at least it backed up and flashed to "complete" but after wiping and attempting to flash Midnight again it is still hanging at the Samsung screen..

Restore your system to a working condition with no FCs, run the RFS2EXT4, don't wipe, flash Midnight. The problem with restoring a nand from EXT4 onto an RFS is the new CWM restores the kernel as well which would be EXT4 only. So anytime you need to restore from a Nand, choose advanced restore and restore data.
I tried re-flashing after getting back to a stable backup but still had no luck. I then downloaded Frankenstein ECO5OCE directly to the phone, wiped 3x and flashed it and it booted up with no problems. I'm still not sure what the problem was with the other two. It's hard to believe that all 6 were bad downloads. I think you're probably on to something with the file system train of thought.
Either way, I'll give this ROM a try for a while. Thanks for all your help.
per the 5.5 thread - Bonsai recovery works best with the 5.5 Midnight fixed. CW wasn't working so great for lots of people.
Thanks for pointing out the problems others were having. I actually was able to flash Frankenstein fine and SRF 1.2 fine today. At least I know that my phone's not jacked; I'll try Midnight again shortly I'm sure. I've always had good luck with Rob's ROMs. Thanks again everyone for the help.

[Q] Can you CWM backup SRF1.2, flash EG22, then CWM restore SRF1.2 without any issue?

I should know this but I haven't tried it. Can I make a backup of my current SRF1.2 ROM via CWM, flash an EG22 rom and if I decide to go back to Froyo simply restore my CWM backup of SRF1.2?
Thanks

Thanks, figured as much.
youll still have the eg22 modem, which will work, but you can odin just the ec05 or whatever modem you want back...
Well, for the most part yes. I do a ton of testing and I have gotten Google Services Framework errors on occasion when restoring a nandroid specifically after being on Gingerbread. It seems totally random though and if you aren't constantly changing setups like I am, you may not have this happen to you

I always have 2-3 nandroid backups to switch between different roms etc. Been back and forth between EC05 based roms and EG22 w/plus kernel like 4-5 times this week alone, and no issues.

I keep 3 or 4 nandroid backups myself. Perhaps its due to the absurd amount of testing I do that it catches up to me (sometimes 4 to 5 times changing setups in a day) that it catches up to me. Its not likely but it is a possibility.

Hey John, with all the switching around and flashing, what method are you using for restoring apps and data? cwm advance nandroid restore or titanium backup or both?
I've been on srf exclusively but with all the cool new gb roms I'm itchin to play around. Also what is your current favorite new rom?

I never restore data from one ROM on to a different ROM. I always do a clean install of apps and such. What I do is flash a ROM, get all of my apps added, set it up exactly how I want it then make my nandroid. Now, when I do restore data I do it through CWM Recovery Advanced/Restore Data Only. I do that (for example) if I install SRF 1.2 fresh then restore data from a SRF nandroid. Now people do restore data only from one ROM to another and don't have problems. I just can't test thoroughly that way because it could be app conflict causing an error. I wouldn't recommend restoring data from a Froyo ROM onto Gingerbread though. Now my Favorite ROM??? Wow that's tough. On Froyo; (in no specific order) SRF 1.2, Urban Regeneration, and ERA ReVolt. On Gingerbread its a ROM that isn't out yet...CompKid's upcoming EG22 release is going to be a big hit. They are all good though. You really have to try them and see what works best for you

Constant FC - Can't even make a call after going from eh17 back to ec05

I updated my stock-rooted ec05 to eh17 recently just to try out gingerbread, but it kept rebooting on me, so I tried last night to go back to ec05. I had downloaded the latest odin, I already had drivers installed, I even had another ec05 zip file with cwm 3.1.0.1 built in, and I had dg27.tar as an old standby. After many, many, many, many, many attempts, I finally managed to get the right combination of pit, tar, cable and usb port to get the old dg27 installed. It seemed to work ok, but seemed a bit slow. I did an upgrade to the latest ec05 using the built-in update tools. It was a 99mb download/update and it went fine. Then I re-rooted it with cwm 3.02.5 and updated to 3.1.0.1, but the actual phone part is just crap. It boots up ok, but then just FREEZES. It doesn't matter if I have the sd card installed or not, I can barely launch programs, I couldn't even make a phone call...the PHONE app fc'd on me... wtf??? the PHONE app fc'd on me... I can't even use my smartPHONE as a PHONE!!!! And I'm getting completely fed up with how slow it is and how it fc's 98% of the time and takes 10x's longer to do anything even when it does work. Thing is, my internet connection is only 512kb/s downstream...yes, that's only 512KB/s...so I can't just go around downloading .tar files everywhere trying each one until i find one that works. Plus, I knew the official gingerbread release is just around the corner, so I wanted to be back to stock for it. But I can't get this damn thing working to save my life and it's pissing me off to no end...I've wiped the cache and davlik cache so many times, it's not even funny. I don't want to just do a factory reset, because I have 18,000 txt msgs that takes an hour to restore and I have visual voicemail that I use and have tons of those saved and that requires using root access to copy the folder where the data and audio files are stored in the root in order to back it up.... so it's a pain each time I want to start over...
Anyone have any bright ideas? please???
~Mark/Zeoran
I can't think of anything to do but reload. I would back up my sdcard. Wipe everything 3x. Reformat the sdcard. Install Deca's Deodexed EH17 twice in a row without rebooting and see if that works for you. I have been using it with no problems. If you are set on EC05 than Odin EC05 instead. I would not go to DG27 and then up to EC05. Just go straight to EC05.
@crawrj, I'm serious man, GB is shifting the partions around some how, and not getting fixed when going back to froyo.
A lot of EH17 data is not compatible with EC05 that is why you are having so many FCs. A factory data reset is your best bet to get your stability back. Restore only data that you absolutely have to have. I had a buzzing in EG22 today from a EH17 downgrade that I couldn't find so did a reset myself today. But my phone is superfast and smooth again with no errors, so totally worth it. Restore your texts when you go to bed and will be done when you wake.

Not sure what that could be. I went from EF02 back to EC05 without any problems. I went back to Gingerbread on EG22 and have been here since.

Its random when it errors out but when it does, it can be bad to the point of having to Odin. Sometimes flashing a Froyo ROM fresh fixes it but sometimes it doesn't. I can't explain why it doesn't happen every time but I have been flashing 2 to 3 ROMs a day the past week and about 25% of the time, if I don't Odin, it can't be resolved

Yup, something was changed in that EH17. I have to redo my email accounts rather than restore the accounts and data.
I been going back and forth between GB and Froya. everytime i go up and down i use odin. if you want to make sure that your phone goes back to the manufactory settings then you need to have (Phone EFS Clear) checked. that will bring back everything to the first day you bought your phone then you can start again with whatever you want.
as far as backup up the files, first root your phone and go to 4shared.com and download (my backup pro .apk) this will allow you to backup and restore everything you have at one shot.
i hope any of that help
If you wipe everything 3x, reflash a ROM and reboot, it will usually (but not always) eliminate the problem. Then wipe everything 3x and restore a nandroid. You should be good. If it doesn't work after a clean ROM install then Odin is necessary

I ran into a similar issue, went from EH06 back to my daily driver EC05 that I had a nandroid of. wound up having to wipe everything, do the full EC05 rom install, kernel flash, and then run the restore to get it to boot. Not sure what the deal there was, but still got it working.
I recently jumped back to EC05, I just wiped 3x, flashed my ROM and then restored my APKs (never the data) brought back my call log, sms, mms, alarms and dictionary and have had no issues.
I tried, Bamboozle (EF02), Go Green (EG22), Osprey (EG22), Hawk v1 and 2 (EG22) and Vendetta (EH17)
I got tired of the rebooting in the leaks, I like being back to like 3-4 days on my ext battery with midNight 5.3
10/10 sat in GPS with 2.6m acc (using EH17 modem too)
Is Midnight EXT 4 based? I'm still on Stock EC05 RFS, but wondering if flashing the EH17 modem would be better...not all that impressed with the EC05 modem.

This +1
For me the EH17 modem has been the best I have used... but as with everything YMMV!!
I do agree that the EH17 modem is good, but the GB ROM that comes with it is broken. I got a lot of FC all over the place out of nowhere with the ROM. Since then, I've changed the ROM but kept the Modem and things are running much smoother.
GB leaks have many issues still and I think its still wrong to make them the everyday driver, in addition to that, we are not getting much benefit on having GB right now, many apps that were GB only are running perfectly fine on Froyo... My suggestion is, test the leaks if your feeling adventurous but expect issues.

Odd data issue after switching from rooted JB to ICS

I was having issues with my GPS not working so I Odin'd back to rooted ICS and fixed it using the dialer wipe option from one of the threads here. That Odin flash also flashed the LG1 modem back onto my phone. I then restored my AOKP 4.2 nandroid and everything was cool, but I noticed my data would never switch from 3G (UMTS:3) to H+ (HSPA:15) sometimes leaving me without a data connection because my area is weird about stuff like that.
After realizing is was back on LG1 modem I flashed the JK3 modem and my phone would connect to H+ again.
Just wondering if anyone else had this happen to them or know why it would happen. FYI, back on LG1 before the JB release my data was fine without any issues.

how do you go back to ics from jelly bean? I am rooted as well but want to go back to ics. Sorry for not answering the question. I'm sort of new to this.

If you want rooted stock ICS download one of the root injected Odin images from the no trip root thread. If you don't want root, then download a stock image from the stock images thread. Pretty simple, but you will have to wipe data or you will get bootloops or force closes.
