Restore original Kindle book app - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted my Kindle, and as a consequence was unableto use amazon's services, basically every time I launched the book store or the newsstand store, it sent me to a browser page, so I installed OTA rootkeeper, to temp unroot my device, but that didn't work, so I went to the Android Market, and updated the Kindle app, now it's the default downloadable Android Kindle app, rather than the one shipped with the Fire, my books are only veiwable in the app, not in the book section of the OS, anyone have any ideas?

UPDATE: I've tried reinstalling the original Kindle app. The problem now stands that when I go to the Newsstand or Books section, and click Store, in the top right, I'm redirected to the Kindle web page of Amazon's site, not the app. Extra info: When I try to launch the Kindle app from Go Launcher Ex, tapping on it doesn't do anything. It's like it's installed, but not doing anything.

Rooted 6.2.1 Stock rom... works fine... I don't use the Newstand.

Rarely use the default launcher though.. normally stick to AWD. Only use it to see books.

Go to Settings-->More-->Applications-->All Applications-->Amazon Kindle
Then press "Clear Data" and "Uninstall Updates"
See if that works for you.
If that does not work, I uploaded the original Amazon Kindle Fire Books app(v4.1.2.12) to Dropbox.

Install this and see if the Books app works again.
Thanks

Just tried that, didn't work. Got the original Kindle software back though Still redirecting to web browser every time I click stop in the top right corner :/
Thinking of restoring to factory settings?

Try re-installing the Amazon AppStore using the links provided.

If does not work then you could try a Factory Reset.

Factory reset tried, and tried reinstalling APKs, i'll put up with it. I can still buy books, just not in the nice interface. Thanks though!

Thanks for that, looks promising, but I'm new to the Aneroid.community, so what exactly are TWRP and CM7?
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk

twrp is a other bootloader which allows you to make backup/recovery and load other roms
cm7 is such a other rom - it's (we can say) an other os (allthrough it's also android) and has nothing to do with amazon
if you like to dive into, look at the KFU (kindle fire utility) in the dev section

Not to worry! Found this! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378063

I spent a few hours on this yesterday, trying to get the original Kindle reader (apk called KindleforOtter.apk) loaded on my rooted CM7 Kindle, but no luck. Here's what I tried:
- I did a diff and found all the files missing in /lib, /framework, /etc/, and others in /system directory
- dropped those files back in on CM7, set permissions to rw-r–r–
- rebooted, cleared cache and dalvik-cache
At one point, I was able to get the Kindle Reader to load, but I needed to re-register. The app was unable to read my Kindle serial number, so registration was denied.
As much as I love the CM interface, I like the stock Kindle Reader app better, plus I can sideload books via Calibre. I reflashed stock ROM this morning, going to try that again for a while.

I would really like someone to figure this out too. Books work fine in the Android Market Kindle application, but none of the Kindle Fire specific content, such as magazines, etc. I would love to figure out a way to trick Amazon into thinking I was running the Kindle Fire application.

the kindle fire reader app is so nearly integrated with the stock launcher, the amazon market and the system with its settings and certificates that i don't think that is possible.
if you could change and integrate all this stuff in cm7 you would end up in a stock os

Bookstore still redirects to browser, went to far as to contact kindle support, (device not rooted, stock, and not telling them about the root obviously) but even they couldn't help.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk

have you tried to reset the default association of the browser ?
settings - applications - look for the browser - tap and select the last option at the bottom (don't recall what it is named in english because my stock os is german)
if it does'nt help try perhaps the same for the reader app

Still nothing :/

out of ideas - only to install twrp and reflash the original system
there are some threads about this
if you want to do that ...

Are you able to use the "Amazon Kindle" app with this approach? I currently can only get to books/magazines by reverting back through the Amazon Launcher.

No, I cant.

Uninstall the Kindle App if you imported it via Google Play Store.
I had the same problem for two weeks. This solved it!

[PORT] Amazon Kindle Fire "Silk" Browser

Update: I know this thread is super old but a Fellow member got us a working link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=846993&d=1325992799 Thanks lifegap .[/I]
After many test I managed to get Silk to work on a different OS. This worked on CM7 for Kindle Fire. If you get any errors please post.
Here is the link to the spreadsheet. Please check to see if your device is supported!
Install Tutorial:
1. Download the pack here.
2. Use Root Explorer to copy the lib files to /system/lib set permissions the same as the others.
3. Install all of the .apks like you would side load.
4. Copy the com.amazon.cloud9-1.apk from /data/app to /system/app
5. Reboot and enjoy
Check out this post from theverge! Here!
Edit (7/8/2012): Removed dead download links. All installer seems to be lost forever. If anyone still has the file please PM me. There is now no more spreedsheet editing. Most devices are listed so check it out.
Edit (1/6/2012): Made and Uploaded Silk Installer. Please read the directions in a later post. This is my last post for this project but I will still support it if people have erorrs.
Edit (1/4/2012): Updated SilkPort with puneet_champ's apk. Also Please stop screwing around with the spreadsheet.
Edit (1/4/2012): Updated Silk Pack/Added new mirror. (Removed Account and Sync) and Cleaned the post.
Edit (1/4/2012) As suggested by Cobracat03 you could try OTARootKeeper to use Amazon Prime Videos. If you can login to your amazon account through the Account and Sync settings post your method here or PM me if you can't post.
this worked for me on cm7 thanks!
This worked on my ATRIX also. Interesting. I used everything but the account and sync aol because it would have replaced one of my files and I didn't want to do that.

Thanks so much for this! I've been patiently waiting for someone to do this! I tried myself but couldn't get it to work right.
Edit: I followed the instuctions, except I couldn't replace the accounts and sync, I haven't tried to manually do it via root explorer. I didn't think it worked at first, I tried to open the silk browser it FC'd on me. So I reset my kindle and it's working like a charm
It appears that the AccountAndSync.apk may be needed in order to get Prime videos working. Currently it doesn't recognize one as a prime subscriber.
The Silk Browser has the 'Accelerate Browsing' option checked (active) and greyed out (cannot deactivate).
Overall works well... Thanks!
Edit: I renamed the existing AccountAndSync.apk and added the one from the package. Still cannot find a way of adding credentials that are recognized by the VOD app. Currently it says that unit is not configured properly for playing videos when a video purchase is attempted.
Works perfectly! Thank you! Now is there any way you can port the stock rom keyboard? That would be great!
I'll look into allowing Amazon Video. Don't know about the settings in Silk.
Updated the main post with more info.
got the libs moved just fine. couldn't install any of the apk's. got a parsing problem each time. any ideas? i'm using a rooted optimus v with the bumblebee rom.
Try installing the apks in adb.
appreciate the help, but it still failed. i received the following on the terminal when trying to install the apk thru adb:

Edit2: I don't have cm7 installed so I dont know if it works but replace the following in build.prop
ro.build.fingerprint (Try this one first, if it does not work change the next one also)
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=generic/blaze/blaze:2.3.4/GINGERBREAD/6.2_user_3003020:user/release-keys
o.build.description
Code:
ro.build.description=blaze-user 2.3.4 GINGERBREAD 6.2_user_3003020 release-keys
If this doesn't work then you will have to sit tight because I am going to install cm7 on the first to fine tune this port.

I did notice however, that the KF version of the Kindle app renders books differently from the stock app. Also some books will not load at all on the Kindle App from the google market on the KF. I ported the KF Kindle app onto cm7 but I'm stuck because I cannot login into my Amazon account from cm7 (cannot register device)
For one, I could not install Accounts and Sync (anyone know how to get this installed?). Another reason I was thinking this might be failing is because Amazon expects to get a 16 digit serial number from the device during registration. My guess is the cm7 build prop does not provide this and so the registration fails. Thoughts?
I found it.

it's not actually called silk.apk, it's called com.amazon.cloud9-1.apk. move that one and you should be good to go.

Yup, but I'm on an Xperia Z3 so I can't root (not without unlocking the bootloader which has nasty side-effects). So I need a patched APK and not a Xposed/root solution.
Thanks so much!! it now end download, i cant wait for play in hearthstone on my XZ :3

Same thing is happening to me..... does anyone have a fix? I tried multiple builds that I found online but it's the same issue - infinite loading after signing in.
disk space
It seems you don't have enough disk space when loading it up. when it loads for the first time it seem to expand or download sound/grafx files. Does it passes the first progress bar or the second one?

Same issue here. I get past the first loading screen (unpacking crates with the Blizzard sign). Stays forever at the main screen with the logo glowing.
Interestingly, I can play the tutorial if I delete cache/data and don't sign in. It's only when I sign in that it freezes.
I'm gonna try and see if I can find any log files via adb. I also may attempt to move it to an external drive...I am pretty low on space (500Mb free).
were you able to get it to work on the fire stick?
I spent an hour posting a reply and it must have timed out and lost my response. Nice.
Anyway, I side load the app and am still having trouble, it says it can't connect to the play store. Do I also have to side load the play store?
I downloaded Android Studio and SDK
I open a terminal.
cd ~/Library/Android/sdk/platform-tools/
./adb connect <fire tv IP>
./adb push "/Users/<username>/Downloads/patch.738702.com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone.obb" "/sdcard/Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone/patch.738702.com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone.obb"

./adb install /Users/<username>/Downloads/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone.apk
Am I doing that right? Anything else special I need to do, permissions on those files or anything?
Thanks,

I haven't tried moving it to external. I tried installing it internally. I noticed that it required you to have free space as it uses it for cache. I will remove it and install it from zero to try to replicate the issues you are telling me about. As I had a lot of space on my internal card as I normally move them to an external hard drive. I also have it working on a Note 3, a Note 2 and a Moto G (2013 version). On mobile you can use an xposed module (app settings) and enable xlarge resolution.

I see tha tyou are manually installing it from terminal and are missing the extensions in the push commands.
adb push "/Users/<username>/Downloads/main.738702.com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone.obb" "/sdcard/Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone/main.738702.com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone.obb"

You can also use Amazon Fire TV Utility app to Sideload all the files to the download directory and then move the obb files to /sdcard/Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone/ with a file manager utility such as ES explorer or FX. Then install the apk and run it. As you install it will take some time to load and after two progress bars the game will load into the main screen.

When you say sideload to the download directory, is that specific to using that utility?
It is almost like it isn't seeing the files I copied to that obb folder as it is trying to download them from the play store.
However, from the terminal I type: ./adb shell ls -l /sdcard/Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone
-rw-rw-r-- root sdcard_rw 520425822 2014-12-17 21:09 main.738702.com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone
-rw-rw-r-- root sdcard_rw 22 2014-12-17 21:01 patch.738702.com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone
And both the files are there and should have okay permissions?
What happens is this when I try to launch it:
I can't post links, these forums are freaking annoying to post in, have to captcha every freaking post.

Ok, I got it working on my Fire TV (after installing play store), but a couple of weird items:
1) I couldn't get the obb files working when I used adb. The directory structure from adb seems a bit different. When I installed them using ES File Explorer, I could get the app to run and play through the tutorials, but when I tried to log in it would freeze at the main screen.
2) I assumed it had something to do with using a Google APK without the Play store, so I installed the Play store using the guide off AFTVNews (GRRR...can't post links yet!).
3) Hearthstone worked! Played through a match in casual (yayyy finished a 60 gold quest), a bit laggy but totally playable (you'll need a mouse obviously)
4) When I look at what hearthstone installed, adb shows the .obb files under /data/media/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone. ES File explorer shows them under /sdcard/Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone.
Anyways, it doesn't appear to be a space issue as it worked after installing google play....do you happen to have google play installed? Not going to mess with it tonight (as it's working), but I may try moving it to an external drive on the weekend. It's a bit large for the tiny amount of space a Fire TV has...

Fire stick, same error
I'm getting same thing using adbfire, installed Kodi 14 and beta 15.1 and 15.2. I've tried uninstalling and installing multiple times. When launch see Kodi screen for second but then obb not present message. Been googling a fix but nothing so far for fire stick.
Just wanted to mention I have also tried rebooting fire stick and disconnected from adbfire and still get obb not yet present please try later message.
Working
For the guys above, I downloaded Kodi from another site, it is a version 14.2 helix and works great, no more error messages

That's just where I am! I'm technologically challenged, but using online guides/software have managed to root my 1st gen Kindle Fire. Now, I can't figure out how to install the Google apps. None of the "packages" are working. Help!

tried the ones I posted in?
[How To][Root] Kindle Fire 1 update 6.3.4 [2014]
Sent from my sailfish using XDA Labs
Did that!
Thanks for your response! However, I had already run the Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.9 and gotten the message, "All our apps have been installed". No apps were visible in the app menu or discoverable through the file manager. After your replay I ran it again. Same "success" - same result.
So, I downloaded the utility again and when I attempted to unzip it I received this message:

Access is denied.

OK, I'm REALLY lost. I can't find the thread that has the files to install Google Play since the Kindle Fire Utility is broken (as I've been informed.) I'm sorry to be such a bother but here is my situation: My Kindle is apparently rooted and working. BUT, now I am unable to download previously purchased items stored in the Cloud. Seems that Amazon no longer recognizes the device. So, since I cannot download a Google Kindle app, I'm sort of hung out to dry. How might I go about finding someone local to me who could do this for me? I live in coastal Virginia.

Amazon Recovery <3e>

Hello together,
have a problem with my first gen Fire TV 2014 box.
Went on vaccacion and turned everyhting off, when i came back and turned everything back on, the Fire Tv is only booting into recovery mode.
Is there a way to fix it? the box was not modified in any way, except a sideloaded kodi.
So im wondering if its possible to somehow reinstall the full-software, on a phone it would be possible using odin for samsung for example, but is there anyway to do so on a firetv? jtag, anything?
regards
Vin
Does if give you the option to wipe cache? I have not dealt with the factory recovery, but you can always wipe the cache then reboot and see what happens. Worst case wipe Data and cache (that is like a factory reset and you will have to reinstall everything).
No its just a blank Page unfortunately with the Information to wait till it reboots (it doesnt) and in case it doesnt to pull the cable, which also doesnt help.
Would love to wipe everything regardless of the Data, but cannot figure Out how to get this Option

I'm having the same issue. Chatted with amazon and tech told me this is a know issue and there is a master ticket and my info was added to the list. Someone should contact me within 3 days. I think an update probably bricked my device. What are the odds they send me a new one? Will post update.
I tried some troubleshooting prior. Was trying to adb into it but checking router, it doesn't have an ip, wireless or wired, which is what is needed to adb into it. I also put the firmware on a usb and renamed it recovery.bin but wouldn't load. Connected it to laptop via usb to usb cable. Using a usbview windows 10 debug program, it only connects when booting and on the white logo screen. So when you get that recovery message, there is no power to usb port.
Just have to now wait for them to contact me.
any news so far?
when i called the amazon support hotline (germany), they said its no known issue and there is nothing they can do, also since the warranty is over, there wont be any solution, or replacement whatsoever, very disappointing to be honest
This is exactly the same problem i have.
My FireTV 1 just boots into the colored animated logo and doesn't go any further.
From there i can get a adb shell via a usb a-a cable. But i don't know what to do at this point.
Mine Bricked Thursday during a software update. A gen 1 box. If I could get the software reload onto a USB drive, I know it would reboot. Amazon admitted they had been getting calls all night ( I called at 10:00 PM). The rep promised me a replacement (fat chance) but didn't send me anything. I tried a USB keyboard but no go.

You could always try wiping from the shell... Cache or a factory reset, just throwing out ideas....
something like this still a possibility?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgC4iDzQ8gw
or is there a way to boot up an original amazon update via usb?
Still have a working recovery menu, so there must be something usefull to do with it, just cant select anything on the screen (see picture in previous post)

You have a different issue. We have a white logo and the 3e error. Wish I had your problem, I could recover it.
Google how-to-revert-an-amazon-fire-tv-back-to-stock-recovery-and-stock-software. Can't post urls since I'm new

Unfortunately we don't have a working recovery menu. It should have other options. Google how-to-unbrick-by-entering-recovery-mode-and-factory-reset-the-amazon-fire-tv, and you'll see the options we should have. Can't post urls, too new. They called today and scheduled someone to pick it up to have it delivered to lab for review. Was hoping they would give me the steps to access and recover it but looks like they will be doing it instead since they probably have to open it up like that youtube video you posted to access it directly. I hope they send me an updated device and just keep mine for review and testing.

First of all, thank you. The problem is my device is unrooted.
Booting into recovery gives me the same unusable Amazon system recovery <3e> screen.
It looks like my FireTV (gen1) has the newest software, which is maybe the cause of the problem:
Code:
$ cat system/build.prop | grep fireos
ro.build.version.fireos=5.2.6.0
Is there a way to root it via adb shell?
Thanks for any hints.

I could be wrong but I don't think you can root that version yet. Sorry I do see in the instructions you need to be rooted.
Sorry all. They had me ship them the firetv and gave me $85 promo credit on Amazon. Was hoping they would instruct me on how to fix it.
same for me, nobody was able to give a solution, was redirected to real technical support in the backoffice>no solutions
finally after many tries, amazon was ready to give a accommodating arrangement, they will replace my 2014 model, with the 2017 model thats going to be released end of october, despite the lack of warranty
but yes still its a disappointment to have working hardware, but broken software here, would have liked to continue using the old model
Looks like they realize it's an issue with the update that affects at least the first gen Fire TV. Good that they are doing the right thing. That's why I like and buy Amazon. Hopefully others see this post and get the same compensation.
I'm using the firetv 1 model too. I'm rooted and have blocked updates, thankfully. I really wonder if this update bricked all the aftv 1 models. I'm hoping for a prerooted @rbox image. This new software is really needed, because all software revisions before have the very serious bluetooth vulnerability that affects all operating systems (your device grants console access to any attacker in bluetooth range without your notice).
For me, the 2017 model is no option since i depend on the optical out.
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I have a Fire Tv Stick 2nd Gen (not rooted) and getting the same amazon system recovery 3e as posted by OP.
Wondering if any fix was found for the same as I do not see a resolution mentioned in this thread.

You may just unlock the stick. With twrp recovery you can fix your issue.

Is there an easier way out... The steps listed for TWRP installation seem to be a bit complex..
Tried plugging in a USB keyboard to my TV, (alt+ prt sc+ I), did not work for me..
Is there a physical button inside the AFTT to do a hard reset ?

No, there isn't any button inside
A way easier solution is to buy a new device...
