Samsung Radios are AWFUL! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I went to a Sprint store today and did some speed tests next to a Photon. I could not believe how much better speeds the Photon got compared to my ET4G! What the heck?!
Photon
4G is NOT on! Double checked that. Pretty sure if it was the 3G icon wouldn't be there...

Looks like you're in 3g and the photon is on 4G.
I get similar 3g speeds to your epic test but higher 4G than that photon.

Thought we knew this
Samsungs radios are the worst ...

Yeah umm the Photon is on 4g considering the 4G icon is turned on and looks to be actually working. Might want to go back and turn on your 4g and then do a speed test? But yeah it's a known factor that the Samsung Radios suck for CDMA......

Well it wasn't in 4G, this area doesn't have it and I checked the 4G notification it said disconnected...
@Saint, yea I heard a little about samsungs bad radios but never thought anything of it. Well I decided to check it out. Wow the difference is crazy! Makes me want a Photon for the better signal alone!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

the Photon is by far the best signal phone we carry but also the nost plane jane if you want a boring yet really good phone you might be happy but as far as dev support the TOUCH IS SUPREME !!!

I will admit the Photons radio is FAR superior but this phone IMO beats it in every other aspect ... except battery life also ... Photon has WAY better battery

It's not that the radio is awful per-se. The antenna design is about average while the Photon is above average.
With a decent signal (and assuming the tower is one of the upgraded ones) I get 2Mbps downloads, so the radio is "capable" of much higher speeds but if the antenna is not able to pull in a stronger signal, that can affect your speeds.

Hmm ok. Interesting comments. Well this is a little upsetting lol. I LOVE this phone, I just wish my signal speeds were better! Sfhub?! 2mps down?? That's insane on Sprint from my experience!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

Yeah, unfortunately in the area I'm mostly at, the backhaul is not upgraded yet. My ping times are still very good (for wireless) at 77ms, but I'm at 250-400kbps on weekdays and a more usable 400-750 on weekends. The areas I travel to are the ones that got upgraded.
In general when testing e4gt against a LG Optimus S, if the signal is 0-2 bars on the e4gt, the Optimus will have faster speeds. If I move to a location where the e4gt displays 3-4 bars, then the speed is about the same. The Optimus usually has about 5dbm better signal than e4gt.
It isn't a horrible situation antenna design, but there is room for improvement.

on sprint 3g in midland texas im pulling 1500-2100kbs down... hardly ever turn 4g on cause its only giving me 3500kbs down

I've never had an issue with Sprint 3G.
I'm in West Virginia where I wouldn't expect to get great network coverage, and I get between 1500-1800 DL and 500-700 UL speeds whenever I check.

Yes motorola does have good radios. But it is a motorola nuff said. Samsung all the way babby.

Im in Dallas, TX and on Stock ROM.
The only issues i have are over crowding or over laoding of the system.
When not a lot of people are on it i get great speeds.
But i hear they are working to fix that..

From what people have said of Samsung, they have bad CDMA radios in general while Moto has the best.
Ya I keep getting random 4g drops in my house, I usually fluctuate between 2 bars of 4g and 2 bars of 3g...

I am. Compared to the Rezound I had for a couple weeks the dBm is -100 to -140 where the Rezound was -80.
Last night it kept dropping to 3G and would not get 4G back unless I rebooted.
Speedtest was about half what it normally was with the Rezound on 4G
This morning the -dBm is over -100 but the speedtest is about to where it was normally so I don't know.
I travel for work so I'm going to give it week and see how to behaves as I move around.
I really like this phone but I need it to be a phone first and if it drops calls or the 4G is this bad it's going to be a deal breaker.
I just did another speed test at -108 dBm and it's over 20MB down. I was getting 4MB down last night and the signal was all ranging all over the place while I was staying in the same spot.
I have to imagine the VZW network was getting pounded pretty hard last night with new adopters and phones being activated. I'd say give it a few days and check back into it

I am experiencing this also coming from a Thunderbolt. Granted the Thunderbolt had flashed radio/Kernal/Rom's. Would that even matter? In this case will an updated radio provide a stronger signal or just increased reliability from being dropped? Maybe both? Idk. Anyone?
These are all in the exact same spot ranging from -100 to -140dBm
Glad I'm not the only one! The Rezound had way better connectivity and reception! Samsung sux in this dept. Ima give it a few days. Off topic here but where's the smart dialing?? I can't believe it didnt make it to ics!! Heh.

I honestly think the phone is just reading your signal wrong. TBolt had this issue also and a modem fixed it somewhat.

I drop signal at random though.
Would that cause it to drop down to 3G?
I have same signal i used to have on my rezound, i still get almost same speeds around 28 up and 18-20 down here in Minneapolis. rezound used to get 32 down and around 20 up, but i am thinking since verizon network was pounded yesterday so there will be some impact on speeds
Whatever new phone that comes out, you can always count on a bad signal thread.
I haven't noticed a difference in signal, but I do think it has better sound quality than my Droid Incredible.
Edit: I just did a speed test (3g) and it was very choppy and not great. I live across the street from a cell tower, so that is not good.
The Moto RAZR I returned yesterday to get this Samsung had much better reception.
I should have remembered that the Koreans can't engineer a good antenna. I'm very unhappy right now.

Maybe your coverage area? I am in Tampa...in a building, in my office, i get 5-6 megs down and 2-3 up...with my LTE GNex, i cant even hold a 4g signal, and when i do its 5 megs each way. Nothing earth shattering....but on top of it, that drops to 3g and stays there. The GSM, always had a connection.

I'm surprised there isn't more chatter about Sprint's LTE plans on this forum. I think the success or failure of the NV program will make or break this phone, and Sprint itself. For sure it affects my own decisions about both. The timing will be critical.
p.s. I second the recommendation about the s4gru.com site. It is must reading for anyone who cares about the Sprint rollout, and who wants to make an informed choice. There is also a deep font of knowledge there about RF stuff.

I agree 100%. The rollout of NV & LTE is the crux of Sprint as a network thus far. Def going to be a make or break time for Sprint in the next few quarters, especially with regard to timing. They need to make a significant impact, and soon.

My guess is they're upgrading towers for LTE. 3G speeds are still the same though, that is to say, beyond belief terrible. But 4G has gone nuts. I might try to find a Sprint store in the area and check to see if LTE is live yet.

Metro areas that had "sufficient" 3G coverage were automatically skipped through the first and sometimes second pass of LTE implementation.
Squeakiest wheels got the grease first, is what I've heard and read.
Incidentally, don't be too upset about this, as LTE (from personal experience) has not been all that great anyway. I've been in Chi, Miami/Ft.Laud, DC and Baltimore and only in one of those markets (frigging Baltimore of all places!!) was I getting better than 11Mbps down and better than 6Mbps up (i got 17Mbps down, 10Mbps up). Both DC and Miami/Ft.Laud were marginally slower than my home WiFi which is typically around 10Mbps down and 6Mbps up, and Chicago was absolutely pathetic all three times I've been there since Feb, coming in roughly on par with Philly-area HSPA+/4G.
Incidentally, my experience has been with this phone as well as my Note i717, both top-end devices.
Plus, remember that even a strong LTE signal (let alone a weak one, god forbid....) will drain the piss out of your battery, a heck of a lot quicker than good old fashioned HSPA+.
Just my $.02.

I've been getting some pretty bad data speeds here is a screen shot. Anyone else experiencing the same issues? All tests I had 3 to 5 bars of 3g. My Evo was never this bad in the same spot.

I dont think it is a phone problem, from the looks of it you have poor signal strength. Unless you can compare side by side with a comparable phone like an Iphone or S3,. But more or less it is a sprint problem there data speeds have been on the decline.
Yup, normal for sprint. Your pings are pretty good actually. Mine can be up to several seconds. During the day my data drops to <10kbps, like a 9600 baud modem from 1993. Enjoy Sprint.
I'm getting good signal and my Evo data speeds were never this bad. Here is another shot
This is a sprint issue
Horrible data everywhere.

sprint freakin sucks then. My evo 4g wasnt this bad. I guess i was lucky im starting to miss the data speeds on that phone now.
Mine aren't too shabby

Were you in a Wimax market with the Evo?
Yes i had wimax but never used it because of battery drain. The speeds on my old Evo were all 3g and i would always get atleast 1mb down now im barely getting .1mb down
Yes sprint data sucks..
Don't have an explanation then... 3G speeds for me have always been fairly consistent. If anything I found the Evo to be a little lackluster in this area. I wouldn't say the 3G speeds I get on my N2 are groundbreaking, but they're adequate.
I'm just waiting patiently for LTE to launch in my area.
Just like most of what they're saying in this thread...Sprints data is horrendous!
BTW...I'm also getting a Note II this coming month!

Doing the same. Get about 100kb/s at home and 1.9mb/s at work. Cant wait for LTE to roll out.

In the city I live it my data is great, when I get into Milwaukee your better off not even to try any data.
Hey OP when you click on your result in speed test what do you get? RevA, ehdrp?
Force roam it

You think speeds are bad on the note, try the iPHONE 5 on sprint lol, data wouldn't even load for me unless on wifi. Thank God the note 2 came out before my 14 days were up lmfao
THIS NOTE 2 IS SENT FROM A GALAXY WHERE SAMSUNG SPRINTS TO THE TOP, AND JELLY BEANS EAT APPLES!!!!
I saw this thread a few days ago. I went out yesterday for a drive. LTE radio on Note 2 is stronger then nexus LTE radio. Hard to go anywhere in my area and loose LTE. Regular 3g works good as well. I couldnt be happier knowing the issues with other phones connected to sprint networks. Had a Epic Touch and Nexus. Both had horrible signals.

This is stupid.. I just signed up with sprint my 14 days aren't up yet, I had better service with tmobile LG N4. I am having .64mbps down.. I'm going back to tmobile.
