It looks like all the mods I've seen are speific to certain ROMs. It's not just the version numbers (4.0.1, 4.0.2, etc.), but different ROMs built from different sources seem not to be compatible with each other as far as the mods go.
I'd like to have permanent Menu buttons and a search button in the bottom nav bar, but because of all the incompatibilities, I'm having a hard time finding the correct modded versions (I'm using P3Drod's 4.0.3 Tranquilice right now). So, I would like to be able to make my own softkey mod for whichever ROM I happen to be running. It looks like it's controlled by the SystemUI.apk file in /system/apps, and I tried decompiling it using APK Tool, making some changes to the XML files inside, and then recompiling it. But when I push it back ot the phone and reboot, the nav bar disappears altogether (along with the wallpaper), so I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong.
So, is there guide anywhere for modding SystemUI.apk to change the softkeys?
there's a few threads around here about that, use search.

Just so you don't have to search here's a guide.
Grab the SystemUI.apk from the ROM you are currently on. Using WinRAR open the SystemUI.apk and drag the "res" folder out of it (Put it on the Desktop or something). Go into the res folder, then go into Drawable-XHDPI and the 2 things you need to modding the softbuttons are the following images:
"ic_sysbar_highlight.png"
"ic_sysbar_highlight_land.png".
Edit them 2 to what color you want, put the res folder back into the systemUI.apk and flash it.
Done.
Actually that doesn't help me -- I don't want to change the graphics, I want to change the behavior actual softkeys. I want to add a search key, and make the settins keys permantnely displayed. Tere are alreday a few mods like that available, but no for all the ROMs, so I'd like to be able to do one myself.
i'm curious of this too, because theres nothing made for what i specifically want my keys to be.
i've been desperately asking for a version with menu on both sides that only shows up when needed and then back, home, recent, search. and i've gotten ignored everywhere i've requested it.
and just as you, i can't find any guide to do it myself.
+3, there are no guides available I'd like to add the search as I am on tranq v5. I have figured out other systemui mods but I cannot takle this one

Sry to interupt. So if i want to change the graphics of the ROM I am currently on, I just need to open the zip file of my ROM in winrar, extract the systemui.apk and open that in winrar, too. Then I can replace the images in the res-> drawable HDPI folder by simply dragging my icons in there using winrar. Then just close Winrar and put the whole thing on my device ( the whole rom or just the systemui.apk? )
After that all I have to do is flash it using cwm? apply update from sd card or what?
Sry that i ask for detailed steps, but i am new to costumizing android -.-

This is for changing the background highlight.
There are also files in the drawable xhdpi that corresponding to the actual symbols. Replace these and flash the rom
-So..find prefered symbols(.png files called ic_sysbar_back) there will be nine of them
-grab a rom you want to flash( can be the same rom you are on.)
-use winrar or 7zip to get into the rom and go to systemui.apk/re/drwablexhdpi
-drag and drop new symbols file in( it will replace)...if you dont believe me you can organize the file by date an there will now be 9 folders with current date.
close it up and flash the rom via your favorite way.
this is how i did it. and there is at one guide out there...I used it.
have fun

Why? This post was not essential. Did not provide any info. Just being a troll.
Why has xda gotten so hostile? Because you aren't newbs anymore? I guarantee at one point you were. Just love when people use their knowledge just to look down at people...

P3Droid said that he'll include the modded keys in Tranq v6. But I'd still like to know how I can do it myself.
as would i. i've searched and there is no guide anywhere in this forum about how to modify the soft keys.
only guides are for skinning. But if you want to make your own setup your screwed or have to figure it out on your own from scratch.

I as well would love to be able to add extra buttons to the soft key bar. I truly think this is where the Galaxy Nexus will shine.
Personally, I think that Back -- Home -- Search is the best implementation. Then long press on home for the MultiTasking/Recent menu, and long press on search for voice actions. But like the OP, I haven't found this implementation for AX10M ROM (Only AOKP) so I'm just sitting, waiting, wishing for a dev to pick it up. It doesn't seem too hard, so I don't think I'll be waiting long.. Just wish I could help in some way...

You'll have to place your original apk back. UOT isn't currently compatible with ICS. It will build a zip for you, but is based on gingerbread

I got this idea from a thread where someone was asking for a certain icon pack and I suggested to go one by one and grab the icon from each apk. I then thought to myself that this could all be automated. So here it is:
Ultimate Extractor
HOW TO USE:
1. Download icex.zip
2. Make folder C:\icex
3. Extract files from icex.zip to C:\icex
4. Put the theme in C:\icex (has to have .zip extension)
5. Make sure that the theme is the only zip file in C:\icex
6. Now you have 4 choices:
-> 6a: If you want everything (.pngs, .jpgs, .xmls) run UltimateExtractor.bat
-> 6b: If you want only icons (icon.png or ic_launcher*.png) run IconExtractor.bat
-> 6c: If you want almost every single .png run PngExtractor.bat
-> 6d: If you want to run Ultimate Extractor on .apks and not a whole zip file, run UltimateExtractorApk.bat *NEW*
Thanks to ultra spikey for his theme porter script which I based mines off of and thanks to woelv for the thread that got me to do this.

-> 6a -> 2: Hit 'u' and enter at both prompts
-> 6b: If you dont want to be prompted, run IconExtractor_NoPrompt.bat
7. All the icons will now be in folder C:\icex\icons
The reason that the non prompting one won't give you all the icons is because a lot of icons are named "icon.png" so they end up overwriting each other. Also some of the ic_launcher* icons have the same name as well (such as ic_launcher_gallery). The prompting script gives you the option to automatically rename the .pngs as they are extracted. I will try and find a way around this eventually.
I will try to find a way to get all the icons without being prompted (its a 7z thing)

nice work! now you need another tool to repack the icons. so people can extract icons from one place and repack them automatically into another. that would be perfect since people who extract the icons want to use it for another app or theme.

This would make mylife ten times easier to port themes. I have to search through the whole rom to get the png's I need. It takes around 4 hours to do. Plus some of the older roms png's have different names for them. Mostly on the Framework. Does it extract the png's from the Framework as well?
Yea it should be doing so but ill double check to make sure
EDIT: no i wasnt doing it before but i implemented it now
ok new update
have everything in separate folders now
enjoy
ALSO, for anyone who's curious .. that 'huge bug' is due to some themes having an 'app' folder while others have 'system/app' ... my script wasnt working with the 'app' folder before ... now it tests for it
EDIT: had to re up it real quick with a small fix

This program works great....Only one thing though, on the launcher folder, seems like the png's w/ the same name get over writen. Example= "delete_handle" from Res/drawable-land AND Res/drawable-port aren't two different Png's. Maybe for this apk and others with thhe same folders, you could place them in the original folders----Drawable----Drawable-land----Drawable-port, as you said it work before hand. Some other folder/Png's are missing as well...
I tryed to use UltraSpikey's theme converter and was unsucessful. I was More accurate using this method, thanks to you... It is gladly appreciated...

Alrite just a couple questions about theming and customization.
I would like to apply your red sense theme.
-Do I have to use a rom or can I just apply it on my rooted phone?
-If I have to use a rom which do you suggest so I can still use the original internet app that came with the phone?
Thx for all your help!
Sent you a PM about this actually.
Whats the trick to enable transparency? Particularly the notification pull-down. I have already modified framework-res.apk to include the transparent images, however they are not displaying transparent when applied to the phone. I read a few things about hexing, and even found a 'transparency patcher' program from droid-forums. This patcher apparently, does the hex work for you on services.jar. However, it did not do the trick. What am I missing here?
I'm running my own fully deodexed custom rom based on the 2.2 sense leak.
I'm working on Transparency as well...I contacted Xeudoxus at droidforums...hopefully he can help.
I would just like to know how to manually change my icons and or folders on my home screen and in my app drawer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
I too would like to find out how to change the "Folders" icon from the plain manila to obviously something else.

All root themes will usually only work for the rom they are made for. Sometimes there are big changes to the firmware, sometimes little... a good rule of thumb is to always make a nandroid backup if your an early adopter. So long story short:
1. yes
2. whatever rom i made the theme for... you can only use the original browser app with sense

Changing folder icons/app icons: you're gonna have to theme the rom you're using
basic ingredients in no particular order:
1. update.zip- just download one of themes and the update script in there (META-INF) or make your own if you feel like learning the syntax
2. resigning tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3175518&postcount=2
3. 7zip for extracting apks
4. Android SDK
5. Lots of time
Start extracting apks and viewing the contents of res/drawable-hdpi---where you'll find icons
Most icons are named ic_launcher_XXXX.png, some are named app_icon, others are just simply icon... you'll have to look around to find them as there is no easy way to change them. Once you find the icon you want to replace, drop your new icon (with exactly the same name) into the same directory (preferably using 7zip since you don't have to have the directory extracted to replace it) and resign the entire zip file... flash zip and win!
So how much time do you think I would need if I was to do this? Just kidding looks like a pain in the ass. However, doable. Thanks for the link to signing the zip. Thought it just might be a bit easier. Hopefully soon I can change the plain folders to a picture of my girlfriend or something.

Signal Bars
I have seemed to try everything to change the signal bar(s) colors. I have changed all of the icons to a red theme and the only way I can think thats left is that it has to be hex coded. Important fact is I am running skyraider 2.0.1. Has anyone had any luck changing these?

Just flash a theme with 5 lockscreens, most of the themes includes 5 lockscreens...
But doesn't it depend on the rom?
I mean, the unlock screens are a rom feature or a theme feature?
I would put my money on the themes. But I'm not 100% sure.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Most themes won't work without a Modified ROM. I could maybe try and extract the files from a ROM that has it and make a CWM update file. Only thing is I need to write a script to make it work and I haven't yet learnt how to do that yet.

i want to have 5 lockscreen without flash a theme, is it possible? only 5 lockscreen on a stock fw
I too would like to know this. I searched for this a while ago, but couldn't find anything.
My understanding is that the 5 lockscreens modification is theme related, but that doesn't mean that they can not be included in a ROM.
I'm a total noob when it comes to these things.
I did manage to remove the 'Swipe Glass to Unlock' message by using a hex editor on a themes framework-res apk and replacing the string with a whole bunch of spaces (hence why I think this is theme related) but anything beyond that is above me. To be honest I was surprised that even worked and it almost looked as if some of the strings visible in the hex editor were in Portuguese or something....?!?
Then again I would assume the Settings.apk would need to be modified in order to include the extra option in 'Display' settings but I have flashed a different settings apk before and got no change (apart from the icons that were changed).
I cant even figure out why I can't view xml's from an unpacked APK on my PC, yet using root explorer they are all in plain English on my phone..... so I really have no clue in the world about these lock screens, but at least I tried.
Wow... what a rant that was.
Point is, anyone who has a good knowledge on this stuff, your opinion would be appreciated.
Android apks can be classified in two forms:
-compiled and
-decompiled.
When in compiled form, xmls will be in a gibberish, so no readable text can be deciphered. Android can only read this gibberish.
If you want to edit it, you need to decompile it, this will make it readable and understandable.
Decompiling is very important so you can really modify anything. Also very important for .9 pngs, as the boundaries are distinguishable.
Hope this helped, btw im still a noob themer compared to some of the other blokes here.

Look for Stockmod Plus.
From looking around google, I found a guide on another forum that gives a few details on what files need amended, based on it, it appears that you need to amend the framework-res.apk and a few .jar files...
If my understanding is right, you don't want to flash a full theme, I understand, I'm the same, want the 5 locks but Not a full theme, even if it claims to be stock or not...
From what I have read, the files that need changed are as follows:
Framework-res.apk, framework.jar, android.policy.jar, Settings.apk, and services.jar
I guess you could download the StockMod .zip, open it with 7zip, you will find a folder called system\framework, if you Delete all the files from it except the ones mentioned above and then flash the .zip, I assume it will give you the lock screens and possibly the power button options (may need other files such as TWFramework-res.apk) with minimal theme change at all, but I don't know for sure as the Themers seem to want to keep this information to themselves so you flash their Full themes...
Otherwise the only other way is to extract the files from your phone, decomile them, edit them and re compile them etc... but a guide would be nice
Hopefully a nice Dev will come along and share some details...
so has anyone made some update.zip or something to install lockscreen without new theme????
[Guide][DDKQ8] Remove "Swipe screen to unlock" | Center lockscreen Clock | more...
No guide can explain every bit of information a beginner needs to know to achieve the wanted results. You need to make an effort and have patience to learn what you need.
This guide assumes that you have some basic knowledge like managing files on your phone, setting permissions, using command prompt on your computer. I will not explain what is ADB or Root Explorer or how to use them. google can help with that.
The steps described here are the steps i did on my computer (windows) and my rom (rooted, deodexed). i cannot promise to offer support, i'm a semi-noob myself.
standard disclaimer applies: Do it at your own risk & Backup your system before trying any of this.
What you will need:
• apk file compiler/decompiler: i will use apktool
• archive manager: winrar, 7zip
• Text editor : Notepad++ is recommended
• A way to manage files on the phone: ADB, Android Commander, Root Explorer
• an image editor (for some parts): Photoshop, Gimp, Paint.NET...
Part I. Decompiling
1. First you need to download and install apktool which allows you to decompile apk files and rebuild them. some people prefer APK Manager but i find apktool simpler to use.
Download these two files and export them to your Windows directory.
apktool-install-windows-r04-brut1.tar.bz2
apktool1.4.3.tar.bz2
2. Pull the file framework-res.apk from /system/framework/ on your phone and place it on your computer. for exemple under C:\lockscreen\
3. Now open a command prompt window and change the current directory to C:\lockscreen\ by entering the command
Code:
cd c:\lockscreen
Then decompile your apk file by entering the following command
Code:
apktool d framework-res.apk
This will create a new folder named framework-res within it are the decompiled contents of framework-res.apk
Part II. Editing files
Remove "Swipe screen to unlock"
1. Open \framework-res\res\values\strings.xml
2. Find lockscreen_unlock_guide_text
3. In that line, delete Swipe screen to unlock
Note: \res\values\strings.xml is for English language. if you're using a differnet language on your phone then you have to edit the corresponding strings.xml file in the proper values directory. for exemple if you're using French then you'll have to edit the strings.xml file under values-fr
Change the date format on the lock screen
1. Open \framework-res\res\values\strings.xml
2. Find mid_month_day_mid_wday_no_year
3. Replace E. d MMM. with the format you want.
Reference:
d numeric Day of the Month (1)
dd numeric Day of the Month (01)
EEE short Day of the week (Mon)
EEEE long Day of the week (Monday)
M numeric Month (1)
MM numeric Month (01)
MMM short Month (Jan)

Center the lockscreen clock and date
Explaining this mod step by step would take too long. All the editing is done in a single file \res\layout\zzz_keyguard_screen_clockwidget.xml
I uploaded the edited file (not compiled). All you have to do is replace you original file under framework-res\res\layout\ with this one before you compile. Advanced users can take a look at it, compare it with the original and edit it if they want/can.
I also replaced the charging icon that appears on the lockscreen. The png file is inluded with the xml file. To apply it, after you're done with Part III of this guide, open your modded apk file with winrar/7zip, browse to \res\drawable-mdpi\ then drag the png and drop it in the apk.
Part III. Creating the modded file
After we're done editing the xml files, we will recompile them and update the original apk with the modded ones.
1. Go back to that command prompt window and enter the following command to recompile the files
Code:
apktool b framework-res
(no .apk at the end)
when it's done, you will find a new folder under framework-res named build where the compiled files are placed.
2. Go to framework-res\build\apk\ copy the resources.arsc file
3. Open your original framework-res.apk file with an archive manager like winrar or 7zip (do not extratct, open with) and paste resources.arsc inside it.
4. If you used the edited zzz_keyguard_screen_clockwidget.xml file, then you have also to copy the compiled version from \buid\apk\layout\ and paste it under the same path inside your apk file.
Now your framework-res.apk is modded and ready to be installed.
5. Place the apk in your phone under /system/framework/ and set its permissions to rw-r--r--
Note: Some may prefer to copy the file to /system/ first, set the permissions and then move it to /system/framework
6. Reboot
Changing the font of the clock:
For some reason, this clock is not actual text, it does not use a font. Instead, the numbers are png files placed under /res/drawable-mdpi/
So to change the font, you will have to make new png files for each number, plus one for the column )
I uploaded the ones i made. you can take a look at them to note the dimensions and names of the files. you have to use those same names. also notice that there are two different files for the number one.
After you're done modding your framework-res.apk and just before you send it your phone, open it with winrar and browse to /res/drawable-mdpi/ then drag the png files you made and drop them inside the apk.
Flashable zips:
lockscreen_text_patch_DDKQ8.zip => remove "Swipe screen to unlock" text
LockscreenMod_Stock_DDKQ8.zip => Centered clock and mod with replaced clock font for stock DDKQ8

Hey Can u tell the way by wich i can use this lockscreen in lewa rom....
if i want to replace stock rom lockscreen, i need to replace framework-res.apk only, right?
1 Question..
Can we just replace that Swipe to unlock text to our own custom one?

how do you mean acceptable?
i can only make a flashable zip for specific roms and themes. maybe i will see what roms out there are based on DDKQ8 and make a couple of zips.
i usually prefer making guides than making falashable zips so anyone can apply the mod on it's own specific system.

the lockscreen it hard coded un the framework, maybe also some other files. i personally cnt do it. if you want to try to port it i can provide you with any files you need from stock DDKQ8

not really. not all frameworks are compatible with all roms. it probably will not work. it needs to be ported. but you can try of you want. just make a backup of your system before.

sure you can. just replace "swipe screen to unlock" with whatever you want. there might be some limitations for how much text you can fit. i didnt try it.

Something in this format: year. month day., name of the day. For today: 2012. march 12., monday
I'm on same rom as you are (stocklite v5). Would you please help me how to change the date display?

ok, i figured it out
open \res\values\strings.xml
find mid_month_day_mid_wday_no_year
in that line, change E. d MMM. into yyyy. MMMM d., EEEEE
re-build and replace resources.arsc in original apk
posibilities
is it possible to move the framework thing to another stock rom using maybe titanium back up?

not sure what "thing" you mean. but no. Titanium Backup backs up apps and settings. the lockscreen is neither an app nor a setting.

glad to help
SO...with the release of the new Sense 5 Roms for our beloved One X I'm not seeing any themes (I know it's early).
I've had a go at porting a few over by decompiling the systemui.apk, updating the images and recompling as you used to with the original sense 4+ roms but keep losing my status bar!
I'm just starting small at the moment, changing wifi icon, battery, signal etc etc but then I'm going to move onto app icons. The venom themes are epic and it would be awesome to see a few on the sense 5 ui!
Wondering if the geniuses here can shed some light, I haven't found any tutorials or help guides as of yet, hopefully this will start as a decent pool of information,

which tool are you using?
if you are using apktool, have you copied META-INF folder , from the original APK, inside the new one? ( Old signature)
after pushing it to the device, have you set permissions? (rw-r-r--)
Cache and Dalvik-cache wiped ?

ooooo didn't think about the META-INF...I'll give it a shot in the morning.
All the other steps i've done, multiple times. It's as if the systemui.apk doesn't apply during boot so maybe it is the meta file!
And I'm using apktool to decompile...recently found it better that going through the hassle of virtuous 10 suite

yep, apktool doesn't sign the apk, so you need to keep the old signature
Signing systemui.apk is not necessary. I tested many times.
To change pngs(especially patch9 pngs), just copy and paste to the apk with 7-zip if apktool get error or SystemUI FCs.
P.S. Please use the most original apk to modify if it's failed in previous build.

Not bothering with patch9s I hate those things!
For some reason everytime I push a new
SystemUI.apk to my phone, reboot, wipe cache and dalvik (for good measure) it won't apply so I lose the status bar and background etc. Essentially no system ui applies!
It's a pickle, im on ARHD at the moment so will have a go at decompiling! And try again
Funny thing is, someone made a made mod on here already for 1% battery, and even installing that doesn't work!...I'll keep tinkering

unfortunately for me is the same.
i'm trying to add a new item to settings.apk (SuperUser), i have edited all required xmls, added png, recompiled than signed, but no way to make it work.
i have also tried with zipsigner app using platform keys, but no result.. Settings won't show
Success (well a little)
Soooo....I've managed to mod the battery!
I'm going for a sort of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon 80's style eventually, but this is the first step! Now for the wifi/signal etc. etc.
So this is what I did...
Got an existing circle battery mod with the same naming convention (since I can't be bothered to rename 100 files )
Recoloured them all in photoshop and increased the pixels size to 50 x 50
Deleted the battery icons in the existing SystemUI.apk via 7zip
Added the modified battery icons to the apk
Then pushed to the phone via adb
It automatically rebooted and viola! I may run 'fixed permissions' from recovery to be safe and wipe cache/dalvik to make sure but it's looking good!

hey guys, if you are only changing icons, you don't need to decompile just swap the images by throwing the img in the .apk with ex(7zip) you only need to decompile with xml files and such and if you need a .9 img use the dot9 patcher in sdk then use this" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/74861217/draw9compiler.zip " to compile it before throwing it in the .apk. to use the compiler throw the .9 patched img into example1 then run the prog at main folder then look in done for compiled img

Yep already doing this mate, it's way easier than decompiling and recompiling.
Thanks for the input though!
Little more progress...
Managed to get all the status bar icons themed! I consider that great progress at the moment!

Almost there...
I'm pretty much there with what I want to do now, status bar sorted (don't know about the clock color yet) also went ahead and did the nav bar icons or prism icon as they call it, and change the home nav bar background to transparent to declutter it a bit.
I'll upload my systemui and prism files once I'm finished so anyone can have a go.
When the Viper team decide to throw a sense 5 rom out the tweaks are going to make everything soooooo much simpler! :good:
