Hi everyone,
I have finally got my phone from the shop that mucked it up and unlocked it myself. However, one thing that is annoying me at the moment is that as soon as I switch the screen on, the weather/time widget makes a sound dependant upon the weatrher. Could someone please tell me how to turn this off as it is really annoying me lol.
Change it in weather settings.

Hey all.
Out of nowhere this strange icon appeared, and stayed there for about 20 mins never to be seen again. I've never seen it anywhere before.
Anyone know what it is?

Could it be:
- call hold (my moneys on this)
- flight mode

Flight mode - plane mode? That dissables signal totally, and I had signal. As for the call on hold, that'd be on the left of the status bar. This was a permanent icon amongst the right side.

Let me have a stab at this...
I think it's the icon denoting your phone microphone is mute.
To test, make a call and then tap on the mute button. See if the mysterious icon appears...
To me it looks like 'Phone is bricked' ... but that would make no sense

LOL. That would be a great black icon all across the screen.

Ask the person who made the theme, might be a replacement for something else...
I have passed this thread to a few people on the VillainRom IRC channel and most seem to think its related to "call barring" or a similar feature.

How on earth would I have started that? My phone was left in my pocket. Max of 5 mins of sitting in the car before I checked and that was there.

How do I disable the vibrating alert for alarms? 7am every day I wish I could be woken by the sedate tones of my preferred alarm sound, yet instead it sounds like someone has trapped an electric toothbrush in a biscuit tin.
Stock Froyo, btw.
That's exactly how I felt about the alarm vibrator. And it's easy to miss where you can disable it. Go back to editing the alarm and scroll the screen all the way down, you'll see it at the bottom.

This morning was much more pleasant! I'd buy you a beer, but you're probably not local to me
Edit: Australia! Can't get much further away

+1 thanks to the answer here from me too! (and thanks to the new suggested topics but before posting!)
When I press the power button on my GN to turn the screen off it doesn't just go straight off like say the iPhone does, it kind of disappears down to a weird white line and then goes off. Its like the days of really old TVs where it went to a white dot when the crt turned off.
Does this happen to anyone else?

It's a feature.
That is how it supposed to be. It is an animation from Google since the Gingerbread builds
Lol, really? Each to his own I suppose. At least I know it's not a faulty display.
Thanks.

No of course it's not a faulty display
It's a really awesome little feature when turning off the device. I love it!
Haha, yeah, when I updated my Desire to CM7 I spent ages just turning it on and off to watch it. I'd be VERY sad if they removed that feature.
(I'm easily pleased)
Unfortunately I do not have this feature with my SGN.
I cannot find the option to enable it also through settings at all.
Anyone got any idea how to enable this?

I don't think u need to enable it... Its already there..... When you hit the lock button, u will see your phone do a CRT like animation.
When I turn the screen off I definitely don't have it. I used to have it on my Desire with Gingerbread (Miui XJ). I used to be able to enable it in the options but I definitely don't have it on my SGN???

That's because the SGS is running a bastardized version of Android, like all TouchWiz devices. If you were to flash CM or an AOSP-based build you would have it.

I LOL'd when I read this post, are you just trying to troll?
You might be able to turn it off if you go into display settings, or just wait until CM9 comes out, it gives you an option to turn it off in the CM Settings as well as the ability to make the animation appear when turning it on.
I highly doubt you bought a Nexus and bought the XDA premium app without knowing about this Gingerbread feature
Lol funny post. I remember when video was leaked of gingerbread and all it was was that screen off animation.
Slickest thing I ever saw lol

Lollll. This has been in Android since 2.3. Its a nerdy throwback to CRT monitors/TV's.

Will try it later when using the MHL
Thanks

Love it great idea !
is it possible to assign a shortcut button or have it as a notification for easier in app access ?
Working great so far
You could always place a widget of the app to access it quick from home launcher. If I implement permanent notification, it requires a service to be kept running -> battery problem. However if you want, then I could implement a notification toggle that let you turn on the screen without the need of putting the phone to sleep and wake it up.
Please share any other ideas if you have

The best thing I have found so far is an app called Screen Filter (turns the brightness to almost 0%). For me it works best to set a homescreen widget so you can access it when the screen is unreadable.

To any one who want me to port this app to their devices, please note that I don't have the device myself (I only have Nexus S / Moto Xoom and the HOX International). So please PM me, so I can give you instruction on how you can help me port this app.

thanks for that, its getting close but I don't have the middle option you have only the show all or show none, how did you get the middle one? Ideally what I want and I have it on my One max was when I get a sms that it get the little notification in the top left corner of the screen but I don't have the message contents viewable on the lock screen. any idea how to turn that bit off?
Sorry bro. I don't have m9 yet. Just wanted to see if I could point you in the right direction. I'm still saving money to buy that beauty and retire my m7. Hope you figure it out.

I'm not seeing an option either. You can turn off the pop up message but that seems to be it.

Guys, I think you must have a lock option (pattern/pin) in order to have the "middle" option to hide sensitive content

yeah I noticed that last night. little bit strange as you have been able to have the preview turned off with a pin/pattern just having a lock screen
why must things that work get changed lol
