Hello all!!
First let me say this Board is AMAZING!!!!.. This is my first post though ever so be nice! lol
I am running EC05 with ACS ICS v3, have not updated to 5.5 but thinking about it.
It seems for some reason my android system in my battery use is always at 80% no matter what.. I think that is causing some unexpected battery drain... My friend has same phone, but running acs 5.5 and his is about 35% everyday all day..
Anyone have any idea as to why its up that high and anything I can do to tone it down?
Thanks!
May I ask first, why your on froyo? The ginberbread ROMs have come a long way. Better battery life and stable.

The way Android system is reported is different in Froyo than in Gingerbread. Compare apples to apples. Move to ACS 5.5 also and compare.

Actually, I think ACS ICS v3 (all versions for that matter) is a EI22 based ROM. Also, on Froyo, the majority of the battery went to the display (incorrectly), so I think he is on an EI22 ROM, maybe using the EC05 modem? As for battery life, all the usual questions, poor service area? Wifi left on without being connected? What is the awake time? What is waking the phone up?
Good luck!
Edit: I say EI22 which is the official GB, but should be true for any GB ROM.

Ah, just saw the EC05 part.

Grab better battery stats and see what process and wakelocks are highest.
Make sure visual voicemail and gtalk (if you have them) are not running in the background. Also, go to settings>accounts>your syncd accounts and uncheck everything, then recheck only the things you cannot live without.
It also depends on how you use your phone. All apps have to use Android System like all.programs use Windows on a computer. If you use a lot of apps then your percentage would be higher than your buddy who only uses it for a few calls and texts. At the end of the day with 3-4 hours of serious use I have 66% Android system. So compare your usage with him.

Yes I actually did have it on EI22 while on this current ROM, But for some reason my 3g went away and never returned also lost most of my signal.. I even re-flashed it still did not work, SO i went back to the EC05 modem and my 3g and signal started working perfect again, I was affraid to flash to EI22 in fear of same thing happeneing again..

Kennyglass,
I'm pretty sure "Android System" is not an android system process. It is definitely CIQ on Gingerbread. Toggle Airplane mode on and off and then go to your system "running services" tab in manage applications. If you see Android System running, tap on it and see if it isn't called "IQ Agent Service." This is CIQ and it is notorious for eating battery.
bpdfs,
Also you need to log out of apps such as Amazon Mp3, Facebook, Google +, Google Maps Lattitude, etc. If you removed your Feeds and Updates Widget from one of your screens, be sure to kill or Force Stop "SNS Service," as it can get in a "restarting" loop without the widget to keep it happy.

I know about CIQ but tht was supposed to be taken care of in all versions of ACS ICS i thought???? tht is a reason i flashed that rom to begin with.
also i do not use any of those apps you are talking about.. so i know thats not an issue...

Gtalk is a BIG user of resources as is any Google apps like Google + and Maps. But on GB the battery stats has better reporting of everything that goes through android systems. Before on Froyo a lot of that ended up wrongly added to Display percentage.

I have a NoCIQ ROM and if you check Android system a LOT of stuff comes up. WiMax shows up, system settings, notification bar, VPN settings, saving of settings....tons of stuff including Android systems. If you notice there is no spot on there for applications. So where do you think they end up? Every app uses phone resources to run which is under Android system. After having my phone in standby all night it is 33%. I use it for an hour or two and it goes to 66%. CIQ if you have it runs all the time attached to a lot of files as seen in the difficulty to remove those files. CIQ had to have it's umbilical cord cut to keep it from running.

I am on Legendary 2.1 and don't have the bluetooth test or slate test running. Other than that your list is typical. I started at 35% off charge this morning. Used XDA app for 45 minutes maybe and it now says 85%. This is not an issue to worry about. Battery drains can be found in Betterbatterystats, not checking useless percentages. Android system is everything on your phone. If you want it to read low, don't run anything. It will be in the 20's or 30's then and cell standby will become high.

Maybe it's because the Android System really is using that much battery. I mean, if you're not using other things very often, then I would expect the general OS to be using the majority of the battery. I do know that on CM7, the android system percentage isn't that high. It could just be an error with the way things are being reported, but too would suggest BetterBatteryStats and check things out there. That will really tell you what's going on, like spare parts did with Froyo. The spare parts app doesn't even work with GB because I think it says the way GB does and reports things is so much different than Froyo.
Either way, if you're getting good battery life, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're having serious drain, BBS will tell you what is causing it so you can fix it.
It is a leak with the lock mod. And also Samsung ****ed up their code for reporting battery.

hey folks,
i need some direction with a particular problem...
check out the attached screenshots. why is the "android system" percentage so high?? i'm still in my learning stages, so i'm not sure how i can get rid of some of the processes, which i know are seriously harping on my battery life (which is great, but it can be much better, ya know?)..
any help would be appreciated!
It's so high because you were probably using your phone for the two minutes it was unplugged. Therefore, android system took up the majority of the battery used so far (which might be next to nothing since it was only two minutes).
Get a good task manger. You can exclude apps you want running and kill ones you don't. Also, there's a lot of battery optimization in rooted roms.

well, unplugged, it's usually 30-40% anyway. that's waaaay too high, especially since i keep hearing it being 2-3% here on the forums.

well, right now, it's at 4%, but i haven't touched it to use it, and it's unplugged. but, yesterday, i was at work, and i only used it a few times to text, respond to emails, check twitter (cyanogen stalking lol), and check time. it was at 30-40% at those times.
im new with android operating system so this might not be the entirely correct .. from my experience once you use the phone for multitasking and not closing the applications .. thats when that happens.
it also seems to happen when your batteries critically low and u click on the battery usage prompt that comes up.. hope that helps..

Sorry if this is the wrong section, but it seems like the only section specific to the Captivate Glide.
My wife's Glide is stock, very few widgets (google voice, battery, stock clock) and Android OS shows up at 40% when the phone is idle overnight and during the day during use. She has fb set up on socialhub with only contacts synced, 2 gmail accounts, and Touch(used to be pingchat). wifi is enabled and connected for most of the day. bluetooth is on too, but only connected when in the car.
I don't think it's Touch since I have it on my Atrix and Android OS is at 2-3% for me.
Any ideas?

do you have apps that can access your location? (weather apps, maps etc.) If yes, you may wanna go settings > location and security > and then uncheck "Use wireless network" in case you have not done it yet.

She might have some app that is are using way too much cpu, try doing a factory reset and check the usage, mine is currently %17.
Also the facebook app is a notorious battery thief. Battery usage percentage isn't standard for different people, if she's not using much features, the majority of her battery will be used by the OS since there is nothing else to use it.

Wouldn't phone idle be the max usage? For my Atrix phone idle is at 70% or so when I barely use the phone and Android OS is 3%. I can try disabling facebook overnight to see if the Android OS usage goes down.
The battery life for this phone is ok. It hits ~30% or so in the early evening, meaning we need to charge the phone if she goes out that evening. For my Atrix the battery doesn't hit 30% until midnight under light usage conditions (no games).
Is there an app or logcat keyword to filter to break down exactly which thread/process is using up the CPU?
edit: nm, going to read through this first
From looking at the wakelocks with BetterBatteryStats the likely culprit for the battery usage is the facebook chat portion of the fb app. The wife has many contacts in the chat, so it's probably polling quite a bit. For me the wakelock count for fb chat is fairly low. fb chat is a must for the wife so I can't disable it.
Also in the process screen I see several kworkers with high usage...not sure exactly what's causing that.
so for whatever reason the battery drain is now more acceptable even though the Android OS usage is still at ~50%. Could be the fb update, but the good battery performance occurred before the fb update.

my infuse 4g has a battery drain because of fb.....it's always the next thing that is draining the battery (i hope to get screenies). I just force close fb (or set refresh interval to "never") when I am done using it....

From the betterbatterystats output, I'm pretty sure the high Android OS usage is software related and specific to the stock ROM. The radio and wifi battery usage are normal.
I have no clue what the kworker processes are doing when the phone is supposed to be idle. Overnight my Atrix is 68% idle, 12% cell standby...android OS is 2%.
Idk you could try when putting it idle turn of Bluetooth and wifi and the data network this could help see

BT is already off. I could turn off both wifi and data network and if it turns out that is what is causing the battery drain (does not seem like it)...then what? Don't use wifi and the data network? It seems like there's little we can do as an average user to fix the high Android OS usage when idle. It does not seem like high kworker process usage can be fixed by TiBu or other simple fixes from a user.
Another update from Samsung, custom ROMs, and other dev fixes on xda seem to be the only options.

Whatever guys that stuff applies to any mobile device. Turn off stuff you arent using, ditch the live wallpapers, worthless apps, and status updates and you get more battery life. You want to surf, download, stream then by all means toggle wifi or 4g on but no reason to leave it on while you are doing nothing. Same goes with gps and bluetooth.

With the exact same setup I have now, I get 20-30 hours on gingerbread. On cm9... I get five.
I don't leave wifi on. Don't leave 4G on. Usually have a minimal screen on time of around thirty freaking minutes.
Don't tell me that I need to cripple my phone (i use it for business). Because there is something clearly wrong. I suspect it is the kernel. I don't have unnecessary apps installed (aside from ones that work great with gb). Don't use a live wallpaper. I do however, refuse to disable auto syncing.
There is clearly an issue with ICS.
I'm not going to turn my smartphone into a paperweight like you suggest.

Not using stuff you don't need is hardly crippling your phone its smart use. I never said anything about turning off auto sync either but you should be selective what you sync. Google plus, drive, picasa all sync pics and other crap in the background without telling you and it kills your battery especially if you are in a bad signal area. Figure out whats draining your battery by using better battery stats and apps like system panel lite http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Honestly though try another rom and do a clean install. If you get 80% less battery life no amount of tweaks will fix it and the ics leaks are good now. Several months ago the battery life was half of gb and now they are about the same.

Turn off LED notifications they're a known issue for wake-lock.
I get terrible battery life on alpha 5. Change to a stock kernel might help.
Kobridge's tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668853 along with Badass Battery and CPU Spy have helped me trace battery drainers. Also wholeheartedly agree turning off apk's and functions that are of specious value helps greatly ie.( auto rotate, auto brightness, dialing back on sync; etc.)
Good luck
I had been getting some higher battery drain with JB than I was with ICS, both were on rooted stock ATT roms. Early on I had posted that it was about the same as ICS, but after more and more use, I was starting to find that it really wasn't. I was consuming about 5-8% per hour idle and 10+ while actually using it. The idle bothered me the most because, obviously, using a phone will drain the battery
Two things have stood out as the high consumers: Media Scanner and poor signal.
To address the media scan drain, there have been suggestions to change CWM settings to backup as .tar rather than default .dup. This ONLY works if you re-do each nandroid that was a .dup as a .tar, delete the .dup backups, and clear the unused backup data through CWM. This removes the blobs folder files which will be in the thousands.
To address the poor signal drain, I flashed the UCLH9 modem (see modems thread in the development forum). Better Battery Stats is not showing any drain caused by poor signal, and this is also reflected by actual usage, the signal is simply... better.
Consumption is marginally higher than on ICS but not nearly as high as I was experiencing. If this has already been covered, my apologies for eating up server space...
Could you alternatively put a .nomedia file into the clockworkmod folder on the device? Would that prevent it from scanning that folder?
Well I'm bone stock and not rooted, I have no backups and the media is eating my battery like mad since the update. I've killed the process several times but it starts back up on its own. The only way I know to fix it will require root.

I have all the att and Samsung bloat frozen via TiBu.
Trust me, something is there. I never had the chance to figure out exactly which app it was though. I have a feeling that it may have something to do with a Samsung app.
I would suggest using OS Monitor from the Play Store. Make it show all system processes and see if you can dig deeper into it.
Edit: Also, here is my humble opinion too. People keep wanting new and better features. Well, that always comes at a cost. Just remember that. The iPhone boys are learning that the hard way too.

Edit: Also, here is my humble opinion too. People keep wanting new and better features. Well, that always comes at a cost. Just remember that. The iPhone boys are learning that the hard way too.

I agree with that sentiment... I'm considering reverting back to ICS but the smoothness of jelly beans is too enticing.
after making these changes yesterday I got a 40% battery consumption over 9 hours with average use which IMHO is plenty.
Solution is to reboot the phone OR unmount by going into settings, storage and unmount the USB there instead of from the notification bar. I think this solution works but have not tried it myself.
rebooting whenever the os gets out of hand, or unmounting the SD card, is not a viable option IMHO.
my post was directed toward root users who have cwm installed and are experiencing the media drain because of the blob files. the modem change I tried because all the reliable jelly bean ports seem to use the H9 modem. a weak mobile signal is detrimental to battery life, as is a weak or intermittent WiFi signal.
believe me, on my rooted phone, these two changes made a real and noticeable improvement in battery life in JB. I've gone half the day today on ICS and half the day on JB. battery consumption is now within the range I had on ICS.
one the one hand, I believe that some increase in consumption is due to the "omg I has the jelly beans and I'm going to use the bejeasus out of my phone" factor. I also believe that a good number of fixes and patches are simply a placebo effect. BUT, my phone had been getting hot and tearing up the battery due to signal searching in areas where it had been fine prior to the update. heck, we have an att tower within 100 ft if my office, I typically pull 69-70mbps at work. on the k3 modem I was regularly dropping data or losing LTE. not anymore.
Un mounting then re mounting seems to have worked for me the process can now be killed!

1% in the last hour and it wasn't idle the whole time. sent a few texts and spent a few minutes on Facebook. I'll take it...

Argh. k3 modem has been simply horrible. was constantly losing data though I initially thought it was the rom i was using. Is it safe to back flash from k3 to h9 or is there a certain procedure that needs to be done?

I used the CWM flashable zip from the thread in development. I did the typical cache/dalvik cache wipe first.
the last4 hours the phone was on my nightstand unplugged doinga sleep drain test. 0.3% per hour.
Ok I have found something running on my SGS3 that wasn't running all the time before and now its open constantly. I need to know if anyone knows if this one is safe to FC and then disable. Any help would be appreciated. I mean heck I wake up in the morning and this is running and I definitely am not using maps in my sleep.LOL anyways anyone know?

what is it?
OOPS! Sorry about that. MAPSserviceSamsung. I finally found the list of apps safe for disable and it is safe to disable. I'm seeing a bit of improvement in battery life. I also uninstalled facebook and reinstalled it and since doing these 2 things I'm things are getting much better.
I will have to try these. My battery is horrid. My OneX got easy 30+ hours of heavy use to a charge. My SG3 is lucky to get 8 hours. I average 10% an hour on mild use, heavy use and its as high as 15%

I'd like to see that list too if you don't mind sharing the info
I think I'm going to do a factory reset soon. Pretty sure that these drains are caused by some leftovers from ICS...
I know this horse has been beat to death, I'm just hoping I can get maybe one bit of info that will help me resolve this issue before I just swap out to another phone. I really don't want to, but I'm just so sick of being chained to a charging cord all day. My phone should be able to hold a charge for at least 1 day, I don't even use it that much!
So with my little tirade out of the way, let me give you the facts I've got a Samsung Galaxy S II/SPH-D710, and the battery just drains down so fast, and the phone's barely 6 months old. I've downloaded numerous process monitoring apps, designed to see what's going on, and they all point at WiFi being the culprit. The phone never hits deep sleep because the wireless is keeping it awake. Sure enough if I turn WiFi off and I go 3G/4G all day my battery is fine. Problem is I can't get to that next level and find out what program or process is causing the WiFi to be on all the time. Even more frustrating, every time there's an upgrade like FI27 or FL24 which I'm on now, the battery works fine for a day or two. Then something kicks in and destroys the battery. My thought is it's got to be an app, I just don't know which one.
So before I kick this piece of **** out the window, I was hoping someone could please help me figure out what app/process is the cause of my battery drain.
Get DS Battery Saver. It will force all of your stuff off when you turn off the screen so that it will go into deep sleep.

Get a new battery?
Apps, batteries, ics vodoo it's a host of things that can solve your battery drain issue. Being that your phone is 6 months old I have to rule out the battery. The fact that your on ics is going to be main culprit, stock ics was not the best at managing battery use. There's something revving the crap out of your Wi-Fi, while Wi-Fi is on even while your screen is off there are processes going on in the background that are using Wi-Fi to send receive, update, sync, you name it and all you need to do is pinpoint these processes.
Some apps in the play store can help, but some of these apps can consume battery also, so it's best to delete it after troubleshooting.
If your phone is working properly and your not a social media junkie while it sleeps it should not be using any battery at all, just enough to keep your processor awake.
I keep notifications are sync off on my phone, while I'm out and about I'll check email or do a quick sync if I want to check for some incoming whatever. Most of the time I want info on my terms, not every minute with chimes beeps or lights flashing.
If you use google maps disable background location reporting, location services just use "location and search " disable Wi-Fi and GPS usage for location services.
This is a start, but I recommend Jb ga10 stock/rooted to give your phone a stable os.
I run stock/rooted Jb de-bloated with minimal apps, no games (all the games I like are on my Galaxy Tab 10.1) I use my phone for calls........... navigation and media player while driving. I get 16 to 20 hrs on a charge.

I get about 20 hours on the Vanilla RootBox JB ROM. YMMV. I also had terrible battery life on the stock ROM and every other one I tried. This is the first ROM that's bested 10 hours. Again, YMMV.
what rom are you on? tw? cm?
Have you used Better Battery Stats? Or the JB release candidate GB08?
Not to raise the dead, I've just been busy, but this is still an issue for me. I upgraded to JB GB27, and I love the GUI, it’s such a step up from ICS. But I’m still getting **** for battery life. Yes if I use DS Battery Saver it works and I get good battery life. However all those programs cause flaky restart issues. The phone will just restart for no reason. More importantly it’s not getting at the root of the problem.
IRL I’m a computer tech and I can’t just let this go, as previously stated I’m tired of being shackled to the phone charger. I’ve swapped in a new battery, it’s not the battery. I even turned on the setting “Keep WiFi On > Only when plugged in”. That did improve the battery a little, but I still can’t make it through the day without being charged. I’m on the phone maybe combined 30min of phone calls, 30 min checking email, and an hour or so of miscellaneous watching video etc. I know heavy users that are on their phones all day, or let their kids watch Disney movies all night. I’m not that guy, I’ve had numerous cell phones and never have I had one that couldn’t hold a charge all day.
I will be diligent in monitoring this thread, please give me your troubleshooting tips and I’ll report back with the results.
Downlpaf betterbatterystats. And find the wakelocks.

Can do, will let you know at the end of the day.
EDIT: Actually I read multiple issues with SG2 and BetterBatteryStats. However your wakelock comment made me stumble onto the app Wakelock Detector. Again I'll run it and report back. Thanks for the point in the right direction.
Ive noticed no better or worse battery between being rooted/custom rom and stock not rooted. However my phone gets about 16 hours on average. My friend has an epic as well and gets only 10 hours. I feel as though it depends on the user and apps. Facebook is a silent killer. As is any app that uses backround. Best setup ive had so far is billgeryans Quattro Rom with ds and greenify. I pulled a whopping 25 hour minimal use before charge and 13 hour heavy use day.....

So how do you stop it? Do you just have to close out of every app before you set your phone down?

With titanium backup. You can also install greenify. It puts your apps in hibernation when your screen is off. So basically it's like freezing and unfreezing. Tbh I think it's better using greenify.

titanium can and you can create a widget to do it easily per app.
or
app-quarantine in playstore
or what I do:
shell commands usind connectbot widgets with a command like this:
pm disable-user com.facebook.katana
pm enable com.facebook.katana
---------- Post added at 07:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:32 PM ----------
so my 2 cents:
1) get a second battery and charger.
2) betterbatterystats to identify "bad" apps and either get rid of them or deal with them.
3) "autostarts" app to stop crap from auto starting on boot that you don't need running as a service.
4) dim screen! huge huge savings. keep it dim enough to use the phone.
Battery issues well I have a solution that won't solve but greatly helps. It's called greenify. It puts all running apps in hibernate mode. It's not like a task killer that just screws things up. U can choose what u want to hibernate and all that jazzy stuff. It's worth a shot. All in all if you want a bada$$ battery efficient rom go with wcx stock rooted rom. It's simply amazing. Hope I was at help

Check out greenify if you're rooted. It removes all currently unused apps and processes from memory, essentially putting them into deep sleep. That combined with ds battery saver and watching your wake locks will drastically improve battery life:beer:

Okay so does Greenify do this freeze automatically, the interface is a little clumsy. I appreciate all the help guys.
