[Q] Root DHD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
After many attemps trying to root my lovely DHD, I'm here to ask you one question.
I've read the manual a couple of time but there's nothing to do : There is always something not working with the advanced ace hack kit.
Everything is fine untill it says "failed" for the "sending update" process.
Could anyone tell me where is the problem?
(Enclosed : a copy of what it says).
Thank you!

Try a different sd card. And resolve any USB driver issues. It's best to disable all USB devices while running kit.

Could the SD card really be the problem?
I'm giving it a try, thank's!
Edit : Nothing changed! I'm giving a try with another PC tommorow

I just tried with another PC, another SD card and another usb port, nothing worked... :/. Any idea?

which version are you running? As aahk can't root Desire HD running android 2.3.5 sence 3.0 program version 3.13.161.3. Only 3.12.405.1 and lower is supported.

Yes the sd card can be an issue. Usually it will get stuck on info signature checking with a bad sd though. It does sound like you may be trying to root the new dhd 3.0 update which can't be rooted yet.

No no, I'm not so stupid, I'm trying to root the GINGERBREAD (2.3.3) version... I just can't understand what's going wrong...

Ok. Then using a different pc will probably be your best bet.

What do you exactly do when trying to root? Do you follow the instructions exactly? You need to do all steps in the effen manual

Have you tried a different cable? Something is going wrong and i didn't hear you mention using a different cable. Also this may seem obvious but gonna ask anyway. Have you checked to see if you are already s off?

have you tried the downgrade method ?

Hello,
I rooted the DHD of my girlfriend yesterday (using the ACE HAck 171211) and everything runs perfectly.
But now we wanted to upgrade via the official OTA update (Update to 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0) and it won't update. The DHD reboots, starts to update the system and within 1-2 seceonds it stops the update and show a Warning sign.
The DHD still works with the old System (after removing the battery).
Has anyone an idea ??
PS: I still try to get her to use ARHD 6.3.1

Once rooted you can not do factory updates. It relies on the stock recovery to install. You would have to unroot and then install ota but you wouldnt be able to root from the update until the hack kit supports the new version. You should just look for a rooted form of the new ota.

Problems after updating to 2.29.405.2

Hello,
I updated my desire (that has the original rom) to 2.29.405.2
After this update my internet browser crashes at start up. But i can read sites through the rss reader newsrob. An other (bigger) issue is that the touch input htcime crashes. So on almost every touch on the screen this error shows and i can't get my keyboard to show up. Is there a way to reinstall the update or rom? Will i lose my data? if so how to save and restore the applications with there data?
update: I got an unbranded htc desire from holland.
Thank you for your help.
did you unroot your phone? (unrevoked or similar)
no never rooted my phone. So didn't have to unroot.
I also did a reset to factory settings. Now the internet browser works again but the most annoying issue is still there that the touch input still crashes.
You could reflash the rom using the 2.29.405.2 RUU from shipped roms.
This would wipe your phone tho....

I would suggest you try rooting with unrEVOked recovery and try a different rom to see if the same behaviour still exists.

Do i look at the software number? seem like i am wayyy off lol...2.11 vs 2.29
I think my phone is an asian version...cus when I looked under language/keyboard, it says English (Hong Kong SAR, China) instead of USA/Canada like the typical ones lol...also when i do a factory reset, it is in chinese...I bought it second hand from a second hand cellphone store (this is a backup phone) so no box or anything, no idea where it originated from!
is it okay if i flash the euporean 2.29.405.2 RUU from shipped roms to the phone?
mmm, if you want to use the 2.29.405.2 rom, you will need to create a goldcard - do a search, there are tutorials on how to create one.
you cannot jump straight from 2.11.832.3 to 2.29.405.2
Yep, since your phone will most likely be region locked, you will need to create a Gold Card to unlock the CID before being able to root. If you like, try using the Gold Card Tool shown in my sig below.

Actually my phone is already rooted, I set it up a few days ago with Unrevoked! I already done some flashing with clockworkmod and apps that need roots access worked.
Anyways, I set up the goldcard just now. Hopefully there r no conflicts/problems setting it after already can root.
Btw I used this tutorial: http://www.droid-den.com/android-guides/android-guide-how-to-create-a-gold-card
Could you guys provide steps for me to upgrade from 2.11.832.3 to 2.29.405.2
Thanks, I want to go to the lastest!
Boot your phone into fastboot (power + back button), connect to PC, wait until it says fastboot usb and then run the ruu.
If your PC fails to recognise your phone via USB, then you could also try doing it via the PB99IMG method as it is a lot easier. It should work for you but you need to unlock your phones CID with a Gold Card first before proceeding. Once you have made the Gold Card, rename your rom zip file to PB99IMG.zip and place it in the root of your SD card.
Next, press the volume down + power and you should be on the HBOOT menu screen.
After a short while, you should get output from loading the PB99IMG.zip file, then you will be prompted to start the update, confirm this and reboot when ready

If you've got a gold card, you can now update to another rom.

Hi guys, just like the OP I have problems with the latest software version 2.29.405.2. I got this update about 3 days ago, on an unbranded Desire that I bought here in Holland in a package deal at a local KPN/Hi shop.
The device has been working perfectly for the last 1,5 months until I got this update, I am experiencing random crashes and I notice that when I go into Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications and look at the names and sizes of applications, the values of the sizes somehow break during parsing/loading the screen which means it doesn't properly list the sizes of the application after the name of the application. To get an idea there is just numbers there like '10' instead of 10,05KB.
When the phone crashes it just becomes unresponsive and it happens both when in standby and 2 times now during useage whilst going thru menu's and I have to remove the battery to be able to boot again.
My girlfriend has the exact same phone for 5 weeks and also installed the upgrade without any problems, the values in the manage application are still showing okay for her as well after the update so I think her update/software is functioning properly while mine is FUBAR atm.
I have tried resetting the phone to factory defaults 2 times now, without luck.
Any ideas?
Can I just try flashing the phone again with the same software, safely? Since I bought this unbranded and it's a relatively new phone, do I need to mess around with rooting or gold cards? Just seems odd. Thanks for any advice you can give on this.

[Q] Help me get back to stock!!

I have a Telus Desire HD and I managed to downgrade then root and Radio s-off,then installed Revolution HD 5.2.3 and everything is great.
However now i am selling it and the person that wants it says he wants it stock with no root or custom anything.
Honestly I don't know how to go about it to do this and that is why I need some help from someone that has more experience and knowledge than me.
Thanks in advance and if i left out any important info about my phone let me know and i will include it.
You should have made a backup of your stock rom .
if you did flash it though recovery. It will lose root. Still be s-off but they wont know ha.
failing that you need an official ruu. This is an .exe file used. With a windows pc. You will find these in the dev forum or the htc website. Ruu will.remove s-off radio-off and the eng hboot.
if you dort have a pc or cant connect your dhd to it. Flash a stock (but custom) ·rom and tell them its done.
.if they dont mod phones they wont know the difference.

Thanks twiztedvvv for replying...
I'm gonna run down once more what is on the DHD at the moment so I can get the correct info on how to bring this back to stock.

ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-085.0007

Before I rooted and installed custom rom the phone had the Telus logo when it booted but now its gone since I rooted and flashed the custom rom.
I managed to download to RUU's...
RUU_ACE_GINGERBREAD_S_TELUS_WWE_2.43.661.1_R_Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_194001_signed

So after reading this what is your recommendation?Do i still need the gold card to flash the stock rom?
Thanks for the help bud!
Personally i would go for the first one you listed. Connect your phone to htc.sync and double click the ruu. It should run the update and return your phone to stock. No goldcard or special method needed. Let me know if it goes well?

Oh man I think something is wrong....I fired up the first RUU and went trough all the instructions and hit update and it rebooted the phone to the black screen with the htc logo and its been sitting there for like over 30 min. What should I do,should I disconnect and try again or what.
I am so scared that this damn phone is bricked, please help!!
Edit:
Wow I almost got a heart attack and thought it bricked but was relieved when it booted up again.
But now I am scared to attempt this again and I don't know what went wrong.
Did it flash the RUU? or are you still rooted?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
No,unfortunately it did not flash cause it got stuck at the black HTC screen and then I disconected the cable rebooted the phone.
And now I am totally scared to even make a second attempt but eventualy I will have to.What is the chance of bricking the phone while running th RUU?
I have never heard of it happening before but I don't want you to be the first.
I don't understand why it didn't flash. If Ruu are not compatible it won't try to flash them. Usually.
I know its not morally right. But could you flash a stock rom via recovery then remove the superuser app. Giving the impression of being stock. Will be safer for you.

Is it possible to even brick with RUU at all?I want to give it a second try but the thought off bricking is scaring me.I use to own an Iphone before I switched to Android and I had the worst experience with the Iphone that it left a mental scar on me.
Anyway I spoke to the guy that wants to buy my phone and he is basicaly now saying that he wont mind having the phone rooted but he would like to have a stock rom on it.
I tried to tell him that the current rom that I have on (Revolution HD 5.2.4) is way better than stock but he is not listening to me.
There are stock roms in the dev section. Ill grab a link for you if I have time. Bit busy at the monent sorry.
Idont think you can brick with an ruu but I'm not 100 percent. Id go with the stock rom through recovery.

This, I believe, is the best option. And the safest.
Its a standard zip to flash through recovery. Its rooted but as the person buying the phone said they want stock. This is the closest you will get without an RUU. Glad to be able to help.

I am definetely getting another Android.I am never going back to iPhone ever,it was a nightmare owning an iPhone in the past and it left me disappointed.

I will let you know how it goes and thanks again for helping out, much appreciated.

Not sure why the ruu failed. But if you want to give an alternative a try is run the ruu for the first two steps, right before it begins flashing. Go into your temp folder. You'll see a folder named bunch of gibberish. In there look for rom.zip. copy it and rename it PD98IMG. Place in the root of your SD card and flash through hboot
So I am on Windows 7 and where is this temp folder located specifically?
Could it be possible that the RUU failure is caused by win7?
Sent from my Desire HD
In the start menu search %temp%.
Not sure. Could be maybe a driver issue? Did you have USB debugging on? Maybe a bad download?
I've ran ruus on windows 7. So I doubt its the os
I think I did have usb debuging on....you think tat could be the problem?
And thanks for the search tip I managed to find the folder.
I will give this a shot in the morning with a nice cup of coffee .
Sent from my Desire HD
ive always have mine to have usb debugging on when connected to a pc, but not positive that it is required for the ruu. Ive only ran an RUU a couple of times.
Also do you have HTC Sync installed? if not install it and try RUU again. Personally i prefer the PD98IMG method though. keep us posted
I do have HTC synch installed so I think that can't be the problem.
I'll try the RUU method one more time and if it fails then I will try your method.
Thank's for your kind help sir.

ok. let me know if it works. maybe try the other ruu this time. first one you tried must be wrong. good luck

SwiftKeyed from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
In my humble opinion I would say: Do a complete wipe of everything and then do a clean stock rom install. After that try again. ow btw the update from HTC for your bootloader unlocker is NOT for the HTC Desire! But revolutionary works 100%. Did so on my HTC Desire WITH the new Gingerbread update. Now I am S-Off and rooted and have the Leedroid rom running ( with some tweaks)

First of all if I am not mistaken Unrevoked doesn't "fully"root your phone. because your S-on doesn't turn into S-off. Therefore you usualy needed to do a nand root. And that could brick your phone if that fails
Sorry if I seem a little cautious with my words because I am a little newbe to all this
But with the Revolutionary tool it works. Trial and error on my own HTC Desire to prove it
You should be able to look for a Froyo RUU or even the newest Gingerbread update for the Desire and flash your phone with it. And then start from scratch with rooting with Revolutionary. If you allready did the update from froyo to Gingerbread there is no turning back to Froyo for now as far as I know. So you have to flash again with Gingerbread
Look on the threads her at XDA and you will find it or even try google. If you done that with succes you start rooting S-off with the revolutionary tool.
Don't bother trying to unlock the bootloader with the unlocker from HTC!! It is not ment for the Desire...!
hope this helped

I'd go right ahead and download the Gingerbread update from HTC, wouldn't bother with the Goldcard because you may spend a lot of time trying to fix something which is unfixable. I seem to remember having a problem like yours, which was only solved by downloading an installing the official HTC RUU, I had also tried to get S-Off with Unrevoked but didnt use the right driver(was using HTC's driver, or maybe another, whatever it was it wasn't the right one to use with unrevoked, although unrevoked seemed to have worked!?).
Revolutionary has improved upon Unrevoked though. Its a lot simpler, the process is quicker and there's no user interaction at all. If you back up as much of the stuff and apps with titanium as you can or just your personal stuff, shouldnt be to much of a hassle.

And at this point he will need a goldcard (maybe) to avoid cid error. That's why I asked if his phone was branded or not. So please do not talk about an error which is not fixable without defining which error you mean more precisely.

To backup apps with tb, one needs root access. The thread opener does not have it and revolutionary does not give you root access till one's flashing the zip mentioned on the documentary site.
And revolutionary is another matter altogether, because the op wants to go back to stock. He may run revolutionary then.

I would do this: switch off the phone, remove the battery for 10 seconds, plug the battery again, charge full with phone still off with htc ac charger (2.5 hours at least), remove the charger, switch on the phone, ensure u have usb debug active, connect the phone to ur pc, run the ruu (if u are no brand use the 2.29.405.5)

[Q] Please help

Can anyone please help me? I do not understand what I'm doing wrong. I am unable to achieve S off on my Incredile 2. I've tried 2 diffent computers, several different usb outlets, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and all it keeps telling me is to go get some lemonade, lol. Fasyboot is turned of and usb debugging is on. So, I'm lost. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreiciated, thx
Are you on froyo or gingerbread? I believe the new revolutionary tool is for GB, so that will make a difference.
I'm on froyo, but followed a video to use revolutionary. It says it will not work with GB. the method that they were using, but did also see it being used for GB another way. Should I update the phone to GB 1st?

Art is right, you need to make sure you are using the correct tool/procedure depending upon what stock version (Froyo or Gingerbread) you are starting from. Good luck!
is AlpdaREV the only way to gain S off as of right now? I cannot update the phone since there is no service to it even with wifi. I'm trying to root it then flsh it to Cricket Mobile.
u can use the gingerbread official ruu and flash it with hboot to upgrade then run revolutionary. usually if you get the lemonade message you have gotten s off though

s-off is what you want, but i'll assume that's a typo o.o
if you're on froyo, use alpharevX, if you're on gingerbread, use revolutionary
sorry i meant S-on
Ok, so I was using revolutionary, but have found posts that alpharev x is no longer in use. I found the Zip, n tried it with no luck once again, please shoot me, lol. Since I generated a beta key prior using revolutionary it is not excepted in rev x. So, i guess I'm left with gingerbread ruu through HBOOT. Can anyone direct me were to find out how to do this? I am unsure which image to extract n if it is to go in the adb file or what. thx

Ok, thx for the link. I did that and followed the instructions, and nothing. I keep getting no image or wrong image when I boot into HBOOT. Sry, for all the issues. i just cant wrap my head around this. Probably since I've been at it for 18 hrs straight and my head is filled with to much information after all I've read.

You need to rename it PG32IMG.zip and put it in the root of your sdcard.

yes and be careful if u rename it on a computer don't type the .zip because your cpu will automatically put the .zip in. also make sure it is named exactly right it is case sensitive

[Q] How to root HTC Evo 4G on 2.3.4??

Ok so I've been looking around and can't seem to find really good answers to my questions. First of all I'm wanting to root a Japanese HTC Evo 4G on version 2.3.4 Hboot 2.15. The only way I can really find how to do this is to go through HTCdev and do a bootloader unlock. Now my problem with that is that it says it will wipe all personal information on the phone during this process, which I don't want to have to go through and re-input everything again. All posts I find on this are pretty old and don't seem to apply atm. So I guess basically I have a couple questions. Can you back up this info so that you don't have to back through and manually re-input it all?? Is it safe and good to do for my phone? I'm fairly familiar with the root process as I had an HTC Evo 4G before that I rooted but ended up losing that phone and had to get a new one, that being said it was my first root ever done. Also if anybody knows of roms that work great with the AU mail service?? I had flashed a couple of roms before and couldn't get that service back on the phone no matter what I tried so stayed rooted with just stock rom. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated and links and such. Thank you
Also I should mention that I don't understand or speak enough japanese to actually feel comfortable following a japanese youtube video on how to do this. I watched 1 and understood most of what he was saying but just not comfortable enough to use it as a guide.
Use the Revolutionary tool to root your phone http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Hmm nope doesn't work. I keep getting Failed to get Root! Not sure what else to do after I punch in the beta key and hit enter it just sits at Zerging Root for about 30 secs then pops that up. Also it appears that maybe the HTCdriver is not working properly? When I look at the drivers from my computer for the phone it says 2.0.7.6 and when I click on the HTCdriver 3.0.0.007 nothing really happens except for asking for permission to run and then I hit run and that's it.
So here's a question now. I see I can delete the driver for this. Should I, then try to run HTCdriver 3.0.0.007?? Not sure what else to do atm.
Try uninstalling the driver and install them with this http://dl3.htc.com/application/sync/htc_sync_3.0.5617_us.exe
Then try using the revolutionary tool

Make sure your driver's are up to date, that HTC Sync is completely uninstalled from your computer, use a good USB cable & make sure the phone is booted to the OS.

You don't by chance have a PC36IMG file on your SD card, do you? I saw where this was causing some issues for others, particularly when the phone reboots to the bootloader. Delete the file if it's there, rename it or move it off the root of your SD card.
Also, make sure you have USB debugging enabled on your phone, and any antivirus software on your computer turned off. I've used Revolutionary to root & S-off 4 different OG EVO's and I've only had an issue once, and it was due to HTC Sync being installed on my laptop (Revolutionary would open and then immediately close).
