Problems after updating to 2.29.405.2 - Desire General

Hello,
I updated my desire (that has the original rom) to 2.29.405.2
After this update my internet browser crashes at start up. But i can read sites through the rss reader newsrob. An other (bigger) issue is that the touch input htcime crashes. So on almost every touch on the screen this error shows and i can't get my keyboard to show up. Is there a way to reinstall the update or rom? Will i lose my data? if so how to save and restore the applications with there data?
update: I got an unbranded htc desire from holland.
Thank you for your help.

did you unroot your phone? (unrevoked or similar)

no never rooted my phone. So didn't have to unroot.
I also did a reset to factory settings. Now the internet browser works again but the most annoying issue is still there that the touch input still crashes.

You could reflash the rom using the 2.29.405.2 RUU from shipped roms.
This would wipe your phone tho....

I would suggest you try rooting with unrEVOked recovery and try a different rom to see if the same behaviour still exists.

Do i look at the software number? seem like i am wayyy off lol...2.11 vs 2.29
I think my phone is an asian version...cus when I looked under language/keyboard, it says English (Hong Kong SAR, China) instead of USA/Canada like the typical ones lol...also when i do a factory reset, it is in chinese...I bought it second hand from a second hand cellphone store (this is a backup phone) so no box or anything, no idea where it originated from!
is it okay if i flash the euporean 2.29.405.2 RUU from shipped roms to the phone?

mmm, if you want to use the 2.29.405.2 rom, you will need to create a goldcard - do a search, there are tutorials on how to create one.
you cannot jump straight from 2.11.832.3 to 2.29.405.2

Yep, since your phone will most likely be region locked, you will need to create a Gold Card to unlock the CID before being able to root. If you like, try using the Gold Card Tool shown in my sig below.

Actually my phone is already rooted, I set it up a few days ago with Unrevoked! I already done some flashing with clockworkmod and apps that need roots access worked.
Anyways, I set up the goldcard just now. Hopefully there r no conflicts/problems setting it after already can root.
Btw I used this tutorial: http://www.droid-den.com/android-guides/android-guide-how-to-create-a-gold-card
Could you guys provide steps for me to upgrade from 2.11.832.3 to 2.29.405.2
Thanks, I want to go to the lastest!

Boot your phone into fastboot (power + back button), connect to PC, wait until it says fastboot usb and then run the ruu.
If your PC fails to recognise your phone via USB, then you could also try doing it via the PB99IMG method as it is a lot easier. It should work for you but you need to unlock your phones CID with a Gold Card first before proceeding. Once you have made the Gold Card, rename your rom zip file to PB99IMG.zip and place it in the root of your SD card.
Next, press the volume down + power and you should be on the HBOOT menu screen.
After a short while, you should get output from loading the PB99IMG.zip file, then you will be prompted to start the update, confirm this and reboot when ready

If you've got a gold card, you can now update to another rom.
Do you still want to be rooted or not?

Hi guys, just like the OP I have problems with the latest software version 2.29.405.2. I got this update about 3 days ago, on an unbranded Desire that I bought here in Holland in a package deal at a local KPN/Hi shop.
The device has been working perfectly for the last 1,5 months until I got this update, I am experiencing random crashes and I notice that when I go into Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications and look at the names and sizes of applications, the values of the sizes somehow break during parsing/loading the screen which means it doesn't properly list the sizes of the application after the name of the application. To get an idea there is just numbers there like '10' instead of 10,05KB.
When the phone crashes it just becomes unresponsive and it happens both when in standby and 2 times now during useage whilst going thru menu's and I have to remove the battery to be able to boot again.
My girlfriend has the exact same phone for 5 weeks and also installed the upgrade without any problems, the values in the manage application are still showing okay for her as well after the update so I think her update/software is functioning properly while mine is FUBAR atm.
I have tried resetting the phone to factory defaults 2 times now, without luck.
Any ideas?
Can I just try flashing the phone again with the same software, safely? Since I bought this unbranded and it's a relatively new phone, do I need to mess around with rooting or gold cards? Just seems odd. Thanks for any advice you can give on this.

[Help] Rooted -> RUU -> unrerootable?

Hi All,
Ok i have a somewhat confusing problem.
I rooted my desire originally using the r5 desire root pack. All was fine and well, upon moving to oxygen i used the alpharev n1tables and woo all still good.
I picked up a Nexus S for myself and gave my Desire to my GF. Before giving it back I ran the "RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed" RUU to revert it to 'normal' (its actually a debranded TMob)
The GF would now like Oxygen again like I had. I've been trying to reroot the device but i'm not getting anywhere. The HBOOT is stilll .93 so i think Alpharev is still working. When I try to use the r5 root i previously used it errors on step1, but continues to the end.
Upon trying to apply the rootedupdate.zip it fails to verify een with a fresh goldcard.
I've also tried using the unrevoked latest version, but it does not detect the phone .
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

use unreovoked www.unrevoked.com/recovery . older root methods dont work on the newer hboots.
Are you sure you're running unrevoked correctly? With the right drivers?
Id also recommend running a more recent unbranded RUU before rooting.

How to go back to stock ROM?

Hi all,

Are you having the problem doing it manually, if so try using FULL-WIPE.

Did you make a goldcard before rooting? if not, this could be the issue.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yes, i did create a Goldcard when i first did it a long time ago.. Tried FULLWIPE.ZIP as well.
at this stage im going to have to send it back to VF with Android revolution on it..
kiwiboy1978,
Check this guide / links to guides for your very problem;
The Complete Guide 2 Return Rooted Phone Back 2 Stock for Vodafone Australia Warranty
The procedure should be the similar for othe carriers, although you might have to obtain the HBOOT & Recovery image from elsewhere.
Can you explain about the goldcard question. If I DIDNT use a goldcard would it cause this? I didnt think that I could root the mobile in the first place without the goldcard.
Its just weird as every other ROM installs without a hitch. Just the stock Vodafone ROM is doing this. And of course its the one I really need back on there!
aargh!!
**clarification, i did use a goldcard as far as i remember*
I never had to use a gc, as not carrier branded. Reading on xda, others have had issues trying to downgrade to stock without the gc. Without it they were getting cid mismatch or such when trying to flash.
Even if you have cid 11111111 now, it is still possible to check what your cid was before. Maybe this is part of the "check" it does when trying to flash back and giving cid errors/mismatch.
Check original in ADB, command prompt;
adb shell getprop ro.cid
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
ok, checked my CID and its VODAP021.. does this sound right?
shouldnt it be as you suggest 111111111?
If you did it in adb, that confirms that your phone was definitely carrier branded and you need s gc.
If you go to fastboot, system info, if your phone is s-off, cid will show 11111111.
I'm away atm, and can't really to any digging for you, sorry. There are a few threads going around on the topic, incl the one I gave you previously.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
ok. remade a goldcard got the stock ROM on it, same issue.
under system info it says S-OFF but the CID is still VODAP021. do I need to root this phone again using Visionary?
Deleted, been a long day.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Hi, just wanted to thank you anyway.
Those guides didnt work in my case. What I ended up doing was re-rooting the phone. Making a backup of the Android-revolution HD rom through ROM Manager, then replacing the contents of the backup folder with the contents of the Vodafone ROM.
This worked.
Cheers.
Good to hear.

If you have rooted your phone you don't really need the gold card, as that was a method used to debrand a phone without having to root.
Which method did you use to root your phone?

Not entirely true. I rooted my Desire first then used an ruu but I have to use a goldcard to do it.
To be honest, you don't really need to debrand your phone. Just whack a rom on it.

Yeah I know I can put another Rom on . But at the moment I just want to try the stock HTC Rom.
Make sure you use a pre rooted rom otherwise you could find yourself losing root, could be a bit of a problem too with htc locking down thier phones.
I am not too bothered if it does remove root.
I assume it can be re rooted .
I know there were reported problems over on the android forums from some people losing root & not being able to root again.
Not sure if that was sorted out, could be a good idea to ask around some more to be certain.
You sure the ruu is a complete dl? Have to download multiple times off shipped roms, first few tries are always partials.

Still I am fine with that just need to get the T-Mobile sh*t.off the the phone. As they think it exceptable not to realise Rom updates . When HTC clearly think it is needed.

Check it. Use the gingerbreak method. It works.
http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3867.0
I had accidentally tried 2.37 via the pd98img and everything was locked up, so I wanted to get back to 2.36 but the RUU no longer would work. Im suprised my steps & toolkit still worked considering people are saying that the last version of gingerbreak didnt work. Well it still did for me (and a few other users) and NO goldcard was needed.
It doesn't work for me
At step 1. Download and Run this RUU to downgrade your device (plug in, run it, and let it do its magic): I got a failure (-> picture).
In Englisch: failure 140: Bootloader-Version-Failure
The ROM Update Utility Programm can't update the Android-Phone.
You need the right one and try again.
But which one is right? I tried more than ten ...
Again: I have (telekom)-branded Gingerbrad 2.37.111.6. No root an S-ON
help me please
thanks

which RUU are you using are you using?
try skipping the RUU part of it, and just start at step 2 with the gingerbreak method.
Are you saying that Gingerbreak method in your post works on an S-ON 2.37 phones?
I wasn't able to make gingerbreak work either. My phone also lagged and FC with most widgets, won't connect to the mobile and wireless network. I thought I broke something by having radio s-off. But fortunately after Factory reset and wipe cache. everything went smoothly. Trouble is I have to setup my DHD again. ontly thing I was able to successfully restore was the contacts. using the built-in export tool.

I tried the SAME .exe from another page...
So start at step 2 with gingerbreak: (in Charge mode?!)
At step 4 my phone doesn't install Gingerbreak from PC - so I copied the apk to my device, run it but nothing happens. It sags only: Rooting...; Running exploit...; This may take a few minutes! Device will reboot on success.
Now I'm waiting more than a half an hour! What's wrong?

So why not upgrade? I mean does anyone know how to create FOTA updates? Coz maybe we can trick the phone to update to 1.32 but maybe change the numbers to 2.38 or something like that.

SwiftKeyed from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
In my humble opinion I would say: Do a complete wipe of everything and then do a clean stock rom install. After that try again. ow btw the update from HTC for your bootloader unlocker is NOT for the HTC Desire! But revolutionary works 100%. Did so on my HTC Desire WITH the new Gingerbread update. Now I am S-Off and rooted and have the Leedroid rom running ( with some tweaks)

First of all if I am not mistaken Unrevoked doesn't "fully"root your phone. because your S-on doesn't turn into S-off. Therefore you usualy needed to do a nand root. And that could brick your phone if that fails
Sorry if I seem a little cautious with my words because I am a little newbe to all this
But with the Revolutionary tool it works. Trial and error on my own HTC Desire to prove it
You should be able to look for a Froyo RUU or even the newest Gingerbread update for the Desire and flash your phone with it. And then start from scratch with rooting with Revolutionary. If you allready did the update from froyo to Gingerbread there is no turning back to Froyo for now as far as I know. So you have to flash again with Gingerbread
Look on the threads her at XDA and you will find it or even try google. If you done that with succes you start rooting S-off with the revolutionary tool.
Don't bother trying to unlock the bootloader with the unlocker from HTC!! It is not ment for the Desire...!
hope this helped

I'd go right ahead and download the Gingerbread update from HTC, wouldn't bother with the Goldcard because you may spend a lot of time trying to fix something which is unfixable. I seem to remember having a problem like yours, which was only solved by downloading an installing the official HTC RUU, I had also tried to get S-Off with Unrevoked but didnt use the right driver(was using HTC's driver, or maybe another, whatever it was it wasn't the right one to use with unrevoked, although unrevoked seemed to have worked!?).
Revolutionary has improved upon Unrevoked though. Its a lot simpler, the process is quicker and there's no user interaction at all. If you back up as much of the stuff and apps with titanium as you can or just your personal stuff, shouldnt be to much of a hassle.

I'd go right ahead and download the Gingerbread update from HTC, wouldn't bother with the Goldcard because you may spend a lot of time trying to fix something which is unfixable.

About which unfixable are you talking about? You get cid error when you want to flash stock ruu although your phone was branded.

I seem to remember having a problem like yours, which was only solved by downloading an installing the official HTC RUU

And at this point he will need a goldcard (maybe) to avoid cid error. That's why I asked if his phone was branded or not. So please do not talk about an error which is not fixable without defining which error you mean more precisely.
Revolutionary has improved upon Unrevoked though. Its a lot simpler, the process is quicker and there's no user interaction at all. If you back up as much of the stuff and apps with titanium as you can or just your personal stuff, shouldnt be to much of a hassle.

To backup apps with tb, one needs root access. The thread opener does not have it and revolutionary does not give you root access till one's flashing the zip mentioned on the documentary site.
And revolutionary is another matter altogether, because the op wants to go back to stock. He may run revolutionary then.
I tried doing it by ruu HTC but always giving me error 120 battery less than 30%....
What can I do?

I would do this: switch off the phone, remove the battery for 10 seconds, plug the battery again, charge full with phone still off with htc ac charger (2.5 hours at least), remove the charger, switch on the phone, ensure u have usb debug active, connect the phone to ur pc, run the ruu (if u are no brand use the 2.29.405.5)
