Hey guys, im new to all this rooting and rom stuff, so sorry if this is really basic stuff.
I want to root and put a custom rom on my droid inc 2, and I think I understand how to root now.
Now, I'm trying to decide on a ROM to flash after i root. I absolutely hate sense, and think its really clunky. I've been looking at the ICS rom thread, and somewhere between pages 50 and 100 something, people start talking about CM 9 for the inc 2, and all these different developers different roms, and I was thinking, which one is the best?
So, here is what I would like to see in a ROM, to help you reccomend one for me.(listed in order of importance)
-Smoothness
-Good Battery Life.
-CRT Animation. (I know, a little silly, but i want it so badly)
-Ability to customize different aspects without flashing too many files/lots of terminal stuff. e.g. boot animation, status bar colors.
If you know a ROM that fufills most of these requirements of mine that is not ICS, please let me know. Thanks.
Until today,no best,no perfect ics for Inc2.
Many rom is alpha, and beta, even don't have complete drivers for ics.
Miui all the way friend, its very smooth and customization are incredible. No flashing to customize just download to go. I recommend looking at the lock screen page that alone is enough to try it out.

PipelinerArd has the best ICS ROM in my opinion, everything important is working and it runs very smooth, and he is constantly improving the ROM.

Been using latest cm10 (jb). I'd say that fits what you're looking for. I'm a basic user. Battery life far improved over previous releases. Aeroevan ftw. Can't go wrong with his stuff, cm9 or 10.

Seeing as this was about a year ago, I assume you found a rom by now. That being said, I will be flashing the IC Tazz rom (sense free version) on my wifes phone tonight. Very stable and everything works. The cm9 and 10 roms have problems with cameras and audio issues. All roms have quirks, but some have more and more severe than others.

The best rom for the evo right now is the mikfroyo 4.4 hands down. In terms of speed and customized features it is my favorite of all and mik is already working on
V 4.5 so for u its time to start flashing and enjoying your powerhouse that is the evo the way u suppose to. Happy flashing and have fun!

Sorry, I meant Konikub's themes.
NEED TO TRY ROMS: DONT GO WITHOUT AT LEAST 3 HOURS ON THESE.
myn's warm twopointtwo: insane themeing. blows your mind and other parts (hehe). fast, stable, just very themed and very feature inclusive.
caulkin's evio 2: incredibly fast. this dude is amazing. you will find his 'usb/wifi tether hack, reboot mod, mms limit/compression mod's in almost every rom out there. slightly themed to not look as fugly as the htc version, very good battery, extreme speed, etc etc etc.
ava-froyo z3: this man is quite a coder. he goes deep inside the rom to alter things never touched by other devs, including radio, 4g, memory management, etc. its a hit and miss for some phones, but gets amazing results on others.
cyanogenmod: vanilla aosp, the biggest project on the xda. built on many different phones, huge team, incredible changes, its like a whole new phone. you wont get the same results or features from any other phone on the market. no hdmi (claims its almost done) and FINALLY 4G (in alpha 2 testing, the code for 4g had to be totally rewritten by two guys. thats probably the biggest feat in this phone's history)
miui: a crossover aosp rom that looks almost like the iphone but with the functionality and customizability of android +100. infinite amount of features. this isnt really built on anything... everything is different. a brand new operating system pretty much. worth a flash. some love it, some (like me) dont.
I am currently using this ROM [ROM(S)]CM7-EX.v9, its pretty neat, still has a few minor issues but it's usable and yeah its Gingerbread. No 4G or HDMI.

Well put. I will +1 you on the CyanogenMod. Great stable ROM with tons of customizability and features out of wazoo.
I would also put in a recomendation foe Fresh Evo ROM by Flipz. Maintains a familiar Sense UI but has some nice performance tweaks and removes all of the bloatware. Also has full HDMI and 4G support. Just another simple and user friendly option for custom ROM that does not get too radical.

I like all the responses here and how members try to help, especially the 8th grade kid, lol.
I for one won't flash a rom where any of the features of the phone won't work, despite the fact of the great work all of those guys are doing to bring gingerbread to us, I applaud all their hard work. Whatever rom u flash, make sure u do a full wipe so u can get a clean install, do a back up or nandroid before u start flashing and read, read, read and keep on reading, that's the most important thing, get acquainted with any issues or problems that may arise with the roms u gonna flash so u don't panick and go all monkey if the phone freezes or whatever the situation may be. Finally be ready for the storm, flashing is an addiction hard to control.
My top five (which may not be your top five)
MIUI
Evoneo
vaelpak
burnt droid
Evio2

I know this has already been said but I just have to agree with Cyanogen. The stable build (6.1.2?) is incredibly nice with plenty to do. On the other hand, Cyanogen7 (i.e. nightlies) are a bit more finnicky (still a superb work in progress). I used the stable build until I had enough courage (newbie myself to android) to start trying the night builds. I really dont want to go back to anything else now, not even the stable. Getting excellent battery life (intermittent tho), great look, very customizable. Def worth a try, if anything
Depends on what you want our of your rom. I tried many, but heres my personal experience.
I went with miui for awhile. Loved the speed and uniqueness. In the end missed everything working perfect.
Went to azrael for awhile. Fastest sense rom in my opinion. Highly recommend if you like sense.
Since I don't like sense, but want stuff to be fully functional, I'm currently on vaelpak. Very fast, great on battery, and the vaelpak settings app makes it very easy to tune to your liking.

I need a Gingerbread/Sense ROM with and emphasis on stability. Close to stock would be best though it isn't paramount. I realize that ROMs are like beers, you get a different opinion on which is best depending on who you ask. The circumstances just don't allow me to try out a whole slew of ROMs.
A good friend's wife has an EVO 4G (I have a Sensation, G2x & HD2) and is having trouble with stability. I suggested we root it and slap a custom ROM on it. While they were over I rooted it and got everything ready to back up and slap a ROM on it. Problem is I am unsure as to what ROM to put on it. Yes, I could try out several ROMs to find one that works but this isn't going to go well at all. The reasons should be obvious for anyone who is married. This is magnified by the fact that I would only have access to the phone maybe once every other week. I need a silver bullet for this one.
Thank you for your time.

If you go Synergy RLS1 is the newest version. RC2 is older and was an unofficial release I believe. I never had a problem with the lock screen on Synergy.

1. If she is having a problem with stability on a stock unrooted Evo then she needs to backup her information and just do a factory reset.
2. Trying out several ROMs is required because phones react to various ROMs differently. I can tell you that a certain ROM plays well with my phone but it may not play quite as well with yours. Then comes the issue of kernels. Kernels have a large impact on the phone's stability as well.
3. Tell your friend to do his own homework on how to get her phone up and running or have an affair with her so that you can see her more often and get more opportunities to test ROMs/kernels on her phone.
What version of Sense would you prefer?

The EVO 4G has 2.5 by default I believe. I run the leaked 3.5 on my Sensation and it has some improvements over 2.5 and a couple over 3.0. If there is a very stable and fully functional ROM with 3.x that would be better. Stability and functionality still trump everything else though.
They mentioned that Netflix has to work as they use it often. Skype working properly with video would be good as well.

i agree AOSP Roms are a lot better, smoother, and allow for more customization, that's why the thread i made in my sig is only about them and not about sense based roms. plus whenever an ICS rom comes out it'll be AOSP
I'm going to be flashing an SGS2 for someone I know and I was wondering what a good setup as far as ROM, kernel, recovery, radio is for stability and features.
They upgraded from a LG G2x running CM7.2 Nightlies so they have basic experience with custom ROMs, but they don't know all that extreme technical crap.
I'm thinking about Juggernaut because it has a lot of good tweaks and features or maybe CM7 since they aren't many thing on the non-working list.
Please reply with any helpful suggestions, I'm considering flashing an ICS ROM but I'm not sure if it would be stable enough for daily use.
Thanks
The ICS ROMs are suitable as DDs, so take your pick! Choose any of the T-Mo Leaks!
As of now, the kernels that come with the ICS ROMs are as is, so no worries there.
For Gingerbread, if you choose the Darkside ROM, it has a special kernel, made directly for the ROM, but you can still swap out for a different kernel.
With CM7, you can only use the kernel that's meant for it.
All other Gingerbread ROMs are customizable as you see fit.
I hope that helps!
Whatever ROM you choose, you can always ask more questions in its Thread!
I'd say
Dark side
Beast mod
Juggernaut
Not in any specific order
I'd lay off the ics unless your buddy is gonna update it often

I think I'll go with one of those modified ICS leaks and stay away from the AOSP until it goes into RC quality.
Mostly from CM7 he liked the custom gestures, audio tweaks and such. He really just wants good battery to last a while and has zero tolerance for lag so V6 will come in good use. I'm a port dev so I'll be able to throw in the beats libs and dsp manager.
How is the battery stats on the ICS leak?

For ICS use [ROM][ICS] :ARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.2:: [BETA2 [UVLC8][WiFi CALLING][5.06.2012]. I run it as my every day ROM and its nothing short of amazing. If you don't want ICS use [ROM] Telus SGH-T989D Stock, Rooted, Lightly Tweaked, 100% [CIQ Free] with [KERNEL] Synergy v0.10 [CK3+, Autogrouping, OC, UV, BFQ, BLN, OTG] it gets crazy battery life but is getting old.
Also be sure to wipe your phone via [TOOL]:ARKSIDE::SUPER::WIPE[ext4][2.8.2012]

Personally, I'd take an AOSP GB build over leaked TW ICS builds. RC6 CM7 is rock solid stable with no real bugs and tons of customization. Every bit as smooth as TW ICS imo.

But the issue is he wants better than stock battery life and AOSP delivers the exact opposite of that. But I'll see what he wants between all this tomorrow. For most novice users that I flash roms for its about finding a perfect balance between performance, stability, and features. So in simple terms: Noobs always want everything to be perfect and don't understand the concept of how difficult debugging roms is.

Personally. I wouldn't flash any ICS ROM's just yet. There are a few apps that I use daily that doesn't work with any of the leaked bases.
The GB ROM's that I liked were Darkside, Revenge of Macnut, Juggernaut, and Tuesday.

OK,
They want stability, performance, and battery life and I've heard about some recent superbricks in ICS for the SGS2 and Galaxy Note. So I think the best option for now is to stay on GB and go with Juggernaut 5 + Beats, DSP, V6 + whatever custom kernel. Final Decision. Or maybe ROMChicago if they feel lucky.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/tibt5/heads_up_superbrick_bug_present_in_ics_leaks_for/
Now since this should be flashed as fast as possible I've been thinking about how Samsung has ODIN and you can make custom images for it, so if I could just package the CWM, System ROM, kernel, and Blaze 4G radio into an ODIN package. Flash it in like 2 minutes, setup V6 and be done with it.
I've been searching for some guides to create packages but most of them only show how to create it as a backup from the current ROM.
personally, i love M&S's roms, especially Bombardier. It goes super will with Synergy kernel v.10, the battery life and performance is amazing!
OK, Let me just say that I'm sorry for this thread but it turns out the actual phone is a stock SGS 4G running Froyo.
I thank you all for your input anyway.

On a closing note, Again I wanna thank everyone for their responses and I review and write guides for ROMs so what I learned here won't go unused. Plus I'm sure someone else I know will want a SGS2 flashed.
This is the ROM I flashed for the SGS 4G in case anyone was wondering.

The phone got stuck in ODIN twice (guide didn't mention to uncheck repartition) and I had to use the one click unbrick to get into download mode again. At first I almost had a heart attack because I thought it need JTAG to fix. So thanks to the devs responsible for that tool.
Development for that phone is almost dead but if there's one thing I liked about the SGS1 series they had some awesome stock ROMs.
The most important lesson I learned is that using ODIN is like playing with fire: It does cool s*** but it can ruin everything.

Since ther are so many, i know theres no clear cut "Latest and Greatest" but as i stand now, i have no clue where i should be looking. So I'm asking what u guys would consider latest and greatess. I'm really looking into going as high up in the OS as possible while also having the best stability with as much working as possible. Any Idea's?

What do you prefer? For ASOP, we have some very stable ICS CM9 ROM's and Stable CM10 Rom's. The CM10 ROMs don't have a working ffc camera or 720p camcorder, but everything else seems to work. For those who like sense, Nit's Sense 4 Viper Rom is quite nice. I typically change ROM's every two weeks, so i have tried quite a lot.

Most of the op's have it spelled out exactly what to do , usually they include the kernel in the ROM
Btw : I think any of the still supported ROMs that you will find in the inc2 section are great I can't really quantify a ranking of them

Paranoid Android its a Phone/Tablet hybrid if you don't use the ffc or video that much it is my daily at the moment. "(11-4-2012)(JB)(CM10) Global 4.1.2 (4.2)" and "{10-25-2012}{Rom}{ICS} Official Global CM9" are pretty smooth running roms (I haven't had a chance to give build 3 of CM10 a try yet). "[ROM] [Port] Andromadus Mimicry 1.5 [CM9.1 Stable]" another very good ICS rom and very stable as well. Those are the ones I have been messing with the last couple of months. I think it is all in your tastes amigo. If you are a flashaholic like most of us I am sure you will try most of them.
ViperINC if you don't need BT audio. There are issues with the fact that the beats audio controls the BT audio and there is no output.
Well not just 720p but EVERYTHING working.
I was looking at DK's roms the CM10 and CM10 4.2
Are there any others (my used Dinc2 should be arriving in the 28th so i want to get ready to root it, S-OFF, and load some jelly goodness on it.
OR if i should stay on stock for everything to work properly?
Thanks everyone

If you want everything working you'll have to stay stock. Jelly Bean is great but it will always have a few issues no matter what rom you are on.
Dk cm9 works very well with only a few bugs. Working 720 camera as well.

I have the Incredible HD RLS 2 (ICS 4.0.4 Sense 3.6) ROM if you want it. It real nice and loaded with features. Only problem is that the memory is like maxed out. (cause it pretty much stock) after my first pass through I was able to free up about 60mb. I personally get rid of junk like calander, weather, etc. You can get way smaller apps for these in the app store. After I free up space it ran faster. Me personally... I like to keep mine stock (deodexed of course), debloated, and themed. Mine runs so fast! If you were to go with this I'd recommend a overclocked kernel as well!

What kernel are you suggesting to use for over clocking a sense ROM? I haven't seen anything about custom sense kernels for ICS. If you are referring to using aero's kernels, those are aosp ROMs only.

There is not any custom kernels for sense roms.

Sorry about that.. I never messed with the kernel just assumed it would help and that there was one. (Smacked myself for assuming) lol

No biggie, just wanted to be sure someone reading this didn't go trying to flash one and freak out when it didn't work and start 4 new threads asking for support.

Are cm9 roms the general go to for stability on the dinc2? I'm getting one for my wife and would like to have an idea of what to throw on it after s-off. I don't need bleeding edge but don't want her stuck on sense either.

Cm7.2 is probably safer. I think all ICS and jb ROMs have slight issues at best due to lack of source. MROM is nice. If she doesn't want to deal with occasional reboots and often flakey cameras (some are pretty stable but results vary), I would stay with gingerbread.

What are the main bugs in ics and jb? Is cm9 stable enough to use as a daily driver?

DD is subjective. I have used PAC now for a DD. It has some hiccups occasionally but I work through it.
You should read through some of the threads for more details. Not everyone has the same experience. But you may experience lag, random reboots, camera force closes or a need to clear data to make camera work periodically. You will likely have to manually input APN settings, which only has to be done once so no biggie there. You may have no problem at all. For someone who likes tinkering it isn't a big deal to do those things. But if you are looking for a ROM for someone who just wants it to work, and not have to possibly switch due to issues, and who hates resetting everything like a new phone, gingerbread is more stable. All the ICS and JB ROMs use a hacked gingerbread kernel except for sense ROMs using a stock kernel. There is no custom sense kernel for ICS or jb. And there are some nice sense ROMs on gingerbread also, with great features. And because they are what the phone is meant to run they don't really have issues. I know you say you don't want her "stuck" on sense, but she might like it. Take a look at nits sense ROMs, as well as skyraider zues. I have used zues as a fallback for quite some time. Andy bones had some nice mods for it too. Bottom line, if she doesn't mind a few possible issues try a few and see, but if she just wants it to work right, don't mess with her phone just for your sake.
If you do try some, dk's ROMs and chilly's have been good so far. Not perfect but great work considering lack of source. Hope this helps.

CM7 is rock solid. Everything works.
I'm using an aeroevan kernel and the supercharger script. Also incredicontrol to oc to 1.4GHz.
Flashed the latest Verizon radio.
Rock. Solid.
-CM7 on DInc2
We picked the phone up yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised to find it already s-offed and cm7 installed on it. I don't know about the radios on it. Probably won't mess with it since it's for my wife. Thanks for all the help.
