Shortly after I got my VZW Galaxy Nexus, I opened up the data usage monitor to change some settings. It went a little crazy, then it force closed. Now every time I try to pull up the Data Usage screen, the "Settings" app just freezes, then eventually force closes. I can get Data Usage to open, but I have to put the phone in Airplane Mode first. Once I turn Mobile Data back on, it freezes again.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions for a fix? I suppose this isn't crucial for me, but it would be nice to have it working
I have exactly the same issue. It was present with the stock Android 4.0.2 (ICL53F) and with the Revolution HD 2.1.5 after rooting.
However I figured a way to start the data usage normally (without going to Airplane mode). You have to go to Settings > More... > Mobile networks > Check off the Data enabled box
Then go back and check your traffic by clicking on Data usage
This is the only workaround I found so far, except for the Airplane mode (which is more time consuming, having in mind that you have to enter your pin afterwards and look for network).
I believe that this is an ICS bug and it should be fixed. The data usage cannot be opened while you are using your data connection, that is bs. Instead of force closing I sent few reports to Google via the phone, but i don't think they will be acknowledged when coming from a rooted phone with a custom image.
Mine works normal and I'm on stock 4.0.2.
Do you have Mobile data on?
CDMA or GSM

I figured another workround. Set a data warning and it will no longer FC. At least that worked for me. I set it at 1.6 GB. Although I have unlimited data plan I have never reached more than 1 GB of traffic anyway.

HUGE BUMP.
But is the only place I've ever seen this issue discussed.
What happens if you just can't access this screen?
Not even with Airplane mode...
I don't know what to do... and I'm on Kitkat now. Still same problem.

Even when my phone is 'idle' it seems to be communicating over 3g. Is is normal or is there something I can do, I'm looking to tweak my phone to optimize battery life.
I've already gone through the guide telling me how to optimize my battery. Does anyone have any additional tips on how to optimize battery? Thanks in advance.
Did you shut off autosync for the Facebook for HTC Sense? Seems that thing keeps trying to update I noticed that mine was running like crazy until I shut that off.
I was having same issue and found that the people app was causing data usage. After I killed it data stopped, app still runs fine when launched but seems to only happen on first boot.

I'm having the same issue, i used 300mb of data today and i really didn't even use my phone all that often. I have fresh .3 and full root with nand unlocked. Now is there an app that will monitor bandwidth usage s o i can see which app is chewing my bandwidth? As odd as it seams i think this is just a bug, i tried to capture data use when the 3g data lite was on but it showed minimal (under 60kb in 30 min)usage, its really kind of strange. for now i just turned off data.
On another note, I'm noticing something very very odd with my phone... even after i kill WIFI tethering app my pc is still connected and i can still use data, its odd.
Hello all,
I have had my G Pro a total of 13 days and have used 1.2 gig of data according to AT&T. I use Wifi wherever I can, and have set Google Play to only download updates over Wifi. I think 1.2 gig of data in 13 days is alot, especially when I am not streaming music.
Is it possible that my data connection is persisting even if Wifi is up and operational? Anyone seeing unusually high data usage on their G Pro's too?

Do you have your advanced wifi settings set up so that it is shutting the wifi off when the screen is off? This is how I have mine set to save on battery but it also means that any app that refreshes while the screen is off is using carrier data. But even so, I am only at 500 mb since May 10. Go into the settings and see which of your apps is using all of the data, maybe you have an app that is (for lack of a better term) rogue.
My data is also high, 'Android OS' was the leader in data compsumption . I turned off back up my data and Access to my location, and data has slowed the last 3 days from the Android OS section. I posted screenshots of usage in last 3 days and and 4 days before I turned those settings of.

I keep my Wifi on even when sleeping, so it shouldnt be that. Thanks though!
Every since Verizon pushed the Lollipop update to my N4, my "Mobile Data" turns back on all by itself after it has been disabled. It even turns back on when I am connected to wifi.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so can you please explain how I may fix this.
Thanks in advance.
Not exactly that but I have noticed that now I'm always on 3g when I'm usually on 4G all day long same area this is crazy
Mine is also randomly turning on Mobile Data too after the Lollipop update. I have a small data allotment with VZW, this could send me into overages.
I seen on one thread, searching through your downloaded apps to find out which ones have "change network connectivity" in the permissions. I happen to have 6 of them. Some you can disable, but it removes the updates, other you cant disable without removing it.
Another recommendation was hitting settings from the pull down menu, wifi, advanced, then uncheck the "smart network switch". Mine wasn't checked to begin with, so I'm out of ideas til I start removing apps one by one...
The data has been turning on by itself during sleep time on my Note 4. It caused the phone to use 500mb of data in one nite. My data is always off, wifi is only on when using the phone otherwise it's off too. I called Verizon and they have no clue. This is my 2nd new Note 4 for myself & my wife, nothing but problems. Think we are going to switch to anything other than a Samsung phone.
Well, I've systematically removed all 6 apps one at a time. The Youtube and Facebook apps, I was only able to disable them instead of removing them completely. In the end, the phone still turns on Mobile Data by itself. This must be something internal with Lollipop. I have a small data allowance and I'm afraid its going to go over simply because it wont stay OFF even with WiFi available!!
I would call customer service and have them ship you out a replacement. This is our 3rd phone and hopefully it will work as it should. Good luck
Outcast,
I've had my Note4 since it was released in November. It didn't have this problem with 4.4 Kitkat. It's something new with Lollipop and I doubt a new phone would solve this problem, could be wrong.
How involved is it to go back to Kitkat?
I'm not chancing voiding my warranty. They replaced my phones by them and not by request. Our phones get hot and get a warning then shuts down, apps close constantly and the phones consistently reboot on their own. Then the data turning on by itself. The other problems I don't think are software based but hardware failures. The data can very well be software related.

I have the same problem and i used up so much of my data when i am at home where the wifi connects automatically on everything else. On kit kat this never happened and i am attempting a downgrade so you might want to try that.
I was having the same problem with mine. I also live on the edge of 4g area, so it was constantly swapping between 3g and 4g. In addition to using some data it was killing my battery swapping between 3g and 4g. Using almost 10% per hour when not being used. I disabled most of the verizon stuff, support and protection, Verizon navigator, caller name id, message+, and verizon location. I turned off facebook location reporting in the app settings, and disabled google location. I did all these a couple at a time and would reboot to see if it fixed the problem and after all those were done i rebooted and wiped the cache and the prblem was gone. I turned google location back on so far and its still working the way it is supposed to. It shows a greyed out 3g symbol and my battery life is much better. My phone sat off the charger all night and only dropped 4% and in 5 hours of moderate use its down to 77% left. Wish i knew exactly which app was causing the problem to help you out better but hopefully you can try those apps and settings and get the same results.
Well it worked for about 3 days, but this morning data and wifi were both running again.
Data usage Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Been having the same problem even when I disconnect data ten or fifteen minutes later data is back on. And I've noticed even if I am connected to Wi-Fi data trumps it and I end up using a ton of DATA when I've been connected to Wi-Fi all day, getting seriously upset cause I never used this much data before.
I have same problem with my Note3 running Lollipop. Have tried every suggestion I can find to turn off data, but it is still runs, unless I am on wifi. Data is set to off, 4g symbol in notification bar is greyed out, but data is still on. I have found forums all over the Web with other people with this problem, but no solution yet. My phone is unlocked but not rooted.
I have a new LG G3 I bought last month from Woot.
Its my first time using FreedomPop as a provider coming from my Boost G3
Not used phone much but every time i do it keeps getting disconnected for my WiFi whaich had no problems with my Boost setup.
After reading some other thread I found I tried all those fixes to no avail.
I really need to get this phone to stay connected to my WiFi as FreedomPop relies on it greatly as in I cant use the free plan as I been eating up too much of the 500mb of data allowed.
Those are added reasons for me to use my WiFi connection as much as possible.
One thing I notice is when WiFi is working is it looks like a ! added to my wifi icon and assuming that showing a problem but no clue what it is.
So after 5 or 10 mins wifi icon gone I go to settings wifi it shows wifi disconnected. I re enable it wash rise repeat. Any help be great TIA!
Heres a google with some of the fixes I tried which did not help....

I did what setting there might help?
I did seemingly fix the problem at least for now as this problem seems to come and go as I dont use phone that often and only then I see problem is there.
I had to reset my phone which I am not sure if this method works for other carriers than FreedomPop but I think it does.

The problem is back phone will disconnects after a few mins after connecting and watching phone disconnect.
What different this time around is I wanted to turn off my data connection as I kept getting huge data downloads that I been trying to avoid so I can see if I can use the FreedomPop free services which consist of 500mb of data and 500 messages and 200 minutes of talk time.
My old Boost phone never used much data at all so know it was working fine with that setup as I am alaways connected to my own WiFi and only time I would need to use data is when I go to Drs office once a month.
I should be able to make this all work fine for my situation if I can stay hooked up to my WiFi but its pretty annoying and wasting my data when it wont stay connected .
Everything was working fine on Friday.
I noticed on Sunday that mobile data wasn't up but I was in a low-signal area so didn't think much of it.
I can do calls and SMS, the data bearer just isn't coming up.
I've tried various resets, toggles, etc. I have had the phone off for several minutes. Nothing seems to help.
I got a logcat but it's not telling me anything.
Guides online don't seem to be written for people who know the difference between network registration and a data bearer.
Anyone have any clues???

Since the October update, mobile data speeds for me have been completely down. The 4g field strength is fine, but its actual speed is slowing down completely. I have a Xiaomi MI A2 Lite 3/32 phone. So far, I've had nothing wrong with him. It reminds me that battery usage has also increased since the upgrade. If read by competent, PLEASE fix this bug as soon as possible !!

It's not just slow, the bearer doesn't come up so the speed icon does not show.
I have the 10.0.14.0 fastboot image so I might try downgrading tomorrow. But it was working after the 10.0.15.0 update...
I got a "Phone" (dialer) update in Friday but I'd be surprised if that's part of data bearer bringup.
I've used modems in embedded systems before. I just don't know how the android stack works or where/if it logs more than logcat.
Err... I have mobile data again.
Since I posted last night I left my phone in airplane mode overnight. It wasn't going this morning.
I did a power cycle and took the sim card out/in again. Once the system had come up my wallpaper was bad (something I have noticed occasionally from EdXposed). I rebooted and when the phone came up, my mobile data came up too!
Very confused.
In case anyone else is trying to debug this... I came across a command I was not previously aware of.
It turns out radio events are separate from the main (default) logcat buffer, so you have to request them specifically.
Code:
logcat -b radio
Since my phone is currently working, I can only say that this seems to show extra details. I'll definitely give this a go the next time my phone stops being able to connect to mobile data.
all of a sudden my mobile data has stopped working.
it's with android 10, 2020 oct 1 update, and it appeared suspiciously close to the update (it's 11-11 now, and it started after a reboot).
below is the logcat -b radio of turning on/off mobile data, maybe it's useful for someone.
it's still not working for me.
damn, i'm denied posting the log... no external links for new users.

Every time I do an OTA, I put my phone into airplane mode (so that the network does not come up/down multiple times) and I always do a power off and power on (not just a reboot) before I enable the radio again. I haven't had this issue again.
I would suggest putting your phone into airplane mode overnight. In the morning, turn it off and on (not just a reboot) and then enable the radio again.
If that doesn't help you can maybe DM me the radio logs? (I don't know if DMs can contain attachments)

thank you very much!
it has finally worked for me, although i didn't keep it in airplane mode overnight, because i forgot it on (it was playing music on bluetooth... )
what i did:
put phone in airplane mode
shut down the phone (not just a reboot, that didn't help)
restart after a few seconds
