[Q] Busted G2 - Need restore point - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I have a G2 with the latest stable CyanogenMod (7.1.0).
My touchscreen no longer works. I need to send in my phone for repair. I'm attempting to return my phone to stock before sending it in.
The process I need to do this is already discussed in detail here
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/36215-back-to-stock-rom-for-warranty-issues/
and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971
But...
I need to enable the USB debugging mode on my phone so I can use ADB to complete the process described in the links above. I cannot do this with my busted touchscreen.
Is it possible for someone to post a ClockworkRecoveryMod restore point with the USB debugging already enabled?
I don't know if this is even possible, but it's the only thing I can think of.
Thanks in advance for your help!

[Q] Back to S-ON without USB/ADB

Hi guys,
I've got a big issue with my Desire HD. currently on ARHD 6.3.1.
It seems, I've got a USB Bricked Device. I tried several roms, but with no one I was able to establish a connection with a pc. The DHD always only charges and is not detected by my pc. I also tried several cables and pcs.
With this, for my opinion hardware defect, I've been at a official HTC Service Store.
They looked at it and told me they cannot do anything as long as I don't have S-ON.
At this point I am searching for a method to get back to S-ON without ADB, because the USB port does not work as well.
I'm gonna get the official RUU to the phone via PD96IMG on the SD-Card. But if I understand the, for my feeling 100 threads I've read, right, the phone stays on S-OFF and i only found guides to get S-ON via ADB.
So, hopefully someone can help me, because a not working USB port is really annoying!
Greets and thanks to all devs for the great work on DHD
Michael
PS: Waht do you think, can we port this Guide to our DHD?

Sorry posted by mistake. please delete
Is there really nobody with a good idea?
I know Gene Pool has a tool for the inspire I've used with no issues ..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208507
Google gave me this for DHD ,,, I've never used it so you may want to google more for DHD S-ON, and it's all at your own risk I dunno if you'll brick or what.....

@Hydro thanks for that advice.
I'm gonna PM him if I can use it some way for my DHD.
I will post my results.

I would do more googling and no PM,,, those guys are pretty busy, plus I wouldn't ask if he can use the inspire files on the DHD...
Yes I can understand that. That I cannot use the Inspire files for my DHD is clear for me. But perhaps I only have to change zip or something like that.
I am googling for my problem now for about 2 month.
Perhaps I'm too silly, but with no results.
I only found guides that use the ADB via USB.
what region are you in anyways?
I am from Europe / Germany
i re-read your post... first, you've tried USB in different computers I'm assuming? And you've tried different cables? And you've verified you have the right drivers installed and you DO NOT have HTC software installed. Are you running everything elevated? Meaning as administrator if you're using Windows 7? Is your Virus Software uninstalled?
Also have you even tried to flash a stock P98IMG.ZIP from the root of your SD card?
First, thanks for your help and interest.
So, for my opinion I tried everything:
different cables, computers, USB-ports.
Yes, I think I had the right drivers. Tried also everything I found in the web.
It definitly seems the USB port is bricked on hardware.
The guy of the HTC service store also told me they often have devices with hardware defects on USB parts.
Flashing via PD98IMG I have not done yet, because everywhere it is said the phone stays on S-OFF after flashing it. And this is sadly not enough for them to repair it on warranty. They only may repair it with S-ON.
Of course, they also repair if I pay for it.
so if your phone is bricked i would try to get it working first,, before worrying about USB stuff. then you can troubleshoot the USB stuff later... just my opinion. Keep searching for s-on zip ,, it's out there if you dig hard enough,, I did a couple searches and didn't see it without the tool.

Don't think he means his phone is actually bricked. He's using the term incorrectly. Just that his USB doesn't work
What about wireless adb? That could work. I don't know and am skeptical myself, but give it a try.

You could always try ADB over wifi widget from the market, don't know how useful it is as I've never tried it.

Yes, you're right. My phone is not completely bricked, just the USB doesn't work.
I have read "USB bricked" that often, that i tought it is right. sorry for that confusion.
Thanks for your hints at the wifi adb version.
Is there someone with experience in that?
I will give it a try...
I assume it will work as I've got the ADB over wifi feature built into the rom I'm using, so there should be some truth to it. I'm running redemption ics alpha

For my understanding, as not beeing a dev.
I installed adbwireless from market, activated it and established a connection to the phone via cmd. (connected to 192.168.100.24:5555)
Is it now possible to give this open connection to a tool like "Advanced Ace Hack Kit" or "Easy Radio tool"?
Sorry for that noob question.
That's the thing tough not sure if you can connect to them. You might have to run the commands manually. You should stop by the hack kit irc channel and ask attn1 if its possible
So this may be a dumb question but can you mount USB in recovery partition? I've seen the error where people can't mount their USB drives. Fix is to reformat the micro usb.

Turning HTC Desire Z completely into stock

Hey
My Desire Z's screen/digitalizer has compeltely gone crazy. I called HTC and well they told me that I had 2 years (Im at 1 and 1/2 I think) so I can send it for warrently. Obviously Im rooted, modded, S-OFF, etc. everything.
A LARGE detail: For some reason, USB mass storage doesn't work on my phone. Its another reason why I want to go stock and check if it is a hardware issue or software.
One of their tests was safe mode which the same thing happened (detected touches all over the place). Another test, was to turn it into factory which is what I want to ask now How I turn my HTC Desire Z to COMPLETE stock again? I do want to have the possibility to again unlock the bootloader and root it, which I think is possible but Ive heard of phones that say once you upgrade, its impossible.
Another thing, HTC may (because Ive read it on these forums) offer me another phone. I will refuse this because I dont care if they offer me the Nexus 7 or a Galaxy S3 (saying impossible things, I know); I want a phone with a QWERTY keyboard and since they dont have a newer model, I want mine back. In case they say this (because they cant (dont want to) fix my phone) can I refuse this and get my phone back? Just want to make sure about that....
Right now, my main thing is getting this unrooted, relocking the bootloader, S-ON, and going completely stock, so HTC doesnt say anything about it (just in case)
Thank to all
Also, i dont know if this is a ROM issue or a hardware issue, but ADB/USB mass storage doesnt work for me so I have to use a Wifi FTP server to transfer all the files I need....
Another reason I need a stock ROM: Test this and test the USB storage/ADB hardware/software.
I thought there was a sticky for this kind of question?
---------- Post added at 04:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:20 AM ----------
Guess it wasn't a sticky but rather the wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Vision#Unrooting_and_Returning_to_Stock
If only the screen is having issues, you might be able to get at least the original bootloader/recovery on there (thereby returning the part that counts back to stock).

I saw your guide but it requires ADB which (I've added it in the original post now) is not avaliable on myy device for some reason.
The guide links to a stock rom with adb pre-enabled. So if you have the drivers and adb set up on your computer you should be good to go.

But like I mentioned right now, USB mass storage and ADB do not work. They are set up on my PC but they do not see the phone. Thats why I cant do it with something that has to do with ADB.
Anyone have any idea how to do this?
Ifs it too much, maybe I can put a stock ROM on it and unroot that (leaving S-OFF)
adb should work fine, my guess it isnt set up right. you say when you connect your phone to pc you can only charge? no usb mount/mass storage, no adb? your phone will charge? your sd card works but can be read by phone and not by pc via usb?
is this all correct?
either your usb port is bad, your usb cable is bad or you dont have adb set up correctly

yes, i can only charge. no usb mount/ass storage.......my card is perfect too.
is it possible there is something wrong with the rom/kernel im using? i mean a bad usb port seems......dificult.
if it is bad, i might as well take the warrenty as well but i need to run stock to avoid anything stupid from HTC.
my best guess is you need to uninstall the drivers alocated to your phone. then make sure you have proper ones on your computer. then when you plug jin your phone manualy point to the proper drivers

But I followed your advice anyhow. I plugged it into a freshly formatted PC and it only charges. Nothing else.
Can someone please help me get back to stock and unroot it without ADB? I do not mean this in a mean way or anything it is just impossible on my phone

Have to go download the Drivers for the phone, otherwise the PC will only see it for charging or potentially USB mass storage.

Thats the thing: It doesnt see it as a USB mass storage device. And yes, the setting to detect it as such is indeed checked. I also reflashed the phone to another ROM to start clean: Nothing.
So then, my touchscreen AND be USB port have gone both bad. What is a stock (with Sense since the Desire Z comes with Sense) Gingerbread ROM that I can flash on this S-OFF phone? I need to send it ASAP as I dont want more time to pass.

There's a few Stock roms in the forum, but it depends on who your carrier is, i.e.: T-Mobile Stock is going to be pretty branded with T-Mobile.
Also I'm not sure if shipping it with an ENG S-OFF will give them an excuse or not to support you (I think even with SHIP S-OFF they might say something).
---------- Post added at 04:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:37 AM ----------
By the way since you said your touch screen might be bad, and you are S-OFF check this guide out (Something a lot of people used to get their phone to full stock even with a dead digitizer for RMA purposes) :

I know you are trying to help and thanks a lot but I mentioned a few times that ADB does not work because my phone is not detected. I believe the data portion of the USB port has broken
I would need a Gingerbread Sense ROM that is closest to a OEM Desire Z. Since putting S-ON isn't a option due to the broken ADB I have no choice.
And ****, I just notice something else. The VOID sticker is broken on the screws. God I hope there are some on eBay....
Yes, great news. There are. Thank god I realized it before sending it off. I opened it just in case I could see some cable not right and fix the screen this way.
Anywa back on topic: Closest stock Gingerbread Sense ROM?
The stickers are problably going to take a while to get here.
if adb won't work (did it ever for you?) then your best bet is to fully brick your phone as long as you are sure when you send it in its warrantiable, it will be hard if not impossible to go back to stock without adb, there may be a way through terminal, you can go to irc #g2root and see if someone there can help

The issues continue......

Hey,
Made a few posts relating to my issues with the galaxy nexus and it not charging etc....
Now I have contacted Samsung and they said send it for repair, not this leaves me in a bit of a pickle seeing as the phone has been rooted since day one.
The issue comes as the phone does not respond to being plugged into the computer despite all drivers being installed.
Has any bright person got any idea's to removing the root on the handset and re-flashing stock .img without the need of adb and fastboot seeing as the phone just comes up as not recognised, probably due to the issues with the USB port on the handset (see initial problem...)
Don't really want to send it back to Samsung rooted as they will just send it back saying its my fault even though its not and its a hardware issue.... not software.
Any advice would be great,
J
P.s. Had a check around the internet on several Google groups about this issue and the only conclusion is send back to Samsung or get a new USB port for the phone from Ebay.
Just flash a stock ROM in recovery then use this app to lock bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27878074 and then unroot (SuperSU has this option).
You are my friend is why i love XDA , thanks for the advice.

See this post for a much better explanation

Essentially that tells you to lock bootloader and then use mobile odin to flash a stock ROM.

[Q] Backup with no access to screen

Had a few questions here. I researched and found this tool. However, I can't post in the thread to ask questions because of my noobtasticness and I searched and couldn't find a similar problem elsewhere.
My first question is, can I use the root and backup tools in the toolkit with no access to the screen whatsoever? I damaged my phone and the touch and lcd screens aren't functioning, but I can plug it in and access memory via usb.
Secondly, I've received the replacement phone. Is there an order I should do all of this in? My first guess is to root/backup the old phone (if possible), then activate the new phone, then root/restore on the new phone. Does that sound about right?

Thanks, I found that thread too actually, but this phone isn't rooted. I was mainly contemplating root, if it's an option, as a way to take advantage of the more expansive toolset/backup options available to rooted phones in the toolkit. I just wasn't sure if rooting was an option for a phone with a broken screen.

Awesome, thanks. I checked on that post and someone responded about having usb debugging on...which I don't. So it looks like I may have to just do the straight backup without rooting unfortunately. :/
You don't need root to use my method, you just need a custom recovery...and remember NOT to boot into the system at all, only recovery or else the stock recovery will be reflashed

Followed the instructions on the post, and when I get to "./adb devices", I get "Permission denied" in terminal. This is with booting into recovery.
That means that the adb binary on your computer doesn't have executable permissions. Nothing to do with the phone.

Okay, I agreed ... but, let's try to be helpful to OP whose native language is obviously not English.
I believed s/he is trying to say the device is doing an endless boot-looping and cannot get into Recovery - looking for help from us here.
OP, what carrier or home system (CDMA or GSM) are you using the phone on? Did it worked before? What were you doing with the device before this happened - trying to flash a new/different ROM, kernel or radio, etc. ??
You will need to learn and use ADB, read the sticky in this Forum and/or get someone familiar to help you with it. In the unlikely situation of being on Verizonwireless CDMA system, you can flash the RUU file and restore it to stock (unrooted) and start over - after getting it activated again & restore all the factory settings.

It sounded like you are a complete newcomer to all this and you are going to need extra help to avoid bricking your device completely into a useless paperweight.
ADB is Android Debug Bridge, see the "Wiki" section above here on XDA and read about it, you can also google for details & how to.
Please answer, was your DI2 working before? Is (was) it activated on Verizonwireless? Was it working before this endless boot-looping?

Here is a dropbox link to the OEM/stock RUU file released from VZW that I've saved & restored to dropbox from my collection - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u....01.1111_NV_VZW1.92_release_225831_signed.exe
Please download this to your PC (linked file will be removed after 72 hours) - and prepare your DI2 by making sure it's 75% to 100% charged first. Make backup copies of your mSD card to a safe location, just in case.
Next, power on your DI2 and connect it to your PC via the micro-USB cable, then run or launch this RUU file. Read the warnings and click thru to run it - it will flash & restore your phone to factory fresh, stock condition and result in your DI2 being UN-rooted again. However, it will not change or affect SIM unlocking (if it was already done) - and, the process should take about 10 minutes or so, and when it is finished, power down & reboot the smartphone - and it should take you to the initial Startup/Setup Screen menu - follow it and get it activated again, including downloading the latest PRL from OTA.
When it is finished, you will need to follow the steps & guides to root it, install a custom recovery and SU, etc. Then, you can install your choice of custom ROM and/or kernet, etc.
The above approach is more fool-proof than using ADB to flash a different bootloader and to try to restore it to working conditions etc. with the tradeoff of losing root, which can be easily reversed again.
Let me know if you decided to go ahead and the results/outcome, etc.
Option #2 - If, however, you do not want to lose root and you can boot your device into Custom Recovery (CWM - not stock recovery) - use this link here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599767
Follow it & download the "Stock" PG32IMG from CS, copy it to your mSD card, boot into Recovery & flash the zip file - it SHOULD get your device backup and running again (it might NOT, I haven't done this in a while) and as long as you don't need to mess with the bootloader again (which might be corrupted or damaged, etc.) - you are good to go. Once it's up & running, you can restore & setup your APPS again - and/or install other custom ROM of your own choice, at your own risk, of course. But, make a CWM Backup first before doing so in between.
Good Luck & Regards !
