Hey
My Desire Z's screen/digitalizer has compeltely gone crazy. I called HTC and well they told me that I had 2 years (Im at 1 and 1/2 I think) so I can send it for warrently. Obviously Im rooted, modded, S-OFF, etc. everything.
A LARGE detail: For some reason, USB mass storage doesn't work on my phone. Its another reason why I want to go stock and check if it is a hardware issue or software.
One of their tests was safe mode which the same thing happened (detected touches all over the place). Another test, was to turn it into factory which is what I want to ask now How I turn my HTC Desire Z to COMPLETE stock again? I do want to have the possibility to again unlock the bootloader and root it, which I think is possible but Ive heard of phones that say once you upgrade, its impossible.
Another thing, HTC may (because Ive read it on these forums) offer me another phone. I will refuse this because I dont care if they offer me the Nexus 7 or a Galaxy S3 (saying impossible things, I know); I want a phone with a QWERTY keyboard and since they dont have a newer model, I want mine back. In case they say this (because they cant (dont want to) fix my phone) can I refuse this and get my phone back? Just want to make sure about that....
Right now, my main thing is getting this unrooted, relocking the bootloader, S-ON, and going completely stock, so HTC doesnt say anything about it (just in case)
Thank to all
Also, i dont know if this is a ROM issue or a hardware issue, but ADB/USB mass storage doesnt work for me so I have to use a Wifi FTP server to transfer all the files I need....
Another reason I need a stock ROM: Test this and test the USB storage/ADB hardware/software.
I thought there was a sticky for this kind of question?

Guess it wasn't a sticky but rather the wiki:

If only the screen is having issues, you might be able to get at least the original bootloader/recovery on there (thereby returning the part that counts back to stock).
Check my guide for returning to stock

I saw your guide but it requires ADB which (I've added it in the original post now) is not avaliable on myy device for some reason.
The guide links to a stock rom with adb pre-enabled. So if you have the drivers and adb set up on your computer you should be good to go.

But like I mentioned right now, USB mass storage and ADB do not work. They are set up on my PC but they do not see the phone. Thats why I cant do it with something that has to do with ADB.
Anyone have any idea how to do this?
Ifs it too much, maybe I can put a stock ROM on it and unroot that (leaving S-OFF)
adb should work fine, my guess it isnt set up right. you say when you connect your phone to pc you can only charge? no usb mount/mass storage, no adb? your phone will charge? your sd card works but can be read by phone and not by pc via usb?
is this all correct?
either your usb port is bad, your usb cable is bad or you dont have adb set up correctly

yes, i can only charge. no usb mount/ass storage.......my card is perfect too.
is it possible there is something wrong with the rom/kernel im using? i mean a bad usb port seems......dificult.
if it is bad, i might as well take the warrenty as well but i need to run stock to avoid anything stupid from HTC.
my best guess is you need to uninstall the drivers alocated to your phone. then make sure you have proper ones on your computer. then when you plug jin your phone manualy point to the proper drivers

Ok..I already mentioned this.......
But I followed your advice anyhow. I plugged it into a freshly formatted PC and it only charges. Nothing else.
Can someone please help me get back to stock and unroot it without ADB? I do not mean this in a mean way or anything it is just impossible on my phone
Nothing at all??

Have to go download the Drivers for the phone, otherwise the PC will only see it for charging or potentially USB mass storage.

Thats the thing: It doesnt see it as a USB mass storage device. And yes, the setting to detect it as such is indeed checked. I also reflashed the phone to another ROM to start clean: Nothing.
So then, my touchscreen AND be USB port have gone both bad. What is a stock (with Sense since the Desire Z comes with Sense) Gingerbread ROM that I can flash on this S-OFF phone? I need to send it ASAP as I dont want more time to pass.

There's a few Stock roms in the forum, but it depends on who your carrier is, i.e.: T-Mobile Stock is going to be pretty branded with T-Mobile.
Also I'm not sure if shipping it with an ENG S-OFF will give them an excuse or not to support you (I think even with SHIP S-OFF they might say something).
---------- Post added at 04:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:37 AM ----------
By the way since you said your touch screen might be bad, and you are S-OFF check this guide out (Something a lot of people used to get their phone to full stock even with a dead digitizer for RMA purposes) :

I know you are trying to help and thanks a lot but I mentioned a few times that ADB does not work because my phone is not detected. I believe the data portion of the USB port has broken
I would need a Gingerbread Sense ROM that is closest to a OEM Desire Z. Since putting S-ON isn't a option due to the broken ADB I have no choice.
And ****, I just notice something else. The VOID sticker is broken on the screws. God I hope there are some on eBay....
Yes, great news. There are. Thank god I realized it before sending it off. I opened it just in case I could see some cable not right and fix the screen this way.
Anywa back on topic: Closest stock Gingerbread Sense ROM?
The stickers are problably going to take a while to get here.
if adb won't work (did it ever for you?) then your best bet is to fully brick your phone as long as you are sure when you send it in its warrantiable, it will be hard if not impossible to go back to stock without adb, there may be a way through terminal, you can go to irc #g2root and see if someone there can help

So my Evo charger port has been broken for awhile and I finally have the chance to take it in tomorrow to see if they will repair it under warranty. I obviously have to unroot it for them to do this, since I'm on CM7 right now.
So I'm a little confused - I flash the PCIMG to unroot but after I need to go to a stock sense rom. The stock rom threads have been saying if I flash them, I won't be able to re-root my phone. They will probably just repair my phone so I want to be able to root it afterwards.
So what am I suppose to do in this situation? They said they would fix my phone in under and hour if there is a problem.

you will be able to re root again after you get it worked on, no worries. All of the Evo software that is currently available is rootable.
Unrooting is easy, and basically two steps. First, if you rooted with unrevoked, or ever flashed the Unrevoked Forever tool, then you first need to flash the unrevoked S on tool. That will turn your S on. After you flash it, go to the bootloader, and confirm that your S is On. Once that's set, download the PC36IMG, and put it on the main directory of your sd card (not in any folders) Be sure it's named exactly PC36IMG (capitals matter, must be all caps). THen boot into the bootloader, and at that piont the bootloader should find the PC36IMG file, and ask you to update. Press Volume up to say yes. Once it's done flashing, when you reboot you'll be back on a stock sense rom, s on, and ready to take it in for service. You'll be able to root again afterwards using any of the current available methods. Good luck.

unfortunately there (to my knowledge) isnt a way to "repair" your charging port since this is a known issue with the HTC EVO.. i know because I work for Sprint. Unless they have someone there that can sauder your port back on or anything like that your probably just going to get a new phone. what i would tell you to do is unroot it, let them order a new device or swap one out and root that one..just some food for thought.

You must work in a call center.
Evo charging port durability is a known issue. Since it is hardware, a technician cannot reject the device due to being rooted, only if it is a software issue.
You're going to get a new phone, they cannot fix the port as others have mentioned. Don't worry about how easy it will be to root again, as you'll have a different phone anyway.
No i don't actually. and yes I do realize that unless its a SW issue we will work on it. I have done it many a times. If we end up having to swap the device out it must come back with the same SW as it left when you first bought it. Its just our M&P. some of our rf testers will not read rooted devices which is why we don't.. We are required to test every aspect of the device from radio to Screen.

Hello Everybody,
my sd-card doesn't work anymore, but i haven't a usb-brick. I tried all manuals
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 and many more but i am sure that i have a hardware defect.
My problem is, that i have unbranded and rooted my desire and cannot undo it because my sd card doesnot work. In order to get my warranty i have to install original Telekom rom or brick my phone.
Is there any possibilty to brick phones without sd card?
I have leedroid rom, bootlooder 0.93 and clockwork 2.5.0.7
Thanks a lot,

You really have no idea what you are talking about do you?
First try to check for errors and format the card with gparted. If you want to unroot it use a ruu.

Perhaps you didn't understand me.
My Phone has definetly a hardware error. At the beginning i thought that i had a usb brick http: // android.modaco.com/content/ htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/309939/usb-brick-rickrolled-b0rked-fixed/
However i haven't a usb brick and the tutorial doesn't work for me.
In order to get my phone repaired by my vendor i have to rebuild the phones delivery status or brick it. Due to my sd card isn't working i cann't unroot and rebrand my phone. Consequently my only opportunity is the brick my phone, but i don't know how to brick it without sd card.
Thanks
Perhaps you misunderstood the previous question.
Have you checked to see if it is the SD-Card itself not working? Like, putting a different one in, or indeed checking the partitions via gParted?
It may not be the phone at all.
Just check it. It's a process called troubleshooting.

Actually, I think what that person wants, to to brick his phone on purpose, so he can send it in for repair without getting in trouble.
He doesn't wish to fix it, cause he's mucked it up too far.
Here is a good suggestion, pull the battery, and toss it into the microwave for about 10 seconds or so.
Or leave it on, and toss it in the toilet for awhile. Then dry it in the oven on very low heat for an hour or so.
Connecting a wire directly from the wall outlet to the USB port will work also.
My usb port broke on my beloved evo (literally came off the board and took the traces with it), unrooted to take it to sprint, including turning s-off. Sprint wants to charge me a bunch of money to fix it, regardless of it being a known problem with the evo's. I decided to keep my evo for a little longer, I can't stand the 2.2 rom I rolled back to. I can get root on my evo I just need to turn s-off, but without a usb port, I don't have any connectivity.
Is there a way to turn s-off without debugging it via computer? Any help is encouraged and very much appreciated.
Thanks, and I am sorry if this is a repost.

If you're s-on and don't have a recovery, then you're probably screwed. You can unroot without a usb port, but I don't believe that you can root without one.
If you're still on 2.2 then you may have some luck depending on your hboot version. Search around for some of the older root methods. If they're compatible with your hboot then there may be something that you can do. Considering that z4root will give you temp root, there may be some way to get s-off from there.
If you have insurance on your phone then you may want to try another store - you may get someone that'll give you a refurb. If the port was just loose then you would be in good shape, but since it's broken off they usually won't replace it without charging the $100 deductible.

I have 2.2, and I am bootloader 2.10, I was thinking about doing z4root to get temp root, then trying and pushing the unrevoked3 package through via adbwirelesss. I have my whole phone setup on my sd card, I just desperately need to get s-off to be able to fully root. Are there any utilities to flash in hboot to give you s-off?
I have insurance on the phone, they didn't enter anything in the system about me breaking my phone, I am just probably going to tell them someone stole it and trade them the $100 for a refurb.

I have all of the files on my sd card already, unfortunately I can't flash them without a recovery, cant flash a recovery without s-off. The unrevoked3 is an .exe meant to be used by a computer via adb. They did have an .apk that they have since stopped supporting, it errors out when I try it that way.
Shameless self bump, my efforts have failed, and I have explored multiple avenues, but I have yet to solve it, any help is still much appreciated
Hi guys,
I've got a big issue with my Desire HD. currently on ARHD 6.3.1.
It seems, I've got a USB Bricked Device. I tried several roms, but with no one I was able to establish a connection with a pc. The DHD always only charges and is not detected by my pc. I also tried several cables and pcs.
With this, for my opinion hardware defect, I've been at a official HTC Service Store.
They looked at it and told me they cannot do anything as long as I don't have S-ON.
At this point I am searching for a method to get back to S-ON without ADB, because the USB port does not work as well.
I'm gonna get the official RUU to the phone via PD96IMG on the SD-Card. But if I understand the, for my feeling 100 threads I've read, right, the phone stays on S-OFF and i only found guides to get S-ON via ADB.
So, hopefully someone can help me, because a not working USB port is really annoying!
Greets and thanks to all devs for the great work on DHD
Michael
PS: Waht do you think, can we port this Guide to our DHD?

I would do more googling and no PM,,, those guys are pretty busy, plus I wouldn't ask if he can use the inspire files on the DHD...
Yes I can understand that. That I cannot use the Inspire files for my DHD is clear for me. But perhaps I only have to change zip or something like that.
I am googling for my problem now for about 2 month.
Perhaps I'm too silly, but with no results.
I only found guides that use the ADB via USB.
what region are you in anyways?
I am from Europe / Germany
i re-read your post... first, you've tried USB in different computers I'm assuming? And you've tried different cables? And you've verified you have the right drivers installed and you DO NOT have HTC software installed. Are you running everything elevated? Meaning as administrator if you're using Windows 7? Is your Virus Software uninstalled?
Also have you even tried to flash a stock P98IMG.ZIP from the root of your SD card?
First, thanks for your help and interest.
So, for my opinion I tried everything:
different cables, computers, USB-ports.
Yes, I think I had the right drivers. Tried also everything I found in the web.
It definitly seems the USB port is bricked on hardware.
The guy of the HTC service store also told me they often have devices with hardware defects on USB parts.
Flashing via PD98IMG I have not done yet, because everywhere it is said the phone stays on S-OFF after flashing it. And this is sadly not enough for them to repair it on warranty. They only may repair it with S-ON.
Of course, they also repair if I pay for it.
so if your phone is bricked i would try to get it working first,, before worrying about USB stuff. then you can troubleshoot the USB stuff later... just my opinion. Keep searching for s-on zip ,, it's out there if you dig hard enough,, I did a couple searches and didn't see it without the tool.

Don't think he means his phone is actually bricked. He's using the term incorrectly. Just that his USB doesn't work

Yes, you're right. My phone is not completely bricked, just the USB doesn't work.
I have read "USB bricked" that often, that i tought it is right. sorry for that confusion.
Thanks for your hints at the wifi adb version.
Is there someone with experience in that?
I will give it a try...
I assume it will work as I've got the ADB over wifi feature built into the rom I'm using, so there should be some truth to it. I'm running redemption ics alpha

For my understanding, as not beeing a dev.
I installed adbwireless from market, activated it and established a connection to the phone via cmd. (connected to 192.168.100.24:5555)
Is it now possible to give this open connection to a tool like "Advanced Ace Hack Kit" or "Easy Radio tool"?
Sorry for that noob question.
That's the thing tough not sure if you can connect to them. You might have to run the commands manually. You should stop by the hack kit irc channel and ask attn1 if its possible
So this may be a dumb question but can you mount USB in recovery partition? I've seen the error where people can't mount their USB drives. Fix is to reformat the micro usb.
So I'm new to the HTC One, (Literally, just got it 25 minutes ago) and coming from the Note 2 about 6 months ago, was the last time I rooted and Rom'ed a phone. Since then, I have had a completely stock Galaxy S4, and since I was unable to ROM it up, I stopped caring. Now that I just got the HTC One, I searched up the forums and see things from Bootloader isnt unlocked, to S off, etc. I am so lost, and I'm unsure where to begin. I just honestly want to find out the steps in which I need to install a ROM, since its been so long. I read the stickies, and I don't understand what is the difference between S Off, Bootloader etc. I dont even know what S Off is! lol
Thank you for helping me out, and just point me to the right direction of what to do first. Please don't be snobby, I have searched, I just dont see what you have to do first, and so on.
Also, is there a way to do any of this on a Mac? If not, I can use my laptop, but just prefer on my mac.
Thank you again!
ONLY FLASH ROMS YOU FIND IN THE VERIZON HTC ONE SECTION - roms you get from the general htc one section or ANY OTHER section will not work and will cause you major headaches. Read through this Q&A section and you will see what happens when you try and flash things you shouldnt.
Before the first thing you do you need to get the adb/fastboot stuff download the sdk from here - Android SDK - the main things you will need from the zip file you download is the "platform - tools" folder. This will give you adb and fastboot. I would suggest renaming the folder to something simple and moving it to the root of the C: drive. Any file you send to your phone via adb or fastboot needs to be in this folder.
Well the first thing you will need to do is figure out what software version you are running. To do this you need to boot your phone into the bootloader. The bootloader is a special part of the phone where you get access to fastboot, you use fastboot to flash things like recoveries, boot/system and such images as well, you also can get to the RUU tool from fastboot. To boot into the bootloader I find it easiest to power down the phone completely, once completely powered off press and hold the volume down button and power button until you get to the boot loader
Here is an image of the bootloader screen - http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/04/att-one-bootloader-unlocked.jpg
In the bootloader you use the volume buttons to move up and down and the power button to select.
The software version of your phone is the number next to the "OS-" in the bootloader screen it will be "OS-1.10.605.x". Once you know what software version you have, download the rumrunner tool - [s-off] rumrunner s-off for Verizon HTC One - READ the post more then once and make sure you follow the instructions exactly, with any luck you should get s-off without much trouble.
S-Off means you can change any aspect of your phone, this is a double sided sword because once s-off have more ways to turn your awesome phone into a fancy desk paperweight
Unlocked Bootloader - this is for people who unlocked there phones via htcdev, the phone is not s-off so you can not do things like install custom kernels but you do get the ability to install custom recoveries.
Custom Recovery - The tool you use to flash roms, backup your current rom, wipe your phone and restore nandroids. With the Verizon HTC One you get Clockwork or TWRP, personally I like TWRP.
Post back here when you get Rumrunner to work and I will post more instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2473644
very meticulously follow these directions. you should try to understand what s-off, unlocking the bootloader, root etc. all specifically. that said, this exploit does it all for you.
you're going to need the htc one windows drivers (if you're on windows), minus the actual htc manager software (google/search these forums for them) and you're going to need adb/fastboot, which you can find in the android sdk (google it), or in a smaller download somewhere on this forum.
Thank you. Once I finally finish movie night with the wife I want to read this all and follow through. Thank you

RUU or Rumrunner? At this point, unless there has been a step you did not tell us, you should just need to run Rumrunner. RUU would be used to flash back to stock at some future point.
The links to Rumrunner seems to be having issues. I have been having problems with most of the links coming from goo.im. Here is a mirror you can use:
http://rumrunner.us/downloads-2/
There is a lot on this page, but assuming you are running the .8 firmware on your phone right now use this link:

I too had a few issues getting it to work at first. Make sure you read the prerequisites very well and everything is perfect. Also make sure any anti-virus and firewall programs are disabled or completely uninstalled even. My firewall was causing it to hang up. Then even after that it took a few trys to get it to take. And make sure you have the correct version of rumrunner for the version of firmware your phone is using.
I also had issues getting the recover to flash, and I ended up having to update my SDK Tools and run the CMD from inside that folder where I also put the recovery. This may be common knowledge but at the time I didn't know that.

Few things to make sure you have done for Rumrunner to work
- YOU HAVE TO USE USB2.0 if you use USB 3.0 the program will not work
- Uninstall HTC Sync and any other programs on your computer that are used with your phone
- Enable USB Debugging
- Disable Fastboot
- Enable "Unknown Sources"
- Disable "Verify Apps"
- Make sure there is no security on your phone, no passcodes, faceclock or anything else
- Disable Lock Screen Security
- Make sure you run the soju, exe with admin privileges
If that doesnt work, copy the text from the program so I can see where it went wrong.

Make a Ubuntu live cd, that might help. A lot of people have success with that when windows was failing them.
Edit: Depending on your computer, you might be able to make a Live USB. Live USB's are my preference but your bios has to support booting to the usb drive.

Use this to download Ubuntu - Ubuntu Desktop Download - make sure you download the 32-bit version.
When loading Ubuntu, you do not have to install it, you can click "Try Ubuntu" when prompted and not have to worry about having things setup on your computer to have two os's.

May have to be my first time. Finally an excuse to try it out. just curious, can I run this OS on a Mac? From a flash drive? I can use my windows but it's mainly for work and now that I think of it they may have put some internet blocking thing on there (not antivirus) because of sensitive information

That looks like a Driver issue. Verify you can connect with ADB, if not you need to double check you have the HTC drivers installed correctly. Sometimes you have to let the phone site for a bit for all the drivers to connect correctly the first time.

Can you point me in the correct direction for the Drivers?
Usually, if I'm not mistaken, they usually automatically download on Windows when I plug the phone in. When I used to root the Nexus 7 for example, it wouldnt connect. The HTC I am able to connect to my PC and trade out storage, and I do not have HTC Sync installed on the Windows becauase I have nothing but work stuff on there anyway.
Im at work right now, maybe I'll use this computer and see if this helps rather than my laptop at home.

It is listed as a requirement in the rumrunner thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2473644 If you dig in the thread a bit there are some good links. I think this may be the one you will end up needing:
