Hi,
I just bought myself a Desire HD and took it into the local shop to have it unlocked. However, according to the bloke in the shop, he used the wrong software (for Virgin) instead of the software for T Mobile and now my phone isn't starting up. He says that he is waiting for some software to be sent to him, so that he can reflash the correct software onto the phone. Obviously, I am rather worried about this, so can anyone confirm that this is possible and that my phone will be OK. And that iut is a known problem. Apparently he was supposed to have used the software for T Mobile to unlock it, but after using the Virgin software the phone has two conflicting programs trying to run at the same time. A|ny advice will be very welcome.
Many thanks
Ian
Yikes. They better fix it or replace it. Surprises me that most of the problems with peoples phones are from shops like this. If he has fastboot or adb access he should be fine. Though he should be able to snag what he wants from xda and fix it. Sounds like they are giving you the run around because they can't figure it out. I would demand a replacement.

Thanks for the quick reply. He has said that he is waiting for the correct software to be sent so that he can reflash the phone back to t mobile and then unlock the phone. This is really P'ing me off at the mo because, I have just bought this phone today to upgrade fron an LG optimus GT540 and was looking forward to playing with it and rooting it like I did the Optimus. If he doesn't sort it out by the end of tomorrow, I will be demanding a replacement.
to be honest if you are talking about rooting and already on here reading up etc i dont know why you even took it to a phone shop in the first place ,dont want to sound harsh but come on!! unlocking is free via a few methods if you read some of the guides and ofcourse if you got stuck then you have us here on xda to help
How exactly does your phone behave? Does it stay black when pushing the power button or hang at the HTC logo etc?
Sent from Desire HD using XDA app.
First of all, I took the phone to a shop because I didn't realise it could be done free from here. I have rooted my LG Optimus which is a much cheaper phone and so I know I can do it. However, I have never unlocked a phone, so I thought I would take it to a shop and have it done SAFELY.
Hiya unhallowedone, he showed me the phone and it has a white screen with ab few lines of text on it in (if I remember rightly) red and blue font.
I phoned him again today and he said that the website had sent the wrong software and he was still waiting for the right software and that it may be after Christmas before it is fixed. I have tried telling him that it either needs to be fixed by end of trading Saturday or I want a replacement, but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. I am going to see him face to face tomorrow morning to see what he says.
Thats the HBOOT screen, you can recover the device from there. You need a T-Mob UK RUU.
Do you know if you were running Gingerbread or Froyo?
Hiya Andy, it is running 2.2 Froyo. If I can download the software myself I will take it to him lol. He has said that due to his messup the phone now has both T mobile and Virgin software on it which obviously is incompatible and causing the problem and that he needs to reflash the original T mobile software to put it right. He is supposed to be getting it fromn a specific website that apparently is very slow in answering back and sending out downloads.
The lastest available RUU (ROM Update Utility) for T-Mobile UK is 1.75, which is Froyo.
http://www.filefactory.com/f/efa28fefafc4af9c/
It should be bottom of the list.
RUU_Ace_TMO_UK_1.75.110.2_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF_release_163304_signed.exe
You may need HTC Sync installed on the PC which will run the RUU. This is purely for drivers & such.
If your software version is higher than x.75.xxx.x it will not work, as you cannot downgrade without a Goldcard.
OK thanks, I am downloading it now and will take it in tomorrow morning. Hopefully if there are any problems, seeing as he is a supposedly proffesional shop, he will have a goldcard to sort it out.
I doubt they'd have a goldcard, but you never know!
If you get a "Main Version is Newer" type error then your firmware is newer and you will need the goldcard.
To make things quicker & easier, once the RUU has downloaded, run the ~.exe file until you get to the first prompt. Now search your computer for "rom.zip", (It is extracted when you run the RUU~.exe) It may be hidden in you local temp files.
Once found, copy to your desktop & rename "PD98IMG.zip". Pop this on a spare micro-sd, USB flash of if still in the stone ages a CD-ROM . You need to get this onto the SD card in the phone, don't put it in a folder, just straight on the card.
Next time you phone boots into HBOOT (Power + Vol Down) it will load the PD98IMG.zip automagically and prompt you to flash without using a PC.
Thanks for all your help, I am just looking for the ROM.ZIP file now. Hopefully this will sort it out as I would like to start playing with my new phone. Also, he wasn't impressed when I told him if it wasn't ready be Christmas, I wanted a replacement phone lol.
The rom.zip file will be in a hidden folder, so be sure to search them too. Once you close the RUU.exe the file is deleted, so be sure to keep it open while you find it.
If you do need a goldcard, and you ask for a replacement, be sure to perform a factory reset, that is available in the HBOOT menu, use the volume keys to navigate and the power button to enter.
Hi, I might sound green, but is it actually called rom.zip as I have looked in the temp folder and there is nothing there even whilst the prompt is still there.
I have found these two files that appear when I start the exe file:
ispr1622.rra
fd64.rra
If you type %TEMP% in cmd prompt it will take you to folder. It will be the newest zip file.

Had a look, I did have the right folder in the first place, but no zip file seems to appear when I run the exec file. Will have to have another go at it and see what is wrong. But thank you for your help. If nothing else, then I will take in the exec file and he can install it using a PC.
I'll see if I can extract it and just rename it and post it with my dropbox.
Update:
I was able to find it. File structure of the temp file was much different than what I have seen before. I am uploading it now and will post a link when done.

Here it is. It's been renamed pd98img already so just move it to root of sd card and flash through hboot.

Thank you so very much for that, he has just phoned me and said that he has the phone working, but has not unlocked it. I am now going to pick it up and see what has actually happened to it. Fingers crossed he hasn't done any damage. However, I may very qwell flash my phone with this software so that I know where I am at and I can then take it from there. I think i will give unlockinbg the phone myself a go. I don't see as I can do any worse than he has lol.

I will put links to how to resolve different problems later...
If it's not out tomorrow, I think that's gonna be the push I need to make one of those fancy goldcards and install an RUU version of Froyo. What does the telus one have anyway, EDGE disabled?
EDIT: Thanks for collecting this info; more than I knew before.
The telus update won't offer much as I know. They will put some of their crappy apps that you can't delete...add some feature in apps (music dowloading or ringtones downloading... with some downloadable stuff) and thats it.
Any developers on XDA could do this job within 1 week... Htc desire was out on july or august on Telus... and they struggle to get it done in time.
Gold card is not a bad idea at all. Avoiding warranty kinda hurt me.

I got one of the very first Desires from Telus and had it running a custom ROM within three days.
I'm on 2.2.1 now. LOL!
no reason in loosing your mind over this
my phone is currently not working because of radio not compatible with froyo issue. And this RUU might possibly be the only i can fix my problem. No one on this forum was able to give me any help.
Every minute is too long of a wait. RUUs should be out the second a phone is out with the original rom and so on. Not when updates come up and the whole world had time to test those updates..and then..you know what..last minute we notice there's an issue. It's ok, it's not like people stuck in a 3 year contract with a nice paper weight as a phone can do anything about it either..

Root and flash a custom ROM is an easy option... anyone can do it... but like I said... many people don't want to loose their one year warranty...
I'll wait to see what's in the update package... if too many ****ty telus's apps ... I will probably jump in the boat. Unbrand the phone with a gold card and get OTA updates directly from HTC seems to be the cleanest solution for me.
Come on Telus...don't disappoint us ...
btw: More then 50% Desire's owner (Canad) are not with telus... we all bought the phone at full price. And get stucked with telus's apps ( and you can't remove them) will defininetly be disappointing.

That could be the reason to why Telus took out the outright price. I'm with Telus and I even bought it outright then gave it off and bought another outright a month later.
And yes Telus are one of the worst for OS updates, the Hero just got the 2.1 update today. And the Milestone has been taking forever.

Yeah my phone made a strange noise last night and i figured it was this update.
Telus is the worst with OS updates. It was a full year before the Black Berry os update came to the Storm. I tried to do some freaking out at the store to get a new phone style stuff when they told me the new update just came out. I told them it had been a year- why would I assume it would ever come out?
Ill wait to see what ****ty Telus apps they install (is that what is taking them so long?) before I decide what I want to do. I could unbrand or switch to a diff rom- but I think I like sense.
I can understand the "RAGE" about telus sucking at updates. But why are you guys so upset. they will release froyo, all the **** in it will be old as dirt. no one will use anything from it to build a custom rom. And if you want something good you will flash a custom one.
Its like telling the future, except im pretty much guaranteed to be right.
The only thing if at all im concerned about is the ril and the radio.
And maybe a telus voice call app cuz they have it on my account, but be ****ed if i know how to get it going right now.
As for telus and installing ****ty apps. they have been good about that lately, i expect to see little to no Telus apps on the rom. The 2.1 rom was devoid of anything telus but the home page.
Good is subjective my friend. If you find froyo old as dirt its ok... but four those who want to keep their warranty...we have no choice. The probability of loosing 600$ is enough to not make changes on our phone...that will result on loosing the warranty.
Your are not the first...and not the last person to tell us to root..unbrand and bla bla bla...

Loosing warranty is relative to the knowledge of the user.
There is a pretty easy way to put the device back to factory software if you take the correct steps.
Thats if you have to. If the device is a brick before you return it then no harm.
ive already unrooted a telus desire, restored the stock rom from a nandroid backup (unrooted the backup) then flashed the radio back to the stock telus radio. after this i used fastboot to flash a stock recovery back on and lastly flashed the .83.0001 Hboot with fastboot, removing the s-off hboot. effectively returning the whole device back to stock. with all the correct software version numbers.

It's good to know that it is possible to return to the stock config. I think a lot of us "waiters" would get off the bench if we knew it was possible to go back to stock if necessary.
Juggalo_X, would you consider writing a step by step process for returning a Desire to the stock config? Since you have already done it...
The thread is not about how to flash a stock ROM.
I will pay to see you restoring a stock rom when The screen is dead or when your phone wont start...

1. Like HTC Sense and would like to keep it
2. Have a lot of reason to move to 2.2 (BT dialing)
3. want to root phone
I'm guessing there are stock HTC Desire rom floating around (from the factory unlocked desire) but are those rooted/rootable? I heard HTC has been making it harder and harder for us to root. And will rom for AMOLED work with sLCD phone?

There would be no point in restoring a dead device.
I'm under the impression that you think htc checks the flash on every dead device? this is not so. its cheaper for them to replace the whole main board in a device rather then pay an engineer to remove the board put it on a bed of nails dump the rom via jtag routine and then analyze the binary images.
Also, If we're on the topic of paying me to restore a device with a blank screen send me one ill jtag it for fun and restore the device. How much you willing to pay? i need a Desire Z you know
On a side note, In the past 5 years ive probably sent at the VERY least 15 bricked devices back to HTC, WITH software that would void the warranty on them. and i have ALWAYS got my device returned fixed under warranty every single time.

Pretty difficult to believe that. 15 bricked...
Also just about anyone (cell carrier, manufaturer via phone, etc) will tell you rooting, unlocking and modifying (removing bloatware) will void warranty. I have heard of people sending in devices with those and succeeding but not very often.
15 bricked in 5 Sears. A reason to not listen to you. Not everyone has the time to mess with their phones that much...learn to jtag..etc..

Okay, so while doing some unadvised actions, my Desire Z is in the state of not even being able to go into bootloader, recovery or signs of booting up. Not being able to get into bootloader I am unable to get into fasboot to reflash to needed files. It happened when I flashed the radio with Vision_TMOUS_RADIO_12.21.60.09b_26.02.01.15, the G2 one. The phone is s-off with 0005 hboot. I used the newer gfree method of doing this. If anyone can help me to get the phone to connect to the computer, then maybe I can flash whats needed. Or help me do what else to fix this brick, kinda shy of opening it up.
As far as I know, your phone is F.U.B.A.R. due to the fact that they have different radios, one specific to the tmobile G2 which has the different 3G bands as its "world" euro version aka the Desire Z. Sorry bro, vaya con dios. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

3. Copy it into your fastboot folder
4. Boot your device into FastBoot mode and connect it to your PC via USB
5. Go into your Android SDK folder with CMD (Windows) or Linux terminal
6. Flash the Radio on your device: "fastboot flash radio radio.img"
7. Wait until the process finishes. You should read "COMPLETE" on your device's display.
8. Reboot
9. Enjoy!
Please note that you should flash a new radio only if you really know what you're doing!
NOTE: 26.04.02.17 is known to work on G2 and most probably all the radios are flashable on both G2 and D-Z.
Happy flashing!

Do you have adb? If so, you can flash another radio.
Also you might try putting stock rom on SD. Make sure its named update. Try booting into hboot. You may just not have an image. Hboot will pick up that update and do its thing. Good luck.

Enough is enough. Go through this forum and grab the ruu radio from football for desire z. I believe this is the only way you are going to break brick. Once you have the file, be on the page with ruu , pull your batt, hook up your phone to pc, hit ruu and wait for it to recognize your phone. If it doesn't, it should give you instructions on what to do. This is the only chance you have I believe.

He bricked it with the radio file. All the os info is still on the phone. Htc will know. These guys went to school for this stuff. Don't be so sure of yourself. There are techs that can pull info from a device that has been underwater so don't think they won't be able to tell. They will go through the phone to find out why it bricked or won't boot and then it will sit with the refurbs after they have put stock os back on that comes with radio file.
Sent from my G2 using xda app
Annnnd in the meantime before they figure all that out, will they send me a new one you think?
One of the first questions a tech will ask you is "did you root the phone?" And unless you purchased that phone directly from htc, you have to deal with your carrier and they wiill tell you that. Real thing is this, you have a nice $600 paper weight. Good luck.

At that point do i just play dumb lol? As pathetic as it sounds, just until the point they send me a new unit or something. I mean they already told me to deal with the manufacturer. I just dont know what extent they"re going to take with it, ya know. Thanks alot for your time too.
mdayjr has no idea what he is talking about. I'm not meaning to sound insulting but you are simply wrong. He can not overcome this. You are bricked, very simple. The only way to overcome a TRUE brick is with JTAG which I'm sure is unknown how to do on a G2 as of now.
If you have insurance, call your carrier and tell them it just started acting up. If they ask about rooting at all just play dumb. They will not be able to ever know any different. Scouts honor. The only possible way to do this is very time-consuming, would be expensive if you had to pay for it, and is VERY risky. You think they can unbrick a phone? If they COULD unbrick a phone easily, they wouldn't replace it with a brand new one. They would make you send it in, fix it, and send it back. That's just better for business. Even if they could tell you rooted, you would already have your new phone before they knew and you would still be sitting there with a brand new phone.
Next time you flash a radio follow read to be sure other people with the same phone/SPL have flashed it and confirmed it working. Coming from a MT3G/G1 the most common reason for TRUE bricks is an improper radio or SPL flash.
If you are ever able to get into recovery or fastboot you are fine. Since you are unable to get into either recovery or fastboot your phone is bricked. If you would like to read about what's going on with your phone right now, you can read more here:

They don't use the same recovery software that you use to recover criminal/goverment files on a damaged drive, lol! What a waste of time! They replace the board if it isn't flashable and obviously they can't see the previous build without a functional bootloader. Plus, a damaged radio is enough to brick. Reflashing a radio won't fix it for sure but its worth trying EXCEPT he can't get into bootloader or fastboot!!! Shut up and quit making this guy more confused, please!

At that point do i just play dumb lol? As pathetic as it sounds, just until the point they send me a new unit or something. I mean they already told me to deal with the manufacturer. I just dont know what extent they"re going to take with it, ya know. Thanks alot for your time too.

If you can... get a replacement phone from your carrier. Tell them you charged it overnight and it won't power on. Simple as that! Don't listen to that other guy... he has no idea what he is talking about. He means well but is an idiot. He's what we call, in the IT profession, a user that has just enough experience to do some damage, lol! You will be fine... just play dumb. Same deal what I told you with HTC if you get referred there.
Hi guys,
so, this is indeed my first post here. But the forums helped me a lot with playing with my Desire.
But now I have a problem for which I cannot find help anywhere, neither here via the search nor Google. I really hope you would be so kind to help me find an answer.
This morning I dropped my Desire Nothing really happened case, but the display won't work anymore. When I start it I feel the vibration that indicates the system start, and I also see the buttons under the display lighting up. But the damn display itself stays black. My best guess now is that the connector between display and motherboard might be disconnected/broken.
Since I hope to get it repaired over warranty, I think the first thing to do is to recover standard sense rom and unroot it. Otherwise HTC wouldn't repair it, right?!
So now the tricky part: how can I do that with an unconnected display? Is there any chance?
Or would you just risk it and send it in rooted and with a custom rom?
What's left to say: It cannot be discovered by my computer since I'm not able to turn it on.
I would really really appreciate any help or inputs on how to resolve this.
Cheers,
Pascal
PS: Since my Macbook Air got stolen 3 days ago, I can only answer from my office PC.
Just boot in to fast boot the run ur ruu then send it off

So, how would I do that exactly without being able to use the display or the pc?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VVQyQizxhM
or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOm2DCzuE8g
Both methods require your minimum interaction.
Thanks!
Since I have no Win PC, this would be the equivalent for Mac/Linux, right?
And, how do I find out Baseband Version/Software Number?
I don't know much about OpenRUU, wait for someone else.
Second youtube video doesn't depend on your OS so I would suggest you that solution. However, it requires some interaction with your phone so...
If you're able to find a friend with Windows, that would be win-win solution. Basically you have zero interaction with your phone, just instal HTC Sync (drivers) and plug in the phone.
Since your phone is rooted do not bother about SW/BB version and use RUU ROM provided for your carrier which will restore SW and BB version to the stock. If your carrier sells unbranded Desire then go for the last official Froyo WWE:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo (2.29.405.5)
If your Desire is branded, find adequate ROM and possibly you'll need a goldcard too.
Thanks for your help guys.
Fortunately, I'm able to use a WinPC for a couple of days now. So, yay me
Unfortunately, it's not working the way I tried and wanted it to work. Here's what I did:
Downloaded, installed and started HTC Sync, plugged in my phone and powered it on. HTC Sync doesn't recognize the phone
Secondly I downloaded and executed the RUU exe, but it also doesn't recogize the phone.
Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just not working cos I'm not able to unlock the SIM?
Let me make something clear to you! If they do take and repair a dropped phone, they'll not even care to look at the software... Seriously. Warranty is for factory/shipping errors, which were caused by the manufacturer. Good luck convincing them how a factory fault suddenly destroyed your display.
But the easy way of going to stock is to get a sd-card reader and put a PB99IMG.zip in the root of the sd-card and start it up in bootloader mode. It'll flash it automatically.(no need to use a windows pc)
Well, it's worth a try, isn't it?! And to be on the safe side, I'd like to get everything back to normal before sending it in. At least to know, that the SW really isn't the reason why they don't wanna repair it.
And for this PB99IMG.zip, does it have to have exactly this name?
Thx
Attempting to root my DINC2 (still running Froyo 2.2.1) via AlphaRev\Revolutionary Windows 0.4pre4 but getting "Failed-Go have some Lemonade" on the second boot into Hboot.
Phone’s HBoot Header still showing S-On. Is it because my phone doesn't have Gingerbread update?
If so, I tried to run Gingerbread RUU but getting another error (170).
Just to note, I made sure I connected in Charge Mode only, I enabled USB Debugging and I disabled Fastboot.
I would be really grateful for any assistance.
Just update from the phone. There are two OTAs that have been released after 2.2.1. Once you do that use revolutionary again. The newest revolutionary is for gingerbread incredible 2 only. I dont have the link for the old one...maybe someone else does?
I got it. Somebody else asked for it the other day.
Code:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OVF7AUG5
I cannot update via the phone (OTA) because carrier is not allowing update. I try the Software Update check and Check New but nothing comes through.
As for the link to the older revolutionary, thank you! But a follow-up question. Ususally in revolutionary you get a key from the web site after entering your serial #. How do I install it via this download link that you provided?
I have downloaded the zip and can extract it but wont I be prompted for the key?
Go to revolutionary.io same as normal to generate your beta key.
Another user in the gingerbread root guide thread used it with no problems.

OK. Will Do. Now If I already tried with the AlphaRev\Revolutionary Windows 0.4pre4 version (w/Gingerbread) can I use the same key from that attempt or start anew?
Last question, I promise.
Not sure. It would be best to start over. Just for good measure.

Then again. The worst that could happen is that it tells you the beta key is invalid. So its whichever you wanna do.
Sent from my HTC Droid Incredible 2 via the XDA app.
Both attempts 1) without generating a new key and 2) generating a new beta key both failed with "invalid beta key, aborting...". Any other thoughts? Appreciate your help.
Are you sure you properly put the beta key in?
Did you copy/paste the beta key? or did you manually type it?
Good question, I copied and paste. I will try to manually enter it as soon as I boot my daughter off the computer.
no go. Entered both beta keys manually. Both failed. I saw the thread where you shared the same download originally. I sent the person a private message to see what he did to make it work. Maybe I should try it on another computer?
Copy/paste is the recommended method.
You may want to contact lonati the other person that requested the froyo exploit.
Or try the Revolutionary irc chat. http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=revolutionary

Another pc might work. I saw one person that had trouble getting it to work on Windows Vista.
Well visiting that IRC Chat was fun. NOT! Really a tough crowd there.
But what I was able to get out of their replies was to "Start Fresh" and "Download 0.4pre4 from http://revolutionary.io and generate a key there".
I will do both on my other computer tomorrow morning. Hopefully I will have better news tomorrow. I will update then and again thanks for your time. Tomorrow.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. maybe starting completely over will get you rooted. Can you not bring your phone to a verizon store to have them manually update it? Then you should be good to go with a fresh gingerbread install.
Well, tried on a different computer but still no go. I sent a private message to lonati but no reply. I also tried the IRC Chat again and because of a "Newkeys" function in 0.4pre4, there is no way the newly generated Key will work on anything previous.
Im going to focus my efforts on getting the Gingerbread RUU update working. Everything works with that upo to a point when its trying to read the phone, then it comes back with a Error Code 170. If I can solve that then I can upgrade to Gingerbread then Root.
If you see this issue elsewhere please email me.
I haven't tested it but maybe you can update it using the RUU.exe Here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/ccf....01.0622_NV_VZW1.92_release_199487_signed.exe
It states that it will work for phones that are not rooted yet. Make sure you run it as administrator.
klabit87 I was able to get it installed. Another member suggested finding the ROM.ZIP file (while RUU install is running), rename it to PG32IMG.zip, put it on root of SD card, and turn off phone, hold vol down and power to get to fastboot and install the RUU.
That worked like a charm. Im in shock! Now I can root via Revolutionary once I finish enjoying this victory. Thank you so much for sticking with me. Every message made me feel more and more determined to get this done. THANK YOU.
And Thanks to everyone else who posted an idea.
Glad to hear you got everything working. I think I may have been just as determined as you. I knew about the ability to rip the zip from the temp folder but I didn't know it would flash with fastboot while you still have S-On. Have fun flashing your rooted DInc2!
