Only if you go in the market and download really shady apps. Just be careful when downloading apps and always read the reviews.

I also wonder this too. Besides getting malware from the app market, can you get a virus from using the browser or from email like on a PC?

In theory, yes. In reality, no. I've yet to come across a virus via email or on the net for linux. To us the user base may seem large to us but it's really not. Though with Androids growth the story may be different in the near future.
at this point, a virus would still be more ''lucrative'' or ''productive'' on a PC. that's not to say that with the increase in cell usage we wont see them some day. just be careful of the sketchy market apps that capture your personal info. they normally come in the form of a task killer/battery saver. in my experience, they've always been tagged with ''droid, boost, turbo, battery, drain, saver.'' i work in a sprint tech center, so i see em all the time. as a cell phone guy, they stick out IMMEDIATELY. and of course im sure you already know that your phone came out of the box with a terrible virus. The most likely place to get infected apps is from non-market sites. Google recently found and removed about 10 or so infected apps, and a week after, appbrain still had several of them available for download.

I installed this yesterday and it said that I have some CIQ .so files. And this was on a noCIQ ROM. I'm sure the .so files can't execute anything but I'm just wondering why they were left behind?

Can someone tell me what this means? Voodoo found something, and I'm just trying to figure out exactly what it means, so I can go to my Service Provider whom recently stated that they do not use it on our devices.
Here is the the record it found:
Test for: Linux kernel driver
(KERNEL_DRIVERS, weight 90)
found: c008322c T lge_store_ciq_reset
I'm running an LG Optimus 3D (P920) (running CM7)

Comes up clean on my phone. I get a 170 which means it is there, but inactive.
I am shocked it took people this long to care about CarrierIQ. Did anyone notice how much they have received in funding? Here's a link from 3 years ago. http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/story/carrier-iq-closes-20-million-funding-round/2009-01-28 . Why would someone pay that much money each year to fund something that supposedly does nothing? I have stayed on SRF 1.2 ever since k0nane removed CIQ. Glad to see the new ROMs are hip to privacy now. I have seen some really stupid news stories attempting to say that it helps with integration, like a sneaky Siri. No it does not, it runs silently and offers no benefits to the end user. It collects and sells your information to its corporate financiers. Its like digital Glengarry leads.

I actually just heard about this app yesterday and tested it with several ROMs. Curiously I always got a score of 270, though it said CIQ was apparently inactive, except for ACS ICS 5.5, in which it said it was ACTIVE! That surprised me.
If CarrierIQ has you worried about your privacy, then you should Google "Cellebrite UFED" and try to remember if a cop ever had your phone in their possession for about a minute.

I just tried this out -- it found CarrierIQ and said it was active. Considering I'm only on rooted stock Gingerbread at the moment, I'm not really surprised. The score was 440, FWIW. I'm planning to move to a custom ROM that will get rid of CIQ, so I shouldn't have it around too much longer. Just got to work out some details, like backup/restore plans and picking a ROM (the Mostly Stock one seems like a nice beginner option).
Also, it may be worth noting that the app description says, "Results cannot be blindly trusted but the accuracy is decent already." There are other similar CIQ detection apps, too -- Carrier IQ Detector (by Lookout Labs), for example. I'm not sure how well they do compared to each other, but it's probably good that they're available and more details about CIQ are coming out into the open.

I just came from the Nokia n900 and having so many things working on the phone is a refreshing change! Ive lurked around and read a lot! As a result ive succesfully rooted my phone and have even tried out a few custom roms! However I have a question about a ROM im currently using but I cant post in the dev forum yet so I figured ill try here. Im currently using the digital warfare ROM and ive noticed that my powersave feature does not seem to work correctly. It will kick in regardless of the battery percentage I set. So ive just left it off for now. can someone help?

First I want to give you huge props for actually reading and doing all that on your own instead of posting a ton of useless threads with questions that can easily be found! But to answer your question, the My Account app has its own power save feature, try going into that app and adjusting it from there or just disabling it all together. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I can tell! making the transition from hw Kb to all touch is kinda weird but this.phone is so capable and powerful its awesome!
Welcome dude and yea i would just disable this phone is great with battery life anyways. One suggestion tho i would freeze tmobile my account all together in titanium backup or uninstall it tgats if u have it installed it actually messes with wifi. When your on wifi it will turn on 4g signal whenever data is requested which isnt good cuz u think ur using wifi the whole time. Ever since ive disabled tgat app i have not had a problem with wifi or 4g service. I actually think its a way for tmobile to snoop on our data. I made a thread about this and other people have confirmed this app to be the culprit. I actually was gonna take my phone back because i couldnt get wifi to stay connected so thats when i started investigating and found this
Hmm I like to keep track of my data usage but if thats the case away it goes!

No im running at stock speeds
It's not unusual for a phone to get warm when running cpu/gpu intensive processes like games. It only becomes a problem when it gets incredibly hot and forces the phone to reboot or the battery gets too hot to touch.

Thanks. now i'm having a new problem. My phone will just randomly shut off and I cant turn it back on until I pull the battery. It has happened twice so far

not hot. i just flashed his new rom/kernel combo with a clean wipe and as i was messing around with milocker it did it again. just shut off on me. only way to bring it back is to pull the battery. very strange.
You using a new ROM? I know you said new ROM/kernel combo but that could imply same ROM new, kernel. If youre on the same ROM, check the thread to see if its an issue with it I guess. Could always try a new one and see if that fixes it. Let us know if you find out anything.

Agreed. If it were any other phone, it might have been an option, but definitely not for a gaming phone that needs all the power it can get.

Nope, you dont really need it ; the amount of "virus'" you can get for android are limited and if you fear you have one you can easily download one, scan your device and then remove it after.
Guys are you living in caves? There is a massive problem with malicious software on android. And with the rise of high powered tablets the problem is getting bigger. Agreed atm the majority of malware only exists in the chinese app markets. But it's better to be safe than sure

I lost my E4GT after installing the AOKP ICS ROM. I remotely installed an app called Plan B to locate the phone, but I found that it doesn't work with ICS. Does anyone know of an app that I can install remotely through the Play Store that will work with ICS?
I'm feeling quite screwed at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks killaphatboy. Sprint Family Locator has helped me to determine that it's within 500 yards of my residence. I live in a city, so that's still a wide area to cover, but at least I know it's not destroyed/run over.
BTW, Lookout needs to be installed PRIOR to losing your phone for it to work.

Lol I had a similar experience but unfortunately Family Locator helped me find my wife's phone AFTER I ran over it... Fortunately it came out if the experience with only a few scratches. Even more fortunate is that my wife hasn't lost it sense.
But in answer to the OP I'd say sign up for the free trial of Family Locator to find it and then install Lookout for the next time. Good luck! Hope you find it!
GPS Enable is another good app to have installed when you finally find it. It allows you to enable gps through a txt msg. Android Lost is actually a better tracking app than Lookout and it is also free.

Android Lost looked great, so I took your recommendation and push installed it. But like Where's My Droid, my text commands aren't working. My phone is probably running out of battery power by now, so I better find it quick!
I'm going to continue the search in the morning.
I use Cerberus. It is really nice. It only costs $4 for a lifetime license. It has nice features like being able to hide the app in your app drawer. It can also be integrated into your rom with a flashable zip from their website, I have not tried that feature though. I have it set to take a photo with the front camera and email it to me when the lock pattern is entered incorrectly 3 times in a row. I have some pretty funny photos of my 4 year old attempting to unlock my phone.
I just realized that you already lost your phone. I don't know how I missed that because you stated it so clearly. Cerberus is a great app, but it must be installed before your phone is lost. Sorry for the confusion.
Mystery solved
I found my E4GT....it fell out of my dash when I stopped at a light. I have no idea how it got up in there. Maybe I put it on the dash and it fell down through a hole, or maybe it defied physics and fell on the floor and slid up in there. Regardless, I'm ecstatic to have it back. I can return the new E4GT that I bought to replace it ( yeah I liked it that much).
I'm running Lookout and Cerberus now in case I ever lose it again. I like that Cerberus takes a photo of the culprit if the lock code is entered incorrectly. Thanks to everyone that offered sugesstions.
OK, so I have a rooted S3 running the FrostyJB ROM. When I try using the USSD code to check my data usage (#932#), I get a message that my account is not set up for that feature. Also, both the TMO My Account app and the mytmobile website do not show my data usage, although they do show usage for minutes and text messages.
I ran into a TMO store, and they couldn't figure it out but said it may be due to root. Thoughts? I would like to be able to check my data usage, and every time I flash a ROM, it resets the data usage stats on the phone. Very annoying.
Thats weird, both the tmobile apps show my data. I am also rooted amd running frostyjb as well. Whoever told you it was cuz you were rooted is an idiot or just a liar. Even when I was on the 2gb plan it would show

I have the same issue. Haven't had time to really dig into it though.
It may be because we are running JB. Or it could be the MyAccount app. If you look at the comments for it on the market, the latest versions are pure junk and cause nothing but problems.
