Many of my calls lately people have been complaining that they are hearing a lot of feedback, scratching, high pitched whines, etc.
I didn't have this problem a few months ago, now it seems to be occurring on all of my calls.
Can this be fixed with a radio update? A change in the rom I'm running perhaps? Or is this just crappy service or a phone that's going bad?
Thanks!
try flashing a stock rom and see if it goes away. If not, the microphone could be going bad.

This seems to happen a fair bit. I have no idea if it's the phone or Orange's terrible coverage (well, not really coverage since I've got all the bars, but the network's overloaded by too many geeks like us) in Soho, but when people call me, there's a good chance they won't be able to hear me talk. If I call them back, everything works as it should.
This happened with stock Orange ROM, stock Orange ROM + OTA update and now with generic ROM.
It must be either a network or software issue since it works fine sometimes and always if I call them. It's certainly doesn't happen every time someone calls me.
Just wondering if anyone else had seen the same thing?
Not had any problems like that with mine on the Orange network, have occasional problems when talking to people on 3 but that is the 3 network causing those problems.
Before you flashed the generic ROM you should have sent the phone back and gotten a new one. Don't you think a major issue like a phone not being able to properly make PHONE CALLS might have been a huge talking point up to now? Surely the fact no one else has raised this means it was probably a hardware fault with your particular phone.
Get it replaced and hope they don't notice the flashing you've done.
Your point is of course right, but it hasn't happened ever outside of Soho and I definitely think it's software/network for that and the reasons I initially wrote.
Honestly, Orange in and around Soho has gotten to be almost unusable recently. I have to drop to GSM only a lot to be able to make/receive calls. The same is true for my friends on O2 and it's been that way ever since the smartphones started becoming more ubiquitous. I've complained to Orange and they say they're trying to improve it but they're a bit lax on the details.
It's a matter of time until it's possible to reflash the Orange ROM so if it does get worse and/or turn out to be a hardware fault, then as you say, I'll either send it back as is, or reflash to stock ROM first if poss.
This might sound daft, but I had the same thing, then I realised that it was the way I was holding the phone, I had a finger over the mic at the bottom... Embarrassing cure for me!

:-D Sounds crazy, but I'll check it out the next time I receive a call :-D
Hi, I'm having a weird issue on my defy. Basicly, during a regular phone conversation, when I speak I can hear my voice out from the earpiece.
There is no delay in it and It's not so bad really (sometimes I don't even notice it) and I don't think I couldn't live with it, but for now I still do notice it which is not very good.
For the record, it's a B33, hence from the older or "unsafe" series... but in my theory, this should not related to the widely acclaimed earpiece problems.
What do you think?
How loud is it?
I haven't noticed it myself but instantaneous feedback is used on phones to stop the user from shouting into their phones unnecessarily.
Otherwise it could be the other person on the line using a speaker-phone or something.
not very loud actually, you just know it's there, and it's for all persons I'm calling, not limited only to one... as said, there is no delay whatosver, just some presence of your own voice coming out from the earpiece. a bit difficult to describe... maybe a lot of people dont even notice it...
now I tried to record my voice with a voice recording app and there is no such feedback
I can hear my own voice like an eco when I talk to others.. it is very annoying and I have had my phone repaired for broken earpiece speaker. That did not fix the eco problem. I have also got my phone replaced once because of other problems, still has eco when speaking.
My wife says she doesn't hear it when she use my phone. But I'm very annoyed about stuff like this.
It do help a bit if I hold my phone different and a bit further away from my mouth when I talk in it.
if I could I would return it now, I thought I could ignore it when I got used to it but now I can't (had it since december) and now I'm dreaming of other phones to replace my Defy... most likely a Nexus S so I get vanilla android.
for how long you have the phone? it could be a defective piece , mine is from the older pieces too made in november 2010 but hasnt any problems for now anyway i own it from one month and it will be no suprise for me if it starts making problems...
I have experienced this from time to time. I first noticed that it was happening primarily when my phone was switching to edge connection from the 3g. Someone else suggested that when this happens it is because the user is speaking too loud. I have tried lowering my voice when I get the echo and it does go away. However, this still only seems to happen when the signal switches. Perhaps pay closer attention and see if it is the same for you? Definitely try lowering your voice. I did a test with my wife on the other end and when I lowered my voice she said I sounded the same to her but my echo went away.

but are you experiencing the echo also with delay? this only happens sometimes
and most of the times occurs when the person you are calling has the volume of the earpiece too high so the microphone is able to catch it and there you have the echo with delay.
but in my case there is no delay, it's just like my voice is directly amplified to the earpiece.
I've had 2 Defys so far and have noticed the echo whenever I speak slightly loud with both phones,i think it's supposed to be a feature or something so that you know how you sound because it's also found among other devices

thanks a lot. actually it could make sense because if you think of the defy as a rugged phone and it's meant to be used in difficult conditions where the user tends to speak too loudly.
I got defy about a week ago and i also had this issue. I returned the phone to the shop that i bought it and i am waiting for them to check it in order to get a replacement.
Also,i have noticed that i hear my own voice through the speaker a bit amplified and without any lag when i talk with my mouth close to the microphone. This was not only happening while i was having a conversation in a call, but from the very first moment that the call was launched.
For instance, when i was talking during the dial tone and before the recipient has accepted the call, i was keep getting my voice back through the speaker. That can exclude any network related cause of the problem.
So i can't understand if this is a normal condition or a problem and i am anxious about the new device that i will get. I think that i got in all that trouble for nothing and the replacement is gonna be like the first one... Is there any way to avoid it?
The brand new defy that i got as a replacement arrived. It has the echo problem too... Hands Up.The phone is so good apart from this issue. It is so annoying though i would be glad if i could get it fixed.
ok well im having bad reception issues with pretty much everything right now and im getting frustrated with the phone for these reasons.
maybe ill explain my problem a little bit more...
ok so firstly with the phones network connection, calls get dropped... sometimes no connection at all and messages get delays from incoming and outgoing which is annoying on so many levels but the main problem is calls being dropped. i have no idea why the calls are getting dropped, i initially thought it was due to my face pressing the "end call" button but i dont think thats the case however the reception does seem lower when the phone is up to my face.
the much much more annoying issue is with the internet wifi and 3g connection.
so i use skype quite a lot and i also use ebuddy a lot too...
ebuddy gives me an issue that there is no connection once every 2 minutes or so and not coming back for a minute or so.
skype is much worse... the calling quality is aweful meaning i cant use it to talk to anyone what so ever with frequent drop-outs and frequent "re-callings"
when i bring the phone to my face in skype the connection seems worse too but that may just be me thinking about it too much im not sure.
i have not rooted my phone or modified it in anyway. i am willing to to fix this issue for sure.
thanks in advanced and i will post more information if needs be.
Have you called your service provider? If I was completely stock w/ no root that's the first thing I would do. If you are under warranty they will replace with a refurb. Does this happen everywhere or only certain areas? Did this happen after gingerbread update?
If not rooted there isn't a whole lot you are going to be able to do about it.

i dont want to go through the hassle of going through them just to find out that this is a re-occuring issue anyway.
this happened before and after the gb update that didnt make much or any difference to the reception.
this issue seems to happen everywhere but some places worse then others i mean sometimes i can get full signal in my living room but i go towards the back bedroom and bathroom and a signal cant be found at all, no 3g no G or H, nothing. even if im just watching my phone the signal can move about by quite a difference in just a few minutes worth.
i am prepared to root my phone if that will make a significant difference however ill probably need someones help with that as im still very confused with it all but that will be ok if it needs to be done, it needs to be done.
skype is the main issue i encounter, using it for work related talks means that using a normal phone is the only option and even then the desire Z doesnt perform that well with those tasks
just sent in the phone for repair... lets hope that this is just a one off random issue and doesnt happen again is there any other way to improve signals and signal strength?
Steve Jobs says "You're holding it wrong."
Rooting and changing radios can "possibly" improve it from what I've heard, but I tend to leave mine alone.
I assume this issue happens everywhere, and not just one location (as in your house)?
the issue happens frequently yea, i really hope its just a problem with the phone because if not ill be severely disapointed with the quality of the phone... struggling to do basic tasks such as making a call (even if it is a normal phone call or a skype phone call) should be expected to perform well.
i had a sony ericsson k750 before my htc and at least it wouldnt just lose signal mid-call or annoy me with limited connection notifications constantly and that wasnt even on 3g!
as ive mentioned before i was going to root to try to fix this issue but i just couldnt deal with that problem anymore i thought it was unacceptable to perform like that. lets hope this is just a one off and not the phone.
Both my brother and I are having problems with bad call audio quality. Anyone else having these problems or know a fix.
Running stock 4.0.2.
Tried different sim cards.
Both signals was full.
Was talking with my brother earlier today, and he said it sounded like I only used vowels, and that he have had the same complaints.

Had a few different iterations of this problem. My wife had a bad mic and it sounded like "she was under water" returned it, no problem. Now sometimes she sounds just a little weird with the new one. I chalk it up to the fact we live in the sticks of Rootstown OH. Are other people complaining of your problems or are you guys complaining of eachothers?
There are others that have complained as well, but I get the complains when I use my headset as well. Using a Bose QC15 with the iPhone mic/cable.
I have been having issues with echo (hearing back what I say on about a 1 second delay, which can be extremely distracting).
I don't know if it's the phone, my provider, or possibly that the other person has me on speakerphone, since it seems to be more noticable on business calls- or I could be noticing it on business calls more because I'm trying to concentrate and the echo can derail my train of thought.
It's a bit of a mystery...anyone else have this echo or know the cause/solution?
Bad Quality Call Galaxy Nexus (ME TOO)
Hi guys the last two weeks i'm experiencing a weird problem with my galaxy nexus ics 4.0.2. When i'm calling someone i'm hearing a "wind" noise ...it's like psssss....something when i'm trying my headset the "wind" noise became worst, note that i;m hearing the same noise when someone call me ...I TRIED A LOT OF THINGs ... I used other headsets ....i changed the sim card....i tried another provider (i'm on 3g) ...but this noise remain .... do you think it's a problem that it can be fixed with the upcoming 4.0.4 update...should i return my galaxy back and try another one, or reset the phone?
P.S. Thnks in advance, have you heard when are we going to get an update?(4.0.4)
yup. The sound quality is not that great. Some times, I can hear my voice being repeated when I am talking on the phone.
I'm having the same problem. People complain that they hear an echo when I talk.
try turning down the ear piece volume the mic can pick it up if its too loud
Hi folks,
Has anyone actually got the speakerphone to function on this phone?
Talking to several different people now, they struggle to hear me. It's almost as if the sound cuts out, and it's held pretty close to my face.
I often need the speakerphone while i'm busy doing other things and it seems impossible with this handset.
Not sure what I am doing wrong. Have tried all kinds of settings.
