I go to the zip file, it does its thing, says installing, bunch of other stuff, then I get an error saying "no such file or directory". Then it aborts. Why??
do you have a memory card? Not sure, try using Odin or use auto root and try the generic install option to push it that way

Hey all -
Rooted yesterday with unrevoked 3.21 (wicked awesome), so I'm S-OFF and have ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.5. Flashed my first ROM today, Virtuous 3.0.1, without a hitch via ROM Manager. So far so good.
Downloaded various PB31IMG.zip's in hopes of installing a new, custom splash for my Dinc.. no such luck. I'm following the instructions found here on the "Splash1 and Bootscreen Compilation" thread to a "T." Problem is, when I boot into hboot, it's not recognizing PB31IMG.zip as an update, so I'm not getting the confirmation dialogue. Also, when I press volume up, I'm getting "no image" or "wrong image" as the message when it runs through the zip.
I'm wondering (1) is there an alternate method, aka install through ClockworkMod? and (2) are there other requirements besides S-OFF?
Thanks -
Zoon0n
Are you moving them to the root if your sd card?

Yes, most definitely, it's sitting right there in /sdcard when I check it in Astro
Thats strange. I would invest in root explorer. Having both I think its far superior. So your booting into your bootloader right? And the first action your taking is moving your volume rocker up?

Whenever you download anything from your phone it most always goes to your download folder. Did you move it out of there and place it on your root?

It's the darndest thing.. it's definitely in the root of the SD Card, I pulled it out and plugged it into my PC just to check. I'm hitting volume up straight after booting into hboot, but it says "No image or wrong image" when it looks through the PM31IMG.zip.. and this is with all of the files I've tried, both the ones I downloaded here and the ones I created. Root explorer is on the list, I'm trying to be frugal however and decided to grab SetCPU first (a good choice I'd say )
Have you attempted to open the update file on your computer, and unzip it? I know sometimes my router will pick up noise and interference, and CRC check's on zip's and exe's will fail. Opening the zip on your computer and seeing if it unzips correctly will tell you if it's a corrupted zip or not.

I'm able to unzip them just find. Inside there's the splash1.img and android-info with the following text:
modelid: PB3120000
cidnum: VZW__001
mainver: 3.17.605.0
hbootpreupdate:3
look right?
It sounds like your sd card may not be formatted to FAT32. Refprmat it using FAT32 and it should work like a charm.

I can successfully install Roms thats I download through Rom Manager, but for some reason I cannot install Roms that I download online, put in my SD card and try to flash through Clockworkmod. The downloaded files are in .zip for and I choose to install zip from SD. When I select it, the screen shows that it is installing but takes only a second and doesnt flash successfully. I dont get any errors but for some reason the Rom just doesnt install. If anyone has had this issue or could help it would be much appreciated, thanks.
nevermind, i figured it out. for some reason the files would only work when i compressed them again. its weird but im glad i got it to work

change the setting on your mac (i know you did not say it was a mac but since this exact thing happened to me i know it must be one) to not "open safe files after downloading" in the preferences - general tab. that way you will not have to zip files again since they get unzipped on downloading.
I am having troble unrooting an evo 4g. I got to the s-on part, but can't get the phone to recognize the PC36IMG.zip file. I've tried a couple of these ruu files, thinking that most of those might not be working properly. The ultimate goal, really, is to get rid of the superuser permissions. I am trying to sent the phone back to Sprint and am afraid that they might see it. I've tried downloading Terminal Emulator. However, everytime i put rm superuser.apk, the response i get is that it can not be done because it's a read-only file. any suggestions?
if the s lock is on you wont be able to get rid of it. How are you trying to get it to read the PC36IMG.zip because if you have it on the root of your sd card and restart into bootloader it will automatically read the zip and ask to flash it if not just do a clear storage and that should solve it

You need to run ruu now that you're S on. As was noted already, the PC36IMG must be on the main directoryof your SD card. Also, make sure the file isn't named PC36IMG.zip.zip. If you're using windows, then the file extension is hidden, and the .zip is already there, just hidden. Therefore, if you add a .zip, then its really there twice. So using windows, it should just look like PC36IMG. Once its named correctly, and on the main directory of your SD card, the bootloader should detect it and ask you to update.

Copy all of the data on your sdcard to your pc desktop and then reformat the card. Now place the RUU file on the root of the sdcard and if the phone doesnt recognize it in the bootloader menu, then it might mean your sdcard isnt "good" enough. I had the same problem with a class 2 card and i had to buy a whole new sdcard for it to work.
I've checked and made sure that the file name is right. When i put the phone in bootloader it doesn't recognize anything. nothing pop up to ask yes/ no.
Like I said, read my previous post. Format the card and try again. If it doesnt work, then try it with another sdcard.
Also, do you think it would be a problem to send in the phone with superuser on it still?
p.s. i tried to get it out after i re-rooted it and the s was off.
Thank you for the helps.
You can't send the phone in rooted period. Flash that unrevoked s-on utility again to get it back to s-on. Borrow somebodies sdcard and put the RUU file on it. Then flash the RUU in bootloader when the phone recognizes it. I STRONGLY believe that its your sdcard acting funny because it happened to me too.

I agree. If the OP is sure the file is on the main directory of his card, and its named properly, yet it wont read it...then formatting the card would also be my recommendation.

Hey, so I'm fairly (very) new to modifying my phone and I was having troubles
I'm on Android 4.1.1 on a SGH-T999V phone, but was unable to install CM10.1.
I rooted the phone, did as all guides said to do, and installed the tmo CM10.1 nightly to my computer as well as GApps. I transferred them to my phone via usb and then unplugged booted into recovery mode. I wiped cache and did the factory data reset, successfully on my way to completion, but then when I wanted to navigate into "choose zip from sdcard" I got an error and was not able to go in at all. I was able to go into "choose zip from internal sdcard" where there was also the CM10.1, but the operation failed. I think it said something along he lines of can't mount sd card or something like that. I was however able to successfully install GApps from the same folder and was then forced to reboot without CM, having wasted all my time.
I downloaded cm-10.1-20121224-NIGHTLY-d2tmo and gapps-jb-20121011-signed
What do I do; where did I go wrong? Sorry for my crappy explanation, but I am not extremely tech savvy.

Is there a specific marketplace you recommend? I use getapk but many of the files are outdated or otherwise unusable
When I use ROM Manager Premium, I press "Download ROM" and it prompts me to install CWM Recovery, but my phone isn't on list of supported devices (there's only SGS3 MetroPCS). Because of this, it won't let me use ROM Manager. What do I do?
I tried installing via ROM Manager, and I had it delete cache/data, etc but it still didn't work. Says
-- Installing: /sdcard/cm-10.1-20121224-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip
Finding update packag...
Opening update packag...
E:Can't open /sdcard/cm-10.1-20121224-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip
(No such file or directory)
installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.

Bump
It looks like you might have gotten a corrupt install. Try redownloading it and loading it back on your SD card. Also make sure you have updated and installed any ROM Manager files beforehand
I have a new T-Mobile Note 2. I installed TWRP and SuperSU using the toolkit. I then used Root Browser and deleted a bunch of apps ("bloatware", I thought), and apparently removed too much, as the phone no longer boots android.
I downloaded the two Tweaked 2.4.1 Rom files, checked Md5sums, OK, and coped same to external SD card. I did the recommended wipes using TWRP. Thereafter, also using TWRP, BasicInstall finishes with success, but the Tweaked.2.4.1.UVBMD1.073113.zip install fails with "E: Unable to open zip file". Then I try to reboot, and get a message "your phone does not appear to be rooted", and take the option "Install SuperSU? That also fails.
I think maybe I can't install Tweaked.2.4.1.UVBMD1.073113.zip because the phone isn''t rooted? Is that right? But I can't figure out how to root the phone either. I'm stuck in a loop. Recommendations to fix appreciated.
Thx, Gus

If you got an unable to open zip file error - even though the md5s check out the only thing I can think of is the zip has become corrupted somehow. Did you check the md5 on a computer and move the file over? Might be worth checking it on the phone (you can use the terminal interface in twrp fwiw - just use the md5sum command).
Bottom line recommendation - try to copy the full zip over to the sdcard again. Also, just to sate my curiosity - did you wipe /system before flashing?

I did recopy the two Tweaked .zip files to the sdcart - repeated attempt to install on phone, same problems.
I also unzipped the two Tweaked files on linux, and although I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to see, there's no errors and a bunch of directories and files that generally look reasonable
I think I did wipe /system on the phone before flashing - could that be my problem? Also, when I go into terminal mode in TWRP on the phone, I get a hang at "Updating partition details"
Is it possible I've accidentally deleted the unzip program on the phone?
Is there stuff I could/should do from an adb shell on my PC through a USB hookup to the phone?
thx, Gus
You could flash stock rom with odin and start over.

Hmm... maybe reflash recovery? That's very strange - especially if the first zip worked fine and the second had the issues...

I wish I could! But when I try that it hangs at "Waiting for USB debugging to be enabled". And that's even if the phone is booted into download mode.

Odin back to stock. Twrp started failing everything I tried to flash also. That's why I stopped using it. But you need to Odin to stock

Finally got it working. dwitherell was more or less right about the problem. Here's my steps: 1) did a low-level format on the external sda card 2) recopied the two Tweaked zip files onto the external sda card 3) Cheked md5sums for both files on the external sda card 4) ainstalled from TWRP, as before. BUT - this time it worked.
I'm guessing either the external sda card or one of the zip files was corrupted - as dwitherell had suggested. Thanks to him and other forum members for helping out.
