Hey, so I'm fairly (very) new to modifying my phone and I was having troubles
I'm on Android 4.1.1 on a SGH-T999V phone, but was unable to install CM10.1.
I rooted the phone, did as all guides said to do, and installed the tmo CM10.1 nightly to my computer as well as GApps. I transferred them to my phone via usb and then unplugged booted into recovery mode. I wiped cache and did the factory data reset, successfully on my way to completion, but then when I wanted to navigate into "choose zip from sdcard" I got an error and was not able to go in at all. I was able to go into "choose zip from internal sdcard" where there was also the CM10.1, but the operation failed. I think it said something along he lines of can't mount sd card or something like that. I was however able to successfully install GApps from the same folder and was then forced to reboot without CM, having wasted all my time.
I downloaded cm-10.1-20121224-NIGHTLY-d2tmo and gapps-jb-20121011-signed
What do I do; where did I go wrong? Sorry for my crappy explanation, but I am not extremely tech savvy.

Is there a specific marketplace you recommend? I use getapk but many of the files are outdated or otherwise unusable
When I use ROM Manager Premium, I press "Download ROM" and it prompts me to install CWM Recovery, but my phone isn't on list of supported devices (there's only SGS3 MetroPCS). Because of this, it won't let me use ROM Manager. What do I do?
I tried installing via ROM Manager, and I had it delete cache/data, etc but it still didn't work. Says
-- Installing: /sdcard/cm-10.1-20121224-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip
Finding update packag...
Opening update packag...
E:Can't open /sdcard/cm-10.1-20121224-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip
(No such file or directory)
installation aborted.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.

Bump
It looks like you might have gotten a corrupt install. Try redownloading it and loading it back on your SD card. Also make sure you have updated and installed any ROM Manager files beforehand

I can successfully install Roms thats I download through Rom Manager, but for some reason I cannot install Roms that I download online, put in my SD card and try to flash through Clockworkmod. The downloaded files are in .zip for and I choose to install zip from SD. When I select it, the screen shows that it is installing but takes only a second and doesnt flash successfully. I dont get any errors but for some reason the Rom just doesnt install. If anyone has had this issue or could help it would be much appreciated, thanks.
nevermind, i figured it out. for some reason the files would only work when i compressed them again. its weird but im glad i got it to work

change the setting on your mac (i know you did not say it was a mac but since this exact thing happened to me i know it must be one) to not "open safe files after downloading" in the preferences - general tab. that way you will not have to zip files again since they get unzipped on downloading.
I have ROM Manager on my phone but as we all know, it does not have many of the ROMS available out there including some of the newer Z roms. I have a new iMac at home and am unsure as to how to push roms to the phone, so I have been relying on qr codes or what is available on rom manager. Is there a way to download a rom, theme or mod file and then somehow create a qr code so that rom manager can upload?
Download them from the phones browser, then in ROM Manager hit Install ROM from SD Card and go to Downloads. Wipe Cache and Data and back up current ROM. DONE! Also there are apps on the Market that make QR Codes.
will try this out...been using SR3.5 and for some reason in rom manager when I select a rom I have to manually reboot the phone into recovery, unlike in other roms the application automatically throws the phone into recovery...seems strange that this happens. I guess as long as I have everything backed up I should be good to go...thanks!

What version of ClockWorkMod Recovery are you running. The newer one is giving people problems with Rom Manager.
2.5.1.2 Also, when I try and flash an older or even a newer version an error message is coming up that says "an error occurred while flashing your recovery". Not too big of a deal though...just one extra step
Just stay on the newest one and manually apply the ROM's until they fix it.
Maybe I do this the long way or something, but I was just mounting the SD card to my laptop then opening the file under My Computer and drag & drop the zip file onto the sd card. Then sometimes when I'm at work and I get the itch, I'll just go to this site on the phone browser and download the link. Another handy way is using Chrome to Phone. Just shoot the download link right over to the phone wirelessly.
^^^^^^
This is what I do as well. Chrome to phone is nice though. To eliminate as many variables as possible I often manually go into Recovery and do it.
Does anyone know if ROM manager wipes the Dalvik cache when clearing cache is selected?
Hi Folks,
I am unable to install google apps (Goolge Market). I have cm-7.0.3 on myTouch Slide and as per the instructions I'm trying to boot into clockwork recovery from ROM Manager, and then do as follows:
1. Open ROM Manager
2. Select “Install Rom from SD Card" and select "gapps-gb-20110613-signed"
As per the istruction it should rebbot and show the installation progress but instead I get an error: “E:can't open /sdcard/gapps-mdpi-20110613-signed.zip (bad) Installation aborted.”
I reflashed cm-7.0.3 and tried installing google apps again but I get the same error. I even tried the latest version of google apps “gapps-gb-20110828-signed”. But nothing works.
Now I am stuck without android market on phone. Could you please help and suggest how to fix this issue or any laternative way of installing Google Market on my phone?
BTW I am new to rooting and flashing process.
Thanks in advance…
Try going into recovery from hboot and install the gapps.
Thanks but it does not work

Thanks for your reply...
I tried installing from clockwork recovery however when I select install zip from SD card option I get a blank screen and it stays there, nothing happens...Now I have updated CM 7.03 to CM 7.1 but it issue still exists...
If I go into android recovery do I need to rename the "gapps-gb-20110613-signed" to "update.zip" so that system recognizes it and it can be installed.
Appreciate your help.
It's working now
I used a brand new Micro SD card it worked , I was able to install the Google Apps from the new Micro SD card. Not sure what the problem was with the old card though
Thanks...
This may seem like a silly question. I found one other thread about something similar but its hard to say what the solution may be because he apparently just reflashed his rom. In any case, I download a zip file that I wanted to flash, while mounted in windows, to the download folder on the phone. I then reboot into recovery to flash the zip, but low and behold I cannot see it through TWRP. On the phone I am looking at /sdcard/download on the computer I am looking at G:\Internal Storage\Download. Strangely enough, other zips that I had previously flashed including the original rom image, show up while browsing in TWRP but not while mounted in windows. I am using a VZW Galaxy Nexus with CM 10.0.0-toro (4.1.2). Any ideas?
EDIT: I did notice that when I tried to select the file from Goo Manager to flash it, and look at the terminal in TWRP that it does in fact try to run it but it says, "Unable to locate zip file '/usb-otg/goomanager/..'"
I have a new T-Mobile Note 2. I installed TWRP and SuperSU using the toolkit. I then used Root Browser and deleted a bunch of apps ("bloatware", I thought), and apparently removed too much, as the phone no longer boots android.
I downloaded the two Tweaked 2.4.1 Rom files, checked Md5sums, OK, and coped same to external SD card. I did the recommended wipes using TWRP. Thereafter, also using TWRP, BasicInstall finishes with success, but the Tweaked.2.4.1.UVBMD1.073113.zip install fails with "E: Unable to open zip file". Then I try to reboot, and get a message "your phone does not appear to be rooted", and take the option "Install SuperSU? That also fails.
I think maybe I can't install Tweaked.2.4.1.UVBMD1.073113.zip because the phone isn''t rooted? Is that right? But I can't figure out how to root the phone either. I'm stuck in a loop. Recommendations to fix appreciated.
Thx, Gus

If you got an unable to open zip file error - even though the md5s check out the only thing I can think of is the zip has become corrupted somehow. Did you check the md5 on a computer and move the file over? Might be worth checking it on the phone (you can use the terminal interface in twrp fwiw - just use the md5sum command).
Bottom line recommendation - try to copy the full zip over to the sdcard again. Also, just to sate my curiosity - did you wipe /system before flashing?

I did recopy the two Tweaked .zip files to the sdcart - repeated attempt to install on phone, same problems.
I also unzipped the two Tweaked files on linux, and although I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to see, there's no errors and a bunch of directories and files that generally look reasonable
I think I did wipe /system on the phone before flashing - could that be my problem? Also, when I go into terminal mode in TWRP on the phone, I get a hang at "Updating partition details"
Is it possible I've accidentally deleted the unzip program on the phone?
Is there stuff I could/should do from an adb shell on my PC through a USB hookup to the phone?
thx, Gus
You could flash stock rom with odin and start over.
Tweaked Out

Hmm... maybe reflash recovery? That's very strange - especially if the first zip worked fine and the second had the issues...

I wish I could! But when I try that it hangs at "Waiting for USB debugging to be enabled". And that's even if the phone is booted into download mode.

Odin back to stock. Twrp started failing everything I tried to flash also. That's why I stopped using it. But you need to Odin to stock

Finally got it working. dwitherell was more or less right about the problem. Here's my steps: 1) did a low-level format on the external sda card 2) recopied the two Tweaked zip files onto the external sda card 3) Cheked md5sums for both files on the external sda card 4) ainstalled from TWRP, as before. BUT - this time it worked.
I'm guessing either the external sda card or one of the zip files was corrupted - as dwitherell had suggested. Thanks to him and other forum members for helping out.
