Man, this thing is so annoying. I have a habit of double-tapping the home button to get to my desktop and I suppose the new function goes to Voice Talk. I don't want it to go there and I can't remove/remap it. Any clue on how to get rid of it?
yah thats in settings, go to motions in settings and uncheck double tap! that should fix it
You'll have to wait till our phones get rooted to completely remove any stock apps.

That does not fix it for me, I have all motion turned off, and still get the vlingo terms of service when I double tap home. Which I then decline every time. Very Annoying.
Same issue here. I want it to behave like Sense and display all of my homescreens (zoomed out). What does the 'home' key have to do with Voice Talk and Vlingo anyway?!
What would u like to do ???
Lol cant get it off either
Tmo Galaxy S2
Damn near a deal breaker
I like the plain voice commands from android and I'd like to do what I've been doing for the last couple of years - push the headset button, say what I want and have it just happen. I'm going to play with this a while longer but I'm going to give the phone back if it doesn't work exactly like I want. It's too much money to live with like I did the Vibrant - till the guys here made it work.
I don't mind something being no removable if there's an option to use something else. If any of you know how to change the settings so the original vlingo by Samsung isn't the automatic choice, that would be greatly appreciated.
Yep checked off double tap and it still goes into voice talk

UNinstall voice command-voice talk- voice search using titanium backup if rooted. if not rooted- see previous posts.
I prefer the vlingo app from market(which needs voice search app, also available in market).

It's been gone since the first update from when the phone was released... I don't know exactly which update, but I noticed it being gone after an OTA.
One easy way if your running ICS is to install go Launcher, open app drawer, long press voice command icon, un install, Vlingo gone! Un install go Launcher. No rooting required.
HOLY SHII
This solution that GDF01 is talking about, is not only very easy, but also very awesome! I removed Voice talk and Chat and other stuff, and i ICS-froze Readers Hub and all that stuff, so now I have a fully functional and great phone, without rooting or anything! Thanks!!
Hey everyone I tried doing some searching but these words are pretty common so I couldn't find much.
The problem is that I know that by pressing and holding the menu button I get to the search function but the problem is that it doesn't give me the launch menu like it did on my S2 t989 for example when I held the search key on my S2 t989 a "which app would you like to do this in" menu would come up that would give me direct access to apps like shazam, soundhound, and screencast. Is that feature completely gone or do I have to enable a setting or something for this? I really loved having that menu there.
Also another question about the search function that does come up. It does not seem to be the same full search function from before but only for the web. I used to be able to search the apps that are actually on my phone and launch them through that menu as well. Is that possible anymore or has that been disabled too?
Don't get me wrong I LOVE this phone so much I just miss those couple little things. Thanks!
Thank crapple for the change in search function. If you are rooted go to /system/app and find GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk. renameto remove the __USA part.
Dont know bout the other. Sorry.

Thanks for the quick reply and help. I am rooted and I am actually running FreeGS3 and in my /system/app folder there is only "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" there isn't one with "_USA" on it.
Thats odd. I know that used to work. Maybe im forgetting a step, though I dont think I am.

CM10 has settings under system where you can change the menu button long press action to in-app search.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
At some point whatever action you're trying to do you probably checked the "use as default" box and now you don't get the choice. I still get to choose which app I use for most things, not sure how to go back and remove the default though.

you can do it throught Google Gow. just go into Google Now>settings>phone search> and select what you want it to search.
I just loaded a custom ROM but when it asked what app to use it gave me this popup.
Clear default app settings by going to Settings>Applications manager>All
I tried this in the 4.2 thread, but there was too much activity and it got lost. consequently, can someone with 4.2 installed test this?
the command of "set timer for XXX minutes". Does this use the new timer app or still set an alarm?

Running 4.2 it simply set an alarm called 'timer'. However I believe this is an app fault, not the OS. Google may release an update to the Google Search app to account for this.

I was afraid of that. It annoys me that they didn't bother to update voice search to interface with the new timer app. oh well.
Hi there.
I thought my only issue with the Note 2 was the driver issues some are experiencing. Now that I avoid it by plugging into my Win7 machine, rather than my Vista machine, that problem is no more.
But recently another issue I thought was minor is really starting to aggravate me now. For some reason, ever since Jelly Bean came around (even on my G-Nexus) I have had issues with default apps saving.
For example, when browsing either using Chrome or the stock Internet browser, I select an IMdB link and a pop up window appears asking what default app I would like to address these link types. I select the IMdB app, and ALWAYS.....then a window pops up showing how to clear defaults which I have to hit: OK. So all in all, I have to hit 3 or 4 more buttons after selecting a link.
The next time I select an IMdB link, I have to do the process all over again......meaning Android is not saving my selected default apps. I thought it might be app specific, but this issue is happening with nearly any default I select. It also doesn't have to be a reboot that wipes my choices......it just never remembers. Same with YouTube, and other apps I choose for defaults.....they don't stick.
The only defaults that work are some non-Google/system based app to app default choices. By this I mean, in ES File Explorer, if I select a default video player, image viewer, text viewer, or audio player they stick. Meaning, if I pick an image while in ES, QuickPic automatically opens. A video, MXPlayer opens etc.
The issue only seems to happen with system or google apps, but is consistent. This problem is getting very annoying, and my google searches over the last couple days have yielded me nothing helpful.
My question is this, has anyone seen this before, and if so do they have a possible workaround or solution they could suggest? Thank you much, in advance.
I have the same issue and started a thread for it... I didn't get any answers

Hmmmm. Thats not the news I wanted to hear lol. Ive managed to work around my problem a little by installing Default App Manager Pro and then installing Opera mobile and setting it as default browser app. I get far fewer pop ups and at least the imdb page on Opera is close to the app. As well, if I search something and it goes to a YouTube link it first goes to the browser page but as soon as I touch the video to play it, the YouTube app opens. Not perfect but far better than being asked to set defaults EVERY time I search the internet, then having my defaults ignored and asked again.....and again.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
Is using that app the only solution for this?
I got my wife a Note 2 yesterday, and each time we've rebooted it, it forgets what we chose for the default app, going back to the stock launcher, and no longer using SwiftKey by default.
Each and every time... re-selecting the things she wants... Quite aggravating.
I never had this issue on my S3
I'm wondering if you have installed custom roms or mods. If so, have you tried going to recovery manager and running :fix permissions:? My thinking is that maybe it's trying to write to a read only file and failing silently. Thus the next time it reads default apps, there are no defined preferences.
I don't know for sure that's even the case, but it would make sense logically on any system.

Right now, it's happening to be on a brand new vanilla Note 2
Is rooting my phone and nuking the default .apk's the only option to fix this problem?
Hate to bump an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue. Every time I reboot all of my default apps disappear and I have to choose them again. They seem to last for the entire session. Stock rom but rooted.
Defaults not saving

Same here....6 week old Note 2, not rooted. It is saving virtually no default programs...not the launcher, the browser, not documents. Seems that if there are more than one app that COULD open a file, Note 2 will ask for the preferred app, regardless of whether a default had been previously saved / set or not.
Bummer. I did try using a "Default App Manager", went through the process of setting my selected defaults...made absolutely no difference at all!
Judi
If you are on a custom ROM I do not know what to tell you. If you are on stock each time you install or uninstall an app that will perform an action when you click on something the Note will ask if you want to do it once or always. So if you install a new browser and you click on a link it will ask which browser you want to use. If you then uninstall a browser the next time you click on a link you will be asked again. If you are being asked more than that then there is a problem somewhere. If a factory reset does not work and you are still under warranty I would call and find out if that is something that is covered. I wish I knew off hand which app keeps track of your defaults then you could just clear that app and see if that helps.
This is happening on my stock galaxy s4 for t-mobile.. app defaults are not saving. I think it's a broader problem than just the note 2.
Wondering if anyone has found a solution or made any progress????

I don't get the point of having the "OK, Google" if I can't use it on any screen except when I actually open Google Now. I was hugely let down by the lack of "always listening" but what is the point of having this if I need to open up a specific program just to set an alarm with my voice?
How do I "OK, Google. Set an alarm for 30 minutes" without actually opening up the god damn Google Now?
I am so disappointed in this lack of feature or my lack of knowledge.

Bro you lost me when you started talking about "god damn google now"...is it really that serious of an issue to bring your lord and savior into it. So I figured I would really get you riled up Smurphy And it worked lol.
Anyway see my thanks meter compared to yours before you bash for not helping the XDA community. Bye now....
Anyways, I had to put that guy above on the ignore list for both wasting this threads time and just being rude.
If you hold the home button, then swipe up it launches Google Now, so that will be how I access it until active listening from the home screen when the phone is on is one day enable or someone does an extension.
Thanks to anyone but the guy I had to block.

Do a google search for the apk. You should be able to side load it.
You can then use ok google on the home screens, but still nowhere else.
You can download the Google now Launcher (googlehome.apk) from numerous threads here on xda, any gapps zip download for aosp, and many places on the internet. That's the only way to do it and you won't get BlinkFeed either :/ otherwise gotta deal with the home buttoness

Thank you both kindly! I may do that if I find the "hold home, swipe up" can be improved upon.
Have a great day, and if I do side load it and test it I will replay back and edit my original post to include that and state how it works.

As far as I'm aware, it could only be done with certain apps (like the mic+ app linked in the above post) or from installing the Google Now launcher. That means you won't be able to run Sense though so if you really want to carry on using Sense you'll need to use one of the aforementioned apps instead.
It's a shame that HTC didn't implement such a feature to be honest, especially considering they made it possible to use Ok Google commands once on the Google Now app. I guess it's officially limited to certain Nexus devices though.

Thank you for this. I tried installing it and messing with it in many ways, but it only recognizes my "Okay, Google" about 10% of the time (I tried both engines) and even when it does recognize my "Okay, Google" from a home screen it takes about 5-10 seconds for it to launch, thus by the time it launches I have either thought it failed since it took so long or I said "Okay, Google" 3 times already by the time it launches.
Thank you anyways, it just doesn’t work well with this phone maybe. Pretty disappointing since the processor it has is able to do always listening or at least home screen listening.
