There is absolutely no sound when I make a call or receive a call on my Evo 4g. The sound works fine on speaker and notifications and ringtones work as well. I recently rooted it using the revolutionary method and cant seem to figure out the issue. I have been using Mikg rom 2.61 but have tried flashing back to stock.
Any Ideas? sorry if this has been posted before
It's probably a hardware issue. I had an old slider phone that did the same thing, only worked on speaker.
You can unroot and take it in to Sprint and have them take a look at it if you can't find another solution.

well i'm confused because the sound works on everything else so it makes me think that it isn't a hardware issue. I however have no idea and would appreciate any ideas how to fix this
Did u make sure your incall volume was set in settings as well as thru the volume rocker I've found a few ROM's that had incall volume in the tweaks and even tho my volume rocker was up it was still really quiet until I turned the volume up in tweaks/settings

i recently had the same issue. when i answered the phone it went straight to speaker. i couldnt find any solution in the settings. before making a drastic decision like switching ROMS. i decided to shut off my phone. unplug the battery for a minute and rebooted. that was the soluiton. sometimes we as moders overlook the obvious.

The volume through the earpiece and the volume through the speaker are different speakers, unless I'm mistaken. Your notifications, ringtones, music, and putting it on speaker during a call all use the speaker on the back of the phone. The in-call volume is the only thing that uses the earpiece. Even if the two speakers are connected, it could still be a hardware issue.
There's an app that controls volume, and it has an option to turn the media volume lower than 0, which then routes the volume through the earpiece. I don't remember the name or where I saw it, but if you can find it then you could use it to diagnose.
If you run an RUU and the problem still persists, then it's most likely a hardware problem. At that point I would unroot and take it into Sprint for a replacement... unless you think you can replace it yourself.

I'm having the same issue, but it was working before I rooted it with revolutionary. After unrooting it stopped working back to stock. Why is that? Mind you I am now with metro pcs and the evo is new.
Do you guys have a car symbol in the notifaction bar?
If not, the ear speaker is easy and cheap to replace. Just search on eBay and you'll be able to find ones that give you a screwdriver to open the evo

The in-call volume is really really low, is there anyway to solve this?
I was just about to make this topic. Seconded. It's so hard to hear people when in call. There has to be some sort of sound boost.
Nice and simple, nope there is no way to increase the incall volume atm. What might work is that super old trick where you call your voicemail in WM and put it in speaker and then boot into android and that maybe would still work on these builds, don't blame me if I'm wrong because its been months since I've even tried this so good luck if it works for ya

Not yet really. There are rumors of an audio boost of some kind for incall coming soon. U can try the volume controller app from the marketplace and see if that does anything.

I think this has something to do with the missing sound adjustment .csv's in /system/etc. I doubled checked on my G1 running 2.1 and it definitely has them.
Some of you may have this problem, some of you may not, but me and my cousin have this problem with our G2 where the sound from the other line is very quiet for us when we use the phone... as a phone. So what I want to know is, is there any way to increase the sound on for this? Do we have defected phones?
I have this problem as well. In call volume is maxed out but it doesn't sound very loud at all.
I have root access with CM 6.1.0 RC3.
My calls are loud and clear. Its the speaker phone thats low for me.
Does it happen with all calls incoming and out going?
Also are you on wifi?
How is your signal strength?
Same with me my speak phone volume is lower than I would like it, but head set speaker loud and clear

Yes, it's all of the calls that I make and receive. I'm never on wifi and my signal strength during the calls are all good. It may be just me also, but the G2 mic may be quiet also because when I call my cousin he sounds like he's whispering to me but when I call someone else their sound is just quiet, but enough to hear it with a small bit of background noise. I haven't asked him how the sound was when I called him since it's something I just noticed.
Mine's a little soft as well. It kinda sucks that one of the few flaws with this phone is it's use as a phone, lol.

You sure the phone volume is up? Also have you called Tmobile about this?
I have had mine for a little over a month and it is loud and clear, I have no issues hearing anyone, and no one has issues hearing me... really good sound quality imo. I am on stock rom still. Speakerphone is very weak for me as well.
Yeah, in call phone volume is incredibly weak for me. Going to try to boot into stock and see what happens. Is there an app to make the volume louder? Or some way we can change it?
EDIT: Okay. Turns out that I am an idiot. Phone is still new for me so I left the default protective screen on. As soon as I took that off, phone calls were a lot more clear. Just ordered a proper screen protector so I just have to be careful until then haha. Don't know if this will help out anyone but hey, figured I let you guys know.
You know, the real problem with the G2 is HTC quality control on those. I'm on my second G2...the call volume is way lower than my first one...
also the keyboard is a LOT better on the second one, I didn't care at all about the keyboard on my first G2, as the keys were very recessed and didn't have a real "feedback", so I never used it. Made me think the whole keyboard thing about the phone was useless, now I'm in love with it.
My problem is the hinge on the second G2 is much looser than the first one.
If you bought yours recently, just exchange it.

I'm positive the phone volume up. I haven't called T-Mobile yet because I haven't had time.
Ditto on the in call volume, would like to boost.
Anyone try this app Louder Volume Hack v4.1?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.AutoMod
I came from an HTC Aria and had the same in call sound trouble, then I tried Louder Volume Hack v3.6 but no luck, did not work.
Instead after some other searching I found a XDA forum that suggested turning on the TTY for the Hearing Impaired option in the Aria and waa-laa ---it worked. Apparently though, this TTY / Hearing Imparied option does not exist in the SOUND settings for the Z.
So, still looking for idea on the in call volume boost.

Theres an app called DSP Manager on CM 6.1.1 that i used to up the voume a whole lot. It comes already installed when you install that rom.
My speaker works great except during a call. I can't hear a thing from it when on a call however. It must be a software issue, then. I started a thread a bit back, but with no luck. I hope we can find a fix.
my in ear sound isnt that loud either.
Ok...regarding the app called DSP Manager on CM 6.1.1, I checked into this, but is appears it only helps on the "media" volume but NOT the phone speaker or in call volume for when the phone is to my ear during a call.
Can you advise, is DSP Manager helping for this in call volume?
Ok...
I found 3 different versions of DSP manager and frankly am afraid to install w/o having a little more dialog with some of you that may be wiser than me.
The three files are attached and as listed are:
DSPManager120210_ALL.zip
DSPManager_080910.apk
DSPManager_100810.zip
The DSPManager120210_ALL.zip file came from this link and appears to the the latest
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_DSPManager
The APK file came from this XDA link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750765
Anyway, after looking at the DSPManager_100810.zip file in unzipped mode, the file structure is different than the other zip file, which makes me a little nervous to flash uisng ROM Manager of Clockworkmod.
Meanwhile, I may install the APK file because I can easily uninstall if there is no improvement in the IN CALL VOLUME.
Any insights are welcomed.
Well I dove in and thank goodness for NAND backups...
Here is the deal (as of 12/31/10 4:05 PM EST):
- DSPManager120210_ALL.zip DID NOT FLASH
- DSPManager_080910.apk INSTALLED BUT NO CHANGE ON MY DESIRE Z A7275
- DSPManager_100810.zip FLASHED BUT NO EAR PEICE SOUND NOR SPEAKER SOUND
Now as of 12/31/10 4:11 PM EST in an restoring from my 12/31/10 10:00 AM EST NAND backup.
Gosh I hate doing this trial and error stuff, talk about a heart attack.
Will update after I complete my full restore and hope all is back in fully operational order.

The lock screen sounds are a system sound. I use volume manager from the market and turn it up and down in there.
No i did the 3.7 update and now when i click on the lock button my phone wont make the lock sound, well it does but you cant hear it like how it use to, i just got the rear speaker replaced and music and ringer works just fine, and when i dial numbers it doesnt make that sounds either
Ok sorry to all, i figured it out, some how my system volume was turn down, and my dumb ass didnt know how to turn it up lol, thanks for the app, that helped
I've had my DHD since they came out last November and I've had no real issues with it in all that time. However, I've now got a hugely annoying issue with sound where all sound, ringtones, music etc, comes through distorted at max volume where before it was clear. The obvious suggestion is to turn the volume down but even two steps down from max. volume it still happens depending on the sound coming from the speaker. I don't know how else to describe it except perhaps tearing and that doesn't sound very accurate to what is happening.
I don't remember when this first started happening but I'm pretty sure it was a few months ago and I was using a Sense based ROM at the time. The issue got so bad that instead of playing distorted sound in Sense it would just cut out and all sound would stop for what seemed like two or three minutes. Switching to CM7 has prevented it cutting out but the distortion is still there so I don't think it's related to a specific ROM unless it's a volume boost that was done over all ROM builds. As anyone who owns a DHD will know the audio has always been a little on the quiet sound but the level I have the volume at now is below what I'm comfortable with.
Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this audio issue? It's almost to the point now where I'm thinking of going back to stock and sending it in for repairs. Don't make me do that.. you know it's not a fun process.
I'm only replying to this in case anyone has similar issues so they can see my resolution. Unfortunately it's gotten worse, to the point that I lost all sound on all ROMs bar a few squeaks from the speaker. The in-call speaker worked fine and I could make calls with no issue but no notifications, alerts, alarms etc would sound on the external speaker.
I flashed back to stock Gingerbread and I've sent my phone off to HTC, via T-Mobile UK, to be repaired. I'm also hoping they fix the misaligned camera issue too. I'm a little worried because despite trying I could not get S-ON back before I took it in but it's using stock bootloader and an HTC RUU ROM. Anyway, I'm basically saying that it's a bad sign and will have to go in for repairs. Hopefully this will save anyone from wondering in the future if they get the same sort of issue.
I'm having the same problem.. I think.. if you are talking about the speaker that you make the phonecalls with.. not the "external" speaker.. that works fine..
it has a crackling sound with mine.
Sounds like the external speaker is busted. You already send it to repair, probably that's the only solutions.
Right, here’s the situation, I replaced the screen on my HTC Desire HD a few days ago and literally the first boot since there was a Wifi notification of a ROM update also, so I did it... (Orange UK Software number 3.13.61.5) anyway, since replacing the screen / updating the ROM, the Microphone has gone ridiculously quiet when making or receiving a phone call and if I open the Voice recorder, I can barely hear my recorded voice back, and the only way people can hear me when I call them is if they put it on loudspeaker and still put the phone to their ear...
Ok so initially I thought that this might be a hardware issue as I have been in the phone, however, given the fact that I can hear some playback via voice recorder, this means that the Microphone is working..?
So after a bit more investigation, I found that if I remove the bottom panel that covers the SD Card and Sim Card slots, then Voice recorder works perfectly (but my signal drops off completely so I can't test a phone call... *Are the 2 little gold contacts to do with the antenna?*) So I have come to the conclusion that it must be software? As obviously when these 2 little gold contacts make connection with the phone again, ye it enables me to make a phone call, but wrecks the microphone...
On a side note, I have checked the little Microphone hole on that bottom panel and shoved a pin through it and it’s as clean as a whistle so it can't be a blockage of any sort...
So something is happening when the bottom panel is on the phone, those 2 gold contacts tell the phone to do something? Provide an antenna for it but in doing so almost muting the microphone at the same time..?
Any ideas on how I can fix this or where shall I start? Could this still be a hardware issue? Shall I strip the phone down again and pay special attention to a specific part? :S
Please Help!?
Thanks in advance!
Adam.
which rom are you using? if that's a stock rom, it is highly recommended that you try one of the custom ones from development section (sense 3.5 roms)
Yes, its a stock ROM that was pushed OTA... It's a friends phone, I have a HD2 so I'm very familiar with flashing roms etc... but I'm going through the custom roms section and I can't seem to be able to find a good guide as a starting point..? I see a lot about Downgrading? and S-Off..? (Does that mean Signature Off?)
Thanks very much for the reply though!
Ok... I've flashed a custom ROM now, and a different radio '[ROM] Android Revolution HD 7.0.3 | High Quality & Performance | O/C | Legendary' is the rom I used...
Exactly the same... It's as if the microphone level is right down when the phone has signal/network as if I shout the voice recorder picks stuff up then...
Is there an App I can use to tweak the gain or something on the Mic levels?
I've had the phone in bits again and cleaned out everywhere, theres no dust build up or anything of the sort so I'm sure its not hardware related... but then if the ROM is completely different then it can't be software either can it..? :S
Cheers, Adam.

I'm no expert on electricity and all that but can it be possible that the power input onto the mic is being too low so that it is not functioning properly due to a newer screen sucking up a higher power? but then you mentioned that by removing those plates, it works fine...
I couldn't come across a fix as it seems that not many people had this problem so it seems that it is more of a hardware problem but i'll post asap i find something
EDIT: maybe this
Thanks for the reply! I can't understand what it could be... I have figured out though that if I hold the phone horizontally in front of my mouth and talk then it works... so I'm completely stumped as to what it could be...
Is there no way I can edit some sensitivity figure somewhere? :S

Hi All
I have had the same issue with no mic imput when calling someone on a HTC Desire 500 phone.
My problem started when I paired a plantronics bluetooth hands free device to my phone and started to use it.
While using the PK100 device all was perfect and no issues, but when I turned off the hands free device I now have the same issue no one can her me through the phone mic, no sound at all. I believe this issue is both software and hardware the software needs to switch the hardware (mic) on and off
It is as if the mic has been switched off by the (PK100) bluetooth hands free but the software on the phone is not re-enabling the phone mic so now I am in a situation where i can only use my phone via a diferent mic headphones or PK100 hands free.
I can also add that while in a call I have the option to switch from the hands free on the phone, or to use the phone or to use the PK100 from an in call option all works ok but the mic on the phone will not reactivate. this seems to be an issue with the software not activating the mic.
If anyone has any idea I would like to here...
