[TUT]Custom mtd partitions - HTC Wildfire S

After tons of googling ive finally been able to customize the size of my data partition.
Im sharing it with you all...
Install Instuctions
It really is quite simple
1.download FR-recovery-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip and FR-boot-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip
2.create mtdpartmap.txt and put on /sdcard/ see configuration *
3.reboot to recovery
4.nandbackup
5.wipe cache + data
6.flash FR-recovery-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip(follow onscreen instructions)
7.reboot to recovery
8.Either : -
Nandrestore
or
Flash ROM + extras
9.flash FR-boot-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip
10.reboot
*For cyanogenmod- write "mtd 135 15"
this will give ur system 135mb, cache 15 mb and rest for data!!!!(u can change the values but be sure u give enough to system otherwise ull face problems while flashing)
NOTE-each time u flash a rom u MUST flash FR-boot-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip.
NOTE-if u reduce cache size by a large amount, market and other apps depending on cache will fc.
credits-Firerat for the files and instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717874
as sense roms are heavy...this wouldnt be of much help.
PS-as always im not responsible if u brick ur device.
PRESS THANKS IF IT HELPED!

Can someone test this please? To OP: does it work?
Want to do it, but don't want a bricked phone.
I just need a 100 mb more for data, so i dont need the build in "move to sd" option from android.

Chicken. As I wrote in the other thread....it works.
Be careful not to undersize your Cache partition though or Market and other apps that rely on it for temp storage will force close.
The guy that said he uses a 10 MB cache partition is on better drugs than I can afford...

dude,
i followed all the mentioned steps by letter but unfortunately i still have the stock part intact
1-copied the files to Sd
2-creating the text file mtd 150 25
3-flashed the recovery attached
4-flashed the rom (caynogenmod 7)
5- flashed the boot file
still have the original partitions :S i am missing smthing ?

Yes.
First this is a confusing and partially explained tutorial...No offense. Here it is for CM7.x with updated script files and an mtdpartmap.txt for CM7.x
1/ Create the txt file and do not hit enter. Make sure there is no carriage return taking you to a second line.
2/Now save it as "mtdpartmap.txt" (For CM7x you can use 145 20 with no worries).
3/ Copy the recovery file, the boot file and the mtdpartmap.txt files to the root of your SD card
4/Copy Alquez's latest nightyly CM7 zip to the root of your SD card along with the latest gapps zip
5/Reboot to recovery
6/ Erase user data
7/ Under Mounts, format system
8/ Install zip from SD card and run the Recovery zip
9/ Go back to mounts and format data, cache and system partitions
10/ Go to advanced menu and reboot to recovery
11/ If you are restoring a NANDROID backup do so now using backup/restore
12/ If you are installing CM7.x Install zip from SD and flash the CM7 zip and the gapps zip
13/ Install zip from SD card and now flash the boot zip.
14/ Return to recovery main menu and reboot device
15/ Enjoy your roomy CM7.x install!
Don't listen to 135 for CM7! It's not close to enough.

Will it work with Wildfire S with unlocked bootloader (via HTC webpage)? Or is it only for S-OFF phones?
I have the bootloader unlocked and it seems that it does not work :-( Maybe I am doing something wrong?

Y not 250 20?
HTC WILDFIRE S
Cm7

@ d33spx the tutorial is perfect and complete.the steps u posted are unnecessary.
@everyone with s on but bl unlocked: it won't work.
@everyone with soff and cyanogen mod: 135 15 is more than enough...
For sense roms which are debloated 250 20 is good...

135 means I'll have Oly 135 MB internal?

You need to flash flash "FR-boot-v1.5.7-CustomMTD_S.zip" immediately after flashing a new ROM or Restoring any nandroid backup before restarting your device. This will keep your partitions.
Cheers!!

What mtdpartmap would you recommend for modpunks CM9?

[Q] A few questions I need answered

I have a few questions:
1) Which is better? The Cyanogenmod 7 or The Nightly builds?
2) I really like the Sense UI. After flashing Cyanogenmod 7, can I change my "theme" to Sense UI?
3) Which ROMs you can recommend me? I like to use the Sense UI. So till the time ROMs have Sense UI, I'm cool with it. Most of the ROMs I see have different themes which I kinda don't like. I got a few other ROMs with Sense UI but they needed to do some partition in the SD card and stuff which didn't really go inside my brain
4) After performing a Nandroid backup, I should flash my rom. So why do a few devices get bricked? Can't they just restore the backup and be back to normal version again?
5) After rooting, should I connect my phone to any HTC online services?
6) If HTC future updates come out and I'm on my rooted phone then will the update automatically install itself or I need to backup to the original version and then update my phone?
Sorry, I'm really new to all this. So please don't flame me
Hi !
1) You may go with the nightly builds, they seem to be quite stable as a daily rom. You can reflash an old build if one is buggy anyway.
2) You can't switch to Sense UI with a Cyanogen 7 installation, but you can install Launcher Pro or another launcher and then apply a theme that looks like Sense.
3) Leedroid is by far the most known Sense rom on Desire. You can also look after Teppic74's rom and addons which are also nice if you don't want a rom that has an infinite nomber of addons or changes.
4) Pay attention not to change your recovery when you backup an old rom. You have to restore with the same recovery you backed up your rom.
5) You must be talking about HTCsense.com, this online service has appeared with Desire HD and Z, it isn't available on our Desire Froyo roms at the moment. If you want to try HD Roms and others with a later version of Sense UI, you won't be forced to connect to this service.
6) When a future updates come out, if you want to install a stock RUU, you'll only have to create a goldcard before installing the RUU. No matter your Desire is rooted or not, after the RUU install, you will be S-ON and unrooted.
But you should wait for developers to release roms with the new HTC update, therefore you won't have to root and S-OFF your device again.
Welcome on XDA
Hey, thanks for replying mate
I didn't understand the 4th point. Sorry I'm a noob at this
for the fifth point, I was talking about sync and other services.
Sorry, I misunderstood your 4).
Your device won't get bricked if you pay attention to what you are doing when flashing.
Make sure before any flash to :
- Check the MD5 hash of your rom
- Wipe Data, Cache, Dalbik-Cache when it is needed

- Turn off your phone, press volume down+power button to boot into bootloader and select RECOVERY.
- Wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache

Sorry, but imho your guide is incomplete. I write the necessary new things in red:
- Download .zip : http://leedroid.ftp.rshost.eu/Bravo-ROMs/LeeDrOiD_V2.4.1_A2SD.zip
- Copy your .zip on your SD card
- Backup/copy all data of sd-card on your computer, just in case;
- Root your phone with Unrevoked (you can find some tutorials around here): noob-guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084; for advanced users: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
- Save your systemdata and apps; i recommend Titanium Backup (Menu>Batch>”Backup all systemdata and apps”).
- Turn off your phone, press volume down+power button to boot into bootloader and select RECOVERY.
- Made a full nandroid-backup. Reboot your phone. Copy all data on the sd-card to your computer again.
- Turn off your phone, press volume down+power button to boot into bootloader and select Recovery; now select "partition sd-card" and then "partition sd". Set 0 MB for SWAP, 512 MB for ext3 and rest for FAT32. If you cannot create ext3, create ext2. After complete partitioning, select "SD: ext2 to ext3". Now go back and select "USB-MS-Toggle". Now copy all the saved data back on your sd-card. Is this complete, select "other" and "toggle signature verify".
- Wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache
- Flash Leedroid's rom.
- Restore all missing systemdata and apps (Titanium Backup>Menu>Batch>"Restore all missing systemdata and apps").
- Restart phone
First start can take some time, because all apps were moved to the sd-card.
Never post such incomplete guides, please.
My bad, I gave him an incomplete guide, but there are also plenty of them around this forum and Google.
Searching isn't hard : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Thank you for your replies guys
Also, will the tutorial work with Cool Sense? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=899943)
It will, don't forget to flash this .zip : http://wbss.ro/coolexe/Extra/Alignment_Cool.zip before installing the rom. (This .zip will convert your ext3 partition on your sd to ext4, and it will also align that partition)
Okay And what's the use of partitioning the SD? Does it increase the Storage space (Internal Memory)? I saw it on one of the ROMs. Not sure which.
And what are radios?
The Radio of your device is the thing which makes it possible to call and to have mobile internet. And some radios should be better than others, so they should increase battery life or so but i never felt a difference with different radios yet.

The use of partioning is, that u are able to save data on the sd.
If you ask, why you should do it with this ext3- partition (i do not know why you need swap-partition; i just set it to 0 MB, as i was told ): With this ext3- partion all apps you install are automatically moved on the sd-card, wether the programmer has destined it or not. On this way you consume less space internal memory, by what you save/increase indirectly internal memory. This function is available for roms with apps2sd(a2d).
If you really what to increase your internal memory, you need data2sd (also available in some roms here). Here ALL data were moved to your sd-card without exception and the system is leaded to believe that the free internal space is the free space on your sd-card. On this way you increase your internal memory directly, and you will never have any save problems any more.
The question about the radio was already answered.
That sounds really good! Thanks

How to install baadnwz InsertCoin CM7/STOCK?

Hey,
So Im new to the whole rooting/custom ROM area after moving to android from iOS (Best decision ever.).
I've managed to root my HTC Desire using unrevoked, so its fully rooted. But I want to install the baadnwz InsertCoin CM7/STOCK ROM to my Desire. As my mate recommended it too me.
It's located here: (Im not allowed to post links... Just google:
Code:
baadnwz InsertCoin CM7/STOCK v45
I havent got a clue wheere to start tbh.. I would definetly prefer to keep all my apps/contacts/messages and not do a reinstall, if possible.
Thanks in advance!
Tim
1. Backup all apps&data with Titanium Backup/My Backup Root
2. Go to recovery and do a nandroid backup
3. Put ROM's zip to sdcard
4. In recovery, Wipe all userdata and wipe dalvik cache
5. Install ROM's zip
6. Boot up
7. Install app what you used to back up and restore all apps
Wow thansk for the quick reply!
I've got titanium backup, will it backup EVERYTHING? So I basically have the same phone, with a few added features of the Custom ROM?
Also, do I not need to use ROM Manager at all?
Before you flash the ROM:
From what I get it (and I just flashed successfully v45 twice), you need:
1. ext3/4 partition after your fat32 on the sdcard (can be done manually by gparted or by ClockWorkMod in the menus)
2. s-off (using alpharev's iso on a stock rom, and from what I understand, it is necessary for v45.)
3. CM7 partition table (fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl-cm7.img, fastboot reboot-bootloader, fastboot erase cache. You get the image file from alpharev's site)
4. Clockworkmod 3.2 (alpharev gives you 2.5, you need to flash a new one or fakeflash it)
Only after that you flash the ROM.
-If you use free titanium backup u need to back up all apps one by one
-Yep, same phone with extra features
-No need for Rom manager
Thanks Q, forgot to mention those things
And if you don't want to flash CM7 partition sizes, just download A2SD version of insertcoin
Hey guys,
I was trying to install this INSERT COIN ROM (I had one of the previous versions) without any progress for a couple of days, untill I ran on this thread.
So I saw that I needed CWM 3...
(My issue was that I was not able to increase the internal phone storage via the ext4 partition.)
Did a search in the forum and found a link on how to flash it via ROM manager. It all went well, but downgraded my CWM version to 2.5.0.7 i think... And on the same thread a guy posted that he did a image flash from a Terminal Emulator.... Soooo... I decided to give it a try... I did everything and nothing happened...
What I thought of doing next was flashing a simple ROM before doing everything all over again. I got into bootloader (power off button and volume down) and when in go to recovery it gets stuck on the startup screen.
I'm sory if it is not the right place to ask, but I do not know what to do... Phone loads normaly, but without recovery...
And I am helpless right now...
Please, anyone advise how to proceed.
Thanks so much.
1. Is your phone rooted?
2. Is your phone s-off?
3. What do you see on the recovery stuck screen? (Is it a phone with a red triangle on it?)

The phone is both rooted and S-OFF.
I see the splash screen of AlphaRev and nothing more... Nothing happens, but when I remove the battery, insert it again and start it the phone loads. There is just no RECOVERY option.
Once you press Power+Vol Down, instead of going to recovery, go to fastboot mode, connect device to usb, and on your computer:
fastboot flash recovery image-file-of-new-recovery.img
where "image-file-of-new-recovery.img" is the image of cwm-2.5 or cwm-3.2.
Good luck, cross fingers, and no warranty provided

Thanks, man. I'll give it a try & give feedback.
Summarizing the stages: (SERVED WITHOUT WARRANTY!!!)
SD Card partition table (purposed): (8GB)
7 GB FAT32
1 GB ext3/4 (without journaling!)
Then you need:
1. Root (I assume you have, use unrevoked otherwise)
2. Backup all
3. flash a stock rom
4. Use alpharev's iso to s-off
5. Rewrite partition table (internal phone partitions, not sdcard): fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl-cm7.img , fastboot reboot-bootloader , fastboot erase cache
6. Wipe all
7. flash ClockWorkMod 3.2 or fakeflash it.
8. flash InsertCoin ROM itself.
9. recommend to flash a new radio (fastboot flash radio radio_image.img)
(Ofcourse, if you already done some of these, just skip)
Correct me if I missed a thing!

Okay then... Why do you need an separate 1GB ext3? On the previous INSERTCOIN I was using it was for app2sd, so I guess that this version does not support that.
And if that is the case... I fill a lot more relieved and dumber because I did everything right.
So if that is the issue, then if you get low on space? Move them to SD or there is some other trick?
Sory once again for the dumb questions.
Yes, that ext3 is for app2sd.
If you are low on space how much exactly do you have free internal memory?
Well, I have about 200MB now on a freshly flashed ROM. But i thought that it would be more, since on the previous INSERTCOIN that I had was about twice as much.
Does that mean that your InsertCoin installation is complete?

Question related to flashing Sunaabh Rom

Hi all,
I was using the CM7 nightly 203, with the custom MTD partition 140 40. Just wanted to try Sunaabh ROM. Wil the old MTD partition give problems when i flash this new ROM? This ROM is 122MB in size. plz explain how to go abt in flashing this sense rom
Yes, it will. Sense ROMs need upwards of 200MB system partition. You will have to remove the Custom MTD Partitions before proceeding. (It can be removed by flashing Clockworkmod Recovery again, after wiping everything)
Thanks for the prompt reply I have not done that even once.. For this, i must go to ROM manager, Click on Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery and then press "Flash Recovery." Or if am wrong, could you pls explain me?
Not sure if this will work for you too but it did for me, I first changed the settings in the txt file then flashed a new rom and ran the bravo boot zip again.
I did that going from cm7 to sfm and it worked for me without having to flash cwm.
I think if you just change the txt file to fit your new rom then run it all again as you install, should be fine.

No, that is the temporary way to do it, and it will not touch your actual Clockworkmod Recovery. I would recommend the Fastboot Method.
I have attempted to explain it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17633085&postcount=93
So, first boot to Clockworkmod Recovery, Go to Mounts and Storage, then select:
- format /cache
- format /data
- format /system
This will remove all data from your phone (Except stuff on the SDCard). Then, reflash Clockworkmod Recovery from the procedure I linked above.
EDIT: Or you can follow what Scratch wrote above. Make your settings the default (ie 250 40 by changing the values on the text), then proceed. Now that I think of it, his method is way more efficient.
Works perfect. But one question. I had values 190 and 40. But titanium back up shows 262mb of which 94 is free for system and 183mb of which 113 alone is free for internal. Have I done anything wrong ?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
It seems to have reverted back to the Stock settings somehow... BTW, Ti Backup isn't the most reliable one to check the partitions. Use Terminal Emulator, and type su , followed by busybox df -h to get the exact values of all partitions.

[Q] Custom MTD Partitions: nothing done ?

As I often have problem of internal memory (not enough),
I tried to apply on my Wildfire the Custom MTD Partitions, as explained here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233340
(and which seems very interesting)
But even all steps seems to do something, it doesn't have any impact on the size of the memory...
I tried to apply this size of memory: 145 10 (mtdpartmap.txt)
In order, I did this:
backup, reboot to CMW Recovery, Nandroid Backup, copy the 3 files needed on the SDCard,
format /cache, then format /data, then format /system, then perform a Wipe Data / Factory Reset, then flashed recovery zip, then Reboot Recovery, then Restore the nandroid backup
=> Remark: at the end of the retore of backup, I had an error: "Error while formatting /sd-ext!" (don't know if it's normal)
Then I flashed the boot zip, and finally reboot the Wildfire.
But when I'm checking the memory, sizes are the sames: 183 interal (including 40 for cache).
What I did wrong ?
HTC Wildfire S-Off, CM7 n215
Recovery: 4.0.0.2
S2E used
Make sure your not naming the txt mtdpartmap.txt.txt only have 1 .txt at end.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Yes, as I saw that someone did it, I verified it.
I tested without any extension too (only mtdpartmap), but result was the same.
I will try again, by changing the values-number in the file...
Maybe an additional question: inthe topic is written:
"When you flash a new ROM, you WILL lose the new settings ("partially"). To overcome this, after flashing your new ROM, flash the boot-v1.5.8-Beta-CustomMTD_S attachment immediately after flashing the ROM before restarting your device."
Does it mean that I should do these operations each time I want to install the last build of cm7 ?
Yes, you have to flash the 'boot' attachment only everytime you flash a new nightly (or a new ROM, or even restore an old ROM, for that matter). If you don't, the device will not boot. (This is applicable even if you do not wipe before flashing a new nightly)
For your issue, although I can't really seem to figure out what the issue is, I would say try flashing a fresh install once just to check whether the procedure itself works or not.
If it still doesn't work after a fresh ROM install, try with the older version of the Custom MTD Script: (Although this shouldn't really be the problem)
http://db.tt/JjGxneZD
http://db.tt/C5noTQl9
this happened to me, but i realized rooted phone doesn't mean s-off, double check it has s-off?
I can solve this issue lol i think. Do this order instead
:backup, reboot to CMW Recovery, Nandroid Backup, copy the 3 files needed on the SDCard
Wipe Data / Factory Reset
Flash bravo-recovery-v1.5.8-CustomMTD.zip
format /cache, then format /data, then format /system
Reboot Recovery, then Restore the nandroid backup
BEFORE REBOOT:Flash bravo-boot-v1.5.8-CustomMTD.zip
Now should work. Well this is how i do it and works. I did the order you said the first few times
I hope this helps
Thx to all for your help.
Yes, my wildfire is S-OFF, I verified again.
About the version v1.5.8, I got it, and will install it quietly in the order you indicated below, I will inform you if it's ok by this ;-)
I just tested in this order, and I'm blocked at the end on the blank screen HTC.
But, little question: I used the files recovery-v1.5.8-Beta-CustomMTD_S.zip et boot-v1.5.8-Beta-CustomMTD_S.zip (so tagged as beta). Are they the sames files than the ones you used ?

I have flash the boot and recovery files. I have made a nandroid backup i restore it. The mtd file looks like : mtd 170 22 . The rom memory is 512 /system & /cache partitions have only 192 mb. Memory for my applications is only 274 mb. In "About Phone" says i have 118/310 (free/avail).Where it's manager of application i have 245 used and 29 free.I should have 55 mb free.. bot no. Rest of my memory to 512 where it is? Should i delete the nandroid backup? Danke!

Its 512MB and not 512MIB/MO. Hence, the actual usable capacity is actually 483MB instead of 512MB (If I am not mistaken). (The analogy is similar to any flash drive / hard disk you buy - the actual formatted capacity is lower than the rated capacity)

How to Flash/Use Multirom(Noob friendly)

Okay these are the steps I took and put as simple as possible. Some steps may be skipped depending on if you have done them or not. These are written based off my setup and what i did.
Disclaimer:Me nor Tassadar or bigsupersquid are responsible for any damage done to your phone so use at your own risk.
Multirom Install:
1.Format through cwm your sd card to have an ext(Recommended 512 mb)
2.Download the two zips from bigsupersquid posted here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20626123#post20626123
3.Place them both onto your sd card.
4.Boot into cwm and flash the cwm zip you downloaded from squid's thread.
5.Now reboot your phone and then boot again into cwm(It should have blue text if it flashed correctly and the multirom option)
6.Now I highly recommend you make a backup of your current rom just in case anything goes wrong.(I made a copy of it onto my pc as well.)
7.Now flash the other zip titled "Multirom..." and wait for it to install. Now reboot to see if it boots. If boots then everything has been done correctly.
Rom on SD Card setup/install:
For this I have install on phone the latest build of cm for oV and will be using the same rom to setup on sd card just for test.
1.Now here Make another backup of your current rom through recovery(Will be used trust me)
2.Now flash the rom you want to use on sd card.(If using a 2.3 rom then the sd card crom msu also be 2.3 and vice versa for 2.2 roms).Reboot phone(a must so dalvik is created correctly).(Make sure to do the appropriate steps fro flash rom like wiping etc.)
3.Reboot back into recovery.Go to multirom and select "Create from current rom". (flash the multirom zip again if it says folder not found)(ROM on the sdcard is placed in /sd-ext/multirom/rom/).
4.After it finished you can go ahead and restore the backup you made in step 1. and the reboot after finished and wait until boot manager shows up.
5.Select boot from sd card and it should boot into the rom you chose to install to sd.(If it doesn't then you did one of the steps wrong).
6.That's it you now have multirom booting enjoy it !
MultiROM recovery menu description:
Active/deactive state is for recovery only, you can boot ROMs from backup in boot manager - that means its N-times boot rather than dual-boot.
When not active(boot from internal memory):
Activate (move from backup) - when you already have backup, this will move it to active folder (fast).
Activate (copy from backup) - same as above, but it copies it instead of moving
Create from current ROM - pretty self-explanatory
When active(boot from sdcard):
Deactivate (move to backup) - Moves current ROM to backup folder, so next boot will be from internal memory
Backup - Creates backup of current ROM
Erase current ROM - Deletes current rom, next boot will be from internal memory
Copy modules from int mem - Copies modules from ROM in internal memory to SDcard. Try this if WiFi does not work in SDcard ROM.
Thanks to Tassadar, bigsupersquid, everyone behind cm7 for optimus v and anyone else that contributed to this
Sounds awsome, gotta try the noob friendly lol....dont have patience for the more detailed one ;P
Sent from my LG-VM670 running ICS2.3.7 oc 806~825

Well pros would be you can dual boot between roms.Cons would be not many different roms since most are based off cm7 lol
why would i want to switch on the go from roms? im not being a **** or anything just wondering why someone would want to do that.

Some just like the choice of having two different roms customized differently with different apps and such.

Plus you can partition a bigger space on your SD card giving you more room for apps
What is the likeliness this recovery will prevent you from flashing a different recovery.
There are a couple people trying to flash the rzrecovery and getting failed attempts.

If you flash the recovery image using flash_image while booted into android, I think it's safe to say just about zero.

Something was not working right because a couple people using the multi recovery couldnt get rzrecovery to install. Not sure if they got IHO installed or not. I have a feeling something is not allowing flash_image to work properly with that recovery.
I just wanted to see what the devs of this recovery thought.
Tetris from recovery is worth it by itself! havn't installed a second rom yet but this is cool anyways
