Hello guys,
Since a month or a bit less my Arc bootloops every 40-60 hours, mostly while charging. It started without that I changed anything on the device like a new mod or so
It plays the bootanimation again and again and just a batterypull can fix it.
What I did so far:
- Reflashed it without wiping data, didn't help
Mods I applied:
- DooMKernel V15
- Statusbar widgets Indi V2
- Removed Junk Apps
- SuperCharger V6
Setup:
- Overclocked to 1.4GHz
- Underclocked to 122MHz, set it back to 245MHz today to see if it helps
- Undervolted -100mV
- Worked perfect like that for 4 months
I ran out of ideas on how to fix it and hope you guys can help me, as the bug is really annoying, I wake up if that happens at night while charging, which happens most of the time

And I did never do that on my X10 for 7 months and it was never a problem, then I got the Arc...

Those are your problems right there. Try by removing overclock, then undervolt and if all else fails go back to stock kernel.
Ok, I'll try that.
But it was stable for 4 months, that's why I didn't touch that yet.
And I noticed when the CPU can't handle something, like 2GHz oc, the phone freezes for a min and restarts then in a normal reboot.
But I definitly try removing that after I know if the bug appears with the min cpu speed of 245MHz.

Try the 1.6 ghz kernel from doomlord. It is possible that your cpu us a little fried with the 2ghz boot. Might just be more preferred then removing overclock, also i noticed that 1.4 doesn't really give give than 1.3. and only switch to higher values when you REALLY need them

Thought the 1.6GHz kernel is for devices that don't boot wth the 2GHz version which works perfect on mine, it even runs @ 2GHz for a while.

That doesn't mean that it can handle it. Prolonged stress to the processor can cause damage, so the FIRST thing to check when you see odd behavior is this (kernel, overclock, underclock, undervolt).
I won't stress test it @ 2GHz, don't want to burn it ^^
If it isn't fixed with 245MHz min speed I'll flash the 1.6GHz kernel and check it.
Otherwise I'll flash the stock one back, if it still happens then I ask for a exchange Arc. (It has the crack in the case, too)

For the Arc (LT15) anything above 1 GHz is potentially damaging, just saying.
The spike during boot is not much of a big deal, but running it constantly at 1,4 for example, could cause issues.
So be careful. And I don't think anyone will give you a new Arc because you can't overclock enough the one you have!
It's totally stable @ 1.4GHz and runs at lower voltage than stock 1GHz, so there shouldn't be any damage.
If the CPU (is damaged or) can't handle sth the phone freezes for a min and restarts then, never had that @ 1.4GHz.
I don't want a new Arc for more oc, just in case I can't fix the bootloop issue. For oc mine is enough for me

If it were "totally stable", you wouldn't have started this thread though...
And what you describe is not the only indicator that the CPU can't handle your settings. Actually, bootloops are quite common for all sort of overclock and undervolt related issues.
Again, try running the phone at 1 GHz and see if the bootloops still occur.
If yes, try going back to stock kernel and observe again.
It's the only way to see if something is really the matter with the hardware.
Yes, well, totally stable was related to using it, works perfect then.
Just after the timegrame it restarts while charging and while charging it doesn't bump up the CPU speed like when doing heavy tasks like browsing. That's why I am so confused, the 50 hours are the time when it happens, if it would be uv or oc related it should happen before that 50 hours timeframe, shouldn't it?
Exam tomorrow, on Wednesday or the day after I should have time and then I flash the stock kernel again.
Atm it runs perfect for 30 hours now with 245-1401MHz, uv -100mV and did heavy usage today.
Why happens stuff like that when you're busy with school, damn

Update:
It's running for 62 hours now, with 245-1401MHz, seems like the 122MHz caused it, but not sure, it gotta survive some more days to be totally sure.
But why caused 122MHz bootloops after a long time where it was stable?
So happy, that I don't need a new device, if it keeps stable

Another - bad - update:
After ~75 hours of uptime I updated some apps, got a few FCs and then it bootlooped, I remove the oc now...
Maybe it needs more voltage after some time of use with oc?

Damn, I really can feel the loss of the 400MHz, fresh started phone lags, never had that with oc.

Ok, that's because of a background progress I guess. 20Mflops @ 1GHz and 29 @ 1.4GHz
EDIT 2:
Increased the voltages +25mV, hope that helps, last step before flashing stock kernel.
Most speeds are undervolted -75mV now, but some are @ -175mV like 800-1024MHz now, had -200mV from one of the CM7 kernels before.
Using it @ 122-1401MHz now.

For how long and how hot did your Defy get?
it ran for about an hour at 1350, and the max temprature was 39°C as i recall. based on abc's results, that jit in 2.2 is a big performance hit, looking forward to the official update

i dont think so... did the stability test for around 15 minutes and the temp stays at 38 C
60/1200 with threshold at 80%, everything is so smooth

Hmm, i know have it at 62/1200, with threshold at 60%. 80% makes it feel a little laggy.
Hopefully the processor will last the life of the phone at these settings!
Hello people
Today I bought my new defy and I'm testing the possibilities of the device.
After some misgivings, I've made a progressive overclock and hit the 3GHz mark.
Someone has already gone beyond that and know if the device remains stable? Here it is running at 3GHz for an hour and not warmed more than 1 º C and not spent too much power. And yes, he is set to keep the clock all the time.
Did someone made this as well?

The phone didn't overheat. Even after one hour at 3GHz, the temperature did not rise more than 1 º C.
I wonder if anyone else has ventured within the limits of overclocking.
Even at 3GHZ, there's nothing gain as no apps or games need that power to run at the moment. All apps and games would run smooth even at 1GHZ. Possibility at this 3GHZ is only a fried processor if the phone won't do the auto shut down.

3GHz is impossible, over 1.5GHz CPU can't work, you can set 10GHz, but will be exactly the same as 1.5GHz

Yes, on screen it's shows 3GHz. But, like bvbfan said, I think it's only on screen and not the true frequence of the clock.

Never had a problem and i think going any further will not be healthy for your phone especially when you increase the vsel over 58
however you make it happen, it is fake. simply because of no heat. it is not really 3GHz, just a number you see on screen. run Quarant and see if it is really 3GHz
The current kernel won't let you overclock anywhere above 1.3 ghz. Its ARMv7 CPU limit I believe.

Just download SetVsel from Play Store, then search in Google for Defy overclocking.

What's a safe level to overclock my phone to? I'm running the latest MIUI (1.9.16) with the lastest Tiamat kernel (1.1.3) I'm at about 1344 MHz right now. Can I go much highter?

From my testing, I've found there isn't to much to be gained going over 1.6ghz.
For a safe level I keep mine at 1.2 ghz. This has worked out well for me. Try different frequencies and see what works out for your needs.
I'm running JDKernel with the max set at 1.5 ghz, using the smartass governor. When I look at the "time in state" info, it usually shows about 75% of my time spent at 768 mhz. Seems to be working great.

Well, I tried bumping it up to 1.6, and I locked my phone and the screen turned off, but the keys stayed on, and it wouldn't come back up. So I pulled the battery and went back to 1.3 like it was before. Now its working great. I'm on smartass v2

If your having lockups, try installing Incredicontrol from the market and bump up the voltage on the higher frequencies 25-50mv, this should keep you from locking up. I do this when I use the performance governor and want to run Quadrant or Linpack .

I've been using SetCPU, cuz I couldn't understand Incredicontrol..... What's ideal if I'm running around 1.6 for voltage?
On the Jd Kernal, I'll bump it up to 1450 and go from there.

I'll go about the same on the Tiamat. I usually will start at 50 mv over whatever the stock setting is on the kernel when running performance runs.
I didn't know that Chad had done a Kernel for Aosp romed Dinc2's. I know his Dinc1 Kernels were great.

My first android phone I OCd from 600mhz to 1ghz and one day while playing a game I heard a loud pop noise, then my phone shut off and that was that... toast. So I have been extremely leary of overclocking now. I am aware there are users who have OCd their phone to 1.4+
My question is how safe is when I use No frills to OC is it ramping up the volts to get that extra power. Also according to the Snapdragon layout it lists the S2 in our phones as capable of 1-1.5ghz... does this mean I could technically go up to 1.5 and be OK? I have a large 3600mha mugen battery, so thats not an issue, but what I am afraid of is popping my phones brains out...

We're on the MSM8655 instead of the 8225. iirc, the difference is that it's cdma oriented as opposed to gsm
Each chip is different in what it can handle, so your best bet is to test it out, slowly. When your system starts to act funky, step down the voltage/speed levels.

Just thought I would open this to everyone on R800x, interested if people could point there OC status below.
Mine is still on 1.2ghz. with Performance and BFQ
Highest I can go is 1.6, but I keep it around stock or slightly underclocked, with SetCPU profiles that increase to 1.2 for games and internet apps. smartassv2 and sio for governor and scheduler.
I heard that underclocking can end up reducing battery life over time. Is there truth to this or is it just a myth?
1.6Ghz and Performance when the screen is on.
Stock when the screen is off.
Battery last all day, but I don't use heavily.

There's a large number of things that can adversely affect battery life, but by the time it becomes a problem, you'd most likely be on a new phone, anyway.

I tried my r800x at 1.6ghz (running Cyanogenmod 9 with stock kernal), and I was stuck in a boot loop that I had to fix through CWM Recovery. I am now running stable at 1.4ghz.
Yeah I'm on my 2nd xplay after I tried to oc to 1.6. My phone got extremely hot so I pulled the battery to let it cool. Upon booting my touch screen was non responsive. I don't ever go past 1.4 now.

Custom kernel such as LuPuS or DooMKerneL
1.6 min and max. SIO, with performance governor, then I switch it after 30% and lower to powersave sio, 804-416 Max or whatever those numbers are.

1.4 Ghz run stable down to 1.075 V for me.
With 1.050 V, is freezes after some seconds of the AnTuTu stability test.
I guess that stock voltage for 1.4 Ghz is 1.250 V, as it can be seen in arcos repo.

Depends on the scenario, but the energy-per-cpu-cycle-ratio might be better with 1.4 Ghz after all, plus full calculation-thrust
Also had it running at 1.8 Ghz, and at one point with 2 Ghz, but i do not remmeber the voltages exactly.
Might have been something around 1.275 V for thw 1.8 Ghz one, also a good result.
By the way, there are quite big differences:
My Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 runs at its full 2.1 Ghz with the lowest possible voltage, 0.9250V, normal is 1.150V
On the other side, i had a desktop E6600, which needed much additional voltage for little OC, and was also bad for UV.
(seems as it was an exception, as they were known for excellent oc capabilities).

Thanked for sharing your numbers with everyone =)! may i know how can i safely experiment with undervolting? like what do i do to make sure there will be no hard-breaking or equivalent events from happening? and also how do i know i should stop and choose the voltage 1 level higher than my current value (i.e. when is the value too extreme that it could be bad for my phone)? My suggestion is to use the numbers in the table I've posted. Use the phone for 2-3 days and see if it becomes wonky (random reboots, hangs, etc). Then try reducing the voltages to the "extreme undervolt" values in the graph I attached to that posting. Then lower the voltage for the 'sleep' frequencies first (369 and less), and slowly work your way to your maxfreq.

For me it´s a bit different. At the upper frequencies (1000-1400MHz) I´m at the extreme UV voltages. But for the lower frequencies I need to be +25mV above the extreme UV settings.
So there is noone who can tell what the sweet spots for all the frequencies are. Each CPU is different and everyone has to find out his sweet spots himself.
For stability tests there are even some apps at the play store, though I found the facebook app to be the best stability test app at all. Where all the stability tests passed the facebook app crashed if I undervolted a little bit to much.

Then lower the voltage for the 'sleep' frequencies first (369 and less), and slowly work your way to your maxfreq.

alright i'm trying with the extreme UV settings now (with +25mV for freq <1000mhz, will reduce later if stable) but i'm not sure if its the new Queen Anne's Revenge v2.3 rom, hurtsky's 2.1 kernel, or the usage of smartassH3 + sio that is causing my phone to feel less responsive (like takes 2-3x longer time to launch apps like whatsapp, boat browser, also launching incredicontrol twice in a row crashes incredicontrol lol). Is this a sign that I am undervolting too much? because I've tried raising all values by up to 50 from the extreme UV but doesn't really help. also tried changing smartassH3 to smartassv2 (my previous governor)

Undervolting doesn't affect performance, at least not directly.
What it affects are power consumption (i.e., battery life) and stability; some components within don't perform reliably with too low a voltage, and may internally reset themselves. This causes the kernel to go into panic (because the state in the kernel no longer matches the state of the hardware), and as a result, crashes.

ok. i used CWM to clear cache and dalvik cache, which forced the rom to "upgrade" again. The lag is significantly less noticable =)! Perhaps when upgrading rom (non-pristine), it is better to clear cahces
how sorry i'm a newbie here may i ask how to undervolt (or a link)? i've been having problem with battery life so perhaps this will prolong it further..
Download incredicontrol and u can use that app to set voltages. Follow graph given by pepo . Make sure u do not set as boot first. Test for like a day and if no phone hanging or restart then u can set as boot
