Hi
I have another problem with HTC Touch Pro 2 regarding turning the phone on than has been posted in the forums.
Sometimes(every second day) my touch pro 2 wont turn on using the on/off button.
I will have to do a reset(on reset button) to turn the phone back on.
Any idea what can cause this?
HTC Touch Pro 2 using original Danish ROM. Both current version and also a problem first version.
it is called the sleep of death (SOD) , and afaik it has been solved, but I don't know any more about it as I never had it my self !

Not solved. Author of thread that you pointed to denies it is a SOD fix.
There could be several reasons for the SOD.
Please check out my page about SOD's and comment if you are able to fix it!

last 2 days ive had a similar issue, wont wake with power button when it's slid open
it may be an obvious troubleshooting measure, but have you guys installed any new software recently? if so uninstall...even apps from the marketplace can cause various issues...
I have been having the same problem for several weeks. my phone has been repaired twice and I now have new phone and still getting the same problem. If I disable the data connection it seems to solve the problem but that kind of defeats the object of this type of phone. Disabling the facebook sync option seems to greatly reduce the occurance. I am on t-mobile uk and using stock roms with no additional software.
My experience has been that SOD is not actually SOD but rather just a temporary thing. Put it back in your pocket and try again in few minutes.
had this the first week of ownership, in my case went into the vodafone shop and reported the problem where they swapped the battery in my phone.problem solved.
Hi...I had this same problem with my Sprint TP2. It has now been fixed, but I had to install a custom ROM. I installed the NRG Rom and since then, I have not had the SOD. I believe that Google Maps was causing the phone to enter the sleep, however, I am not positive.
The NRG Max Manila Rom is excellent. I would just install it if I were you and everything will be fine.

Try installing LUMOS to avoid SOD
i have a couple of TP2 with the SOD problem.
I read several post recommending LUMOS, so i did a quick test and it seems that it's really solving the SOD and also giving a little more battery dimming the screen.
Give it a try and let us know your comments.
I know your post is old, but my SOD problem is new. What is LUMOS?

Way to thread necro indeed...
I assume he means this app.
I've seen what sounds like this problem on my TP2 and have found the way to revive the phone is to call it from another phone.
Really hoping someone can help me. I have had my Defy for a few months and have always been on a custom SBF but continue to experience problems with the Defy working amazingly for hours and then sometimes I turn the screen on and the Defy is working in some kind of super slow mode and opening anything takes ages, everything does eventually open so it’s not crashed but just going super slow!
I am currently on SBF 3.4.2-177 Nordic but have had the same problem on different SBF’s so either my phone has a hardware issue or its some software I have on my phone, I am currently on Beta 6 of CM7 and have had this issue on other betas of CM7 but have never heard of anyone else with this issue. The phone will sometimes go a whole day without the issue also which is weird. It is not overclocked either. When it goes into what I now call superslow mode I have checked to see what the processor and memory usage are and both are around 60% used not being topped out at all. I have even used StabiltyTest to test the memory and CPU when the problem is occurring and both run through fine.
I really would love to know if anyone else had a similar problem or if they know what is causing it or how I can find out what is causing it without removing every bit of software I use. The only piece of software I use regularly that runs in the background is Juicedefender so I am going to remove this now and see what happens over a few days.
Any help would be amazing
Many Thanks
Bob
Did you install the latest patch for the auto-brightness issue? or Did you turn off the auto-brightness?
Thanks for the fast reply I have already installed the latest patch for auto-brightness issue but still have the problem
Was the phone slow in the stock ROM? I mean that's really wired that the problem appears on each SBF
Hi mys_721x, I only had the stock ROM for a matter of days when I first had the phone so really cant remember but I am thinking I may have to go back to see if I do still have problems if no one else can suggest anything else. Cheers
I have this same problem. Only fix seems to be a reboot whenever it happens

Same here, my phone suddenly becomes sluggish and unusable. Yesterday it was stuck on 100% cpu usage, I entered the task manager to see what was wrong and there wasn't any application that was using the cpu.
Only solution is to reboot everyday.
Glad to see I am not the only one, yea a reboot does the job sometimes it can be twice a day sometimes I don't see it for a few days, do you guys have juice defender installed by any chance as thats the only real program which stays running in my background which is extra to the roms I have used, cheers for your input, lets hope we can figure out whats going on.

I had it to in the past. When i tried to lock the phone it took long time and it wouldn't unlock for a wile 1-2min what is verry long if your waiting and afterwards scrolling was lame.
Don't know what I did, but it's gone now. Now only when out of memory(dhuu!)
I think I wiped it cleen, went to a 2.2 and didn't have it again, now on CM.
Do you see in spare parts any apps using mutch cpu?
Weirdest thing that happens to me..
Every hour/day the phone loads up some applications prepared to start when I turn on the phone..
That means that if I close say, tigertext or Skype, the following day, without turning off the phone, hey are running again.. wtf?
EDIT: A way of checking what's using the CPU, if you're on Froyo, is check the application manager to check for services CPU usage
Yea I have no idea what is causing it but little to no cpu usage when it happens, when I lock on cm7 the tv effect for screen off is super slow motion its really strange, did a clean wipe yesterday and did its first slow down today just before post, cheers

Anyone have any luck with this? Mine just seems to be getting worse and worse on CM7.
Update: I've opened a issue for this on Github. You can go there to post new information / symptoms so that hopefully it can be fixed: https://github.com/Quarx2k/android_device_motorola_umts_jordan/issues/204
Hi dasbin,
Since uninstalling Juicedefender from my phone I have not had this issue once, it has now been 3 days which is probably a record for me so I would say that it was causing me the issue, do you have juicedefender installed? I am now using green power it is much better so far.
Cheers
Very strange thing happened to me today, went to wake my phone up from lock screen but I pressed the power button and nothing, no wake! I knew I had lots of battery left, but thought maybe it died for some reason, plugged in charger, no response still could not turn on, even holding the button down did no change, nor opening keyboard.
I then removed the battery and re-inserted, booted up and its working fine again
What happened?!
It just happens This happens to my Desire Z every month or so, no matter what rom I use. Recently I changed the radio the latest release, but it won't help I suppose... we'll see.
It seems nobody knows why this happens, many questions are scattered around the the forum about this hang and no answer
sorry for my english
gps make this problem (+ google maps + all google maps based programs)
just turn gps switch off
when you have to use gps, turn it on, use it, turn it off, reboot
and DZ should work fine

Not sure what causes this, but it happens occasionally to me too. Maybe once a month or so... Happened earlier today. Hadn't used Google Maps nor do I have any apps that use GPS to track my location.
Happens to me all the time, in average about once every 1-2 days. I put my phone on my desk with screen off, and an hour later it does not respond to the on/off button at all. Sometimes it will reboot when I press the button for over 15 seconds, but most of the time I have to pull the battery, which is a drag since I have a silicone phone protector. I have also noticed that every once in a while, the battery will be fully discharged when it does this. This morning my phone was at 80% battery power, I used it for a minute to check mail, then put it down. 15 Minutes later it was dead, and when I pulled the battery, all I got was a little screen saying 'Please connect charger immediately'. Kinda scary.
I've seen lots of posts about this too on androidforums.com and on MoDaCo. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Ace on Android 2.2.4 and she has the exact same problem. I haven't found a solution yet, but it seems to be software-related (since it's not limited to Desire-Z), and more specifically Android-related (as it also happened on stock phones without any third-party apps installed). I upgraded to Android 2.3.3 last week and that did not solve it.
Other suspicions I found on other fora:
Correlation between 'phone sleep' and 'WiFi going to sleep' (some people report they benefit from keeping WiFi always off unless they really need it, some people report success keeping WiFi always on; for others - like me - it does nothing or made it worse)
Correlation between phone and SD card (phone does not work properly if the SD card is not the original one, or has not been formatted on the phone)
Correlation between WiFi and SD card (people report reformatting the SD card on their device helped, after they've turned WiFi off)
I have heard people that have had their phone replaced 7 times and all 8 phones did it, some others got the problem solved with one replacement, so it seems not all devices do it.
Check out this thread: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-ace/312084-randomly-turning-off.html
A personal observation of mine - and maybe hardware gurus can comment on it - involves the micro-USB connector. Not only is it a pain to connect (compared to mini-USB), but I have noticed that it very easily 'jitters' if there is a slight bend in the cable or if you move the phone while it's connected. The plug will then sit slightly crooked in the connector and the phone will stop charging. And actually, I'm pretty sure that the first time it 'died' on me was when this happened. Would it be possible that this triggers the event? And that the micro-USB is the common cause?
I wonder what radio all these dying phones were running? I had 12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26 , now I'm running latest radio, but only a few months will tell if that helped or not...
Update: it's been about a week now since I've disabled GPS and I haven't had a single SOD since! Seems that at least in my case GPS was the culprit, like others on here already suggested. Can anyone else confirm?

when you have to use gps, turn it on, then after use turn it off and reboot the phone
and notice how many times you phone hangs in this too weeks
Hello,
i have the same issue with my Desire Z. Many people say its GPS related, i think so, too.
I never hat issues with GPS while navigate. But because the issue is probably caused bei GPS, i have a idea.
I use the wipe efs-data using for GPS from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028405
I never had freezes since this. Maybe it helps everyone. Please try and give feedback. Thanks.
Yesterday my Desire Z did exactly that. For the first time. First I thought the battery would be dead, but connection it to the charger didn't even make the orange LED turn on. So only taking out the battery and re-inserting it brought my phone back to life.
I had WiFi turned ON and GPS NOT turned OFF (though no Maps or anything running, so there was no satellite icon in the status bar the last time I had used it).
I will keep watching it, if GPS OFF or an EFS-WIPE might help. But right now it has crashed the first time in about two weeks, so it will be hard for me to tell any improvement before at least a month has passed. ;-)
Tronar
Addendum: after finishing this post, I went downstairs to pick up my phone. And it was dead again! Seems to be happening more often at the moment, than I thought. So I'm going to do an EFS-WIPE now.

google maps is running still in background (also when You try to kill it with taskkiller it will stand up) and use (or try to use) gps for example for location for weather forecast. it can happen that the gps icon cam in notifications bar only a few seconds so You can't see it
it is possible that another apk use (or try to use) gps to get Your location, geotagging photos or so.
just have always gps off (when you haven't to use it and reboot after using) it helps
Bad News, wiping efs-data did not resolve the SOD . Yesterday it happens again.
My gf has the Desire Z and loves the phone - cept for this random issue of her phone freezing on standby. After a bit of screwing around I found out it is definitely related to the GPS module. Whether it's a hardware or memory leak it doesn't matter to her. You can crash her phone anytime by simply using the GPS and any software (she likes google maps / navigation) when she's done whether she turns off the gps or not, makes no difference - within a few hours at the most - it'll crash every time.
The short version, after using your GPS you'll have to restart your phone and you'll never have it crash again.

Hi,
sometimes the touchscreen of my defy stops working (but the phone is not frozen)
and the only way to fix it is to lock/unlock the screen...
does anyone have the same problem (and can help me)?
thanks
P.S
i've had the problem both with stock rom (2.2) and with cyanogenmod rc 1.5
When this happens, do the 4 buttons below your display still give you haptic feedback (little vibration) or do they react not at all?
Also, does this only happen when there's the normal launcher/standby screen active or when there's an other app active too ?
Did you undervolt ?
Edit: Also, this seems to be a hardware problem which seems to be well known in a certain German android forum but I cannot find much about it in here. In short, the digitizer unit seems to be broken for some people and locking/unlocking helps because it disconnects and connects power for the digitizer. The people there fixed the problem by replacing the digitizer (which isn't easy at all!).
It would be nice to have someone from XDA who had this problem before too, to confirm this problem!
First of all, thank you for the answer
When I have the problem, 4 buttons stop working too.
It usually happens after a period of stand-by, i don't undervolt or have some other application running than the launcher (ADWlauncher).
I bought the phone one week ago, if it is an HW problem, i can't repair it by myself...
I'd recommend to wait and see whether xda has other suggestions for you and if not, just check the Motorola hotline and ask whether they know something and if they do change it for free.
Also, what you describe fits perfectly to what I've read elsewhere (don't know whether I'm allowed to post a link here or if it were useful at all because it is in German). So it sounds like your digitizer could really be defect.
ok, even if i hope to solve the problem by myself...
News: They've changed the touch screen, but the problem is still present...
Can it be a sw problem??
Keep sending it back, they will replace it in the end.

Yes, the whole phone. They have two year warranties, but don't put up or make do, you should have a phone that works right

Hello,
I have an HTC Desire HD running Android 2.3.3. The device isn't rooted and I've never rooted it before.
I've checked on this site, and I've scoured Google all day but I haven't managed to find anything that matches my problem specifically, as explained below.
In the last couple of days I have been having a bizarre problem where after several minutes of normal use the phone becomes completely unresponsive or very laggy (to the point where it is unusable). This occurs whether I am using apps or simply looking at the home-screen.
The only thing that's responsive is the screen lock button, this works as normal. However when I then try to unlock the screen, the phone is still unresponsive and I'm unable to unlock it.
The only fix I've found (if you can call it a fix) is to leave the phone alone for a several minutes. If I do this I can once again unlock the screen as normal and continue using the phone, however after a few minutes of use it locks up again! This has been happening since last night now and I've found no way to break this cycle.
I did a hard reset to see if this solved the problem but it had no effect. The phone will boot as normal, and after a few minutes of normal use it will become unresponsive again.
I've also booted my phone without the SD card in just in case anything on this was causing the problem, still no improvement.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue who could provide some insight as to what might be causing this issue? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
At first I thought this might have been a software issue, but as it persisted after the reset I'm beginning to think this might not be the case.
Thanks,
KaRsKiN
The problem is coming from the magnetometer. I have the same issue, please check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394264
The only workaround I found is to disable screen rotation and do a couple of restarts (not switch off). Of course, no compass in the end, but at least I can use the phone.

It is possible that your battery could be failing. See if att has one they will let you exchange.
If its not the battery then it could be a hardware issue. Just send it in for warranty if that is the case. You should still be covered as the phone is not yet a year old.

How should this be connected to the battery...?
Anyway, I think that it is a software issue rather than a hardware one. Maybe something is running in the background, using 100% of the cpu. You could try CPUNotify for realtime cpu monitoring.
If that doesn't work, you should try the magnetometer way. Maybe it's a new issue. Never heard about it though
I do what i want, because I can.

I'm not going to explain in detail about the relationship of voltages and CPU usage. The battery being bad can and has caused these exact issues. Just like if a power supply is failing it can cause a blue screen in windows. In android the phone rebooting itself or freezing is the equivalent to a blue screen. Since they have never rooted and are on a stock rom there is nothing except a hardware problem that would cause this. If the battery is not the culprit then one of the many components in the phone can cause freezes and reboots if it is failing. Android os does not allow a single task to take over the CPU. This is not a windows os. So like I said, just use your warranty and get it fixed. Stock phones should not be presenting this behavior, you would have to root it to cause these kind of problems.

Thanks for your help! My dad has the same device as me so I'll try swapping out the battery to see if this solves the problem. If not I'll try calling HTC to arrange a repair.
Any news? Was it the battery issue?
