HTC Touch Pro 2 won't turn on from sleep mode - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi
I have another problem with HTC Touch Pro 2 regarding turning the phone on than has been posted in the forums.
Sometimes(every second day) my touch pro 2 wont turn on using the on/off button.
I will have to do a reset(on reset button) to turn the phone back on.
Any idea what can cause this?
HTC Touch Pro 2 using original Danish ROM. Both current version and also a problem first version.

it is called the sleep of death (SOD) , and afaik it has been solved, but I don't know any more about it as I never had it my self !

Not solved. Author of thread that you pointed to denies it is a SOD fix.

There could be several reasons for the SOD.
Please check out my page about SOD's and comment if you are able to fix it!

last 2 days ive had a similar issue, wont wake with power button when it's slid open

it may be an obvious troubleshooting measure, but have you guys installed any new software recently? if so uninstall...even apps from the marketplace can cause various issues...

I have been having the same problem for several weeks. my phone has been repaired twice and I now have new phone and still getting the same problem. If I disable the data connection it seems to solve the problem but that kind of defeats the object of this type of phone. Disabling the facebook sync option seems to greatly reduce the occurance. I am on t-mobile uk and using stock roms with no additional software.

My experience has been that SOD is not actually SOD but rather just a temporary thing. Put it back in your pocket and try again in few minutes.

had this the first week of ownership, in my case went into the vodafone shop and reported the problem where they swapped the battery in my phone.problem solved.

Hi...I had this same problem with my Sprint TP2. It has now been fixed, but I had to install a custom ROM. I installed the NRG Rom and since then, I have not had the SOD. I believe that Google Maps was causing the phone to enter the sleep, however, I am not positive.
The NRG Max Manila Rom is excellent. I would just install it if I were you and everything will be fine.

Try installing LUMOS to avoid SOD
i have a couple of TP2 with the SOD problem.
I read several post recommending LUMOS, so i did a quick test and it seems that it's really solving the SOD and also giving a little more battery dimming the screen.
Give it a try and let us know your comments.

I know your post is old, but my SOD problem is new. What is LUMOS?

Way to thread necro indeed...
I assume he means this app.

I've seen what sounds like this problem on my TP2 and have found the way to revive the phone is to call it from another phone.

There is a peculiar problem in hermes(the best device ever made). Some times the phone led (green) blinks where as the display is off and it fails to start up even if u soft reset.
in the meanwhile if some one calls u he will get a ring but u wont be notified by ur device
this will make the person calling think u r avoiding him
this is the perfect solution tried on atlest 50 hermes
Plz install the following cab then switch off ur device then switch it on again and wolla the sleep to death problem is gone

Guess you forgot the cab?
Edit: Ok, here it is now ;-)
Anyone tried this???
To be honest: I find it a little hard to believe: threads all over the place about this SOD. All chiefs searching and searching for the solution.
And now in your first post you have the solution?
Hope it's its true...
Could you please give us some more information than "this is the perfect solution..."?
How does this patch work? any technical detail as to how this fixes the issue?
Great if it does but a little skeptical without any detail?
Cheers

To tell you the truth I have never been able to reproduce the SOD problem whatsoever. I still can't figure out what the heck is causing it.
Anyway, if you doubt nittin_sp, maybe you should tr it yourself and see if it solves the problem.

SOD
IN my whole 6 months having my hermes i had never had SOD until i flashed the official dopod rom with matt kitchen. when I traced the source that SOD had came from it was a bad extended rom flash i done. This cause the device to go sleep after the screen time out, and also if i put the phone in idle mode i had to soft reset everytime.
i flashed an original operator t-mobile rom with the extended rom and all my problems went away.
My device has never been quicker no more SOD and battery life is superb with the new radio 1.47 after one whole day with normal use with 3g internet I am still on 70% battery life.
Now I have the perfect device and i think hermes WM6 crave and addiction will be thinned out as there is not much you can do now with the hermes as to wait for PROTON or fully integrated touchflo working ROM.
p.s
TRY FLASHED A AN ORIGINAL OPERATOR ROM WITH THE EXTENDED ROM YOU CAN USE ROMKOCH TO EXTRACT THOSE TWO AND FLASHED YOUR ROM BEFORE FLASHING WM6 AND GUANRANTEE YOU WILL SEE AND FEEL A MUCH MORE RESPONSIVE HERMES. THATS MY 2 cents
Running new official wm6 no more sod here so cannot verify that it works, but I had alot of sod in various other roms and if this is a solution the senior members/cooks should disect it and figure out what is the real cause of them and what exactly this fixes since they are not so forthcoming.
edit, wait reading it again it says that even soft reset fails to start up, if that is true they are not talking about any sod I have ever had soft reset does what it does resets the device and boots up.
There were many quick fixes trying to figure out the sod problem, sd card issues, active sync turning on etc, maybe this is a cab that does that.
Psiodon
I will try this
I have had SOD's several times a week.
Will try this and get back to you in a couple of days
I find that I have to SRS every morning after not touching the device all night. I have installed this cab and will report back tomorrow about the behavior of the device. It would be wonderful if this actually works. I am keeping an open mind about it.
I don't understand why you're being so mysterious about this nittin_sp. From what I can tell using IDA Pro (sorry, but I am reluctant to simply load something on faith based on "100% fix" claims alone), your patch simply sets the DWORD value "DisableAutoSuspend" in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\sys to a 1. Interestingly, on my TyTN running WM6 this is already set to a 1.
Sometimes its easier to just say this rather then create a cab. That way the rest of the community can work off your findings and perhaps explore this SOD issue better.
If your cab does more than this then please share your knowledge so we can further explore this hermes issue.
ok so I installed this. I've not had any BSOD's since doing so in a 24 hour period, when normally I'm getting them alteast every hour, sometimes more than 1 in an hour. Will report more soon. Would be good if you can post what this does though as I'd like the ROM cooks to build it in.

Hi,
Sorry if this is a dumb question - why do you need to extract the ROM and EXTENDED ROM after flashing the original operator ROM and then flash WM6?
Would it be the same if I just flash the official WM6 and reflash with the cooked WM6?
Thanks!
As promised, I am reporting my results. While I have no idea what this patch is doing, for the first time since I have had this device, I have not had a single failure. Coincidence? We will see in 24 hour.

I have not noticed any increase in battery drain, but I did not use the phone much on the weekend. The reality is, the only time I have the problem is when I do not touch the phone and it goes to sleep. When it wakes up, there is an apparent memory issue that SRS easily resolves. But, since I have installed this cab, the issue has not reappeared - yet.
yup over 24 hours and no issue... Its looking good.

Me too. Mine just failed about 5 minutes ago. Too bad.

[Solved] TP2 won't wake after 2 weeks on same ROM; 'sleep of death'-style

So I've been using the same ROM (in my sig) on my T-Mobile TP2 for 2 weeks now. Last night I tried to wake my phone (it was on for 8 hours already; being used 4 hours prior to make a PowerPoint using JetCet Presenter 5), and the phone wouldn't wake up. I pressed the soft reset button on the side, and everything was fine. I pressed the power button again before I put it in my holster. Ten minutes later, I pressed the power button to wake it, and it wouldn't wake up again! I did the soft reset thing, and battery was down 5-10%, so I know the phone was on the whole time.
I did a hard reset, and still had same problems. I was going to return it with warranty, so I flashed the stock T-Mobile WM6.1 ROM and everything was fine (I couldn't replicate any of my problems). I went to a different ROM (the latest Valkyrie Leo 23815, I believe?), and I got the same "can't wake" problem.
Now my real problem is the fact that I can't replicate it on the stock ROM. I think it's not the custom ROM because I've used the same one for 2 weeks. I don't know how I can get a warranty swap in this situation... It's not like I can say "Look, I have your stock WM6.1 ROM and it works. How come it can't work with a custom ROM?!"
*I confess I did just download the JetCet Presenter5 cab from these forums just two days ago. I made a PPT (as stated in the first paragraph) for a class and I saved it on my SDHC card. It was working afterwards, but the "can't wake" problem only occurred 4 hours later, and still persists after the hard reset.
Can I please get any help here? I really need a working device with a custom ROM and I don't know how to do a warranty swap in this situation.
Thanks.
SOLUTION: post#19.
(I replied this also on TmoNews forum)
What do you have to do create this problem...just wait and it happens eventually? Or does it happen right away the first time it goes into standby, or you put it in standby? Or is there a specific sequece of events?
How long did you wait after flashing the stock WM6.1 to see if the problem came up?
Maybe you could try flashing the "hidden" official WM6.5 rom...just on the chance that it might fix/delete whatever is wrong. Or it might show the problem so you could return it...after the Jan-20 official release.
Good luck

(Replied this on TmoNews, but this might help others willing to help out)
On the custom ROMs, the first time it goes into standby, I can't wake the phone anymore and I just noticed that it won't recognize the USB cable (no charge from the outlet; no sync with the PC). If I soft reset and prevent it from going to standby, everything's normal (even the USB problem).
I flashed the stock WM6.1 ROM one hour before my first post. Everything is fine except for the annoying old Start Menu and the small, non-finger-friendly buttons!
I'll try the "hidden" official ROM now, just in case. I just don't know how I'll survive without WM6.5.x until after the official release date!
Thanks! I'll need the luck.
...So I think after all the testing I've done, and the weird problems others have posted [in various threads], I believe the problems I've experienced were a result of the new Sense2.5 build 1922 ROMs.
I just flashed the old EnergyROM Dec.4 Leo 28008 (Sense2.5 build 1921) and the problems are no longer present.
Newbie to WM!!!
Having similar Problems with my TP2. My phone has had several "wake up" probs since I have the phone. I installed directly after purchasing the WM 6.5 ROM directly from HTC-support (german). My real problems are right now that my alarm clock is not working properly (sometimes it works, sometimes not) and my phone often does not wake up after stand-by. Last night watched the clock at 04:30 and almost got problems caused by a non working alarm clock... (phone was connected to power supply)
anyone knows more about it? Is it a bug? user faults?
additional added software: Brians Task bar, Mort-player and powerbutton 12.
Just wanna get sure, that the phone is not damaged from hardware's site (warranty)...
Well.. I have (in this days) this problem.. It seems that it's getting worst day by day.
First of all: I've never used a "cooked" rom!
I had the original HTC rom (6.1).
I had this problem so I flashed the 6.5 update and it magically was solved!
Everithing was fine till 4-5 days ago: I can't understand what is the problem..
But I had only one time an "alarm problem".. But maybe was my fault..
I don't know what is the problem but it is NOT related to "cooked rom".
The worst thing is that RADIO MODULE IS ON!
So people call you, write you.. AND THEY KNOW YOUR PHONE IS ON!!!!!
This is totally unacceptable!!!
I would try a coked ROM.. But, as I can read, it would be useless..
And anyway: What is the most STABLE ROM in this jungle?
I'll write to italian HTC support.. I don't know if they will solve anything..
To: chrizz.o and DJ Palmis
chrizz.o: The alarm clock in WM is unreliable sometimes. You could download a 3rd party app alarm clock like Klaxon or G-Alarm.
DJ Palmis: You could also download an alarm app (see my response to chrizz.o). I don't know if you're talking about you can't turn your screen on after it goes into standby (my problem).
I don't know if you guys are confused but my problem is: I can't turn on the screen if the phone goes in standby (screen goes off). The phone is still on, but the screen is permanently off. This only happens to me in the new custom Leo ROMs. It doesn't happen in stock ROMs or old custom ROMs, so I cannot return it.
DJ Palmis, I don't know why it's happening in a stock ROM. You can try a hard-reset (wipe device) by pressing/holding Power button, Talk/Send key, and End key at the same time when the phone is off. That might help. If it doesn't, return it to HTC.
BTW, I think the most stable ROMs are the EnergyROMs, ValkyrieROMs, and the Rhodium_AF (ark666) ROMs.
Same issue w Att Tilt 2
I'm experiencing the same issue, occasionally the screen won't come on from standby when I know the phone is on. It shipped with 6.5 and it remains with the stock rom.
The issue is so hit-&-miss that it is difficult/impossible to trouble shoot.

I think we have the same problem, indeed. And i don't want to hard reset because i did not change anything in the last weeks.. I'm only using my phone more frequently.. So more text messages, videocall and so on..
But this does not justify this problem.
It would be nice to know what happens during this "freeze".
Maybe it is related to notification queue (that's why a new rom "solves" problem for a while)?
Well.. Anyway I had this problem on my old HTC Universal.. So it is related to WinMobile or Qualcom..
when i had a issue similar to that. i just hard reset my touch pro and flashed a whole new rom. and hard resetted again and i was bug and error free.

The OPs issue must be a little different.
He tried flashing several different roms -- stock and custom -- and only the stock T-MoUSA WM6.1 or WM6.5 roms or custom roms that were a month or two old would stay "fixed".

Cheers for upadating me. Appreciate it. Will try another alarm clock in a while. BUT: I use mort's player as an additional "alarm", as well, and even that does not work propperly. Might be, that it is no real alarm clock. strange and weird.
But it is good to know, that the "will-not-wake-up" problems are more or less known by several other users. I almost thought it is my stupidity to use a win mobile phone *lol*
Does anybody know, eventually, if there's a more stable rom (maybe with the new manila like on HD2) for germany which might solve the freezing problem?
thxx for updates
I'm also getting will not wake problems on the leaked official TmoUS WM 6.5 Rom. I would get it about twice a day. My stock tmobile US 6.1 never had this issue.
A fix that works for me:
Change the power settings to always on for a like 10 minutes and put the default settings back. You would have to do this after every soft reboot.
HTC Italy told me to set Band selection to auto (booth choices) and to change network selection (auto if set to manual or manual if auto) and then they told me to soft reset by button.
I'll write you if I have news.. But i think they know something more than us about this problem. And they are on the way of solving because i noticed that this problem happens in bad quality signal areas and ALWAYS when phone is ON.. So it is related to radio module.
I think it may be related to SIM card, too.
Because they told me to change SIM.. And at last to do an Hard Reset..
Maybe my 3 card is not fully compatible with my radio version?
Hey,
thxx for the updates. Indeed, I have quality differences in our flat, bandwidth switching between HSDPA, 3G and GPRS, depends on, in which room I am.
Asking HTC Germany about this problem, they told me, it is a not known issue. The more I follow up here, I cannot believe that.
Do you really think, it may also be caused by the SIM-card? Mine is about 2 years old (VF GER).

Mine too!
What I know is that i had this problem on my old HTC Universal... So maybe problem is not in the "age" of SIM card.. But in some technical compatibility between SIM and Qualcom.. (You know: 64 KB, 128KB and so on..).
Maybe Qualcom has some problem on european SIM card? I don't know..

I read somewhere in a ROM thread (I don't remember exactly where) that some people are experiencing constant freezing on their phones after a few weeks of use. Someone recommended taking out the SD card because it might be corrupt, and that interferes with the phone's performance. Some people said it worked; they found out their SD cards were actually corrupt, and using a new one made the phone function well.
Having used ValkyrieROMs before, I remember a pre-installed app (I forgot the name) that let you format your SD card. When I tried it (even after I formatted my SD card to FAT32 on my PC), the app said my SD card was corrupt and cannot be located. The last time I used the app was 1+ months ago. I think I'll try to flash a ROM without the SD card when I have time.
...But I still don't know how the SD card would give me a problem with a (new) ROM that I had on my phone for 2 weeks...and no problem on an older ROM (that I have now)...

I finally got my phone working with new ROMs again!
It was the SD card! I connected my TP2 to the PC as a "Disk Drive" and I went to My Computer > [right click] Removable Storage (SD card) > Properties > Tools > fix... something something (I can't remember exact words). It fixed the corrupt SDHC card I have; now my phone is working again!
This might help you, too, DJ Palmis...
Just had done this right before the last freezing-problem. My SD-card was not corrupt, so this did not solve my problem.
At least I swapped my SIM-card, made another hardreset and checked my SD-card again. Let's see what's happening...

Stock ROM or custom? Any overclocking?
The phone powers up if you soft reset, correct?
Well, I found out it was a small problem with the rom.
It was a custom rom, and I just installed a different one and it works flawlessly.
With the other one, the light sensor did not work either.
Also, I dropped my phone the other day, and a really small spring fell out.
And the back plain on my screen is loose and opens up easily..
Which ROM?
I hate to hijack this thread but i am having the exact same problem. Basically when i put my phone to sleep its hit or mess as to if it will wake. It seems to have started when i flashed Energy ROM. It was terrible after that, so I switched back to the stock ROM available from the HTC website and all seemed well at first. Now its back to hit or miss.
I cant really rule out a hardware issue such as a broken sensor or something because I'm not sure how the mechanics of it work. When i push the power button on top the phone wakes but not the screen I know this because the 4 lights on the bottom light up and the keyboard as well. I can hit the button repeatedly but it doesnt help. At other times it works flawlessly, but usually does not.
Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what it could be, or a way to rule out a hardware issue?
Exactly my problem!
It was perfectly fine for the first day or so before it started crapping out again..
Can someone please help us with this problem?
It's mind consuming and it's making me worry.
Until TP3 is out, I won't get a new phone ):
Well, the problem is discussed in great detail on the internet, but no one can give a definitive answer. ..
I've been a touch pro 2 user for exactly 3 days... My new HD2 from T-Mobile is in the mail... This is a un acceptable flaw with no real solutiion... Good Luck TP2 users....
Good luck to you.
I've had mine for over two years and it was flawless
Just one recent drop determined everything
Although I Must say, it was one hell of a durable phone
Yea, dont get me wrong. I really like the phone. Thats why I'm getting the HD2. Great OS and big beautiful screen. I'm gonna miss the slide out keyboard but I think thats what breaks these phones.
I'm excited that there's the possibility of running Windows Mobile 7 on it.

I'd like to try to help. But you never answered my question of what ROM you are on (and which one you tried previously).
I've determined my problem is 100% hardware related. If I open my keyboard and then grab the screen and tweak it while pressing the power button it comes onn 100% of the time. Sux, but at least I know the cause now

I'd agree with the notion that its likely hardware related. I've flashed maybe 10 different builds of Energy over the last 7 months or so, and never once had and issue with the SOD (sleep of death) that I can recall. A bad flash can sometimes happen. But since you flashed another reputable ROM (Jackos), that somewhat eliminates the possibility that a bad flash is the culprit.
You can start from scratch, by running Task29 to format the ROM area of the phone's memory, and reflash the ROM. But this would be just to eliminate the possibility of a bad ROM flash. My gut says that you won't see any different results.
Running the phone "clean" for a while (to see if you still have the SOD) without any software installed or any other modifications will eliminate the possibility that any software or mods are responsible for the issue.
are you sure its hardware related? because my phone started doing this yesterday too...I had an energy rom from october, and it was really buggy. I am only able to keep my phone from sleeping when it is plugged in to some power, so i flashed the newest energy rom and still having the same problem...wont wake up from sleep
EDIT:
I dont see how this can be hardware related because everytime i soft-reset, the screen works again. this problem only happens when the device goes to sleep...
Any overclocking?
As I already mentioned, I never had any SODs on Energy that I can recall, except when using OCT (OverClocking Tool).
I have done no overclocking...I just flashed the newest energy rom like 15min ago...is there anything else I can do or check? it looks like the phone works still, just no backlight...
After flashing the ROM, maybe try running it "clean" for a day or two, don't install any software or do any mods, reg edits, etc. If you still have problems with the phone waking up with a new ROM, and no other software or other mods, than it may indicate a hardware problem.
And be sure to run Task29 before you flash the new ROM, if you don't already do that.

You're not the only ones (by any means) with the SOD issue. But it isn't at all clear what causes the issue. Lots of different theories in that thread about various software or ROMs, with no clear solution.
Lots of conflicting info, but some comments on the thread suggest (as I mentioned) that Task29 may help (certainly can't hurt).

are you sure its hardware related?

Nope, definitely not sure, especially after reading the thread linked above. But as I suggested before, Task 29, try a different ROM, and run it clean with no software or mods, and start eliminating the variables.

[Q] Device becomes unresponsive after several minutes of use.

Hello,
I have an HTC Desire HD running Android 2.3.3. The device isn't rooted and I've never rooted it before.
I've checked on this site, and I've scoured Google all day but I haven't managed to find anything that matches my problem specifically, as explained below.
In the last couple of days I have been having a bizarre problem where after several minutes of normal use the phone becomes completely unresponsive or very laggy (to the point where it is unusable). This occurs whether I am using apps or simply looking at the home-screen.
The only thing that's responsive is the screen lock button, this works as normal. However when I then try to unlock the screen, the phone is still unresponsive and I'm unable to unlock it.
The only fix I've found (if you can call it a fix) is to leave the phone alone for a several minutes. If I do this I can once again unlock the screen as normal and continue using the phone, however after a few minutes of use it locks up again! This has been happening since last night now and I've found no way to break this cycle.
I did a hard reset to see if this solved the problem but it had no effect. The phone will boot as normal, and after a few minutes of normal use it will become unresponsive again.
I've also booted my phone without the SD card in just in case anything on this was causing the problem, still no improvement.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue who could provide some insight as to what might be causing this issue? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
At first I thought this might have been a software issue, but as it persisted after the reset I'm beginning to think this might not be the case.
Thanks,
KaRsKiN
The problem is coming from the magnetometer. I have the same issue, please check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394264
The only workaround I found is to disable screen rotation and do a couple of restarts (not switch off). Of course, no compass in the end, but at least I can use the phone.

It is possible that your battery could be failing. See if att has one they will let you exchange.
If its not the battery then it could be a hardware issue. Just send it in for warranty if that is the case. You should still be covered as the phone is not yet a year old.

How should this be connected to the battery...?
Anyway, I think that it is a software issue rather than a hardware one. Maybe something is running in the background, using 100% of the cpu. You could try CPUNotify for realtime cpu monitoring.
If that doesn't work, you should try the magnetometer way. Maybe it's a new issue. Never heard about it though
I do what i want, because I can.

I'm not going to explain in detail about the relationship of voltages and CPU usage. The battery being bad can and has caused these exact issues. Just like if a power supply is failing it can cause a blue screen in windows. In android the phone rebooting itself or freezing is the equivalent to a blue screen. Since they have never rooted and are on a stock rom there is nothing except a hardware problem that would cause this. If the battery is not the culprit then one of the many components in the phone can cause freezes and reboots if it is failing. Android os does not allow a single task to take over the CPU. This is not a windows os. So like I said, just use your warranty and get it fixed. Stock phones should not be presenting this behavior, you would have to root it to cause these kind of problems.

Thanks for your help! My dad has the same device as me so I'll try swapping out the battery to see if this solves the problem. If not I'll try calling HTC to arrange a repair.
Any news? Was it the battery issue?

[Q] Fixed?

Hello just wanted to quickly ask if somenoe out there has found a fix for the random reboots on jss15q?
I know that there are other post about that out there but its filled up with people saying that they have it to and nobody has posted a solution.
So this thred is for solutions if there are any

Flashing a custom kernel can fix the reboots (faux123 or elemental).
Mine required faux123, and also had to disable mp decision and use intelliplug.
However if you had reboot problem, then there is a chance that you have standby battery problem too.
Mine is hardware related where some component in kernel (gss subsystem) keeps crashing and restarting, so the tablet never goes to deep sleep mode. I described it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2429039
There is no fix for this problem, I've tried all the kernels out there and they all show the symptoms. I've sent mine back for RMA.
So if flashing a custom kernel fix your reboot and you can have good standby battery life, then great. Otherwise it's a hardware defect and you have to return/exchange it.
On a side note, I'm sure this is not a Nexus 7 specific issue.
Nexus 4 had similar reboot/standby battery problem, which leads me to thinking that this is problem in Qualcomm's chip.
