Why don't you want to keep it at never?
I had that same prob on my hero. Might be an android thing?
At any rate, you want it on never.

Id like it to switch off if I happen to be not using my phone for a bit. After a few hours of leaving it sitting, and its still connected to that wifi connection, it kinda hurts the battery.

Actually your 3g radio uses more battery than wifi unless your wifi signal is weak and your 3g signal is strong.

Do you feel it really increases battery time?
I am currently trying out Juice Defender free on the standard preset for my unmodded Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately I am not thinking that I am going to continue with it.
So far it has crashed my phone to reboot (first time that has happened) and when not using my 4g it turns it off but it takes forever for it to come back on once I want to use the phone and it gets pretty frustrating having a useless phone for about 5-8 minutes everytime I pick it up.
I hope you have better luck than I am having.

Strange. It's never done any of that on mine. I'm on HSPDA+ though.
As for whether if makes a difference I'd definitely have to say a big yes. But it all depends on how you use your phone.
Ultimate working nicely here. Syncs every 15 min like it should. Screen is eating 60-70% so it makes only a small difference.

I bought ultimate, and found it to be a bit of a hog. I then turned off all the extra stuff and went back to the basic setting - the same as the free version, and noticed very little difference.
I think it might help you if you're one of those people who accidentally leaves radios on, or don't have high signal most places you go. For me a UV kernel made the only real difference.
It works well but not saving as much battery as it did on Gingerbread. Default Android idle-time battery management seems to have got much better.

This. I see a nice increase in battery life while I'm not using it, but if I have it on a lot (which I usually do) the battery gets drained pretty quickly.
I keep my phone on CDMA mode most of the time, unless I need to download something or want to watch a movie, then I switch to CDMA/LTE. I'm still not sure how much it helps though, as I've only had the phone for a little over a week.
For me, JD Ultimate works wonders. Especially when I'm at work and not playing with the phone too often and having only 2 signal bars, JD enables radio every 30 mins to allow apps to sync. It also manages my brightness automatically, which results in screen usually taking less than 50% of battery.
In general it helps me a lot, like it did on SGS2. My night schedule uses airplane mode and I only loose 2-3% over night.
I would have to remember about too many things if not using JD, so for me well worth it.

It does, i never used beta and JD controls my brightness. Remember there is a bug related to manual apk install where you cant tap install. I still use JD for brightness, just disable it in quick menu when manually installing apps then reenabling right away.

When JD is managining brightness, if the phone is asleep, when waking it up with the power button the screen comes full brightness and then settles to a lower level, which is quite annoying. Do you see this happening too?

That is totally weird, cause mine seems to wake up high and only then lower the brightness. I wonder if it's ROM related, although I'm on stock kernel 4.0.3.

Beacuse, believe it or not, it provides functions that some people find useful. Same goes for LightFlow, if you like the white-only color led notification of pure android, then you don't need this app either. If you prefer more colors/choices, then you do.

I purchased JD Ultimate yesterday so I can't really comment on how well it is improving my battery life. I will say that I am having issues going back to LTE when the screen is unlocked (Using the network mode setting). The phone keeps going to WCDMA instead of LTE. However, I noticed that since I have been using JD Beta 3.8.8, version 3.8.9 has come out and has addressed a few of my issues. The configure apps now works without crashing JD. I still don't know if the LTE is functioning incorrectly as I haven't had time away from my computer (I have no Wi-Fi at my hotel and must tether).
Is anyone else experiencing issues with the phone going to WCDMA mode after the phone wakes up? Also, what version of JD are you using?
So I was streaming music from MOG and all was working well until my screen went off (idle). Music started to pause/buffer and kept doing so every 10 seconds. When I turn the screen back on and stare at it, it won't do it at all and I can see it load full on the seek bar. Only happens when screen goes off and phone goes idle. I'm guessing its something with the CPU throttling maybe? Is there any way I can fix this? I'm connected on WiFi 5G and I have "keep WiFi on during sleep - Always".
This seems to be a pretty common issue (I have it myself, when connecting via WiFi with adb I need to keep my display on) and I've seen two issues on file here and here. I've yet to see a fix for it yet though

I'm running CM9 nightly with leankernel now. Although it's happened since I've gotten the phone, and I've ran probably half a dozen different ROMs and 3 different kernels, including stock. I vaguely remember reading some posts where people either said there was a fix or they were working on it, though I'm honestly not real sure.

I am also facing the same issue. Yesterday, I was downloading ARHD 3.0 directly on phone through wi-fi. Surprisingly the progress was 1% completion per minute in screen-off mode. But the moment, I would turn on the screen, the rate became 3-4 times faster. i.e. 3-4% completion per minute.
Deviating from topic, I have seen similar behaviour quite some time back in iPad1.

Yeah, I'm on Liquid 1.25 (4.0.4 based ROM) and it still does it. If I run a speed test and turn the screen off, let it finish and check it; it will never go much over 5 Mbit/s. When I run the test with the screen on, I will get 10-20 Mbit/s. This was of course testing on my home WiFi network.
This is pretty annoying because I download anime torrents every week and it's enough of a battery killer already just to download the thing, but now I have to leave the screen on in order for it to even finish in a reasonable amount of time. I've also tried setting the minimum clock speed to 1200 MHz in SetCPU just to see if it was a CPU throttling/bottleneck issue when the screen turns off. But it made no difference . This can't be a hard fix for Google/Devs.
At least with popcorn and franco kernels you can do
echo 1 > /sys/module/bcmdhd/parameters/wifi_pm
to put wifi on high performance mode with screen off. They say this can enable high throughput.

As far as I know, wifi goes into a low power state with screen off to conserve power/battery life.

Threre is no need for any custom kernel module. Im on Stock ICS 4.04 and found an easy workaround. Actually this issue is not an android bug, but an issue of streaming apps that aren't proberly coded for honeycomb and ICS.
I am looking to buy the Nitro HD for WiFi only use and maybe occasional prepaid use. I will flash to some deodexed ROM or maybe CM9 so I am not so concerned about software issues in the stock ROM.
What I am more concerned about is - how are the cameras for Skype/Google Video etc?
Any way to turn off all radios except WiFi by default everytime the phone starts up?
Thanks.
^^bump^^
I'll chime in here, I use mine as a wifi only device. As far as Skype/google video goes, video calls are great. I don't have a Sim card in mine and the mobile settings are greyed out which I'm assuming the cellular is off.
I'm currently running the latest cm9 nightlies and the device keeps getting better and better.
Battery life is definitely better than gingerbread. Battery life is within reason for a device this powerful while on wifi. The only battery drain I've found is being out of range of a wifi area. It seems the device goes on over drive looking for wifi and within an hour, majority of your battery is dead. This might be a CM9 issue, I'm not sure on that. Just remember to turn off your wifi when out and about.
Thanks for the response. I got myself a used one for $200 today off Craigslist. Will put leaked ICS ROM on it
Looks much sweeter than my iPhone 4S!!
UP!UP!
The super screen is eye candy. Using wifi it will last for 5-7 hours, while using 3g only for 2-3 hours.
For these two reasons, i often use it only as WIFI.
Will somebody introduce a super airplane mode without shutdown of WIFI?

Hi there,
I'm currently trying to maximize my battery life and I ran into something weird.
I've currently have tasker on disabling and enabling data (screen on/off), greenifying, kt747 with under volt and under clock etc.
Under normal usage I can probably get 2-2.5 hours of screen time and a total of 6 hours of usage time at work. I was told this time wasn't great and I couldnt see how I can fix this problem.
Then at home I had my wifi enabled and left my phone sitting idle and noticed it drained a lot slower. I ended up with over 1.5 days of usage and 2-3 hours of on screen time.
The odd thing is...my screen was off most of the time, meaning data was both off. Wifi was on at home, also to note the signal strength was significantly weaker at home and its LTE. Thats why I'm so piuzzled why at home I can get much better battery life
To recap:
At work: (6 hours)
HSPA (not LTE)
Great signal (full bars or over 22 on the real signal app)
screen off during idle data is off
no wifi on
At home (36 hours)
LTE/HSPA (swapping back and forth trying to get a good signal)
Terrible signal 1-2 bars (0-5 on the real signal app)
Screen off and data off
wifi is left on the entire time
My question is what is causing this difference? What am I missing here. How can I get the longer battery life without being on wifi

Ever looked in BBS (betterbatterystats) to see what was using your battery?
Also, battery life depends on a lot of factors: kernel settings, widgets, refreshes, app running in background, etc.
Running on Wifi is much easier for our device than running on data, which can explain a bit of the difference but not 5x the battery life. UC/UV can be good like it can be bad, if it takes too much time to load something = more screen time = more battery drain.
Btw, you didn't mentioned what ROM/kernel you are running?

As for BBS.........deep sleep for the processor accounts for majority of the processor state.
Though the "awake" bar on the battery status shows it gets woken up quite a bit.
Both at home and at work here are the BBS data I gathered.

Your signal strength doesn't matter so much on newer devices (especially on Wifi). Being singal-less will drain your battery but as long as you have signal, it shouldn't affect it (too much).

Ok this last part makes it seem like it's something with your area/carrier. You mentioned that you get LTE at home but only H+ at work, which means that either your work building is in a bad reception area (or simply hard on the signal), or your carriers' towers need update.
Are you able to do some testing outside your building? In the same general area (couple kms near it).
Have you tried to disable LTE while you are at work? You might be getting battery drain while looking for LTE. I could be wrong about this but it would seem logical.

Ive been reading in a lot of threads that LTE supposedly drains more than H+ and other non 4G signals. Either case, it doesnt apply to me.
I also wasnt aware that signal-less was what caused the battery drain. I do know my LTE at home fluctuates from really bad signal and the odd signal-less.
As for Wifi, I wasn't comparing the signal strength of wifi. I was simply compairing that during the off screen state
At home uses wifi
At work uses nothing.
One would think the nothing drains less than wifi?

During screen on time, the draining speed is understandable to see H+ draining faster than wifi.
However during off screen time, you are right, something is draining during at work.......which is a bit of a mystery

So during screen off when data is off.......do you think this is the culprit?

Kernel wakelocks are the usual;
Partial wakelocks, I dunno what event log services is coming from but if it's low, it shouldn't matter. (if high though, look into it)
Alarms, you have a lot of managers in there. Sure you need all those? lol (Are they coming from 3rd party apps?)
The time and alarms # of the above would be quite useful to know if they're bad or not.

ALarm maanger was higher than event log services.......
As for Alarms......I really dont know where they are coming from. I would like to rid them if poissible
Sure thing! Im not too familiar with reading logcats and BBS dumps. I've attached them here. Maybe you can decipher them.
I may do the same over in Chamonix's thread.

Yea at home its LTE but the signal is so bad i would lose all signal sometimes and sometimes get H+
At work its a constant powerful and strong H+ full bars.

Have you tried to disable LTE while you are at work? You might be getting battery drain while looking for LTE. I could be wrong about this but it would seem logical.

i can give this a try and test it out.
I assumed that since Im getting full H+ that they wont look for LTE......

Yea... I think i tried to cut down on all syncs and auto refreshes. Kernel, i've applied the most battery saving one I can find in the team kernelizer's thread. Along with changing my second CPU governor to conservative. I've tested a ton of combination, so far this is the best one I have.....

Your cpu_0 governor being.. Ktoonservative? And what about your scheduler? I personally get great results with row (noop screen off).

It isn't actually ''nothing''. It still has to communicate with the towers, if it only sends H+, it might be because it's having trouble (or that area doesn't have LTE just yet). That being said, your device might be perma looking for LTE and can't get it = causing battery drain.
During screen on time, the draining speed is understandable to see H+ draining faster than wifi.
However during off screen time, you are right, something is draining during at work.......which is a bit of a mystery

Answer *might* be just above.
I tried CM10, AOKP, PA
sort of reverted back to stock. I just like bug and glitch free over the small customizations.
If I can apply my hours that I had from wifi to regular use....i'd be happy........

Might wanna look into a custom TW ROM that is stable then. Intergalactic, Rootbox and couple others are quite popular around here.
of the 3
- Use wireless network
-Use GPS satellites
-location and google search

It definitely doesn't help. location access is a big battery drainer for sure. Might wanna look into manually turning it on when you need it.

At work atm, can't take a look at them. Perhaps someone else can help you in the meantime for those.

Like I mentioned above, powerful H+ doesn't mean it's good on your battery if it perma looking for LTE (this is a guess btw). Like it was mentioned, turning your LTE off while at work would help a lot if it's the case.

CPU0 Ktoonservative with scheduler NOOP (on and off screen)
CPU1 Conservative instead of ondemand to further conserve power
UV like 100mv across the board.
UC to 1350

This could be a possibilty......and with Wifi on, it stops it from looking.
I can disable LTE, however that would mean disabling 2G as well......I looked into the disabling methods and I would like to keep my automatic setting but just without LTE........
I can test WCDMA only for a day or two to see if theres any improvements.

Isn't that sort of weird that with data OFF, that it still searches for LTE? Doesnt that defeat the purpose of having the data being off?

I heard slim bean or sometihng laong the lines of that was good..... I may switch once I can iron the battery settings out.

I'll add this to the list of trying things. LTE and this.
THough i always had this off and from what i remember my bat life was around the same as before.

Custom ROMs definitely have better battery life than stock, whether it's on TW or AOSP.

Assuming you are on an AT&T device running stock TW, you can disable LTE only. However it is only good until you reboot or switch in and out of airplane mode (it reverts to looking for LTE). Create a new APN with name and APN name only filled out and save. Select it. Wait 20 seconds and go into dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* and select "Device information". It should say "WCDMA preferred" under preferred network type. You need to change it to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). Exit and go back to your APN and select the one for LTE. After a couple seconds you will have data back and it can switch automatically between 2G and 3G.

So yesterday i left it idle with 8 hours and it drained .6%/hour, i lost 5% in 8 hours
I woke up turned off wifi and in 3 hours I lost 2% which is about .7%/hour.
I'll give it a try at work.....
the only change i made was wifi off.
The location is still on
I have a new radio firmware i want to try as well, but that will have to wait.
Attached are my BBS logs, seems like theres lots of wakeups
EDIT: i have battery spy, during idle it drains at .5%/hour, but when i wake it up then make it go to sleep, it hovers at 8% then 3 % for a while. Why is that? How can I make it drop to .5% immediately?
