[Q]task killer - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Do I need really need a task killer?
I am using samsung S2 with beast mod, i just want to have more battery life.
base on the following explanation.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6426198
kill the apps doesn't really help for the battery life.
is it true.

No. Google search about task killers.

That link is correct. Infact task killers in some instances can actually have a negative effect on battery life. People who use them or are always concerned with how much free ram they have do not understand how linux, and android memory management works. Its nothing like windows.

thank you.
I am going to uninstall the task killer then.
by the way, what about the juice defender.
I saw some posting saying don't use juice def if i am on a custom ROM, since it will conflict each other, something like that

What he said.
Just download watchdog lite
Please look up some articles written by people smarter than me on why android as an OS handles multitasking far better than anything you're used to by googling something like "android task killer waste bad" if you want a well researched explanation that is over your head.
Basically, you don't need it. And if you're using it to only kill some rogue app once in a blue moon (which is the only legitimate reason to use it), you may as well use the built in force close function of Froyo instead of a separate app.
I just get horrible battery life. I'm running:
ROM: VirusROM Airbourne RC3.4
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-netarchy-toast mod-4.1.9.1-cfs with aggressive undervolting
And underclocked as far as you can go.
Getting horrible battery life even on standby just wondering if having a ATK would help out at all I know Android your not supposed to really one but at this point I'm willing to try. I mean I'm a moderate phone user but I figured the battery should last at least a few hours. I can't leave home without a charger.

I'm pretty new here but have been doing alot of research here. I would go into settings, battery and see if your phone has been searching for a signal. Mine is at 0% and i get great battery life but iknow this has been a big drain on the battery if your phone is spending a lot of time searching for a signal .

Try JuiceDefender
You don't need it with an evo, but I did find that 2.1 didn't do a glorious job of freeing up memory with my RAM-less Samsung Moment. In that case, I needed to kill stuff that didn't always come back or as frequently. With the EVO, I've seen no reason so far to have it.
I run ATK, SystemPanel, and occasionally EStrong Task Manager.
Not to kill but because I like to see whats running.
People jump to conclusions the second you mention Task Killer. (*Points up*)
I honestly get better battery life with task killers because an app that's consuming cpu won't get killed by android because i have 260mb free memory, I can kill it manually.
Anyways, Could try tweaking the built in task manager with this:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-dustypixels-minfreemanager-wiAA.aspx MinFreeManager.

Droid.incredible gets really hot! !

Hey guys let me tell you about this probably normal but weird thing that happens to my inc, it gets really hot from the back. I have been using the web (couple pages), mms app, 1 phone call, and the xda app. Have also installed advanced task killer froyo and stopped all applications from running on backround. I am using skyraiders 3.5 rom. I have it plugged in to the wall charger. And after I unplug It just dies quckly, its temperature is 109.8°F/43.2°C. Im using stock battery. Can the battery be causing this? Am I going to have to replce for another battery? Does anybody else have this problem? Any feedback is appreciated.

I've had mine to 115°F. There's tons of debates about task killers. That in fact could very well be causing your problems. If you have it set to kill background apps that are meant to run they will start up as soon as the task is killed. This cycle will drain a battery pretty damn quick and cause it to get hot. My opinion, take it off. Its not needed. Just cause its "running" in the background doesnt mean its actively doing anything. look at the battery use and then click on an app thats "running" it will tell you how long it has been actively using power.
Task killers are bad.
Your temp is fine, but watch out if it starts getting around 115+. The LED will flash if you hit 119, that's getting into the danger zone.

Also get app Android System Info (by ElectricSheep). You can go to the task tab, then sort by cpu to see what app is running most. (Android System info, I.e. the app you're using, will be quit high. But that's temporary). Like others said, it's probably the task killer.

yeah i thought so! well the rthing is that i had another inc before the one i had and it wouldnt even get near this hot but im looking on ebay right now to buy another battery, and just test it out to see if the battery makes any difference!
another question, do you think the OEM evo battery will last longer on my inc? i mean since the evo runs more apps and the os is more complex? would it fit my inc?

The evo is just a bigger screen version of the DInc with WiMax.
I meant to say since the evo has a bigger screen, and its 4g , so i think it uses more battery power than the incredible right? So the evo stock battery should holdbmore power than the incredible stock battery

Yes, the evo's battery is a little bigger but I really doubt the battery is your problem. If I were you I'd just do a clean install and see how things go. Don't download a task killer either.

The only task killer I can recommend is watchdog. It doesn't act like other task killers. It doesn't kill anything by default. and warns you if a background task is using over a configurable percentage of cpu time. you can then kill it if you desire. Pretty useful for those rogue apps that some times freeze up, and take the processing power with it.

+1 for Watchdog, wouldn't call it a task killer tho as its more a cpu monitor but it can kill tasks also (because of its high usage)
+2 for watchdog. Use the paid version and love it!

Juice defender?

So does juice defender actually do anything special to make you battery life better? Or is it just an app for the "lazy" if you will.
Does it do special things or does it just shut off radios and whatnot when your not using them?
I'm pretty good about shutting off radios and dimming brightness when needed and get 15 hours easy on stock battery so I don't necessary need it but its always kinda made me wonder...

Just my opinion, but with the advances in Kernels and other features, either built into ROMs (AOSP and Sense) or applied separately, and their progression over time I have felt that separate battery saving programs are a thing of the past.
Extended batteries have assisted in this need to feed our EVOs also.

I totally agree and have noticed much the same.
My battery life is far better using CM7 and the SavagedZen kernel that it ever was with Juice Defender back in the day.
So awesome of you guys to reply to the op and give your opinion on today's kernels and not answer the question at hand in any way shape or form lol ;p

Ok.. direct and to the point.. I usually try to not bad mouth software openly, but since called out, every battery optimizer I have ever used, even juice defender sucked and did nothing.
Same thing for memory optimizers, cache cleaners and other "snake oil" software/code/scripts.... on any platform, computer or phone. That better

A program that automatically turns off EVDO, wifi, etc most certainly saves a significant amount of battery life... if you think turning your phones EVDO radio off is "snake oil" then you're pretty damn incorrect. Leaving my phone on EVDO all the time it'll get a few days of battery life idle, vs several weeks of battery life with a strict tuned JuiceDefender setup.

Yeah, I used juice defender and it honestly saved a little battery nothing substantial but getting emails and things late because its killing my data when screen is off not worth it, so no it doesn't truly save battery. Its just more of a tool to control when your data is on and off..

Does the rooted stock have a better battery life than regular stock.

Hi..... I just wanted to know if the rooted stock Rom has better battery life than the regular unrooted stock because the regular stock kills the battery really fast.

Rooting by itself doesn't do anything so...
No
i thought stock battery life was good. Maybe it is something running in the background that is killing your batter.
Being rooted you can remove a lot of bloatware to save battery life.

All superuser (root) is is a program designed to grant applications admin access to the device, rooting itself inpacts performance/stability in NO way whatsoever..
if you want better battery life, i recommend flashing a custom rom

which gives you access to remove bloatware... did you miss that part? If you strip down your phone and freeze/uninstall apps that ran in the background and/or used data when you don't want it to, then you will improve your battery life.
I think you fail to see what the OP was asking. it was about battery life, not performance or stability.
if you check the running applications and freeze the ones that run all day then ya better battery but obviously just rooting isnt gonna do it

Im with doug on this one, i think youre taking this too far. The op inquired if a STOCK rooted rom had beyyer battery life as opposed to a unrooted STOCK rom. As doug said, a rooted completely stock rom offers no battery life imprpvements on its own. Now performance to me is defined as the optimal battery life and efficiency of the device.

Darksides and Juggernaut are the pretty much stock with bloatware removed and some additional goodies which are super helpful such as the notification bar toggles. I'm currently using darksides and I'm seeing very good battery life on moderate use (2 hours display time at 50% brightness, 1 hour on Spotify streaming music and I'm down to 30% battery. Total uptime since last charge 13 hours 51 minutes.) Perhaps not the best battery life out there but it does the job for me. Also if you're gonna install either ROM, undervolt the cpu as well as underclocking it. It really doesn't affect the performance, its hardly noticeable actually.

Ah i see what you guys are getting at. Just misinterpretation of both parties. Yes rooting itself does nothing, but obviously something is killing the op's battery. I was trying to inform the benefits of having root and how it may improve his battery life by removing whatever is killing his phone.. However if it's from an app he uses then no help there.

If you want better battery life you can always try change the kernel first. You don't need to do pesky full wipes so you retain pretty much all your settings and stuff.
To start off, I think Faux's is pretty awesome.
You're not going to gain leaps and bounds in battery life until you find what is eating all that power on your phone. It is typically an app you installed, as I don't find the t-mobile pre-installed ones to be that horrible, except for lookout security. I think that'll be a big potential battery hog. OR it can simply be your screen brightness. The trick I find is to set it on the lowest setting and just be SOL when you're outside I mean heck, I really want that battery life!
You can always practice better battery saving techniques, like not leaving the wifi or wireless data on when not in use.

i dont know why battery saving programs like to kill your radio if your signal or battery is low......that's the whole point of having a cell phone!!
None of these "battery saving" apps work. And all the things they do can be done manually. If something has to run in the system to "save" battery... it uses battery attempting to save battery.

Well i notice that when i dont use JD i lose a good few hours on my battery.
JD does help when i ran W/O it on i went from 100% to 92% in 10 mins all i did was mess with some settings in the menu of the phone not JD.

I thought that's what the Task manager on the phone is for? I remember when I first got my phone at sprint they told me not to download any battery savers or task killers because they "bump heads" with the stock task manager. If I'm wrong please let me let me know.

No things have changed reason is they think that if you use the TW Task Manager it will kill thee battery app but if you know how to use either both for example Juice Defender has the option to stay in status bar so it won't be killed if you kill apps on the Task Manager, but why would you kill the app in the 1st place if you knew it saves battery.

Any results you say you get with these so called battery saving apps. Was because you were too lazy to do it manually. Had you done it manually you would have gotten much better "results."

I agree, and I am lazy, but I don't get better results doing it manually because I usually forget. My phone is a tool, I have enough important things to remember about rather then whether my wi-fi is on or not.
And if that fails, I always have my extra battery, or desk charger, or car charger etc. . .

One of the best things I have done to DRAMATICALLY increase my battery was to change the kernel, ROM and undervolt. I found the best combination for me was to use Shadowkernel v1.04, Legendary ROM and then manually change the voltage settings by about 10% or more.
I used to drain about 10% an hour on standby with wifi but now I'm down to about 1-3%. I drain about 6-10% an hour when I'm using the phone. The only problem I have is when I have a very bad signal, then my battery life goes down over 10% but I think I would have the same problem regardless of whether I modified my phone or not. I don't use any battery saver programs at all now.
