Hey All
Just got my VZW Galaxy Nexus and am loving it. When I first connected the phone to the computer, I used my old HTC Incredible microUSB cable to connect. I realized this was silly, as I hadn't installed the drivers yet. So I pulled the cable and installed the drivers. Upon reconnecting, I couldn't get anything to register. No charging, no data... I tried uninstalling the drivers, restarting both the computer and the phone and still nothing. The phone would no longer register that it was even being plugged in. I grabbed the cable it came with and it worked fine. That is the only cable that will actually charge the phone. I can plug it into any USB charger, and as long as i use that cable, the phone will charge. Additionally, it is the only cable that I can use to connect the phone to the computer. I tried other old cables, but none work. All chargers and computers work with that nexus cable, but none of the other cables work. Any thoughts on this? Is this an amperage issue through the cable? Why would data connection no longer work and why did it work the first time?
Thanks for your thoughts!

I've had a similar experience, tried the charger from my droid OG, and it didn't work. Plugged in the old droid, still charges, new cable charges fine though. Weird, huh?
yea i tried to charge it with my usb cable in my car that i've used for all my htc phones but it didn't charge

Having the exact same issues and getting worried...This morning I plugged in and it said charging. Now, even using samsung plug it doesn't say "Charging". The cord appears to be charging but the OS doesn't say so.
At home I use the AC charger that came with my Nokia N97 mini: no probs. At work I charge with a cheap brandless USB cable plugged into my laptop: no probs.
Ok, I guess I'm going hunting for a working cable. My friends Orig. Droid cable works so I might trade out with him...might not mean anything, but the cables that work have slits cut in the forward facing part of the microUSB, and the ones that will not charge do not. This may be an issue of my available sample, but perhaps there is something else going on here? Just jabbing in the dark here...
I'm now using my Nokia CA-101D MicroUSB cable (with an extender, because the single cable is long only 10 cm) with my PC and it works perfectly.
The original Samsung cable that come in the box is always into che AC USB adapter, to recharge de GNEX on night.
Interesting. I had an old Motorola Charger (one piece unit, not separate charger and USB cable) that would't charge my Galaxy Nexus. However, I have used a Kindle 3G charger and Blackberry charger that have both charged it without a problem. I figured that for chargers that separate the cable and AC adapater it would be the problem with the adapter and not the actual cable but I could be wrong.
I did read on another forum that newer devices with bigger screens like the Nexus can't take a charge from older chargers because of the makeup and power use of the newer devices.
I was thinking some companies switch the pin-outs of their cables/ports so you can't buy a normal cable and have it work....I could be totally off base though.
Mine works on 4 different cables on two different boxes. Haven't even opened the one that came with it yet.
Working here on a GSM/HSPA GN on ANY Micro USB Cable.
You guys not working are you with a Verizon Galaxy Nexus?
Oddly enough, I've used my old Incredible cable (perhaps it was my Thunderbolt one, though) with no problems. I'm on the Verizon Nexus if that makes a difference.

Using OG Droid usb for data transfer and an old LG usb to charge overnite. No problems. I haven't even unpacked the nexus one yet.
there are no special cables.. they all have the same pin out, the only reason why some work and others dont in cars, is based on the actual charger itself.
if you have a cig charger with a usb female port, you have to rig it to work, the middle 2 pins are shorted out with foil/tape and it'll work
if you have a full cigarette with cable unit, nothing you can do about those, they either work or not (mid 2 are shorted on build/factory)
i use any old 1A-1.5A usb cig charger, then short the 2 middle pins using ANY cable (i am using bb cable) and it works fine.. even did it with several cables and chargers for friends so we didnt have to spend no stinkin $10-15 bucks for a charger
all this bs is really a way to control the market of accessories, making you buy new ones that are shorted out sine the old ones arent and wont charge
I went on eBay and bought a spare set of 5V 1A home and car plugs, those seem to work great.

Samsung phones don't play nice with other chargers. Using non Sammy chargers is ill advised. I run a warranty center for one of the big 4 cell phone companies ... trust me. Only use Samsung chargers.

if you turn off the tab and then plug it in, does the battery screen come on and does the device charge?

My guess - faulty resistors in the charger or one of the wires in the cable is dead.
The Tab expects to see USB D+ and D- shorted together and floating at 1.2 volts, set by a resistor divider in the charger.
Does the cable work fine for USB data transfer?
I think the user has possibly used the wrong wording. If he's seeing the MTP mode come on that means that he's just got it plugged into a USB port on a machine whilst the tablet is on (whilst using the "charger" cable).
Simple answer if that's the case. The tab doesn't charge that way as there isn't enough power coming through the port to keep the tab on and charge. If you however switch off the tab, you should find it charges from the USB port
If not, let us know.
Actually the tab is going into MTP mode while plugged into the outlet, using the supplied Samsung power adapter and supplied 30 pin cable.
I think i need to call Samsung for replacement... although after really thinking about what I just typed I think might be simpler to just buy a new cable online.
Or is it the actual power adapter that's faulty....
Well that is quite odd then. Does the tab charge if you switch it off and then plug it into the outlet / pc?

No, his wording was explicit enough to indicate that the tab is falsely detecting the factory charger as a USB host. This will happen with iPad/iPod/iPhone chargers, and would happen with the factory charger if the cable were faulty (D+ or D- open) or if the charger were faulty.
Again, to the OP: Does the cable work for syncing to a PC to transfer data? If it doesn't work at all, that's a sign that D+ or D- of the cable is open.
Meh, some people use words such as charger and cable interchangeably in terms of their truer intended meanings at times.
I was simply trying to cover that base.
Not sure if the cable works for data ....as I do everything over the air. The cable was giving me troubles at the tab end, (loose connection) but lately has been working OK.
I also haven't been charging and using at the same time lately either. I really needto contact Samsung and talk to them about a warranty replacement, but I have a feeling I'd be better off just buying a new one off Amazon or the like....

I have the same issue. Check that with different cables. So cable and charger is not the reason
If you're running a ROM with Pershoot's kernel, you can "Enable Charge From ANY USB" (see link in my signature). If you're running something else, you can make yourself a "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" that will trick the Tab into charging off anything (again, see the link in my signature).
But before you go out spending money (even if it's just a little bit of $$$) you should see if the cable works for data transfer between your computer and the tab.
If the cable works, then the "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" will keep you going until Samsung sends you a replacement charger.
I had this problem and didn't know what was wrong for a while. It turned out the the charger wasn't plugged in all the way in the outlet. I guess it wasn't getting all the juice it needed.
Am suddenly getting this problem tonight also it sometimes turns my tablet off but won't let me turn it on till I pull the charger out.I've also noticed that if I plug it in when the tab is off the battery sometimes comes up saying it's charging
just plugged the usb lead in to 2 laptops and they both show a usb error
I started having the same problem 2 days ago. All of a sudden i plugged in the wall charger and it went into MTP mode. It will charge if turned off but I've noticed it takes a much longer time to charge. From 3% it took almost 24 hrs to completly charge. Thinking that I'll have to buy a new wall charger.
Please help
Another one about charging...
My 10.1 P7510 takes tooooo long to charge, even beeing off. If I connect it to my notebook data transfer is correct but battery keeps draining, or at least not charging. If I turn it off (either connected to PC or charger) the charging icon appears correctly. I must say that cable (and charger) are not the original ones
Is it a problem of the Tab, or cable, and/or charger ?
I think the charger did not have enough current to charge the tab while still using it. The stock charger should be rated at 5V 2A. I tried another charger with only 1A and it still worked. Anything lower than 1A will end up showing that MTP mode.

I've got the same problem myself except I had to clean the charger clean of marinade sauce (it's a long story, don't ask!) and I took the device back to my local Vodafone store (I got it on a Mobile Broadband contract) as I thought it was faulty. They claimed the device was working fine although they used their own cable and not mine. They also claimed that if it was the cable, I should be easily able to buy one.
I tried buying one in every store I could think of, including the phone repair shops and they didn't sell them at all!
It's just a shame that a tablet like this which could have been a great tablet is crippled not only with no MicroSD slot, but also using a crappy proprietary socket whereas all the other Tabs have a MicroSD slot/uses a Micro USB port.
(I've already ordered a replacement cable from Amazon UK in any case for a reasonable price)
mtp-connected and media scanner running
I bought. My Tab 8.9 last November, only started having this problem since last night. There is red cross and mtp-connected,also,"media scanner running". I am using original cable and adapter that come with the Tab. Has anyone here found a solution?

and NEITHER one worked with my Gnex!! It wouldn't sync, charge or anything.
Is there ANY way to get a STOCK USB for the Gnex? (the one that came with the phone, http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I515MSAVZW-accessories last item on the 2nd page)
Also had problems with other micro USB chargers.....a lot seem to have some sork of short in theme.....lose power when I move the phone around....how hard is it to find a working cable? Anyone with similar issues?
I have various cheap eBay micro usb cables and OEM ones and they all work. Perhaps take a look at your gnex micro USB port? Maybe a piece of dust is in there. Or the contacts are screwed. Its probably more complicated than that, but it doesn't hurt to check. GL
I'm using USB cables I got for very cheap and they all worked so far...can you try the cables with another phone?
Hmm well I can try when I get home. My Droid 2 was the same way! only the stock USB would work and a few aftermarket micro USBs wouldnt work! And you guessed it, my Droid 2 USB worked fine with my GNex :S
I bought 2 of these cables and they work just fine:

They look like the one that comes with that charger, though. Very odd.
I have always had the best luck with the oem motorola micro usb cables. Well made and never a charging or pc connectivity issue and you can usually find them cheap on Amazon.
I have one cable that plugged into PC or into my AC jack gives me just AC, no data connection.
My other usb cable charges but no AC and gives data.
I bought this charger + cable combo.
They are the same models that come with the phone. They work flawlessly.
The kit was a little cheaper back then, but definitely beats having to order random cables till one of them works.

Most of my micro USB cables work, but this one that came with an LG Optimus One (and worked on my Nexus One, HTC Panache, Nook Color) does not register in my GNex. Not sure why - maybe something about the shape of the port or the depth.

I'm almost sure that you manage to damage your USB port, just like I did. It won't do anything but charge AC only through pc and nothing more, no matter what cable I use.

That'd be tragic. I dont think thats the case because GNex #1, GNex #2 and Droid 2 all had the same issue (certain cords short out, stock ones do not) So I am leaning towards manufactures quality....Just ordered 2 different cheap ones from ebay....waiting....
Definitively a damaged port. I bought a port from Hong-Kong as well, and it took 6 weeks to ship!!
After replacing it the phone charges with all my cables though.

I was wondering if anyone has bought a longer USB cable, the one that came with the AT&T Ion is too short and the phone has to be on the floor while charging.
A cable might seem like something so basic that any cable with the right connectors should work, but apparently not. The Kindle has the same type of port and the Ion and yet the Kindle cable doesn't charge the ion (when used with the Ion power adapter, of course). So if you've found a long USB cable that works, please post it here.

I don't think any cable will work. Just to be sure, I tried the Kindle cable with the Ion adapter again, and it also didn't work. The problem with some micro-usb cable like the one I bought from Wal-Mart is that they do not have an extra line that allows for data connections to computers and that extra power is what keeps the phone charging stable.

Also, anybody know if the ION will support an OTG cable?
from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Its been touched on, but just in case. The Ion uses a micro USB connection, that is the socket on the phone itself. There are lots of connections that look like micro USB, but aren't...obviously those won't work, as they don't fit. So when buying a longer cable, make sure its Micro USB (not Mini USB, by they way...that too is different)
Also, as mentioned, some older cables..especially those that came with some older cell phones, would be power only...no data transfer ability (AT&T loved including these with older Samsung phones, as they wanted you to buy a $30 data cable before leaving the store). They'll charge the phone from a wall or a computer, but with hit or miss results..some will confuse the phone, as it doesn't know what type of connection it has, others will charge very slow, etc. there is no reason anymore to buy a power only cable, especially considering all these cables are cheap. I lucked out, my logitech mouse came with a 6 foot micro USB data cable for adjusting its button configuration and charging...so i just use that with the wall mount, works great.
I ordered a bunch of USB extension cables from eBay, my cable is like 14 feet long now lol they are cheap

The reason I ask is because I have multiple USB charging cords laying around the house, and I actually wanted to take 1 to work. And since at work I need a long cable, I brought to my job.
The problem is that the cable I brought to my job is not an official Samsung cord, and it would plug into the bottom port, but it wouldn't charge. So then I went to another cord and apparently that one won't even plug into the bottom. The ironic part is that all of these cords would plug into my old Samsung Epic 4g Touch and worked fine with it. But now I've come to presume that not all chords are the same.
My question is has anybody else encountered the same problem? Or do I have a faulty bottom port? Yes I know I'm probably sounding paranoid, but it would be nice to know if this is an isolated incident. Thanks everyone.

I've plugged it in to many different cables, all work just fine.
I have an HTC one that gave me problems (difficult to physically plug in; once it was in charging was fine with the Note 2 adapter). So yes, I have noticed that. I assumed it relates to the changes (?) Samsung made in the port to allow for other connectors like docking and MHL, etc. (at least I think I read something about that). That same HTC cord has worked with every other phone I've ever used, including the Note 1. But most of my cords have no issues with the Note 2, so I'm chalking it up to tight manufacturing tolerances as companies try to cram more stuff into a small port.
I have been using an htc one with my pc. Im surprised it even charges my phone at all since most car chargers wont and we all know that charging by pc is really slow. I mostly use it for transfering files though. Maybe you do have a faulty one? Another thing you ahve to realize is the orig charger is a 2 amp and most other ones are 1 amp.
I just got the Galaxy S 4 the other day. It didn't come with a USB cable so I used an old HTC micro-USB cable. Even though the cable worked with my HTC phone, it doesn't exactly work with my Galaxy S 4. I have to move the cable in a certain way to get it to charge or connect, otherwise it doesn't work.
I was able to charge my phone using a micro-USB charger for a bluetooth device (trickle charge, took 12 hours to charge), but obviously this isn't ideal. So is there something wrong with my phone, or just my cable? And what type of micro-USB cable should I get that might work?

It isn't your usb cable. You need a charge that output 2A at 5V to charge the S4 at decent speed. Computer's USB or typical 5V USB chargers will not do.
Just FYI when I use an older usb cable other than the samsung one, my charging time increases. So using the right USB cable matters. I use an app called Galaxy Charging Current Lite to determine my charging amp with other cables and other wall and car chargers. Very useful app. When using the samsung usb cable with the wall adapter I get 1900 and I can see the battery percentage go up faster. Using an older usb cable with the samsung wall adapter I get about 460 and battery percent goes up slowly. Try the app out and see what you get.
First thing I'd be doing is complain to T-mobile or Samsung. Both GS4s I've received (one on launch, one from insurance) came with the USB cable and charger ready to go.
Next, you need 2A @ 5V, but ya need the right power brick to supply that.
and most likely using older/newer/non-Sammy cables and charge time increasing is because the cables use a smaller gauge wire (like 28 or 30 AWG IIRC) rather than say, 24 or 20 AWG (keep in mind that the smaller the number the bigger the conductor, and larger numbers have smaller conductors). Even with the right power brick, the USB cord still matters; I remember on my Nexus 7 that unless you used its cable charging was either sluggish or non-existant. (FYI the Nexus 7 cable should work with the GS4, I use it for file transfers o my computer and when I did all my rooting.)
also I personally use the battery monitor widget on my Nexus 7 to monitor voltage/current input/output. I may consider putting it on my GS4.
