[Q] EK02 modem and getting update messages - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have the new sprint galaxy s2 epic 4g touch that EK02 update and has been rooted Starburst with cwm. My problem is still getting the annoying update messages. any idea on what to do to get rid of these updates ? Previous threads I believe said only if you had EK30.
Roncad

If you installed an EK02 based ROM (or if they ROM disabled the update program), then you shouldn't see the update message. However, the EK02 modem itself wouldn't be considered "updated" by the program that checks for updates, so what you are seeing is probably working as expected.

I'm also getting the system update notification, but I'm rooted and running rogue kernel, eg30 ACS AIO mod. Will the update mess up my root, recovery, etc?

No but if your rooted the update will start and then quit with the triangle, just hold power button and it will send you to recovery. I used tibu to freeze system updater and it seems to have solved the update problem.

If the update actually installed, then it would disable root (until you re-enabled it), but since you have a modifed ROM, the update will fail integrity checks and not install.

[Q] Alternative way to unroot EI22???

Remember before we flashed the kernel fix that had a script that would remove root everytime we rebooted? Why couldn't we get a copy of that old kernel and just remove root and CWM recovery and then update (Rather than having to Odin back to EC05, then update to EI22 then update to EL30)? Is this a dumb question?

No, it is not a dumb question. But since we never got an Odin tar of EI22, not as easy. I am sure one of the DEVs have the pulled kernel, but since you would be using Odin extensively anyway to change kernels, then again to reroot I don't think it would save you much time. I would wait for a custom ROM with all the fixings and flash the new modem in the meantime. I have the flashable here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457981
What is the advantage of just flashing the EL30 modem?
Let's say I go back to EC05 and update.zip to EI22 and plan to update.zip to EL30. Do I need to flash the GB Kernel.tar in Odin for the keyboard fix and the GPS Fix.zip after the EL30 update?
I'm assuming I would put CWM3.1.1 recovery (is there a newer one?) and su.zip on for rooting after the EL30 has been updated.
Have I said anything wrong? Do we still need the kernel and GPS fixes for EL30?
People on custom ROMs would prefer to just flash the modem to try it out. Most if not more fixes are already in our custom ROMs so there is no need to get the stock fixes and tolerate stock.

Keyboard fix is in stock already. You would need the gps fix. And yes there is an official CWM 5.0.2.7. ROM Manager even supports the Epic with it now. The rest sounds right.

Kenny, thanks for the prompt replies. One last question though, the keyboard fix was the kernel that also removed the script that prevented your custom recovery from sticking. I assume we would now have to manually delete that script?

This is basically a maintenance update so yes you would have to do everything you did in EI22. Since we don't have an EL30 kernel yet you would need to do that.

EL30 system update on custom ROM

My Epic is prompting me to do a system update to EL30 while on a custom ROM. This has never happened before and I'm sure I shouldn't let it update.
What do YOU think?
sent from my secret underground bunker
mine did this am too..running cleangb, trying to Odin back to EC05 and then going to root, flash EI22 and see if it lets me update after I try OTA rootkeeper (if compatible with the epic, never installed it before).
Otherwise, trying to remember the root/recovery install method if it doesn't work so I can odin back to stock and hang with the custom roms until the EL30 gets nand-modded Let you know how it goes in a bit..
Try just updating the modem. That should stop it. If not freeze system updates with Titanium or Bloat freezer.

Nope. Still receiving the notice. And system updates is still frozen. Weird.

What happens if you accept the update and either pick install later or let it fail?

I am on CleanGB MTD with the CrispyClean theme. Yesterday I Odined to EC05 did the 2 flashables to get the modem to EL30 and then reflashed and restored CleanGB. Got the update this morning. The notification was annoying the hell out of me so I just let it try and update. It rebooted into recovery and failed. I pulled the battery, and rebooted and all is good now, no update notification. That was only about 5 minutes ago, so I will let you know if it comes back.
Thanks Coycaine.

Just a quick update. About an hour and a half later, no more update notifications or anything that seems to be screwy. I did reboot just to make sure, and everything is running fine.

Yep I did this last night when the prompt got to annoying and persistant to ignore anymore... about 12 hours later and no prompt... so just press install now, let it fail, pull battery and reboot and no more annoying prompt...

Turn off OTA altogether?
Is there a way to turn off this automatic OTA crap? So in the future I don't get nagged about some update that I don't want (or cannot) install?
I'm on a rooted CleanGB and I'm getting nagged by my phone that it wants to install the OTA update. I'm not sure what it will do -- just fail to install and not harm anything?
I didn't even think I would get OTA notifications if I was on a custom ROM.

Just let it try to install and pull the battery when it fails.
I've never had an update try to install before either.

I have the wifes phone set up the same as mine except for the modem (I forgot to put it on hers) and she got the prompt to update about 2 hours ago. Copy this apk into dir /system/app with root explorer
make sure u set the permissions to the same as the other files in that dir.

EL29 Update "Bug Fix"

I'm on the newest blukuban rom and El29 modem S710.10 S.EL29 and the newest EL29 kernel Whitman from steady. Even with all this I still keep getting an update notice saying I have to download the EL29 BugFix Update. What is the bug fix update? And why does it keep asking me about it.

Bump?

Is this the voicemail bug fix update?
Dunno man. My only guess is your phone thinks you haven't updated to the latest firmware version. You might try booting into CWM and wipe your caches.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
It could very well be the voicemail update. I actually just checked the Sprint voicemail app after reading this and there is an update for it. try updating it and see if it goes away.
Edit
Just to post it. I had my vm app updated (unless I actually forgot for some odd reason on a re install) The version for the vm I just got is T.5.2.0.26
Yeah i dont think its the voicemail update. it says EL29 bugfix. I dont think it has anything to do with voicemail.

EL29 Bug Fix is the OTA Firmware update. You would not be seeing it if you were actually on EL29 just flashing the modem and kernel or custom kernel is a little lacking in that regard.
Being that your on a custom and possibly more do not do the OTA update, can end up with a nice brick. I never looked into it but you can find a thread on how to stop the update messages if you dont want to change anything.
Putting any EL29 rom should be good enough to stop it as well as be on EL29 but you dont have to do the OTA style since it means going back to EK02. Sfhub has a One Click ODIN for it with a nodata version if you prefer or a full, that can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 That particular method still requires you to either flash a kernel with custom recovery if u want it or use sfhubs method for such if you like otherwise stock.

Tried to update OTA using CWM, but un-rooted. Fail.

I got my notification to update to L710VPLG2 and chose the install now option. It failed because I had CWM installed. Doh! I forgot to remove CWM.
So, I uninstalled CWM, unrooted and went back to the stock recovery. Now the Device Status is: normal.
However, I can't get the device to find the update when checking Update Samsung Software.
When I reverted to the stock recovery using this method, it went back to PALF9 with a date of Wednesday May 23. Before I installed CWM and used EpicTeam's recovery last week, the phone was updated had a date of June 28.
Any ideas? Does anyone have a download of L710VPLG2 available?
Many thanks!

Unfortunatley the install fails both from stock recovery and CWM.
I get a long winded message that says: Verifying current system... assert failed. Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip.
I am choosing the ZIP file you provided both in stock recovery and CWM.
CWM probably doesnt read the update script the same as stock. It looks like the stock recovery is looking for the update in a different location "/tmp" I would just go back to complete stock, get the update, then restore data.
I flashed the .zip from CWM successfully....

To confirm, you had CWM and root still enabled?
Went into CWM and chose the ZIP file, installed and you were good to go?
For me, when I removed CWM, it also downgraded my kernel.
I think I'm going to revert to stock removing CWM and root in hopes I get the OTA.

OK, back to stock recovery and no root.
I'm curious though, why would http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/sprint-sgs3-stock-restore.html downgrade my kernal?

I was hoping there was some sort of manual or push check besides the one under Settings, Update.
So, when I reverted to stock using Team Epic's instructions my kernel went back a month in date. Screenshot 1 is from when I installed CWM and rooted. Screenshot 2 is when I removed CWM and root using Team Epic's instructions.
Obviously, I've rebooted quite a few times without any further notifications after the initial one failed.

I was getting annoyed with the popup reminder too. I flashed the stock recovery via Odin and accepted the updated. Flashed CWM and re-rooted
I am willing to bet a DEV out there will work on a rooted stock rom with the latest...at least there will be an updated custom rom in the next few days..bet freeza, phantom, clark44 or kmullins will have a custom ready in a day or two. They are nicer anyhow, I mean, isn't that why we are all here?

Android system update 4.0.4

I've got the notification for me to update to 4.0.4 popping up every time I use my phone. I was wondering how I could possibly stop the prompts from occurring, or if there'd be an easy way to revert my phone to fully stock...without me having a backup. I've got a custom ROM installed (Blazer v4.0), so I'm guessing the answer is a no, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
My current system info for reference:
Android version 2.3.6
Baseband version S710.10 S.EL29
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL29-CL852097
In the event that I'm not able to restore it to stock, any info on how I can update my android through a custom ROM or something would be awesome, and of course ROM suggestions would be wonderful.
Thank you all so much for your time.

It's funny that you posted this question because I was just about to do the same too. I just flashed my phone to Blazer's 4.1 GB rom and just got the system update popup 10 minutes ago. Same setup only my modem is FI03. I had downloaded this zip file "Disable.OTA.Updates.zip" but wasn't sure if it could be used on a GB rom (downloaded it for Blazer's ICS rom, coincidentally).
I was thinking of nandroiding and then trying it out, but figure checking XDA first to be certain would a better decision.

If you want to revert back to stock, just check the android development forum. there are many posts by rwilco with different versions of stock TouchWiz. You might need to go back a bit to find GB.
the one-click files are about as easy as it gets for flashing.
I started off flashing these stock rooted updates instead of waiting for the OTA updates and haven't had an update notification since.
of course I'm on CM10 JB nights now, but still no notifications...
p.s. backups are not required, just recommended.
Just flashed the disable.ota.update zip. Phone booted up fine.
You can also just accept the update. It won't work and your phone with freeze but after pulling the battery the annoying ota is gone. I think it may come back in about a week.

You need to flash an actual rom. But before you do that backup anything important and then use calkulins format all before you flash whatever rom. If you don't wipe some stuff might be broken or killing your battery. Changing the kernel won't change your rom.
