Just curious, is the display plastic on the G2? I honestly cant tell
I got a screen protector... just in case. I see many phones have decent screens that do not scratch, but I always go with the protection. Also, I have a house full of destructive kids who do not respect daddy's things.
I think everyone is afraid to say things that may sound like a guaranty. We may have to wait until a brave technician tears one down.
plastic screens scratch and dent like crazy. kind of wish they went with glass.
wow, i managed to scratch the gorilla glass screen on my vibrant so i guess i better get some sort of screen protector on this thing asap, sucks they didnt go with glass after putting all the aluminum trim on it
Lol I doubt its plastic

Yea I really don't think its plastic.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I'm pretty sure it's plastic. It's quite hard, but still, I think it's plastic. If it were glass, I don't think they would cut a hole in the edge for the speaker to peek out from. That edge around the speaker is also beveled. Again, something I doubt they would do to a glass screen.
Also, glass is very good for holding an anti-glare coating. The Vibrant's glass screen had one. (Ever notice how glare reflections were colored blue?) That's an extremely thin metallic salt coating on the glass (Magnesium Flouride is a popular coating). As far as I know, it's easy to do on glass, but harder on plastic, and is usually reserved for eye glasses. (And may even be a different technology then.) If it were glass, I think they would have used an anti-glare coating. Then again, HTC could just be shaving off pennies by not using an anti-glare coating. But I sill think it's plastic.
I'm just guessing. I'm no expert.
Thes screens on just about all phones are neither plastic nor glass, it's a combination of materials.
Plastic kinda like lcd tvs. I use to have a plasma an i loved the glass on it but glass cracks plastic takes alot before it does anything.
Either way its a nice screen to me and i bet we wont have the screen cracking problem like the nexus ones. Also always use a screen protector its just smart your always have new screen under the protector if the protector gets scratched just replace it. Better then getting another screen.

Wikipedia should never be used for definitive reference.
All of these screens are "glass", because they are silica based.
Glass. Look up some capacitive TS or mobile phone coverglass spec sheets.
Turn off the screen and look at some glare. You can see wavy inperfections. Glass would have this. It also doesn't feel as hard as glass when I try to scratch it with my fingernail on the edge near the speaker.

My girlfriend has bought a HTC Aria from operator Digi (Malaysia) with 1 year contract.
today is just 5th month and she dropped the phone from her pocket.the screen just cracked as it just so short distance and low force dropping.
We went to claim for warranty as it's not cracked cause of knockedand we were rejected for warranty.
In the warranty statement listed: This limited warranty does not cover physical damage to the surface of the product including **but not limited to cracks or scratches on the LCD screen or camera lens.**
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...
It makes sense to me that the warranty would be void if you drop it, unless you had purchased insurance on the phone that explicitly covers such damage. The warranty is there for product defects, not for consumer damage. Almost all phone manufacturers (same think with computers/TV's) will void your warranty if you break the screen.
You could try repairing the screen yourself.
WOW THIS IS A REALLY LONG LINK TO A NEW LCD SCREEN!

I'm assuming that the OP's screen is fine. It's the digitizer that he is talking about. You'd have to drop it pretty hard to break the screen.
Not really, its Gorrilla Glass, which although is more scratch resistant and less crack prone; is also more brittle. And all it takes is one good drop.
Since when did the Aria have Gorrilla glass? Regardless, the glass you're refering to would be on the digitizer (the thing you touch), not the LCD screen. As drumist said earlier, you'd have to drop it extremely hard to break the underlying LCD glass.

The 2 foot drop that splintered the top right half of my screen on to a soft wood laminate floor says otherwise. The Aria is NOT a Gorilla Glass phone.
I dropped my Aria many times, from different heights and onto different surfaces. This pattern of abuse logically resulted in the screen cracking when my little Aria slipped out of my unzipped jacket pocket onto a hard granite floor in my office elevator lobby. Do I blame HTC for the lack of workmanship? No. They never claimed that their phones are shatterproof.
You guys should do your research. The aria does indeed HAVE gorilla glass. Go look at the Corning website if you don't believe me. They list it under the devices containing gorilla glass.

Could be. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm not completely convinced that their website is correct. It seems weird how much Gorilla Glass was hyped up for some phones (i.e., Galaxy S when it came out) if it was already used on nearly every Android phone, even the very first Android phone (T-Mobile G1).
HTC customer support has even said certain phones do not use Gorilla Glass, including ones listed on Corning's website. Although I don't necessarily believe HTC support either.
I have scratched my digitizer with my finger (not fingernail -- just the pad of my finger that you are supposed to use). I assume something abrasive got on my finger to cause that to happen, although I have no idea what or where it could have come from. The two scratches are right in the path where I normally swipe left or right to switch between home screens. Anyway, it wasn't like I was applying any significant amount of force with my finger so I find it hard to believe this is really Gorilla Glass. Unless somehow I got a microscopic spec of diamond on my finger? Either that or Gorilla Glass is not all it's cracked up to be.
Weird that it's listed on their site, I've always been under the same impression as drumist. They would have advertised it if they actually had it.
My girlfriend's Samsung galaxy s has gorilla glass and physically feels different. I've always been super paranoid about scratching the phone with my fingernails or other. I even keep an entire pocket dedicated to it.
I guess there's only one way to find out for sure though. Take a key and drag it across the digitizer. I nominate unsivil_audio for the experiment.
Look at all the independent tests of gorilla glass on the internet. Probably one of the biggest gimmicks in phones today, and not nearly as durable as the name suggests. I'm not stupid nor gullable, I realize its still glass and is highly prone to cracks. It will not tolerate side impacts, which is why even a small drop can shatter it.

This. Aria's screen felt different from Galaxy S in my opinion too.
But maybe, gorilla glass only refers to the material? There could be additional coating (by other brands such as Samsung) or something like that.
It does not have gorilla glass. And even if it did, gorilla glass still breaks if you drop it on the side. My girlfriend shattered the screen on her Samsung vibrant last week. Just be thankful you can buy replacements for the aria. If you break a vibrant screen you're SOL.
I guess ignorance is bliss.

I dropped my Aria once, it landed on it's bottom left corner, from about 3ft up on concrete. I have had the huge crack in it for several months now.
Physical damage on the unit is not covered under warranty for any brand. Crack LCD/screens is a prime example of abuse/negligence, and it is not covered by the warranty (this hold true with any gadget,TV,notebooks).
Most mobile devices with glass digitizer is tempered glass.
Tempered glass is very strong when force is applied to flat surface. However, if it is hit on the edge or hit with sharp object, it will break rather easily.
Since aria has removable back cover, and when cover is removed glass edges show up, it is very likely to land on glass edge when dropped and break the glass.
This may be a design problem, but not defect.
Does any one had scratches appearing on the screens glass of the Galaxy Nexus?
, few days back i have noticed one noticeable scratch on the screen , strange as i am treating my Nexus very carefully.
My galaxy S which has the gorilla glass never had scratches and it is now more than 6 months old.
Little bit disappointing as it is very new phone with couple of weeks use. who know if there will be more scratches in the future!! Hope not
Just dropped mine 5ft to the pavement landed face first and the battery cover came off. It's still flawless I don't know how but it is.... I was expecting it to be cracked but I'm pretty impressed!

I have mine in my pocket all the time and it's perfectly fine, not even one scratch.
i used my gn with the screen film still on it for over a week until i got my screen protectors in the mail, no glass screen is unscratchable/unbreakable. there are plenty of substances around that will scratch gorilla glass (eg sand) and if even a tiny bit ends up in your pocket, better have a screen protector!
Yea my original G2x had 2 tiny micro scratches on it. Not noticable unless viewing a white background, more commonly when viewing webpages before they fully load.
The LG Updater bricked mine and got an exchange. Haven't had a problem with my new one but just goes to show.

Wise advice here, but nobody sells screen protectors for the nexus where I am. I've ordered some online and I'll be taking it to a professional to get stuck on (every time I do it I leave bubbles; yes I've watched numerous instructional videos alas I cannot do it) - I've only ordered three protectors, hopefully that is more than enough.
All the screen (even Gorilla) would have chance to get scratches...
always get a screen protector for your couple-hundred phone
Yeah I'm gonna have to get some too. I always take extreme care of my phones (whether in my pocket or out) and it already has a small, yet noticeable scratch on the bottom. Definitely need a ZAGG or the like

3 scratches here.
I'm tired of hearing people say even gorilla glass will scratch blah blah blah. Gorilla glass has proven to me to be infinitely more scratch proof than the glass on the Nexus. Like 100 fold over. After a while I was treating my Vibrant like it was bullet proof. Throwing it across the room, dropping it scores of times, putting it into my pocket with keys, etc etc... and to this day - "not one scratch on it", not one! For those who think sand in your pocket would scratch gorilla glass, you better think again. Obviously there will be rare occassions where it would happen but for the most part, it'll survive without any issues.
My nexus on the hand has been babied to death and less than a week into owning it, 3 scratches.
I will never, EVER buy a phone without gorilla glass again.
I've been rocking my Incredible since day one without screen protection and it's still mint. (besides a complete crack in upper right corner (in an area that is beyond the display) from one of the worse drops, which was more of a drunken throw). I really hope that the Nexus can handle my lifestyle, but sounds like this thread is reporting mixed reviews. I refuse to wear a condom so I hope I get one of the good ones...
p.s. I surf alot in the summer and sand all over but still no scratches. I guess it has to hit with the right angle and friction???

One grain of sand or salt + friction (i.e. pocket) and even the Gorilla Glass 2 on the RAZR gets scratched.
You can run a key across the screen all day long, but it only take a granule of something to etch a deep scratch.
If u get a decent screen protector and install it well (I know it ain't easy) it will look/feel as good as the naked glass, and then u dont have to worry - and in a year when u pull it off, the glass will be PERFECT. Small price to pay. The Galaxy Nexus is so thin that with a slim TPU case it's still crazy thin, and you will keep it in perfect condition
I agree Gorilla is scratchable but much harder to get scratched than other glass.
Does anyone have suggestion of good screen protector? And from where to get?

I'm sorry to say, but you should have ordered the SGP Flex instead. The Ultra Oleophobic ones don't extend to the edge of the screen, because they use the dry adhesive method, and if they went right to the edge of the curved screen they would peel.
Frankly, it looks pretty ugly having a band around the edge that's not covered. Plus, because they don't extend to the edges, it's much more noticeable if you get it off centre.
As mentioned in the other thread i have a couple of tiny scratches after 3 weeks of use and never ever putting anything else in my pocket with it. Disappointing.

Sand will scratch sand will scratch sand will scratch sand. What do I mean by that? ALL glass (including Gorilla Glass and its differently arranged superficial crystalline structure) is the same molecule- SiO2 or "silica." Is there variation within silica? - yes, but minutely.
[good read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness Geology and Mineralogy have huge unrealized relevancy in everyday life- just like under-appreciated physics] The variation will not give silica the hardness of say, "topaz" (at 8 on the scale), but rather is usually due to impurities (additional minerals) that weaken it down to ~ 6 or so. Gorilla Glass seems to be a purified silica, maxing out at 7 hardness. Quartz crystals (what we call "sand") also usually sits at 7 (chemical weathering can both purify and contaminate depending upon the situation), and do not have to be just "sand" like beach/desert sand. Sand is a size classification, you also have "silt" which is just smaller (down to microscopic) quartz crystals, and is "aerial saltating" (airborne- carried by the air but not in solution with it). Many other minerals may be present in the "cloud" that hovers about <50' from the earth's surface due to weathering that will scratch just about anything, so "grit" is a huge issue for ANY screen. Gorilla Glass is nicer than other glass types (although according to the Vickers scale Corning uses, not by much), but it is not invincible and items that can/will scratch are much too common to be flippantly dismissed. Also good reads in these comments: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/mfskn/galaxy_nexus_no_gorilla_glass_no_problem/
Buy a screen protector, even if you have Gorilla Glass...
Just get a high end screen protector like xoskins on there. They fill in scratches. Their video shows it pretty well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoMRO4OiXw4
The predominant reasoning for this on the interwebz was because of the 'curve' of the screen. I never did understand if this was the concave curve of the screen from top to bottom or the convex curve of the screen around the edges. (you know...the one that makes dry screen protectors bubble up around the edges if they are not a few mm smaller)
HOWEVER,
This morning, Anandtech released their review of the Nokia Lumia 800. That phone has both macro and micro curves (I've held the N9 with the same glass) and that glass is Corning Gorilla glass!
I understand that Gorilla glass can be scratched with a material hard enough etc.,etc. I just want to point out, it doesn't seem to be a technological limitation that keeps Gorilla Glass from our phones.

It's funny cuz you can't scratch any phone screen ever with keys...
I managed to scratch mine within days of getting it. I'm not sure how, but it's rather frustrating. It would be nice if it remained pristine for at least a few weeks...
My GN has a hair line scratch that can be seen at an angle on a black screen. Its a bit annoying since im OCD but compared to my Epic 4G and the abuse that one went through its kinda sad.
Why? Simple. Because they have to kill too many Gorilla's to make the glass.

I did hear that Corning has a new product out called 'Lotus glass'.....but the primary feature of that product (if I remember right) was large scratch resistant touch screen surfaces like TVs etc. I think there may be some physical limitation that keeps gorilla glass from being used on devices much larger than a laptop. Lotus glass was supposed to solve that.
But you're right, I KNOW the rest of the case is going to scuff. With or without a case. Just give it six months. Unless you go the polymer skins route.
Anyways......It isn't about what you're going to do with the information now. It was just interesting that the main reason cited as behind why Gorilla glass (and search ANY forum for the clamor behind the Gnex not having it) does not appear to be true.

I literally LOL'ed!
A few months back I said the hell with screen protectors on my Droid Incredible. I knew I was getting a new phone soon anyway. The incredible has gorilla glass, and it is now covered with a bunch of tiny little scratches. No glass is scratch proof, it's all in how you treat it. If you have a desk job and you are careful with you phone, you probably won't scratch it up too bad. If you work construction, you may still mess it up with an otter box.
If the nexus had gorilla glass there would still be threads about scratches on the screen. We probably went from a 95% chance that you won't scratch your screen to a 91% chance you won't scratch the screen with this new glass. If you don't buy it, look at most phones with gorilla glass that are not handled carefully and you'll see scratches.

Exactly! It all comes down to the user.
You scratched up an Incredible with Gorilla Glass, and I personally have had various phones w/o Gorilla Glass and I never use cases or screen protectors and they were all in mint condition when I passed them onto someone else.
So moral of the story, focus less on what brand the glass is and more on how you protect your phone.
Yup.. When I took care of my Incredible it was always in perfect shape. Then I stopped giving a crap when the Nexus was announced and I knew I was switching. Gorilla glass or not, scratches showed up.

You know what happened the last time I talked up Gorilla Glass on a Droid RAZR?
The guy I was talking to took the RAZR, banged it as hard as he could on the desk corner, and cracked/powdered the screen. "Not so tough," he said.
Moral of this story is you, the user, can protect your phone far better than any manufacturer.

Everything is about $$.
Nexus has a few extra things that probably push it's cost higher, so they are likely going with an unbranded version, in order to keep the cost down enough.
I'm sure the screen is pretty costly in itself, while the Note is same resolution and tech - it's bigger so probably easier to make.
Well, i have done it!!
I have a nice half inch long scratch in my screen. And its not just a scuff, I mean a scratch you can feel!!
Personally I think the whole gorilla glass is a scheme to make you think you have a better product.
I never put anything remotely rough in my pocket with my phone, never set it on the screen, drop it ...blah blah blah. Some how some way I woke up today and found a scratch!! It was nice while it lasted, but I guess it has officially been "broken" in.
should've had one of these screen protectors:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005P15G8K/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
Even if they came out with some crazy diamond hard screen,I would still use a screen protector.it's just insurance.
Not spell checked nor checked for grammar on my genetic phone
Always use a screen protector and a TPU if you value your phone.
Gorilla glass resists breakage and is thinner than comparable-strength traditional glass. Nothing is scratch-proof.

I used to be one to always use a case and screen protector, but when I had the Evo3d the screen protector ruined the 3d so I kept it off.
I liked the feel of the glass better so I left it off my E4GT, and one day I cleaned the screen and created a inch long scratch. I am assuming there was a piece of dirt on the screen cleaning cloth I always use.
The gorilla glass is to help with broken screens (think how many iphones have broken glass), not scratches. It bothers the crap out of me. I will be an invisashield customer again on my next phone...
Gorilla Glass is Unbreakable,
Unscratchable, Unbreakable. Undeformable, Unsmudgeable and Indestructible!!
Jk about the above :-D
I wrote a post about this topic with links.
Will find it later on.
Gorilla Glass is Resistant to scratches, pits, chips, breaks, etc. under certain conditions, where glass would not be.
Under other conditions, hardly any material which can be used for the screen of a Smartphone screen is Impervious to the above, at this time.
With the above being said, I recently noticed faint, light scratches when viewing my E4GT under certain Sun angles.
I applied a screen protector a short while ago to lessen the risks of deeper scratches, etc.
I think the issues are:
- many believe Gorilla Glass is Impervious to damage.
- advertisement and spec sheets are not as clear as they could be regarding the real world properties of Gorilla Glass.
Oh, Be Careful where there is SAND, aka THE BEACH ;-)
Sand WILL Scratch GG, as that is Etched in Stone lol! Sand has a Hardness of approx. '7' on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
GG, I believe is '6-6.5,' which is slightly Harder than glass. Sand, which are Quartz particles, are a 7 in hardness, hence sand will scratch the crap outta your screen!
Screen Protecters are approx. 3-3.5
in Hardness I believe, but you can easily (subjective) replace them.
Btw, dust in the air contains quartz particles also.
Googling Corning Gorilla Glass will give you a better idea of it's properties.
I found it very informative.

In the past, I've tried the following screen protectors:
1) Boxwave
2) Zagg InvisibleSHIELD
3) Steinheil Crystal Clear
I am currently using #3, and like it the best.
2 to a pack.
I usually screw up the first application with any protector, so having 2 is a plus.
Very transparent. Feel is very smooth.
Finger gliding is Excellent.
Goes on Dry.
Scratch resistance is pretty good. Actually very good. But remember the MOHs Hardness Scale examples I previously listed.
#3 here also, love it, no bubbles at all, great stuff.

Thats what I have on my screen! Stienheil :O!
I've dropped my phone numerous times from a good distance but one day I had it in my back pocket (not the first time) and sat down. When I pulled my phone out it had a cracked screen -__-
I also have some scratches on my device. Gorilla is not diamond. But I still don't use screen protector, after 2 years, maybe I upgrade another phone.
Like the poster on the first page said..the grains of sand will get you if you aren't careful. I got a little scratch on my Nexus that way and I went right out and got a screen protector for my Epic Touch. I definitely prefer the feel of bare screen but a scratch really irritates me

Scratches annoy the crap out of me. I've only had this phone for like two months and I'm on my fifth screen protector. Going to try the steinhall one next. How does that lotus glass compare to gorilla as far as scratch resistance?

Lotus Glass is called Corning Gorilla Glass 2. I believe Lotus Glass was the speculated name given prior to it officially becoming available. I'm unsure, if any, what devices are currently using it.
I've read on the Corning site that is has the same scratch, break resistant, etc. properties, but that it can be made up to 20% thinner, and keep the same strength and properties as the original Gorilla Glass.

i dropped my phone down some tile stairs. it must have had about 15 contacts and almost slid from the second floor to the first floor.... only had bumps on the bezel and slight scratches on the screen. not noticeable when the screen was on... very durable i must say.
Personally I just can't bring myself to use a screen protector or case. Part of the reason I picked this phone was because of it's profile. The idea of hiding it away in a bulky case and noticeable screen protector makes me cringe.
I don't find it too hard to be careful with my phone. I bought my E4GT at release and I've never dropped it or sat on it and there are no scratches on the screen save for one tiny, faint one that I can only see if the screen is off and the light hits it just right.
Granted people with certain lifestyles can't get away with this. My dad is a mechanic and if it weren't in a case he'd destroy his phone inside a week. Luckily I'm practically a hermit with my face buried in textbooks all day long...
PS I forgot, I do keep a TPU case laying around for traveling. I haven't used it yet, but if I were going somewhere potentially hazardous to my phone I would.
