i have dhd with s-off
rom ver is 3.12 with sence 3.0
i want to root my device but DONOT want any custom recovery on my device ..
Why do you want root access without cm recovery?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Well if you already have S-off what do you mean by that you want to root your phone? Isn't is already rooted? Also Clockworkmod recovery is used to have root access so that we can flash Custom ROMs, if you don't want any custom ROM why at the first instant you want to root your device?
i do not want to use cm recovery or any option it offers so why to flash that area ...
just need root access over system for using softwares that require root access ..

If you have S-OFF then you probably should have root. Then you can overite system files!
no root is not there ....
even via adb commands root access is missing
Then how did you get S-OFF?

Did you mean Bootloader or recovery? I rooted with unrevoked but it only did half a job and left me with S-off, no recovery and no superuser access. IF you mean recovery just find a flashable recovery in PC36IMG.zip format and flash that. Then install superuser from the market and install busybox from within Titanium backup.

You flash the PC36IMG.zip trough bootloader
Yes that is what you do to root unrevoked takes s-off so you can flash the custom recovery then though recovery you flash a custom rom that will give you super user

Before I updated my Desire to official Gingerbread 2.3.3, I had used Visionary+ to temp root my phone. It doesn't work with Gingerbread and also looks like the app has come to end of life.
I tried searching the forum and Google, found many solutions but only to perm root.
I don't want to downgrade or change any ROM or do perm root. I'm looking for temp root only, like with Visionary+. I install it in my phone click temp root and done.
If anyone knows about this app, please let me know. I'd appreciate it very much.
Gingerbread closes the exploit visionary+ used for temp root. As far as I am aware, there is no temp root app yet. Can I ask why you don't want perm root?

I only want root, nothing else. No different ROM or loader or other fancy stuff.
I don't think I can say give me perm root like visionary+ temp root but don't change any stuff in my phone. I sincerely hope I'm wrong here.
You can go perm root and still use your stock rom.. You don't have to change that if you don't want to.

Oh! I can. I tried unrevoked but it only talks about custom ROM. Am I misinterpreting something? Please advise.
Unrevoked doesn't work on GB. You have to use revolutionary.
Yes it opens the door for custom Roms, but you don't have to.

The FAQ in unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary says:
Does Revolutionary give me root?
No. You will need to flash this zipfile from recovery.
So this means I don't need revolutionary for rooting?
How to flash that file from recovery?
You need first revolutionary, then recovery then you can flash zip. You need s-off first provided by revolutionary to get root. You can't get it without it

OK. I'll read more and try. Thank you all for the help so far.
I found this guide, http://techspalace.blogspot.com/2011/10/perm-root-htc-desire-gingerbread-233.html and followed it. My phone is rooted now. Thanks guys.
Good job!
I updated my bootloader and unlocked it with HTCDev. Tried to root with HTC Super Tool v3 and v2 but it failed.Than I tried "DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit" it failed too. I don't want to root with root.zip stuff. Is there a root/unroot tool that i can use?
Did Supertool say it had rooted your phone? If so try installing Superuser and Busybox from the Android market. Worked for me.
Did you get any error messages which my help explain what went wrong?

Hi,
I'm new in android world. My device is HTC Wildfire.
It became very slow and I want to install rom. However, the version is 2.2.1
and I found program called " unroot " I think. If I used it, can I install new rom immediately? ?
Unroot is opposite of what you need to do. You need to root your device, install clockworkmod (I belive its in rom manager) but once clockwordmod is installed you need to make a backup of your system. After you backup, download the rom you want for your device and install. To install there is more steps to installing a rom then what I just described, but as you read more of how to root your device you will find out more in detail the steps. Goodluck

oh! I'm sorry. This program is called " unlockroot " not unroot.

Did you read my post above? Once you root your device you still need clockworkmod, once you have that then you can install new rom.
Root
Clockworkmod
Backup
Install new rom
Root is just the first step
There is tutorials here that will explain how to root your device

No there is not a "superuser" app
Where can I download the official 2.3.3? I can't find it
You are S-OFF but doesn't have the Superuser app yet most definitely.
To get root, you have to flash superuser zip found on Revolutionary FAQ page. Read it and it's there. Third FAQ item if my memory serves me correct.
Alternatively you can just flash a custom rom and it will have superuser out of the box.
EDIT: Here read common problems and questions. It's item number 4

Save that zip file on your SD card.
Choose Recovery on the hboot menu.
Depending on what recovery you have, look for something that says flash/install from sd card
select the file and let it do it's work
reboot

Looks like you haven't flashed a custom recovery yet...
Since you're using a desire with german language, I suspect that you speak german ;-)
Before you play around with your device, I think it's better to read and understand what you're doing. Therefore, brutzelstube.de is a great german website specially about rooting and modding the desire. Maybe you should just read the tutorials there and see what your device is capable of. If you need to ask what to do next for every step, you probably won't have much fun with your rooted desire. Especially if you want to flash a custom rom.
As it is a used device, what about the one who owned the device before? Can't you ask him what exactly he did?
You could also just install and run an app that requires root (like Titanium Backup or Rom Manager) and see what happens...

Like stankyou says, you need to flash a custom recovery and you'll need to flash superuser before you try to install any app that requires root access

Well, first of all there was the question if root-access works or not. Looks like the answer was no, but just trying it out does no harm. And since Rom Manager requires root, it should be ok for testing, just like any other root app. I didn't say he would need it.
Or he could just look in app drawer for the superuser app

Sure, but since I saw more than one case where some apps didn't show in app drawer, I don't trust the app drawer anymore ;-)
