My phone got in a bind this afternoon and the screen did not survive. It will power on, but all I can see is a colorful band at the top of the screen. I am wanting to mount the phone so that I can get some pictures and stuff off of it. Is this possible without access to the screen?
I would also like to get my backups off.
cant you just mount it as a usb drive?

Check out [Tool] Android Screencast 0.4 (open-source)
If that tool doesn't work for you, I'm pretty sure you can still do it using an adb pull
example
adb pull /sdcard/download

I will have to give that a try. I assume this dies a full copy of everything on the sd card?
If so,I bet this will work because every time I turn the phone on it alerts me about the last text I received before it wan ruined. It still works just no screen.
On a side note, is there screen replacement for these phones yet?
I just noticed something!
You once connected, you may need to press the power button on the phone, then on the computer clear your lock screen.
Then you should be able to get to your pull down menu and activate the USB connection.
adb pull is easier if you know were the files you want are.
also you can tell it were to put the files you are pulling!
Otherwise it puts it in your current directory.
adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/camera c:\phonephotos
More on adb here Lend a hand, learn to LOGCAT!!
Found this one but I'm sure you can find it cheaper.

Great information. Much appreciated.
On the screen replacement question, what is a used SGS2 going for lately? I am going to look at ebay and craigslist, but I thought you might know off of the top of your head. It might still be worth fixing and reselling.
I did have a full discount through t-mobile on one of my lines, so the one I got to replace the broken one was only $200. I originally purchased the broken one for $100. Nice to have friends that work for certain technology companies.
Any recoup on the price of the two phones is worth it.
If you can get into recovery, I can tell you what keys to press to get into USB Mount for your PC.
There's a program called Android Commander that runs on your computer. If your phone boots, it will allow you to connect to your phone and pull files off it pretty easily.

This assumes USB debugging is enabled on the phone already.
To use Wifi mode, you'll need to install adbwireless.
The above is difficult with a non functioning screen.
USB Debugging is set on the phone. The computer does recognize the phone. I will look into all options when I gt home from work. No time to explore here.
I appreciate all of the replies. Keep the ideas coming.

So, the ADB "pull" command worked. I just pulled my Titanium Backup files and threw them on the new device and restored. It is loading up right now. I will wipe the delvic cache and be good.
Thanks for all the helpful ideas. I was already familiar with ADB so I just went with it.
Do you mind providing step-by-step instructions? This could potentially be very helpful for the community.

I'm don't know the commands off the top of my head, but search around on how to use ADB pull files from the phone...there should be a guide on how to do it. One thing though, if you're not in USB debugging mode, I'm not sure if it will work.
i know for sure the phone isnt rooted, so it probably doesnt have debugging enabled. i'll have the phone tomorrow night, so i could work on all weekend.
bump, i'll have the phone tonight.

Maybe try HTC Sync? I've never used it, but it may default into a mode which allows you to access the phone.
Plug phone into computer and hopefully get lucky with the optical trackball selecting disk drive.

Never tried this...but it might work for you to get into adb while in recovery. Then just read on up how mount and to pull files.

Anyone else uneasy that no matter what if someone finds your phone they can hook up to pc and have access to your internal storage?? Is there no way to change this and have a charge only option under usb?
If someone has your phone plugged into their computer, you either:
1) Are with them
2) Had your phone stolen.
If you have your phone stolen, there's nothing stopping them from battery pulling, going into recovery, and getting all your data from there (granted you're rooted).
Still ide rather not anyone including nosey friends get the pics of my ding dong off my phone with out my permission...
All kidding aside you see my point right
It's very simple, set a passcode and MTP does not show any data until the phone is unlocked.

I typically prefer nekkids of my gf on my phone vs sausage but to each their own
This is why you should likely have the ability to remote-wipe your device (via Software), and why you need to ponder very carefully what data you keep on your phone. The easiest way to avoid your friends finding pictures you'd rather they don't see is not to keep those pictures on your phone in the first place.
There are encryption-based Lockboxes which function on the Galaxy Nexus, and it does actually support Full-Disk encryption (with many bugs and downsides), but in short, you need to assume that anything on your phone is accessible to anybody who cares enough to take it from you. Remember, security never buys you safety against others getting your data, it just gives you time to respond before they can get access.
Wow how foolish of me. I totally didnt realize and i googled this an apparently no.one else did.either thanks

Hahaha its my own sausage i swear.
Seriously though the guy above is correct. Locked my phone, plugged in, and no data shows.until i swipe and enter pin
There are also apps you can download to lock certain apps you don't want opened. (Gallery for instance)
I agree though, the safest and best bet is to set a password on your phone and be done with it!

A setting for my Exchange server for my company that i work for reminds me each time setup my phone that they can remote wipe my phone. As can i From our Web Access portal for email. Just another option.

Mine doesn't work that way.
I have a pattern set on my galaxy nexus. If I connect it to my computer the "internal storage" doesn't show up until I unlock the phone.
However, if you lost your phone, there are numerous ways to get your data. This applies to most phones out there
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
move the pics you don't want people to see into a hidden folder then they wont show up in the gallery
I have "gotya" installed. Not only will send me the gps location of my ohone command but also take a pic of the peraon using the phone when.an incorrect pin is entered. Screw wiping my phone ill just go get it myself
My screen got cracked about a month ago, the phone will pwer on, however I cannot see the screen. I received my replacement from the insurance and I haven't sent my old phone back in yet, because I have pictures of my kid on there and quite frankily I think it is bull**** to send it back with that kind of stuff on there. Anyway Asurion sent a threating letter, saying that I owe 500$ if the phone isn't sent in within 10 days, so this is where you guys come in.
I need help retrieving the data from the phone, so that I can have the pictures of my son or if its not possible, I need to wipe it clean so that they cannot (even if they won't) see my stuff. The screen is broken as i mentioned, but it powers on.
Try android screencast.
Turn it on and drop box will do the rest with auto upload (you have to dl the beta on to your comp)(I'm to lazy to link you)
You just have to some how mount it to the computer

Yea without screen functionality it is kinda hard to figure that part out...Is there anyone out there with ADB exp. maybe if I can get in that way I can just pull my DCIM off of the internal storage, but I need to know how.
There are some detailed threads with a ton of adb commands for mounting and unmounting and doing pretty much everything else through adb.
Just search xda for adb commands and you should find a good thread with a bunch lined out.
I'd suggest using HDMI mirroring. You can move everything to your external SD card (via any file explorer) and do that.
You'll need an MHL adapter, though.
From what I am reading if the phone still works just the screen is dead I don't see why you wouldn't be able to just hook it up to your computer and pull everything off then delete everything.

With a broken touch screen how does he enable USB storage mode?
Seriously, I was looking to get more advice than I did, but after all who really helps around here unless they create it and even then they do not offer support any more
Anyways, I took both devices apart and I used the good screen with the old motherboard, hell I even saw the text messages I missed, I uploaded all the photos to my SD and did a reformat on the USB storage to wipe the photos off the phone, because they stayed for some reason.
Thanks, to the guys that gave suggestions.
ok so i dropped my phone and the screen is completely shattered. it turns on and the 4 buttons on the bottom light up but the screen doesn't. i'm gonna be without a phone for a minute since sprint now wants the $100 deductible upfront versus putting it on your bill and we just don't have the $$ right now. anyways i have a question when i used to hook up my phone to the computer and access the usb it would always have 2 drives: one said SD Card and the other said Phone. some of my stuff for some reason was automatically shows up on the phone drive when its hooked up even though it was stuffed that was always on my sd card. now they don't show up on my sd card so i'm assuming its on the phone drive. is there a way to access this drive again without going through the settings, usb/connect usb way? like i said i can't see anything on my screen...its completely blacked out. thanks in advance
Phone's internal memory is mapped to /sdcard, so click "Phone" to get anything off of there. "Card" is mapped to /sdcard/external_sd (your MicroSD card if inserted). If you're not sure you can always drop into adb and check for the files - this doesn't require the display (assuming you had USB debugging enabled before the drop.)
Hope this helps!

If you were getting Phone/Card then that should mean you were running off of ICS, which also means the USB connection ran in MTP mode instead of USB mass storage. Short of physical damage (beyond the screen) it should recognize and allow you to pull files.
Do you get anything when you plug it in to the USB port?

So I dropped my G3 today. The screen shattered and won't respond to knock code or anything else.
I connected it to the computer via usb. The computer recognizes the phone but won't let me in since I can't unlock it on the device. I have a few pics on it which I'd like to retrieve but what I really need are several things I have composed in the Quick Memo app.
Is there any way to force my way in without being able to unlock the screen? I haven't tried anything in recovery yet because I didn't want to screw my chances further.
I don't want to send it back to BB for replacement before I have exhausted every way to try and get the stuff off but the phone is useless and I need one since I'm on call for the week starting Mon evening.
BTW I can't even shut it down properly since when I try I can't select shut down or shut down and restart from the touch screen. Popping the battery out is the only way.
Thanks very much for any help in advance.

I guess I should have qualified this question with the fact that I'm pretty much a novice. Only experience is rooting an EVO 4G years ago and a Nook color almost as long ago. Have very little recall of the details of Android/phone hacking. Sorry. I haven't even installed ADB on this computer. I can certainly install ADB on this machine if need be or any other tools but have little experience using any of it and it was in the distant past.
The 3G is stock and unrooted if that helps. So obviously it didn't have Super User installed.
I have no idea if debugging is enabled. Would I be able to enable it in recovery? I can't access the OS from the touch interface. Hell, I'm not even sure how to get into recovery on this phone but assume it's via the hardware buttons. Otherwise I'm hosed.
I'll try whatever if you've got the patience to give a virtual noob detailed guidance.
Thanks again

No way into the phone at all just to get the data off?
Any suggestion of things to try to get the screen to respond just long enough to unlock it? I know I'm grasping at dead air here but anything else I can try?
Is there any way to unlock it in the stock recovery?
Thanks. Sorry, I'm just desperate. And yes, I've learned my lesson. Back up, back up BACK UP. 1st to SD then to PC.

Is that what the 3G has, micro USB? Won't the phone need to be unlocked to load the mouse driver before it can see it?
Are there otg cables with 2 inputs or is there some sort of daisy chain connection you are referring to? Sorry if I'm being dense I just wanna buy the correct things the 1st time.
